(image source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinocrocuta by Dmitry Bogdanov) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Allen Brooks discuss Dinocrocuta, which is not an awesome dinosaur/crocodile hybrid like the name suggests but is instead some lame hyena thing. Oh wait, it's actually a fricking enormous hyena thing? Eh, it's still not as cool as a dinocroc. From the Late Miocene, this 7-foot hyena thing had a bone-crushing bite and fought off saber-toothed cats like Amphimachairodus, which is pretty cool. It's like Lion King, but prehistoric and with less singing. Not none, but less. Want to further support the show? Sign up to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content at Patreon.com/MatthewDonald. At least Ceratosaurus itself overshadows poor Torvosaurus. When's the last time you heard that name? From the Late Jurassic, this 20-foot theropod had a distinctive horn on its nose, which is kinda cool, although I also have a horn on my nose every day at band practice, so it's not that cool really. I might be playing my horn wrong. Want to further support the show? Sign up to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content at Patreon.com/MatthewDonald. Canceled! You're canceled by the woke police, Heterodontosaurus! Love is love! Just ask Caihong, our rainbow-feathered dinosaur ally. From the Early Jurassic, this 6-foot ornithischian dinosaur lived in South Africa before its later descendants made their way to North America… kind of like another creature that is currently shadow-puppeting our presidency here in the States. I'm mathing! From the Late Cretaceous, this 20-foot chasmosaurine ceratopsid actually really had three horns like most other chasmosaurines, it just had highly pronounced cheekbones that were mistaken for additional horns. A lot of mid, this guy. Maybe he isn't that great. He's mid, this one. From the Mid Jurassic, this 23-foot metriacanthosaurid was very closely related to my boy Sinraptor, the star of Matthew's Megazoic books, so it was actually quite awesome and we will accept no slander of it. (image source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purussaurus#/media/File:Purussaurus_BW.jpg) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Allen Brooks discuss Purussaurus, a dino-sized croc living smack-dab in the middle of the Age of Mammals. From the Miocene epoch, this 40-foot caiman lurked in the rivers of South America, which makes it really tempting to jump in the ocean instead. Oh, whoops, this is also when C. megalodon lived. I guess it was just a bad time all around. From the Early Permian, this 35-foot eugeneodontid sliced through fish and squids with the most hardcore set of pearly whites this side of... well, actual sharks. From the Early Devonian, this 10-foot eurypterid snipped at fish and other invertebrates while remaining safely confined in the realm of storybooks and horror movies and not real life. This didn't exist. It didn't. That's what my therapist told me! From the Early Cretaceous, this 35-foot sauropod was a real pain in the neck to predators...literally! That is, Amargasaurus's neck was literally a pain to predators. It makes sense. Originally recorded: December 2017 In this episode, Matt David has abandoned Matt Donald for the month, so Matt Donald calls in their mutual friend and true science geek Allen Brooks to fill in until next time. They talk about asteroids hitting the Earth, complain about the constant barking of Matt Donald's dogs (yet still love dogs, don't worry), roll their eyes at their fellow co-hosts' pathetic attempts at humor, and explain the concept of hard sci-fi, AKA "realistic" sci-fi. What is it compared to soft sci-fi? How much research should you do? What are some common misconceptions about space and physics you should avoid? Why do the two hosts rant about Star Wars for like five minutes despite that not being hard sci-fi in the slightest? We discuss it all, with such knowledge of the topic it puts Carl Sagan to shame, and talk about 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Martian, Star Trek, and Matt Donald's book MEGAZOIC, which is not hard sci-fi at all, but cheap plug! *ding* Have any feedback or questions for our hosts? Email us at mattd@matthewdonaldcreator.com. Also you can purchase Matt Donald's book "Megazoic" on Amazon by clicking here. If you'd like, of course. Special thanks to Allen Brooks for helping out with this episode.
