"It wouldn't make sense to leave the entire burden of upholding objectivity in science on the shoulders of fallible individuals, right?" Prof. Fiona Fidler Today, we return to one of our favourite episodes, with the person who first came up with the idea for our podcast – Professor Fiona Fidler. Fiona is head of our History and Philosophy of Science Program at the University of Melbourne and co-lead of the MetaMelb research initiative. In this episode Fiona first discusses her early move from psychology to HPS when she was struck by the ‘dodgy' statistical methods she found prevalent in many sciences. She has since dedicated her career to studying scientific practice to help improve confidence in scientific claims.Fiona introduces us to the concept of ‘Collective Objectivity'. Following from an earlier podcast on 'Values in Science' by Rachel Brown, Fiona discusses how contemporary understandings of objectivity have become more sophisticated.Rather than viewing objectivity in science as solely the role of individuals, today we understand there are strong social dimensions to ensuring scientific outcomes are not unduly biased. As Fiona discusses, this not only requires diversity in 'who does science' to ensure multiple perspectives are incorporated, but we also need multiple collective review mechanisms to ensure we are developing truly robust, reliable, objective outcomes. Destin and Drew return after a long hiatus to share the album responsible for their absence from the mics of the favored prog rock podcast. In a delightful twist of roles, our typical hosts appear as members of Arcane Atlas to illuminate listeners about the significance of their most rent project, which was ten years in the making - Constellation Plus. Rachel Brown returns as a guest interviewer to prompt personal stories and perspectives about the album which many have described as a unique fusion of Pink Floyd and Rush. This offers listeners the chance to hear from the Destin-Drew duo as creators rather than reviewers as they explain the history, process, and purpose behind music that spans back to their teenage years. From album artwork to studio anecdotes to favorite songs, this episode sheds light on why this particular album has been foundational to the bond between the charismatic Prog Notes personalities. Listen to Arcane Atlas HERE! Learn more about Prog Notes HERE! **Prog Notes is a podcast dedicated to the genre of progressive rock. Each episode Destin and Drew tackle an album and delve into the different musical compositions, lyrics, and concepts that make it prog rock. They maintain that progressive rock is still very much alive and kicking, whether it be highlighting key moments from the early years or tracking the evolution of the genre to today's more modern groups. With each new episode, these two childhood friends encourage more people to investigate this unique, sometimes forgotten genre of music and find an album or band they can enjoy.

On this episode of Ancestral Health Today we welcome Ally Houston. Ally was trained as a physicist but switched to researching ketogenic diets in 2016, and started a paleo and keto food business in 2017, then health coaching in 2021. He and Dr. Rachel Brown started MetPsy in late 2022.He was ill from childhood, struggling with weight, anxiety, seasonal depression, and ADHD. He was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult in 2015 when all symptoms were at their worst. The drugs helped a little but they wore off, and he was disillusioned again. He had started a physics PhD at the time and was underperforming. However, his professor, Ken Strain, noticed that he wasn't performing well. He had healed his MECFS using a ketogenic diet - he went from being told he'd never work again to running 10k in six months on keto. He showed Ally where to read about this and Ally decided to have a go, in March 2016. Within weeks many problems had cleared up. Ally has spent the time since trying to understand all he can about why this worked for him, and so many others. At the time, there was no ecosystem for metabolic mental health. Dr. Georgia Ede was one of the only voices on this in 2016. When Baszucki Group came into the field and stimulated the research in the area in 2022, Ally and Dr. Brown decided it was time to start MetPsy.Next year in Oxford, Ally will be leading a study on ketogenic diet plus MetPsy for ADHD with depression. He'd like to focus on the crowdfunding campaign for this. Baszucki Group will very kindly be matching the first £10,000 in donations. If you are interested in donating and following along, go to bit.ly/adhdketo . Ally also provides mental health coaching at metpsy.com . Ally is also the host of the "Ally Houston Transforms Podcast" We hope you enjoy this episode. Get full access to Ancestral Health Today Substack at ancestralhealth.substack.com/subscribe

A new randomized controlled trial (RCT) at University of Oxford will examine the ketogenic diet for ADHD and depression. Ally Houston, who began treating his ADHD, seasonal depression, and chronic anxiety with ketogenic therapy in 2016, is spearheading the trial. Within weeks of starting the medical keto diet, Ally's life completely transformed. He ultimately reversed his conditions, which inspired him to leave a career in physics to help others with metabolic interventions. He co-founded MetPsy, an app and coaching platform that supports individuals implementing ketogenic therapies for mental illness. Ally is currently conducting a crowdfunding campaign to support the study, and Baszucki Group is matching every donation dollar for dollar. In this interview with Dr. Bret Scher, Ally shares his perspective that rigorous scientific research gives patients evidence that medical keto is a legitimate treatment option, perhaps helping them garner more support from their community when implementing ketogenic therapy. The 16-week study at Oxford will test a ketogenic diet against a control diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables that follows the NHS Eat Well Guide. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr Rachel Brown & Ally Houston. Rachel is a consultant psychiatrist and functional & metabolic practitioner, while Ally is a Metabolic mental health coach trained by PreKure and Dr Georgia Ede. Rachel and Ally both work as a coach in MetPsy, empowering people with mental illness to use proven diet and lifestyle techniques to heal themselves. They offer Coaching programs for your mental health, no matter where you are in the world. Dr Rachel started her Atkins diet when a family friend introduced it. Over the year, Dr Rachel suffered from sugar addiction. This made her stray from a low-carb diet and instead go to more intuitive eating programs. Not just did it not help her with her addiction, but it left the worst experience for her to remember. Eventually, Dr Rachel managed to go back to a low-carb diet, keto, and more animal-based nutrition. Keto helps her restore her relationship with the foods. Ally suffered from food addiction. Even though his mom cooks delicious and nutritious foods, he still eats cereals, causing the root of his food addiction. For some reason, his weight did not become a problem until he was in his late 20s when he realized his poor metabolic health. Because of his addiction, Ally had several autoimmune diseases. He goes through the conventional way of healing, which only worsens his disease. Ultimately, all of his autoimmune diseases were gone when he changed to a keto diet. In this episode, Dr Rachel and Ally shared how mental health problems and gut microbiome are related. They also discuss the three primary reasons for you having a leaky gut. Furthermore, they discuss why you should not just believe in evidence-based medicine. And lastly, Ally and Dr Rachel discuss why it is best to do your research. Tune in as we chat about mental stress, gut microbiome health, evidence-based medicine, and research. [18:49] How Are Mental Health Problems and the Gut Microbiome Connected? - Gastrointestinal microorganisms are involved because they generate neurotransmitters and produce other metabolites that communicate, such as short-chain fatty acids. - Interaction between a wheat, protein and Zonulin component opens up tight junctions, causing leaky gut in everyone, not just celiac disease patients. - LPS can activate immunological resident immune cells in the brain known as microglia. And then, you start a self-perpetuating loop in which immune cells in the brain generate more inflammatory cytokines and free radicals, resulting in oxidative stress and inflammation. - Whatever happens in the gut occurs in the brain and vice versa. [23:51] 3 Lifestyle Behaviors That Cause Leaky Gut! - Diet is the top cause of a leaky gut. - We must be cautious of what we put into our body since it will come into contact with our gut lining and have various effects. - Stress is the second reason you have a leaky gut because it increases intestinal permeability. - Alcohol is the third leading cause. [26:04] How Mental Stress Creates Havoc Inside Your Gut Microbiome - There is brain-to-gut signaling when taking in different sensory perceptions, such as watching or listening to negative news from various sources all the time. - It's possible that stress is triggering our leaky gut. It's also possible that when stressed, we're compelled to eat in ways that aren't good for our gut. - The tight junction system is also found in breastfeeding women, which is why casein is potentially such a massive concern for persons with autoimmune, gut difficulties, or with mental health issues. - Information about the microbiome is still lacking. - Managing gluten, stress, and dairy can help you have a healthy microbiome. [37:11] Do You Only Believe in Evidence-Based Medicine? Here's What You Need to Know - If we take the research literature as a whole, there's publication bias that comes with it. - The vast majority of information on diet evidence is based on associational data that does not establish one thing or the other and is flawed due to confounding factors within the populations studied. - Imagine discovering that the truth of a subject contradicts what your academic parent, someone you care about, disagrees with. This is the most serious conflict of interest in science. - The notion that there is one science, one evidence-based medicine, is equally absurd because practically any subject can be found where someone from Oxford and someone from Harvard are opposed. [44:28] Research and Lab Work: How to Find an Approach That Works For You - It is highly recommended to do your research, not just blindly believe anything somebody might be saying. - Dr Rachel also does her research on triglyceride to HDL ratio. - Ally does a Mcdonald's experiment wherein he only eats a huge amount of food at Mcdonald's for a month. In this episode of SquareCast we're joined by the extraordinary Rachel Brown, the Founder of Over Zero—named in reference to the “zero sum game” that exists in sporting events, but becomes dangerous when it overtakes a society, as it has ours. Over Zero was founded to prevent identity-based violence and other forms of group-targeted harm around the world—and here at home. Rachel is one of the wisest, steadiest voices of our time in guiding us away from dangerous (but human) reactions, and toward calmer times. The program is facilitated by Dr. Theodore R. Johnson, previous UNUM guest and author of the book “When The Stars Begin to Fall.” Find the program online at The Village Square here. Episode 345: Rachel Brown is the Executive Director of Visit Durango. In her role, she leads the team of tourism marketing and sustainability experts at the award-winning Destination Management & Marketing Organization (DMMO) for southwest Colorado's most visited region. Rachel has over ten years of experience in tourism marketing and has held director positions at Visit Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, and Visit Oakland. She has earned a Global Sustainable Tourism Council Certification, sits on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Tourism Office, and is the Chair of the Marketing Committee for the Colorado Tourism Office. Rachel has always had a passion for travel and tourism and has visited over 40 countries on six continents. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Rachel Brown about sustainable tourism and the ways that Visit Durango is supporting sustainability throughout the community. She shares why they created a new organizational structure and moved from being a Destination Marketing Organization to a Destination Marketing and Management Organization. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) need to take action and address sustainability issues Opportunities and challenges faced by DMOs during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the need to shift towards a sustainability stewardship approach and the importance of effective communication Rachel shares the benefits of building partnerships and discusses how they got Durango included in the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop The advantages of having an in-house marketing team for a DMO including agility, adaptability, and cost savings Why they transitioned from a destination marketing organization to a destination marketing and management organization, and their triple bottom line approach (planet, people, profit) in destination management Recognizing the Triple Bottom Line Approach Rachel shares how the shift to sustainable destination management has brought so many benefits to Durango. It has helped alleviate the negative impact of over-tourism, ensured the preservation of natural resources, and enhanced the local community's quality of life. By prioritizing sustainability, Durango has become a more desirable destination for socially and environmentally conscious travelers, attracting visitors who appreciate and support responsible tourism practices. Visit Durango also recognized the need to adopt a triple-bottom-line approach to sustainability, encompassing environmental, social, and economic factors. While DMOs have traditionally focused on the profit aspect, Visit Durango is committed to prioritizing environmental conservation, supporting local communities, and creating a balance between the three aspects. Shifting from Marketing to Stewardship Rachel shares more about why Visit Durango launched the Care for Durango stewardship campaign to embrace sustainable destination management. This initiative aims to educate visitors and residents about responsible tourism practices and encourage them to actively participate in preserving Durango's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Creative Partnerships We also discuss how Visit Durango came to be included in the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop. Although they initially met with resistance, Visit Durango worked tirelessly to join the group of popular destinations, and their inclusion, along with other local hot springs, has resulted in increased collaboration and marketing opportunities for all. The inclusion in the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop showcases the stunning natural landscapes and the healing power of hot springs and highlights Durango as a must-visit destination in Southwest Colorado. Are your mental health pills making you feel bad? In this episode of The Evolving Wellness podcast, I am joined by Dr. Rachel Brown and Dr. Sara Pugh to discuss the impact of mental health medications on the body. We live in a world where these types of medications, such as SSRIs, are over-prescribed, and thus too many people experience negative side effects. Oftentimes, these pills are prescribed before a patient is recommended to fix basic pillars of health, such as diet, sleep, and exercise. We explore a few things one can do to improve their mental health naturally and easily before one resort to prescription drugs. We also chat about the dangers of over-supplementing melatonin. When we ingest too much of it, these supplements don't act as supplements anymore but as contraceptives as they start to repress our bodies' natural ability to create melatonin itself. This can cause a lot of damage to our overall health. Dr. Sara Pugh has a degree in Biochemistry Genetics and a Welcome Trust Ph.D. in Molecular Mechanisms. She studied protein folding, which plays a role in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, antioxidants, and fluorescence. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher on heart muscle cells, cholesterol, and statins. She is published in various peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Rachel Brown works as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist in Scotland. She qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 2003 and has worked in psychiatry since 2004. She has a Master's degree in Medical Laws and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh, in addition to being a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. 7 Day Keto Challenge Recordings with Ben Azadi, Dr Jason Fung, Dr Boz, & Dr Ken Berry: https://www.ketokamp.com/keto-challenge-april-2023 Order Keto Flex: http://www.ketoflexbook.com -------------------------------------------------------- Download your FREE Vegetable Oil Allergy Card here: https://onlineoffer.lpages.co/vegetable-oil-allergy-card-download/ / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S Wild Pastures: $20 OFF per Box for Life + Free Shipping for Life + $15 OFF your 1st Box! https://wildpastures.com/promos/save-20-for-life-lf?oid=6&affid=132&source_id=podcast&sub1=ad BonCharge: Blue light Blocking Glasses, Red Light Therapy, Sauna Blankets & More.
