In 1949, Newfoundland and Labrador officially joined Canada, becoming the country's youngest province—but not without fierce debate and resistance. In this episode, we explore the unique journey of Newfoundland and Labrador to Confederation, including the two heated referendums that divided the province. We'll hear from Mark Manning, lead singer of the Juno-nominated band Rum Ragged, who shares how Newfoundland's rich culture, storytelling traditions, and music capture the spirit of the island's identity before and after Confederation. Mark discusses the band's commemorative song "1949," written by Amelia Curran, which looks back at Newfoundland and Labrador's history. Then, historian Dr. Jeff Webb of Memorial University walks us through Newfoundland's complex road to Confederation, examining the political and economic factors—and the controversies—that still linger today. To read the episode transcripts in French and English, and to learn more about historic Canadian milestones, please visit thewalrus.ca/canadianheritage. There are a lot of different, and sometimes complicated, views around confederation. There's no doubt that Newfoundland and Labrador gained a lot by joining Canada but for many, there were things lost, too. The multi-disciplinary group Opera on the Avalon has spent the last two years looking at Confederation from all angles. It's created a moving project called 75 x 75 which kicked off this weekend. Cheryl Hickman is the general and artistic director.

Ava tells Tom what drew her to adapt a book that seemed unadaptable, how she shot the film in under 40 days without the help of a major studio, and how she got her start in the business of filmmaking. A few years ago, Canada lost one of its greatest songwriters — Newfoundland and Labrador's Ron Hynes. Amelia Curran, a fellow Newfoundland songwriter, is now part of a new compilation record that pays tribute to Ron. Amelia talks about the skill that went into his songs, the significance of his music to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the country at large. Plus, you'll hear her cover of one of his songs, “Dark River.”

Suzie Ungerleider (suzieungerleider.com) is best known as Oh Susanna, a moniker that she chose to take on when she started performing her own songs in the mid-1990s. In the beginning, she was writing and performing songs that were often dark and sad, with murder ballads and difficult tales being a common theme. Her songs and subject matter expanded over the course of 5 albums made with a few different record labels. When it came time for the sixth, she reconnected with old friend Jim Bryson (who's known for being a producer and band member alongside Kathleen Edwards) and began a musical partnership that continues to this day. Together they planned for an album that would eventually be called Namedropper, where Suzie reached out to some talented and pretty famous friends to write original songs specifically for the album. It includes submissions from Ron Sexsmith, Joel Plaskett, Jim Cuddy, and our episode 11 guest, Amelia Curran. Also included was Winnipeg's own Keri Latimer, who is known for her bands Nathan and Leaf Rapids. In the middle of a crowdfunding campaign for the album, Suzie was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to delay the project. Luckily, she overcame her cancer and is healthy and strong today. After re-releasing her first two Oh Susanna albums, as she made and prepared for the release of a new album, again made with Jim Bryson and featuring contributions from Keri Latimer, Bazil Donovan of Blue Rodeo, and others, Suzie made the difficult but right decision to drop the Oh Susanna name. It turns out that the folk song that we all have known all of our lives, was originally written with some very racist lyrics, sung in a fake African American accent, in the “minstrel show” style, which was based on racist characterizations of black people. (You can read those lyrics HERE, but they are offensive) After years of being based in Ontario, Suzie, along with her husband and drummer Cam Giroux, and their son and dog Willow (who got pretty hungry during our interview and made her presence known), moved to Vancouver, where Suzie was raised. Over the course of five albums made with the backing of influential Six Shooter Records label, Amelia Curran's (www.ameliacurran.com) name became one that was known and respected across the country and beyond Canada's borders. She's won just about every music award there is in Canada, including a Juno, SOCAN award, Canadian Folk Music awards, and multiple awards on Canada's East Coast, where she makes her home. In 2014, Amelia spearheaded a project called This Video, which is a star-studded song and video that presents some startling facts about depression and suicide, but ends with hope, optimism, and a call to action. She's made other powerful documentary films since then, and you can find a few of them along with her music and much more information at ameliacurran.com This Video eventually led Amelia to form an organization called It's Mental (itsmental.ca), a grassroots community organization that focuses on the funding and sharing of knowledge on mental health realities and first aid mental health training to help safeguard our communities, families, and friends. Please check out itsmental.ca to find out more about the organization. Rock bassist turned singer-songwriter Ken Tizzard has just released “A Good Dog Is Lost: A Collection Of Ron Hynes Songs”, a loving tribute to the Newfoundland songsmith who sadly passed away in 2015. Born and raised in St Johns, and now based in Campbellford ON, Ken Tizzard had a long career playing bass with Canadian rock bands The Watchmen and Thornley before setting out on a folk music career. Ken Tizzard considered Ron Hynes a friend and a mentor in the development of his own career as a singer-songwriter. The roots of this new project date back to November 2013, when Ron asked Ken to accompany him on bass for a 12-date duo tour of Newfoundland and Labrador. After the loss of his friend, as part of the grieving process, Ken Tizzard created an acclaimed one-man show, Hynesight, that was performed at the Westben Arts Festival Theatre in Campbellford. The new album is a natural progression from those performances, and features eleven Ron Hynes songs with support from Ken Tizzard’s regular bassist Ken Grant, drummer Steve Dagg, multi-instrumentalist Luke Mercier (fiddle, banjo, mandolin), and guitarist Ken Kelly; with cameos from Ron Hynes sideman Paul Kinsman (accordion) with backing vocals from Amelia Curran and Ken’s daughters Caitlyn and Cassidy Tizzard. We caught up with Ken Tizzard at home in Campbellford to chat about the new project. For more information, visit kentizzard.com. Music: Ken Tizzard “A Good Dog Is Lost”, “Judgement” and “St John’s Waltz” from “A Good Dog Is Lost: A Collection Of Ron Hynes Songs” (2018, Self).
Erin Costelo, the Halifax NS based keyboard playing singer-songwriter, composer and producer, is about to release another soulful R&B masterpiece, “Sweet Marie”, the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed “Down Below The Status Quo” — one of our favourite albums of that year. The new album (album number 5), featuring 10 songs recorded in 10 days last winter in a house by the sea in Little Harbour NS, was produced by Erin Costelo and also features Glenn Milchem (Blue Rodeo) on Drums, Anna Ruddick on bass (Randy Bachman, Ben Caplan), Leith Fleming-Smith (Matt Mays, Hawksley Workman) on organ and Erin’s long-time partner, Clive MacNutt on guitars. Leanne Hoffman and Kwento supply backing vocals, and there are also guest appearances by the Blue Engine String Quartet, Andrew MacKelvie on saxophone and flute, and Andrew Jackson on trombone. A ‘making of the album’ documentary directed by Juno-winning songwriter Amelia Curran is due to air on CBC TV this fall. We caught up with Erin Costelo on the road to chat about the new project. For more information and upcoming tour dates across Canada and the US and into Europe, visit http://erincostelo.com. Photo: Mat Dunlap. Music: Erin Costelo “Lights Down Low”, “All In Your Head” and “My Love” from “Sweet Marie” (2018, Venue Records).
This week, conversations with Lava Records CEO and A&R legend Jason Flom and Six Shooter Records Founder and President Shauna de Cartier - two professionals who come from different places but have carved out extremely successful careers in the label game. Six Shooter is one of Canada’s premier indie labels, with such acts as Whitehorse, The Strumbellas, Tanya Tagaq, Amelia Curran, and more. Shauna de Cartier discusses what it took to start a label, how she discovered and signed her first bands, the advantages the major labels have over indies, the economics of streaming, and more. Next, we explore the world of major labels with Jason Flom, the founder and head of Lava Records. He's signed countless major artists, including Matchbox Twenty, Stone Temple Pilots, Jewel, Simple Plan, Katy Perry, Lorde, and many more. Jason addresses the common criticisms of major labels, having an ear for A&R, how the business has changed over the course of his career, and why he’s still excited about new music.
Amelia Curran is a Juno-Award winning songwriter, activist and mental health advocate from St. John's, Newfoundland. Curran's music is distinguished by her intricate and elliptical lyrics, geologic in their resilience and oceanic in their depths. Over the course of a decade, Curran has built a shoreline of song, a place of radical, perpetual collision of matter and form. Even as she leads us to the ever-eroding lip of the abyss, Curran's music helps us make sense of the heart's imperceptible, relentless attrition.
Jon sat down with Amelia Curran before her show in Owen Sound in Nov 2017. They spoke about touring, her latest album, the intersection of politics and art, and gushed over how great Buffy Sainte-Marie is.
Jon shares songs from prairie people, an interview with Amelia Curran, and some new songs from some of our favourite performers. Thanks to the Bleeding Carrot for sponsoring part of the show

Sunday at Riverfest 2015 in Elora Ontario, featuring incredible stories from Sarah Harmer, sharing her experience with Students on Ice; Amelia Curran brings the best east coast vibe I could have hoped for; The River and the Road share their road-warrior story in what I will call the Blue Jay's Snooze; I manage to corner Alec from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and I think, by the end of it, we did a little bit become friends? You be the judge. We also hear from some saucy Texan patrons, a volunteer leader, and a very talented artist from Jenna's Doodles. Enjoy the closing of Riverfest but tune in for Episode 4, also recorded live during the festival weekend and I invite you to guess who is on stage in the background while the New Year's Pumpkin is told and retold... It’s not Christmas yet, but it’ll feel like it this week as we receive many gifts in the form of great upcoming concerts. Lots to celebrate and enjoy on today’s show. We’ll also celebrate last week’s show by Charlie Mars and The Dixie Chicks. The Chicks sometimes don’t get a lot of respect, but they sure do cover some great songs and hang out with some pretty special friends, so a celebration of both today. And on a less joyful note, we would be remiss if we didn’t honour Remembrance Day, so a few songs in honour of the day.

Tons of great new music made its way into my ears recently, so we just had to share much of it. That sent us off in all kinds of directions (as these things often do.) This week's history lesson segment was on the late great Steve Goodman and we heard a few of his best. Last up, a brief prelude to the upcoming homecoming by Luke Doucet and the lovely Amelia Curran. .
