Meet Angela Code: a Sayisi Dene | Dënesųłıné hunter, hide tanner, land-based educator, filmmaker, and facilitator from Tadoule Lake - a remote northern community in Manitoba. Angela has lived in the Yukon for many years and this is where she operates her business, Dene Cha'niyé - Indigenous Cultural Contracting. Dene Cha'niyé is Dënesųłıné for “our code of ethics” or “our set of morals” or “our culture, our way of being and knowing.” Angela loves her culture and being out on the land, and through her business she creates opportunities for others - especially women - to find that love too. She offers workshops on ethical hunting and harvesting from a Dene perspective and she also instructs hide tanning, tool making, and the processing of wild meat. Colonization has stifled these practices in many communities, and gender politics impact access to land-based skill development for women. Angela is shifting this narrative in critical ways, and in her words "if women feel empowered with knowledge and skills, they will pass it onto their children and we will have a much more robust economy. Our communities will flourish." In this episode, you will also meet Sayisi Dene | Dënesųłıné land guardian and powerhouse Stephanie Thorassie, who is a relative and dear friend of Angela's and is the Executive Director of the Seal River Watershed Initiative, which has a goal to permanently protect the Seal River Watershed from industrial development as an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA). Follow Dene Cha'niyé on Instagram and Facebook Follow the Seal River Watershed Initiative on FacebookVenture Out's theme song is Fires Across the Tundra by Denendeh's Leela Gilday.

This month singer/songwriter Leela Gilda joins Jennifer and Waubgeshig to talk about The Lesser Blessed by Richard Van Camp. Originally published in 1996, the coming-of-age story set in the north became a bestseller and garnered international acclaim. It has since been adapted to a film (released in 2012) and long-listed for Canada Reads. Van Camp has published more than two dozen books since.More on The Lesser Blessed:https://douglas-mcintyre.com/collections/bestsellers/products/9781771621137More on Leela Gilday:If you're from the North, Leela Gilday's music is home. If you've never been, it will take you there. Born and raised in the Northwest Territories, she writes about the people and the land that created her. The power in her voice conveys the depth of her feelings of love and life in a rugged environment and vibrant culture, as if it comes straight from that earth. Leela's family is from Délįne on the shore of Great Bear Lake and her rich vocals dance across the rhythmic beats of traditional Dene drumming as smoothly as a bass line onstage the largest venues in the country. And she has played them all. Leela has toured festivals and concert halls with her four-piece band through every province and territory in Canada. She has played in the United States, Greenland, Australia, New Zealand and several countries in Europe. Her live shows are where she connects with fans who have followed her on a 20-year career and where new fans are born. She reaches into their hearts and feels the energy of every person in front of her as she guides them on a journey through song and experience. She believes music has an inexplicable effect on people. It is a place where she can share light and dark and the most vulnerable moments, with a clarity and genuine purpose that reassures her listeners through every word. She is a storyteller, and through this, reflects the world onto itself. Five years after her last album was released—five years of growth, healing and head-down work—Leela's fifth album “North Star Calling” was released in late 2019 and has since won a 2021 Juno for Indigenous Artist/Group of the Year, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year, and Roots Album of the Year at the Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards. It is more raw, more intimate and more Leela than anything you've heard from her before.

I spoke with Leela Gilday, an Northwest Territory native and songwriter who speaks and sings from the heart and about the people and land that created her.  The power in her voice conveys the depth of her feelings of love and life in a rugged environment and vibrant culture, as if it comes straight from that earth. Leela’s family is from Délįne on the shore of Great Bear Lake and her rich vocals dance across the rhythmic beats of traditional Dene drumming as smoothly as a bass line onstage the largest venues in the country. Five years after her last album was released—five years of growth, healing and head-down work—Leela’s fifth album “North Star Calling” was released fall 2019. It is more raw, more intimate and more Leela than anything you’ve heard from her before. Leela and I speak about her journey with writing an album in Dene language, colonialism, and her values as an artist. Learn more on Dreams Not Memes Podcast. Yellowknife based indigenous singer-songwriter Leela Gilday has just released her fifth album "North Star Calling". Inspired by self empowerment, and as Leela puts it facing your fears, standing your ground, and living with courage, boldness and joy, the album , which was produced by Hill Kourkoutis, also explores two themes that are often found in Leela Gilday's songwriting - a deep connection with the land, and the beauty and draw of the north. It's also an album about healing. According to Leela, true healing is not about just the absence of pain or addictions, although those are significant- it is about celebration, it is complicated, it is about weaving the fabric of the years of your own life into a beautiful blanket to hold you and ground you. It is about letting go of expectation and opening new eyes on the world around you. Leela Gilday joined us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about the new album. For more information and upcoming tour dates, visit http://leelagilday.com. Escuche ES_Entrevue_2-20180824-WIS20 ¡Hola!

Whether it’s on stage, in the studio, or behind the scenes, Winnipeg super bassist MJ Dandeneau is one of the hardest working artists on Canada’s Indigenous music scene. In addition to touring with the likes of Xavier Rudd, The Good Lovelies, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Leela Gilday and Digging Roots, she’s also a successful producer/engineer, booking agent and tour manager. But her path to music was far from conventional.  On this week’s episode of Beyond The Mic, MJ talks about her dashed badminton career, almost becoming an occupational therapist and much, much more.
