Andrew MacLean (BA'07) writes the weekly Atlantic Canadian newspaper column Backyard History and hosts the podcast and TV show of the same name. He has also written 3 books about the forgotten stories of Atlantic Canada's past. Andrew received a degree in history at UNB and then a master's at Dalhousie University. But before beginning writing, he had already lived a far ranging and eclectic life: he has backpacked through 37 countries on 5 continents, visiting over 200 different cities around the world. He has travelled from Nunavut to the Florida Keys doing aerial surveying using lasers to track rising waters of global climate change.   All that world travelling was brought to a screeching halt by the global pandemic, which brought him back home to New Brunswick. Inspired by recalling the local lore he heard from his grandfather in the tiny village of Tide Head, Andrew began digging deep into obscure moments in Maritimes history as a pandemic passion project. It turned into more than he could ever have imagined.  Hosts Kayla Ossachuk (BA'15) and Andrew Martel (BCS'15) chat with Andrew about stories he's uncovered, and why storytelling and history matter.   Highlights from the episode:    A glimpse into Andrew's travel stories  What he brought back to Atlantic Canada  Why he transitioned to telling stories of history from our own backyard on the East Coast  Why storytelling is important  Why understanding our history is also important    Links and resources:    Backyard History  Thanks to:    Our alumni hosts Kayla Ossachuk (BA'15) and Andrew Martel (BCS'15) Music by alumni artist, Beats of Burden  Our alumni Affinity Partners, TD Insurance and Manulife    To listen to past episodes of UNBeknownst and for more info on the podcast, the hosts and how to subscribe to new episode alerts, visit our website.

When Moses parted the Red Sea, it was considered to be an obviously miracle. The ocean and the tides have always been part of sea faring life and have had legends and myths follow them throughout history. A king's tide is those tides that occur at points throughout the year where they are their highest as the moon, sun, and gravity play a part. The new Canadian film THE KING TIDE popped up on VOD recently to some fairly good reviews. But its title is more a metaphor than part of the interesting plot.Bobby (Clayne Crawford) is the mayor of the only town on an island off the Atlantic Canadian coast. A small dingy appears by the shore with a young baby in it. He and his wife, having just lost a pregnancy, adopt the girl. When she grows up, she begins to show miraculous powers of healing and fortune. Though Bobby tries to hide this from the community, his mother-in-law thinks otherwise leading to great change upon them all.The movie is directed by Christian Sparkes from a script from four writers. Besides Clayne Crawford, other stars include Frances Fisher and Lara Jean Chorostecki. The film was originally did the festival circuit in 2023 before a full release in 2024. With very good reviews, the movie had a short lived window of note. Your co-hosts take a look at it and give their thoughts.

We are delighted to be speaking to Ron Lovett today! Ron is a fascinating entrepreneur! He built a unique security company in Canada and then sold it. He has also written some books, and he has been on various boards and involved in different projects. We are sure you are going to enjoy hearing our intriguing conversation and Ron's inspiring stories today! Ron Lovett's bio: Ron Lovett is an Atlantic Canadian entrepreneur who successfully scaled his Halifax-based guard security company to over 3,000 staff across Canada. Ron's leadership hallmarks of relentless learning, disrupting stale industries, fast action, and transforming staff into passionate stakeholders inspired his first book, Outrageous Empowerment, in 2018.   He sold his security company to the largest provider in the USA at a 24X multiple. He now focuses on his rapidly expanding, multi-family residential portfolio through Vida Living, whose purpose is to revolutionize workforce housing across North America and plans to reach 10,000 units by 2027.   Ron is a globally sought-after professional speaker and thought-leader in organizational culture. He hosts an award-winning podcast and will be releasing his next book and a Master Class called Scaling Culture in Spring 2021.  He also helps clients solve people and culture challenges directly through his other company, Connolly Owens.  Over the years, Ron has been recognized with many awards for the success of Source Security & Investigations and his leadership within the region. Those include:  BDC Young Entrepreneur Award, (x5) Atlantic Business Magazine's Top 50 CEO Award, Junior Chamber International Outstanding Young Person Award, and the Remy Martin Bold Five under 35. People are usually stunned to find out Ron is only 41.  Entrepreneurship Ron feels that entrepreneurship has always been in his blood. As a child, he was always very curious and wanting to make his own way. From a very early age, he was starting micro-small businesses, making decisions, and taking jobs that were more variable compensation.  How Ron Lovett started his company, Source Security & Investigations Inc Ron Lovett has a background in martial arts. When he was nineteen, he got hired to work the door at a few nightclubs in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There, he built a name for himself. Later, while traveling in North Columbia, he read a book about a gangster who made money from renting his gangster friends to nightclub security companies in London. Ron understood the business model, so based on that, he returned to Halifax to start a nightclub security company. He registered the company as Source Security. Starting He started the company with two high school friends on the security team. He had many other friends, and he hired lots of them as the company grew, and the company grew very quickly.  Ron Lovett separates friends and business Ron Lovett made it clear to his friends that when they were at work, they were at work. He was happy to hang out with them over weekends and have beers with them after work, but he made it very clear that their working relationship was not the same as their personal relationship.  The Rolling Stones Ron got asked to do the security at a Rolling Stones concert with an audience of 85,000 people. He agreed to do it, even though he had no idea how he would manage. He needed 380 security people, but he had only about 45 employees at the time. It was a challenge, but he managed to recruit enough people. On the day before the concert, only sixty people turned up in the busses that Ron had hired to get everyone he had hired to the venue. Ron thought it was all over for him. The next day, however, most of the other people he had hired drove themselves to the venue. So they pulled it off! Nobody died that day, and the concert went off well. Becoming the authority After pulling off the Rolling Stones concert, Source Security became the authority. They became known to understand everything about running the security at large concerts, and they had a unique ability to solve any problem in the present moment, which is very hard to do. Give people back their brains  Ron became obsessive about two things when he was at rock bottom and lost a million dollars in 2011. They were to give people their brains back and build systems and processes to allow people to have autonomy, make decisions, and build culture in an industry that lacked culture. Community Ron felt that it was vital to create community for his employees. Ron Lovett's move towards autonomy Ron Lovett was looking for a way to systemize autonomy without using any command and control. Also, to give people their brains back and get them to use them. Rather than having policies in place, he created a framework of three questions. He always asks the people in his company those questions to empower them when they make critical decisions. Those questions are: Is it the right thing for the customer? Is it the right thing for our business based on our purpose of changing the industry? And our values? Are you willing to be accountable? Coaching in real-time and scaling That decision-making process allowed Ron to coach his employees in real-time, in the present moment. It also helped to remove the bureaucracy and allowed him to simplify things as he scaled the business.  Holding people back People get held back from their potential if they do not get coached and celebrated in real-time.  Challenge everything You build a great business by challenging everything. Purpose Find a purpose that will give you goose-bumps. That purpose should, at least, make someone curious.  Ron Lovett's thoughts on leaders Ron Lovett believes that the best leaders today don't solve problems. They ask the right questions and let the organizations answer them. Entrepreneurs As entrepreneurs, you need to ask questions that drive you to be objective about what you have created. How To Ron is writing his second book. It's called Scaling Culture. It is about how to build and sustain a resilient, high-performing organization. He also has a Master Class that can get taken online that will launch with the book. With Gretchen George You might have noticed a drop in your traction on Facebook over the past year, and just so you know, it's most likely not because people have randomly just stopped caring about you. Nope. It's the evil, elusive and ever-changing Facebook algorithm that has made it increasingly challenging to connect organically with your fans. Looks like Zuckerberg wants our money to use his platform after all. And, Because Facebook's micro-targeting ad features allow you to reach your exact target audience, the good news is, Facebook ads can get your message in front of the people who are most likely to want your products or services and not just click like and move on with their scroll. So there is a bit of a silver lining… if you're willing to open your purse strings. Facebook advertising is a pretty effective way to connect with highly targeted audiences, the kind that will click add to cart, on the world's largest social network. And I have to admit, I have seen some early success in my business with Facebook ads. Since I’ve begun using Facebook ads to sell my digital programs, I have seen a 5x ROI on my ad spend, and not only that, I have learned a whole lot about the people who I am trying to reach. Specifically, which audiences are most likely to buy from me, and what language and imagery resonates to name just a few. So, you know when you see an ad in your scroll and you're like, how did they know I wanted that? Well, it's not a coincidence my friend. It is the result of intricate data mining and tracking your activities on the platform. And recently, Apple iOS has rolled out new anti tracking features on their most recent software update that is keeping Facebook advertisers on their toes. It is a lot to keep track of. Pun intended. And that's why today's guest, Gretchen George, is here today to help you make sense of it all. Gretchen simplifies an otherwise pretty technical topic, gives us her recommendations on what you should be doing online for your business, and although important, why Facebook ads are just part of an overall integrated marketing plan. She also reveals how Facebook ads can be used as a highly effective research tool, the benefits of split testing your Facebook ads, how you can get started if you're a complete beginner and the ONE THING you should absolutely do with your Facebook account today, even if all this stuff flies at a high altitude over your head. It's all about taking it in in bite sized pieces. This conversation with Gretchen is sure to get you one giant step closer to using Facebook as the super powerful business tool it can be. You don’t wanna miss this one. So let's dive in. In this episode, Gretchen talks about: Why Facebook advertising is important for your business. 6:23 What small business owners should be doing online considering new algorithms. 7:30How Facebook and Instagram ads fit into a bigger plan (and I can almost guarantee that they do!). 8:53Tips for businesses to get prepared for a Facebook ad spend. 10:25Facebook pixels and what kind of data it can collect. 15:24Information, statistics and effectiveness of retargeting ads. 17:27Resources for step by step instructions to set up Facebook pixels. 18:36How business owners can be strategic about spending advertising dollars. 20:07Appropriate budgets for Facebook ads. 24:26Running a split tests on Facebook as a tool to learn about your audience. 25:42What people fear most about Facebook ads. 27:23What happens when you boost a Facebook post and why it is important. 29:28Common mistakes people make when they’re setting up ads. 30:30Getting started with ads. 32:33Results you can expect to see from your ads. 36:17Exciting examples breakthrough discoveries with Facebook ads. 38:12Helpful resources for people getting ready for Facebook ads. 40:17Making Facebook ads work for YOU. 41:26 Don’t leave marketing behind in your business, don’t put it on the backburner. Make it a priority and come up with a strategy so that when you are ready to go, you can hit the ground running. Set up the pixel. Also, make sure you’re including marketing and your strategy for 2021. Even if you don’t even ever use Facebook, Instagram, ads ever, just set up the pixel so that if you choose to one of these days, that you’re ready to go, you have some data in the pot already cooking, and you have an audience that you can speak to, that you don’t have to cultivate from scratch.Gretchen George Pixels and ROI and split tests oh my! I loved chatting with Gretchen. She makes an otherwise intimidating topic feel a little less scary, and I hope you learned a whole lot from her today. If nothing else, I hope you will walk away from this episode and get your Facebook pixel set up. It truly only takes a short amount of time, and even if you don’t do a thing with it over the next little while, the data generated in the meantime could be very important in the future of that booming little empire of yours. I hope that Gretchen helped to show you that being consistent and believing in yourself enough to make this kind of investment in yourself and in your business is what it takes to be successful, and Facebook ads can get you there if you are practicing what she shared with us today.
