Charles Burnett, Academy Award Winning Filmmaker

Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers.  His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts,  was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution.  It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own.  I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. Jeff said that his advisory relationship with Ben has been integral in helping Ben creatively and flexibly acquire businesses over the years.  Being flexible is a key component in business acquisition, Jeff says. He's a big fan of making sure that any acquisition makes good business sense, once the numbers have been analyzed. Not all opportunities make sense, afterall! The SBA will soon be allowing partial business acquisitions (beginning around August of 2023) and that provides more options for the sellers, especially if they want to stay on with the company. This show will leave you inspired to pursue your dreams.  Memorable Moments: 8:45 We specifically curate every portion of a project based on what the community wants and needs. And based on the individual history of that community. We have gone through this process and refine everything in house based on what we see. We do a lot of market research, based on what the residents want. 22:43 Someone once told me, I think it was like in jest, that they thought I think that, if I flapped my arms hard enough that I could fly. And I think, it's one of the things I'm most proud of. I think that every woman should truly believe and everybody in general should really believe in themselves. I highly encourage everyone to really try to internalize that viewpoint because it can only create success.24:38 Don't get discouraged by failure or somebody telling you you can't. Some of the people that I've seen rise the fastest and be the most competent in construction have been women. Because having that different viewpoint in the room is so pivotal, and it makes such a difference. There just are things that women provide to this industry that are different and are incredible. And I would add, always be persistent.
