Class: The Afrocentric Paradigm Written by: Rev. Renaldo McKenzie, PhD Student Professor: Dr. Ama Mazama Date: October 31, 2024 Topic: Presentation on Afrocentrism and Afrocentricity: How does Sara Balakrishnan Approach Afrocentrism and Afrocentricity? How does she differentiate between the two? Recently, there was a discussion in one of the classes at Temple University in the Africology and African American Studies Department about who is “Afrocentric” or not, based on various measures of what is employed by the student in his/her own understanding of the texts concerning the foundations of knowledge and the corruption of cultures which persist. In fact, what seemed to have been unclear among the students was whether there was any difference between “Afrocentrism” and “Afrocentric.” Yet, no one mentioned “Afrocentrism”. Instead, the students, in my estimation, spoke of “Afrocentricity” as the highest political tradition of “Afrocentrism” or African liberation. Some students argued that Dubois was not “Afrocentric,” and Fanon was also because they were not centered on Africa and still relied on European traditions within their strategies. It was as if Dubois and Fanon were not significant because they were not “Afrocentric” enough. Regardless, what they were was part of a tradition we call “Afrocentrism”. Sarah Balakrishnan attempted to delineate between “Afrocentricity” and “Afrocentrism” in her article entitled, “Afrocentrism Revisited,” Africa in the Philosophy of Black Nationalism.” She does not make the mistake of downplaying the contributions of any to our history. However, it discusses the history and development of Africa and its struggle for liberation within the historical context. In a sense, Balakrishnan attempted to reconcile the divide between those who advocated for one kind of liberation and “Africanism” or “Africanity” for another and brought clarity to the debate by suggesting where and when “Africanism” and its rich tradition begins: transcending “Afrocentricity” to considering the rich historical and political traditions and contributions towards African liberation starting with the first evidence of African civilization. Balakrishnan's approach is macroscopic and broad or considers the general and the whole instead of looking at particulars or aspects of “African” reality to make the tradition and experience inclusive. Nevertheless, she makes a comparison between the whole/general that is “Afrocentrism” and the particular that is “Black Nationalism” and “Afrocentricity”. Balakrishnan splits “Afrocentrism” into political traditions or movements such as “Black Nationalism”/Garveyism and “Afrocentricity” or the “Afrocentric” movement, etc. In terms of describing “Afrocentrism” within the tradition or movement of “Black Nationalism”, Balakrishnan uses a Marxist notion of self to conceptualize how, through strategies or systematic means, Africans became dispossessed of self. So, the repossession of self through self-discovery and developing a consciousness of resilience defined the black nationalist movements of the 19th and early 20th century: Pan African Movement, Garveyism, Negritude, the Black Panther, and (Independent) Movements. According to Balakrishnan, In this sense, Afrocentrism belonged to a political tradition known as Black nationalism, having formed one of its earliest variations. Unlike in the European mold, the nation of Black nationalism did not emerge technocratically with the modern state. Rather, on the collective level, Black nationalism has concerned the African's dispossession of the self: an ontological alienation consequent of the continuous subordination of Black life to capital, whether through slavery, colonization, or apartheid. In the pursuit of self-repossession (self-sovereignty), Black nationalism seeks to infuse Blackness with meaning and personhood, with liberty and destiny.

Caree A. Banton's book More Auspicious Shores: Barbadian Migration to Liberia, Blackness, and the Making of an African Republic (Cambridge UP, 2019) chronicles the migration of Afro-Barbadians to Liberia. In 1865, 346 Afro-Barbadians fled a failed post-emancipation Caribbean for the independent black republic of Liberia. They saw Liberia as a means of achieving their post-emancipation goals and promoting a pan-Africanist agenda while simultaneously fulfilling their 'civilizing' and 'Christianizing' duties.  Through a close examination of the Afro-Barbadians, Banton provides a transatlantic approach to understanding the political and sociocultural consequences of their migration and settlement in Africa. Banton reveals how, as former British subjects, Afro-Barbadians navigated an inherent tension between ideas of pan-Africanism and colonial superiority. Upon their arrival in Liberia, an English imperial identity distinguished the Barbadians from African Americans and secured them privileges in the Republic's hierarchy above the other group. By fracturing assumptions of a homogeneous black identity, Banton ultimately demonstrates how Afro-Barbadian settlement in Liberia influenced ideas of blackness in the Atlantic World. Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) UN agency for Palestinians barred from North Gaza aid deliveries The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees says that Israel had definitively barred it from making aid deliveries in northern Gaza, where the threat of famine is highest. The head of the agency Philippe Lazzarini said on X that “despite the tragedy unfolding under our watch, the Israeli Authorities informed the UN that they will no longer approve any UNRWA food convoys to the north.” He called the decision “outrageous,” saying the decision makes it intentional to obstruct lifesaving assistance during a “man-made famine.” *) Israeli war to only end with Jews settling in northern Gaza: Knesset member The head of the Knesset's National Security Committee Zvika Fogel has said “the Israeli war on Gaza will end with Jews settling in northern Gaza,” while speaking to Israeli public broadcaster KAN. He added that “Israel must end the war when Jews settle in the entire northern Gaza Strip.” Fogel called for encouraging the “voluntary migration” of Palestinians from Gaza saying, whoever wants to “voluntarily migrate” will receive a “grant” from him. *) Four suspects remanded in custody over Moscow concert attack Four men accused of involvement in the massacre at a Moscow concert hall that killed 137 people have been remanded in custody, as Russia observed a national day of mourning following the attack claimed by the Daesh terror group. President Vladimir Putin has vowed to punish those behind the “barbaric terrorist attack,” and said the four gunmen had been arrested while trying to flee to Ukraine. Kiev has strongly denied any connection to the attack. All four suspects have been charged with terrorism, according to Moscow's Basmanny district court, and face life imprisonment. *) Senegal anti-establishment candidate leads in presidential poll Senegal's anti-establishment candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye appeared to be closing in on a first-round victory in a presidential poll. Opposition figure Faye had promised voters “a profound change” and a presidential programme of left-wing pan-Africanism. Faye was well ahead of former ruling coalition Prime Minister Amadou Ba, according to preliminary results from individual polling stations published by local media and on social networks. *) Pro-Palestine protesters stage event at New York Metropolitan Art Museum Protesters covered the steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art with a large patchwork blanket displaying messages of solidarity with Palestine to draw attention to Israel's war on Gaza. Many demonstrators gathered on the steps of the museum, also known as The Met as they chanted slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “How many children did Israel kill today?” They also distributed brochures that highlighted the museum's silence over Israel's “genocide” of Palestinians and its support for its war in Gaza, advocating for a world where justice prevails.

Dr. Charles Simmons graces 'Detroit is Different' with Khary Frazier, unveiling a life steeped in honor, community, and a relentless pursuit of truth. Through his odyssey, Simmons found solace and purpose within the embrace of the King Solomon Baptist Church community, a sanctuary that resonated amidst his global sojourns. His worldview expanded exponentially during his tenure in the Air Force, delving into pan-Africanism as he forged connections with Ethiopian comrades and Congolese brethren. These encounters unfurled a profound understanding of America's intricate involvement in the colonization of Black communities worldwide, shaping Simmons' advocacy for justice and equity. His narrative unravels further at Wayne State University Law School, where the legendary Ken Cockrel Sr. became a guiding light, igniting the spark that birthed Uhuru alongside luminaries like General Baker. Through the corridors of education, Simmons' journey intertwined with Dr. Sandra Simmons, a cherished soul whose wisdom and compassion illuminated their path. Their joint tenure at EMU birthed not just knowledge but a beacon of hope—the Hush House—expanding from a humble space to a transformative community bastion, echoing their commitment to upliftment and enlightenment. In Dr. Charles Simmons' saga, we encounter a tapestry woven with resilience, enlightenment, and an unyielding dedication to nurturing communities toward a brighter, more equitable future. Anti-blackness has until recently been a taboo topic within Arab society. This began to change when Nader Kadhem, a prominent Arab and Muslim thinker from Bahrain, published the first in-depth investigation of anti-black racism in the Arab world in 2004. This translation of the new and revised edition of Kadhem's influential text brings the conversation to the English-speaking world. Al-Istifraq or Africanism, a term analogous to Orientalism, refers to the discursive elements of perceiving, imagining, and representing black people as a subject of study in Arabic writings. Kadhem explores the narratives of Africanism in the Arab imaginary from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century to show how racism toward black people is ingrained in the Arab world, offering a comprehensive account of the representations of blackness and black people in Arab cultural narratives - including the Quran, the hadith, and Arabic literature, geography, and history.  Africanism: Blacks in the Medieval Arab Imaginary (McGill-Queen's UP, 2023) examines the pejorative image of black people in Arab cultural discourse through three perspectives: the controversial anthropological concept that culture defines what it means to be human; the biblical narrative of Noah cursing his son Ham's descendants - understood to be darker-skinned - with servitude; and Greco-Roman physiognomy, philosophy, medicine, and geography. Describing the shifting standards of inclusion that have positioned Arab identity in opposition to blackness, Kadhem argues that in the cultural imaginary of the Arab world, black people are widely conflated with the Other. Analyzing canonical Arabic texts through the lens of English, French, and German theory, Africanism traces the history of racism in Arab culture. Africanism digs deep into the cultural constructions of blacks in all aspects of the Arab imaginary, including language, religion, philosophy, literature, geography, and history. Author: Nader Kadhem is a professor emeritus of cultural studies at the University of Bahrain. Kadhim authored many literature and cultural criticism articles and studies published in Bahraini Arabic media. But the portrayal of these developments as mere “coups” hides the depth of popular anger, particularly against the French? What almost no one else is telling is the story of popular movements and organizations in West Africa who are supporting the military transition governments. Where do they come from? Could this spill over into other African countries? Where does pan-Africanism fit in? Where do Russia and China fit in, if at all?To discuss this and more, Rania Khalek was joined by Kambale Musavuli, an activist, writer, and analyst with the Center for Research on the Congo.  This is just the first half of this episode. Another African nation falls to an anti-French colonialism coup, all as the continent of Africa continues to turn away from the woke West at a breathtaking pace! The latest now is the nation of Gabon, a former French colony, located on the western coast of central Africa, they are now officially the latest African nation to be taken over by a military coup that seeks to restore their national sovereignty and kick any remaining French influence out of their country!   Highlights:  ●     “The Gabon Army has overthrown their president Ali Bongo, whose family has ruled Gabon, if you can believe it, for over 50 years! Last Saturday's presidential election was highly contested, with the opposition alleging fraud, and the army obviously agreed, and have officially annulled the results! The president is now purportedly under house arrest.” ●     “The people are greeting the army with open arms appearing to fully support the military junta, and this is largely because of a massive populist movement sweeping the continent known as pan-Africanism, where more and more African leaders are calling for the expulsion of European political and cultural influences left behind from their colonial period, and are seeking instead to cultivate a uniquely African civilizational world.” ●     “What more and more pundits are recognizing is that we are seeing the collapse of what's known as Françafrique happening right before our very eyes! Now, simply put, Françafrique is the system of political and economic engagement that France has instituted with its former African colonies, and it's a relationship where African nations have remained highly dependent on France.” ●     “This is what we're witnessing: the woke West is being rejected, a new civilizationalist Africa is rising!”   Timestamps:  [00:49] The latest African nation to be taken over by a military coup where Macron is being banned [02:55] The latest in Niger coup where the French Ambassador was being besieged [05:44] Anti-colonial populist movement sweeping francophone Africa   Resources:  Reclaim control over your health TODAY with PHD Weight Loss! Highlights:  ●      “This exchange is but the latest in a trend that's absolutely exploding throughout the African continent as we speak, and that's a massive populist movement known as pan-Africanism, where more and more African leaders are calling for the expulsion of European political and cultural influences left behind from their colonial period and are seeking instead to cultivate a uniquely African civilizational world.” ●      “As the Washington Post points out, it's not just Uganda, of the 64 countries that criminalize homosexuality, 32 are in Africa, which the Post article absolutely laments.” ●      “Interestingly, this editorial in the Washington Post recognizes that there is currently a massive post-colonial pan-African backlash against Western globalist elites, and they're going to get nowhere thinking they can dictate to African nations how they're going to live out their political and cultural lives!” ●      “What we're seeing in many parts of the world is starting to happen here at home. We, too, are telling our ruling elite that their days of dictating to us are over and just as African nations are effectively expelling the ruling elite from their politics and culture, our turn to do exactly that from our nation is what's about to happen next.”    Timestamps:   [01:24] How the president of Congo humiliates Macron in a press conference [04:55] On pan-Africanism, a revolution happening in Africa that's pushing back against woke Western elite  [07:20] The latest on African nations banning LGBT Resources: ●      Get Over 66% OFF All of Mike Lindell's Products using code TURLEY: https://www.mypillow.com/turley ●      Learn how to protect your life savings from inflation and an irresponsible government, with Gold and Silver.
