God has called us to be about the work. He gives us the seeds and sends us to go sow them. Our instincts are to look for the trees that are already grown and rest underneath them. But God calls us out of that rest, to take the seeds from those trees and spread them further out. We may not be ever see the fully grown tree, but that is okay. We are called to sow. We disagree sometimes. We find ourselves divided. But God has called us all to be about the work. So we must remember: we're on the same team. So our call is to get together to do the work - and do it together. 1 Corinthians 3:5-23 fmhouston.com

In the story of the loaves and the fishes, Jesus looks at a tiny amount of food and declares it enough for a multitude. Where others see lack, God sees an abundance. If we believe that with God, there is more than enough, are we willing to have enough faith to be rooted in that promise of abundance? God is inviting us into relationship. Bring what you have and it will be enough. John 6:1-14 fmhouston.com

Rachel Manija Brown's parents moved her to an ashram in India when she was seven years old to worship the guru Meher Baba. Rachel stayed there until she was twelve, but never considered herself a follower of him. She wrote a memoir about the experience, All the Fishes Come Home to Roost. Her mother still lives at the ashram. Rachel has an MA in clinical psychology, worked as a trauma therapist (AMFT), and currently works as a life coach. She also writes professionally under her own name, Lia Silver, and as one of a group of writers who share the pen name, Zoe Chant. Rachel Brown joins Ms. Bernstein to share the traumas of her childhood in India in hopes that it might offer solace and hope to others who relate to her experiences. Together the two Rachels unpack the complex emotional journey of Ms. Brown's formative years and the difficulties that followed, the two therapists then broaden the conversation, comparing their treatment techniques for those suffering from complex post-traumatic stress. Before You Go: Rachel expands on the concept of toxic positivity that Ms. Brown described from her time in the ashram, outlining the common cliches and pointing out its inherent dangers. Emma Buchbinder was raised in the high-control religious group Xenos Christian Fellowship, based in Columbus, Ohio. In 2020, Xenos changed its name to Dwell Community Church following years of negative press, and accusations of abuse and cult activity. Emma entered into leadership roles at Xenos/Dwell at age 16 and simultaneously moved into one of the communal-style housing arrangements called a “ministry house”, in which she remained for 10 years until she left. Emma both experienced and implemented various forms of behavioral, emotional, and spiritual abuse. Since leaving Xenos/Dwell at the end of 2020, Emma has experienced immense difficulty transitioning into the real world for the first time as she learns to navigate the complexities of developing healthy friendships, setting boundaries, listening to her intuition, and valuing rest. She is also still navigating how to interact with loved ones still involved in Xenos/Dwell. Emma hopes that her story will give others the courage to share their own experiences and create awareness that these forms of abuse can and do happen to your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Emma joins Rachel to share the emotional turmoil she experienced throughout her life as a member of Xenos Christian Fellowship, and explains the fear and isolation of leaving behind the family and support systems she had known her whole life. Throughout the conversation, Rachel offers insights from her experience in working with people leaving high control religious organizations providing context for the confusing feelings and difficult decisions Emma reckoned with as she left the controversial and damaging group behind. Before You Go: Rachel points out how high control groups often test the faith of their followers by pushing them to do things that go against their own conscience and explains the feelings of moral superiority that often accompany insular religious groups.
