What makes the fae such enduring figures in fantasy? How do you write in the present tense without it feeling awkward? And can a fantasy story work in a confined setting instead of a vast world? In this episode, I'm joined by author Rym Kechacha to talk about her new novel The Apple and the Pearl. We dive into the strange allure of the fae in fantasy fiction, explore the craft of writing in the present tense, and discuss how powerful stories can unfold in smaller, more contained settings.Rym shares insights into her writing process, including the idea of “vibe writing” — letting the tone and atmosphere of a story guide you as you discover the narrative. We also talk about taking inspiration from artwork and paintings, and how visual sources can shape characters, mood and worldbuilding. One of the most interesting aspects of The Apple and the Pearl is its setting. Rather than a sprawling epic landscape, much of the story unfolds within the confined environment of a train. We discuss how limitations like this can actually strengthen tension, character development and narrative focus. If you're a fantasy writer or reader, this conversation offers a fascinating look at craft, inspiration and the creative decisions behind a unique fantasy novel. In this episode, you'll learn:How writing in the present tense can make a story feel immediate and active Why the fae remain one of the most compelling forces in fantasy fiction How to create characters readers genuinely care about The idea behind “vibe writing” and discovering your story as you write How artwork and paintings can inspire story ideas and atmosphere Why confined settings can create powerful fantasy storiesAbout The Apple and the Pearl The Apple and the Pearl blends myth, atmosphere and character-driven storytelling, drawing on fae folklore and rich visual inspiration to create a unique fantasy experience.Whether you're interested in folklore-inspired fantasy, writing craft, or the creative process behind a novel, this episode offers plenty of insight.Subscribe to the podcast for more conversations with fantasy authors, writing advice and behind-the-scenes discussions about storytelling.Get it here > https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/800526/the-apple-and-the-pearl-by-rym-kechacha/About Rym KechachaRym Kechacha is a fantasy author and teacher whose work blends folklore, art, and literary fantasy. It's hard to believe that a band who have dominated the global metal landscape for more than 35 years would be about to embark on their first ever Australian tour. Hard to believe, but also true in the case of England's most disconsolate export, pioneers and kings of doom metal, MY DYING BRIDE.Well known for haunting atmospheres and sorrowful tones whilst balancing uniquely heavy, desolate riffs with melancholic melodies, MY DYING BRIDE redefined musical misery with their earlier albums Turn Loose the Swans (1993), The Angel and the Dark River (1995) and Like Gods of the Sun (1996). A consistent flow of exceptionally sombre albums and EPs have followed, with highlights including The Dreadful Hours (2001), A Map of All Our Failures (2012), and today they continue their endless suffering like no other band of this ilk can.Aussie fans finally get the chance to see My Dying Bride live this month (September) when the band makes the trek Down Under for two select dates in Sydney and Melbourne. To commemorate the occasion, HEAVY sat down for a great chat with guitarist Andrew Craighan."We're about to come to Australia for the first time in our 35-year career or existence or whatever you want to call it," Andrew reiterated, "so we're all really quite excited about that, and some of us are still in shock that it's finally happening. Some of us are still shocked that it's happening at all (laughs)."We ask Andrew what he is expecting from Australian crowds, warning him that we do get a little crazy at times."I'm expecting that actually," he laughed, "and we're hoping that we can just hold it together to get the set done. We'll be happy with whatever takes place. These two shows that we're doing are very up close and personal type club shows. It's not like the festivals that we sometimes play in Europe, where the crowd's massive, and you're 20 feet away from everybody and 40 feet up in the air as well sometimes. So we appreciate it's very much a club show, and we haven't done many of them in the last few years, so for us, it's going to be almost like a blast from the past. We'll be going back in time to when people were really keen and really close at the same time, so it should be interesting."In the full interview, Andrew talks more about the tour and what we can expect, why it has taken this long for My Dying Bride to make it to Australia, what the set list will look like, new vocalist Mikko Kotamaki and why he was selected, how crowds have been responding to him, My Dying Bride moving forward, the early days of the band and where they fit in, if creating music gets easier or harder the more you put out, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The latest film from director Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th, A Wrinkle in Time) is called “Origin.” It follows writer Isabel Wilkerson as she writes the bestselling book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” published in 2020. Ava tells Tom what drew her to adapt a book that seemed unadaptable, how she shot the film in under 40 days without the help of a major studio, and how she got her start in the business of filmmaking. A few years ago, Canada lost one of its greatest songwriters — Newfoundland and Labrador's Ron Hynes. Amelia Curran, a fellow Newfoundland songwriter, is now part of a new compilation record that pays tribute to Ron. Amelia talks about the skill that went into his songs, the significance of his music to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the country at large. Plus, you'll hear her cover of one of his songs, “Dark River.”

Jake and Ron chat with British Fantasy Awards Finalist Rym Kechacha, author of To Catch a Moon, published by Unsung Stories. She is a writer and teacher living in Norwich, England. Her debut novel, Dark River, was nominated for two British Fantasy Awards. To Catch a Moon is influenced by the surrealist paintings of Remedios Varo. Rym Kechacha spins a wild fantasy from Varo's dreamlike imaginings, a world in which the moon's daughter holds the key to mankind's fate. Populated by witches, sentient animals, and a lion made of leaves, To Catch a Moon is a bold and fearless ode to the power of Remedios Varo's timeless paintings. Today I talked to Karen Odden about her new book Under a Veiled Moon (Crooked Lane Books, 2022). When the Princess Alice pleasure boat collides with a huge iron-hulled cargo ship on the Thames River, it's split in half, and only 130 of the 650 passengers and crew members survive. It's 1878, and clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which has already used violence in hopes of restoring Home Rule. Inspector Michael Corravan, who was born in Ireland, orphaned, and raised in London by an Irish family, knows that the British will never allow Home Rule in Ireland if the IRB is to blame for the disaster. Meanwhile, violence is rising in his old neighborhood, and Colin Doyle, the youngest of his adopted family, has joined one of the violent Irish gangs. He refuses Corravan's offer of help, which puts the entire family in danger. With support from colleagues, his good friends Mr. Gordon Stiles and Mrs. Belinda Gale, Inspector Corravan presses on to uncover the truth. KAREN ODDEN received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University, writing her dissertation on Victorian railway disasters and the origins of PTSD. She has taught at UW-Milwaukee, written essays for numerous books and journals, and edited for the journal Victorian Literature and Culture (Cambridge UP). She freely admits she might be more at home in Victorian London than today, especially when she tries to do anything complicated on her iPhone. All of her mysteries are set in 1870s London. Her first novel, A LADY IN THE SMOKE, about a young woman in a 1874 railway crash, was a USA Today bestseller. In A DANGEROUS DUET, Nell Hallam, an ambitious young pianist stumbles on a notorious crime ring while playing in a Soho music hall. In A TRACE OF DECEIT, Annabel Rowe, a young painter at the Slade School of Art, must delve below the glitter of the art and auction world to uncover the truth about her brother's murder. A member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, Karen was awarded a 2021 Grant from Arizona Commission on the Arts. Under a Veiled Moon is the second novel in her Inspector Corravan series, following Down a Dark River. An avid desert hiker, Karen lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her family and her rescue beagle muse, Rosy. Learn more about your ad choices. Down a Dark River - Inspector Corravan #1 by Karen OddenLondon, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman's corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only Senior Inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles. An Irish former bare-knuckles boxer and dockworker from London's seedy East End, Corravan has good street sense and an inspector's knack for digging up clues. But he's confounded when, a week later, a second woman is found dead in a rowboat, and then a third. The dead women seem to have no connection whatsoever. Meanwhile, Mr. Stiles makes an alarming discovery: the shipping magnate's missing wife, Mrs. Beckford, may not have fled her house because she was insane, as her husband claims, and Mr. Beckford may not be the successful man of business that he appears to be.Slowly, it becomes clear that the river murders and the case of Mrs. Beckford may be linked through some terrible act of injustice in the past—for which someone has vowed a brutal vengeance. Now, with the newspapers once again trumpeting the Yard's failures, Corravan must dredge up the truth—before London devolves into a state of panic and before the killer claims another innocent victim.Karen received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University and subsequently taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her first novel, A Lady in the Smoke, was a USA Today bestseller and A Dangerous Duet and A Trace of Deceit have won awards for historical mystery and historical fiction. Her fourth mystery, Down a Dark River, is available in hardcover, e-book, and audio book. The sequel, Under a Veiled Moon, will be available in November 2022.

Today's story is an Icelandic folktale, a story about obsession, even stronger than death, Djákninn á Myrká (The Deacon of Dark River). It is a story of Deacon and his girlfriend, Guðrún. When Deacon dies his obsession and longing to stay together forever with Guðrún makes him harm her, but she escapes and saves herself. The important lesson from the story is that one can get out of a situation or relationship when it turns toxic or harms them. The theme is extrapolated to domestic violence situation with Rosalba Diaz, Education & Outreach Coordinator at A Safe Place (domestic violence and human trafficking shelter). We talk about what is domestic violence, types, the cycle of violence, signs, intersectionality, and action steps (for ourselves if we are in DV situation or for others if they need help).
Icelandic ghost stories have been told over the centuries and there is one in particular that I am sharing in this episode. “Deacon of Dark River” or Djákninn á Myrká is a spooky story that involves love, Christmas and the undead. Over the last couple of years, Halloween has become more popular in Iceland, even though there is another holiday (Öskudagur), where kids dress up and sing for candy. However, that holiday happens on Ash Wednesday and not much happens during this time of the year, so it makes sense that Icelanders are gravitating towards celebrating Halloween. Random Fact of the Episode “Trolls in the Knolls: 35 Icelandic Folk & Fairy Tales ” is the book I referenced in the episode. It has some fun stories that are a mix of bizarre, fascinating and a little scary. When it comes to shooting films, they say never work with children or animals - but what about filming an entire feature around the life of one impressive horse? On Friday 28th May, WFT Board Member Fiona Kinsella was in conversation with fellow producer Tracy O'Riordan about her film Dream Horse. Based on a true story, this warm, wonderful feature, which features Toni Colette and Damien Lewis, is released in Irish cinemas on the 7th June. Tracy O'Riordan Bio Tracy set up Moonspun Films in 2008. Most recently she produced filmmaker Clio Barnard's fourth feature Ali & Ava, a love story starring Claire Rushbrook and Adeel Akhtar. In 2018 O'Riordan produced Monsoon, the second feature from Hong Khaou (Lilting), which was shot entirely on location in Vietnam and starred Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians. O'Riordan worked as a drama development executive and story editor before moving into physical production in 2002, when most notably she worked on the multi-award-winning feature The Queen, directed by Stephen Frears. Following this O'Riordan worked as a production executive overseeing a slate of micro-budget feature films as part of Liverpool: European Capital of Culture 2008, which included the acclaimed Of Time and the City, directed by Terence Davies. In 2010 O'Riordan produced The Arbor, directed by Clio Barnard, which won several national and international awards and was nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut. In 2012 she produced The Selfish Giant, Barnard's second feature, which was selected for the Directors' Fortnight at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for a BAFTA (Outstanding British Film). In 2016 O'Riordan produced Barnard's third feature Dark River, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (Platform Prize: Honorable Mention) and the London Film Festival in 2017. About Dream Horse The film tells the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small-town bartender Jan Vokes. With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream and compete with the racing elites. Their investment pays off as Dream rises through the ranks and becomes a beacon of hope in their struggling community. This event has been made possible with the support of Screen Skills Ireland. https://wft.ie/

We're thrilled to welcome one of Britain's most visionary current directors, Clio Barnard, on to the Curzon Film Podcast to talk about her new film 'Dark River'. After blending documentary and narrative form with 'The Arbor' in 2010, Barnard's 2013 follow up 'The Selfish Giant' found her thrust on to the international stage with acclaim from Cannes. Five years later she returns with 'Dark River', a muddy, muted and hugely powerful film set in rural England starring Ruth Wilson.Produced and edited by Jake CunninghamMusic supplied by incompetech.com Hosted on Acast.
