The latest film from director Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th, A Wrinkle in Time) is called “Origin.” It follows writer Isabel Wilkerson as she writes the bestselling book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” published in 2020. Ava tells Tom what drew her to adapt a book that seemed unadaptable, how she shot the film in under 40 days without the help of a major studio, and how she got her start in the business of filmmaking. A few years ago, Canada lost one of its greatest songwriters — Newfoundland and Labrador's Ron Hynes. Amelia Curran, a fellow Newfoundland songwriter, is now part of a new compilation record that pays tribute to Ron. Amelia talks about the skill that went into his songs, the significance of his music to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the country at large. Plus, you'll hear her cover of one of his songs, “Dark River.”

Jake and Ron chat with British Fantasy Awards Finalist Rym Kechacha, author of To Catch a Moon, published by Unsung Stories. She is a writer and teacher living in Norwich, England. Her debut novel, Dark River, was nominated for two British Fantasy Awards. To Catch a Moon is influenced by the surrealist paintings of Remedios Varo. Rym Kechacha spins a wild fantasy from Varo's dreamlike imaginings, a world in which the moon's daughter holds the key to mankind's fate. Populated by witches, sentient animals, and a lion made of leaves, To Catch a Moon is a bold and fearless ode to the power of Remedios Varo's timeless paintings. Today I talked to Karen Odden about her new book Under a Veiled Moon (Crooked Lane Books, 2022). When the Princess Alice pleasure boat collides with a huge iron-hulled cargo ship on the Thames River, it's split in half, and only 130 of the 650 passengers and crew members survive. It's 1878, and clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which has already used violence in hopes of restoring Home Rule. Inspector Michael Corravan, who was born in Ireland, orphaned, and raised in London by an Irish family, knows that the British will never allow Home Rule in Ireland if the IRB is to blame for the disaster. Meanwhile, violence is rising in his old neighborhood, and Colin Doyle, the youngest of his adopted family, has joined one of the violent Irish gangs. He refuses Corravan's offer of help, which puts the entire family in danger. With support from colleagues, his good friends Mr. Gordon Stiles and Mrs. Belinda Gale, Inspector Corravan presses on to uncover the truth. KAREN ODDEN received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University, writing her dissertation on Victorian railway disasters and the origins of PTSD. She has taught at UW-Milwaukee, written essays for numerous books and journals, and edited for the journal Victorian Literature and Culture (Cambridge UP). She freely admits she might be more at home in Victorian London than today, especially when she tries to do anything complicated on her iPhone. All of her mysteries are set in 1870s London. Her first novel, A LADY IN THE SMOKE, about a young woman in a 1874 railway crash, was a USA Today bestseller. In A DANGEROUS DUET, Nell Hallam, an ambitious young pianist stumbles on a notorious crime ring while playing in a Soho music hall. In A TRACE OF DECEIT, Annabel Rowe, a young painter at the Slade School of Art, must delve below the glitter of the art and auction world to uncover the truth about her brother's murder. A member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, Karen was awarded a 2021 Grant from Arizona Commission on the Arts. Under a Veiled Moon is the second novel in her Inspector Corravan series, following Down a Dark River. An avid desert hiker, Karen lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her family and her rescue beagle muse, Rosy. Learn more about your ad choices. Down a Dark River - Inspector Corravan #1 by Karen OddenLondon, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman's corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only Senior Inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles. An Irish former bare-knuckles boxer and dockworker from London's seedy East End, Corravan has good street sense and an inspector's knack for digging up clues. But he's confounded when, a week later, a second woman is found dead in a rowboat, and then a third. The dead women seem to have no connection whatsoever. Meanwhile, Mr. Stiles makes an alarming discovery: the shipping magnate's missing wife, Mrs. Beckford, may not have fled her house because she was insane, as her husband claims, and Mr. Beckford may not be the successful man of business that he appears to be.Slowly, it becomes clear that the river murders and the case of Mrs. Beckford may be linked through some terrible act of injustice in the past—for which someone has vowed a brutal vengeance. Now, with the newspapers once again trumpeting the Yard's failures, Corravan must dredge up the truth—before London devolves into a state of panic and before the killer claims another innocent victim.Karen received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University and subsequently taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her first novel, A Lady in the Smoke, was a USA Today bestseller and A Dangerous Duet and A Trace of Deceit have won awards for historical mystery and historical fiction. Her fourth mystery, Down a Dark River, is available in hardcover, e-book, and audio book. The sequel, Under a Veiled Moon, will be available in November 2022.

In Karen Odden's latest mystery (Down a Dark River, Crooked Lane Books 2021) it's 1878 in London, and Scotland Yard inspector Michael Corravan, a former thief and bare-knuckles boxer, is battling demons, including his urge to drown his troubles in drink. In the wake of a police corruption scandal that threatens to shut down Scotland Yard, Corravan is assigned the case of a young, wealthy woman whose corpse has been set adrift in a small boat on the Thames River. At first, the murder seems to be linked to a stolen heirloom necklace, but then a second dead woman appears and then a third. As the press riles up London and blames Scotland Yard, Corravan's search for clues takes him from insane asylums to jewelry stores and from brothels to wealthy Mayfair homes. Then his lady friend is threatened, and Inspector Corravan must confront the darkness in his own past to understand the killer and prevent yet another murder from taking place. Today's story is an Icelandic folktale, a story about obsession, even stronger than death, Djákninn á Myrká (The Deacon of Dark River). It is a story of Deacon and his girlfriend, Guðrún. When Deacon dies his obsession and longing to stay together forever with Guðrún makes him harm her, but she escapes and saves herself. The important lesson from the story is that one can get out of a situation or relationship when it turns toxic or harms them. The theme is extrapolated to domestic violence situation with Rosalba Diaz, Education & Outreach Coordinator at A Safe Place (domestic violence and human trafficking shelter). We talk about what is domestic violence, types, the cycle of violence, signs, intersectionality, and action steps (for ourselves if we are in DV situation or for others if they need help).
Icelandic ghost stories have been told over the centuries and there is one in particular that I am sharing in this episode. “Deacon of Dark River” or Djákninn á Myrká is a spooky story that involves love, Christmas and the undead. Over the last couple of years, Halloween has become more popular in Iceland, even though there is another holiday (Öskudagur), where kids dress up and sing for candy. However, that holiday happens on Ash Wednesday and not much happens during this time of the year, so it makes sense that Icelanders are gravitating towards celebrating Halloween. Random Fact of the Episode “Trolls in the Knolls: 35 Icelandic Folk & Fairy Tales ” is the book I referenced in the episode. It has some fun stories that are a mix of bizarre, fascinating and a little scary. When it comes to shooting films, they say never work with children or animals - but what about filming an entire feature around the life of one impressive horse? On Friday 28th May, WFT Board Member Fiona Kinsella was in conversation with fellow producer Tracy O'Riordan about her film Dream Horse. Based on a true story, this warm, wonderful feature, which features Toni Colette and Damien Lewis, is released in Irish cinemas on the 7th June. Tracy O'Riordan Bio Tracy set up Moonspun Films in 2008. Most recently she produced filmmaker Clio Barnard's fourth feature Ali & Ava, a love story starring Claire Rushbrook and Adeel Akhtar. In 2018 O'Riordan produced Monsoon, the second feature from Hong Khaou (Lilting), which was shot entirely on location in Vietnam and starred Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians. O'Riordan worked as a drama development executive and story editor before moving into physical production in 2002, when most notably she worked on the multi-award-winning feature The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears. Following this O'Riordan worked as a production executive overseeing a slate of micro-budget feature films as part of Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008, which included the acclaimed Of Time and the City, directed by Terence Davies. In 2010 O'Riordan produced The Arbor, directed by Clio Barnard, which won several national and international awards and was nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut. In 2012 she produced The Selfish Giant, Barnard's second feature, which was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for a BAFTA (Outstanding British Film). In 2016 O'Riordan produced Barnard's third feature Dark River, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (Platform Prize: Honorable Mention) and the London Film Festival in 2017. About Dream Horse The film tells the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small-town bartender Jan Vokes. With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream and compete with the racing elites. Their investment pays off as Dream rises through the ranks and becomes a beacon of hope in their struggling community. This event has been made possible with the support of Screen Skills Ireland. https://wft.ie/

Lydia has been instrumental in bringing artists together and she is comfortable in a variety of live settings, having toured as a string player with some massive acts as well. Come on along and hear this compelling and extraordinarily talented artist talk about her background, musical upbringing, and how the 2020 tornado in Nashville affected her in a very personal way. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lydia Luce over Zoom video! Luce was known as the go-to strings session player in Nashville working with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eminem but is now stepping into her own spotlight. She is completely independent and without the help of a label has amassed MILLIONS of streams (6.1 million in 2020 alone) through Spotify playlist inclusions which has been the launch pad for her new critically acclaimed album Dark River - a distinct take and unique blend of classical, vintage pop and indie rock influences. Luce grew up in a strict musical household where her mother was a professional conductor and did not present learning the violin as a choice. From six years old she excelled in numerous philharmonics but knew her path was not that of a professional classical musician. Dark River’s themes include anxiety and reflecting on the environmental crisis, a reality Luce faced personally after being hit by the Tennessee March tornado that ripped through her home in East Nashville. She also draws on the risky summit hikes and tumultuous relationship that inspired her poignant tales of loneliness, isolation and clarity of mind. We want to hear from you! Lydia Luce, originally from Florida now a session musician based in Nashville, has seen her fair share of different musical environments. From on stage at Bonnaroo with Eminem, to leading her own community orchestra called Lockeland Strings. Each project brings its own set of complications. Gender roles in music and casting for an instrument, racial diversity, and also just talent diversity. Lydia even reminisces the feelings of playing with Rod Stewart where there was a "part to play" to fulfill the casting environment. But for change to happen, Lydia is fully convinced that curiosity and taking time to think about what changes can be made for a better world. Dark River, her latest album, was full of changes for Lydia. Admitting that each song doesn't fit in a genre, there are no apprehensions of fitting her music in a box. Even though there isn't a template, the most common thread for Lydia is that there isn't a box.

In this episode of Insights, you'll be hearing from Nashville-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Lydia Luce. Lydia was known as the go-to strings session player in Nashville working with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eminem but is now stepping into the spotlight with her solo album Dark River. She's a completely independent artist and, without the help of a label, has amassed millions of streams and thousands of fans, which, hopefully you're one of or will be after this. Let's take a listen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Even though Lydia Luce first came to consciousness in folk and Americana circles with her excellent 2018 debut, Azelea, the Nashville-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has been working hard to hone her craft for decades. The up-and-coming artist was immersed in music since infancy. Her professional conductor mother put a violin in her hands at an early age, and she spent much of her childhood playing in a string quartet with her brother. As Luce prepares to release her long-awaited sophomore record, Dark River, on Feb. 26, the lifelong musician talked to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the process of writing and recording the highly-anticipated album. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, Luce also spoke about getting through the pandemic, a tornado hitting her home in March, her extensive and rigorous musical education, early tours with projects that preceded her solo work, and the pride she takes in her Lockeland Strings community arts organization. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and Lydia Luce ("Dark River").

We know we bang on about it here on Soundracking, but it really is hard to get women on the programme, such is the male dominance of the industry. But every now and again, our efforts succeed, in this case with the suprememly talented writer/ director, Clio Barnard. Clio's latest film is Dark River. Starring Ruth Wilson, Mark Stanley, and Sean Bean, it tells the story of a woman who returns home after a 15 year absence in order to claim the tenancy of her father's farm. Boasting a new song by PJ Harvey, Dark River is scored by Harry Escott, who has worked with Clio on all three of her features, starting with her debut Arbor. We should say that this episode features a MAJOR SPOILER relating to her second movie, The Selfish Giant.
Dark River stars Ruth Wilson as Alice, a woman who departed her family ranch in North Yorkshire many years ago. After earning a living as a contracted sheep-shearer, Alice returns home 15 years later upon hearing of the death of her father, Richard (Sean Bean). Her intention is not to mourn, but to claim the family land from her brother Joe (Mark Stanley). Refuting her assertion on the grounds that she abandoned her rights by leaving, Joe and Alice begin a tale of siblings separated by trauma and abuse, while delving into the psychological scars that are left, for everyone involved. Following her acclaimed project, The Sheltered Giant, director Clio Barnard stops by to discuss her latest. Dark River is a dour tale of a family plagued by the sins of their father, containing stellar performances from leads Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley, which are enhanced by Barnard’s atmospheric direction. Each landscape and background emerges as a deeper character in this sorrowful immersion into familial bonds and tragedy. For our exclusive interview, Clio Barnard discusses how Dark River came to be, assembling her top-notch cast of actors, and how her canvas is as much of a character as Alice is. This is one film and interview you won’t want to miss! Dark River releases to theaters June 29, 2018.

The arrival of a new film by Clio Barnard promises an in-depth and uncompromising study of character and place; Dark River, her new film set in the harsh and beautiful Yorkshire farming landscape, is no exception. The northern locale links to her previous films The Arbor and The Self Giant, as does the bleak and brutal tragedy of the human stories. However, this rural tale, based on the Rose Tremain novel Trespass, is somewhat of a departure from the urban working-class focus of those previous films. In this Q&A, presented in association with Cinecity, Clio talks about the film with long-time friend Andrew Kötting, touching on the development of the script from the book, the casting, her minimalist aesthetic, the P.J. Harvey soundtrack and the challenges of the rural locations. We're thrilled to welcome one of Britain's most visionary current directors, Clio Barnard, on to the Curzon Film Podcast to talk about her new film 'Dark River'. After blending documentary and narrative form with 'The Arbor' in 2010, Barnard's 2013 follow up 'The Selfish Giant' found her thrust on to the international stage with acclaim from Cannes. Five years later she returns with 'Dark River', a muddy, muted and hugely powerful film set in rural England starring Ruth Wilson.Produced and edited by Jake CunninghamMusic supplied by incompetech.com Hosted on Acast. This week, we're keeping things simple, streamlined, for our women's liberation music hour. Simple and streamlined, yet elegant and deep. Featuring talented composer Mary Watkins and readings from the classic novel, The Wanderground, by Sally Miller Gearheart, we will take a journey with sound and story guided by these two sisters of the revolution. Here is an introduction to these two women of power: Ms. Watkins is the recipient of several granting foundations such as Meet the Composer, National Endowment for the Arts, Gerbodi Foundation, Zellerbach Family Fund and Calfornia Council for the Arts. She has composed for solo piano for both adults and children, wind ensembles, string quartet, chamber and full symphony orchestra. She has also composed for theater, dance and film, songs for solo vocalists, vocal ensembles and large choruses. In 2015 she was commissioned by Women in Music to write a 22 minute symphonic work for the National Women's Music Festival which was premeired in July, 2016 in Middleton Wisconsin. She has completed three operas, Queen Clara, with Lance Belville as librettist, and her second opera, Dark River, in which she composed both music and libretto, commissioned by and premiered at the Oakland Opera Theater and later premiered on the east coast at Mt. Holyoke College. The production of her latest opera, Emmett Till, created with Clara Coss as librettist, is currently in the planning stages with The Harlem Lyric Opera Theatre Company for the 2018-2019 performance season. Sally Miller Gearhart is an American teacher, feminist, science fiction writer, and political activist. In 1973 she became the first open lesbian to obtain a tenure-track faculty position when she was hired by San Francisco State University, where she helped establish one of the first women and gender study programs in the country. She later became a nationally known gay rights activist. Enjoy these two treasures, combined into one hour! Blessed be. Phoenixx

You might not believe it, largely because we know we don't look a day over 290, but the Empire Podcast turned 300 this week. Yes, we've somehow clocked up 300 episodes of movie news, interviews and nonsense since we started way back in 2012 and to 'celebrate', we took to the stage at Kings Place, London, for a cracking evening. And 400 of you came along as well, which was nice, considering that it was Valentine's Day. How romantic. So, sit back, relax and enjoy as the podteam - Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and Terri White - tackle the week's movie news, review Black Panther, The Shape Of Water, and Lady Bird, and subject themselves to a Paxman-style grilling at the hands of the audience. And if you've had your fill of giggling idiots, don't worry - we were graced by two of our country's finest acting talents, as Ruth Wilson popped along to talk to Terri about Dark River, Luther, The Lone Ranger, sheep shearing, Yorkshire accents and the #TimesUp movement.
