Hello to you listening in Labrador City, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Question: What does it mean to be gifted? Some of us come into this world with a natural talent in say, music, sports, or art that isn't shared by most people. Those of us who aspire to that gifted state and work hard to achieve it might still lack that certain something that sets the truly gifted apart. On the other hand, we are gifted. Think about the gifts of education, community, faith, a roof over our heads, coaches and teachers who encouraged us to excel, the opportunity to work hard and be rewarded for our efforts, sheer grit and determination to succeed, integrity, family, and so much more. If we pause to examine our lives I imagine that we will be surprised by all the many ways in which we are gifted.Question: How do you see yourself as gifted? How do your gifts show up in the world? CTA: Don't you dare give up showing up with your gifts because you're too darn smart and important to stop now.Be well, do good work, and keep in touch! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! In 1949, Newfoundland and Labrador officially joined Canada, becoming the country's youngest province—but not without fierce debate and resistance. In this episode, we explore the unique journey of Newfoundland and Labrador to Confederation, including the two heated referendums that divided the province. We'll hear from Mark Manning, lead singer of the Juno-nominated band Rum Ragged, who shares how Newfoundland's rich culture, storytelling traditions, and music capture the spirit of the island's identity before and after Confederation. Mark discusses the band's commemorative song "1949," written by Amelia Curran, which looks back at Newfoundland and Labrador's history. Then, historian Dr. Jeff Webb of Memorial University walks us through Newfoundland's complex road to Confederation, examining the political and economic factors—and the controversies—that still linger today. To read the episode transcripts in French and English, and to learn more about historic Canadian milestones, please visit thewalrus.ca/canadianheritage. Despite growing concerns about Canada's economy, including a meager increase in GDP and dwindling consumer confidence, the Bank of Canada (BOC) has yet to implement a rate cut. The lack-luster GDP rise of 0.2% in February fell short of the projected 0.4%, with early data for March indicating stagnation. As a result, Q1 GDP growth is expected to reach only 0.6%, marking the sixth consecutive quarterly decline and a 2% annual contraction in per capita GDP.Despite these troubling indicators, the real estate market in Canada is surprisingly resilient. The Real Estate Outlook Index is at its highest level since rate hikes began two years ago, with record-high prices recorded in provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec (particularly in Montreal), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland/Labrador. This buoyancy is fuelled in part by low per capita home sales in recent years, which are expected to rebound even amidst economic softening. Additionally, a significant portion of potential buyers are waiting for a rate cut before making a move, further propping up sentiment. However, ominous signs persist. Insolvencies in key sectors such as construction, finance/real estate, retail, and accommodation/food services are at their highest levels in a decade. Despite this, market odds of a rate cut in June have fallen to just 35%, down from 80% eight weeks earlier.Mortgage delinquency rates remain relatively low, particularly in Ontario and British Columbia, signaling stability in the residential real estate sector. Yet, this stability could deter the BOC from implementing rate cuts, despite mounting economic challenges. In the U.S., while inflation has shown signs of easing, concerns over consumer spending habits persist. With previous government stimulus savings (over 2.1 trillion dollars) are now exhausted and retailers reporting reduced consumer spending, fears of rising insolvencies and delinquencies loom large.Historical analysis suggests that a rate cut may be overdue, with previous cycles seeing cuts around the 27-month mark. However, there are many policies and decisions that are still contributing to elevated levels of inflation. Trudeau's ambitious plan to increase housing construction faces big obstacles, as housing starts decline despite high demand and the promises that have been made to build 3.9 million homes by 2030.While the market may see opportunities for buyers amid increasing inventory, the average home price in the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) has reached a new all-time high, despite sustained higher interest rates. This is the case in many different provinces and cities throughout Canada. Overall, while there are indications of economic challenges ahead, slowing GDP, including rising insolvencies and declining consumer spending, factors such as stable real estate markets and historical rate cycle comparisons make the timing of a rate cut more uncertain than they've ever been. _________________________________ Contact Us To Book Your Private Consultation:

Vortex Energy CEO Paul Sparks joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share news the company has initiated a diamond core drilling program at its Robinsons River Salt Project in Newfoundland & Labrador. The company has secured all necessary permits to conduct drilling at two core wells within the project. The company has reported hitting Salt in the west structure and the core in in the lab for further analysis. These two core wells are situated at the East and West salt structures of the project, which were identified during a hydrogen storage capacity assessment. The primary objectives of the drilling program are to confirm the depth of the salt structures and gather geological data on both the salt and non-salt rock formations present at the Robinsons River Salt Project. Based on available geological information, the East Salt Structure is believed to have the potential to store approximately 550,000 tonnes of hydrogen across more than 35 caverns. The West Salt Structure is estimated to have the potential to store around 250,000 tonnes of hydrogen within more than 25 caverns. Vortex Energy's drilling program is a significant step toward assessing the project's hydrogen storage capacity and advancing its potential as a hydrogen storage facility. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to exploring sustainable energy solutions. #proactiveinvestors #vortexenergycopr #cse #vrtx #otc #vtecf #hydrogen #newfoundland #mining #drilling #HydrogenStorage #SaltExploration #EnergySolutions #RenewableEnergy #RobinsonRiverProject #GreenTechnology #HydrogenProjects #ExplorationNews #SustainableFuture #CleanEnergy #RoadSaltDemand #EnergyInnovation #DrillProgram #EnvironmentalImpact #EnergyTransition #HydrogenEconomy #CanadaEnergy #LabradorExploration #EcoFriendlyTech #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #FutureOfEnergy #CorporateLeadership #EnergyStorageSolutions #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
The Liberals have held sway in Newfoundland and Labrador ever since the federal and provincial parties won the elections of 2015. But that could be changing. The latest polls suggest Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives might turn the province blue, and while Premier Andrew Furey's Liberals are still narrowly ahead in provincial voting intentions, they now face a new challenger as the opposition PCs have a new leader.Joining me this week to chat about the political scene in Newfoundland and Labrador is Tim Powers, chairperson at Summa Strategies, and Mike Connors, co-anchor of the NTV Evening Newshour and former legislative reporter in St. John's.In addition to listening to this episode of The Writ Podcast in your inbox, at TheWrit.ca or on podcast apps like Apple Podcasts, you can also watch this episode on YouTube. If you're looking for this week's extra episode of The Numbers podcast, it is available for Patreon members here. I won't take no for an answer, in the most you know positive and you know like dedicated way, but I think that, that is very important. I feel like that has given me that hunger and like that desire of figuring it out has led me to where I am today. If I had been discouraged by the rejection of Caminos in 2019 I wouldn't be here. I am very proud and very happy and I always say if Santiago did it, you can do it too. - Santiago Guzmán Meet Santiago Guzmán, a writer, performer, director and producer for theatre and film originally from Metepec, Mexico, now based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He is the Artistic Director of TODOS Productions and his work is very brown, very queer, and very real. Santiago is the creator and performer of “Altar” that was part of this year's Rutas Festival. Altar tells the story of Eugenio a queer young immigrant living in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. Less than a year has passed since his move from Mexico, but in that time, he experienced deep love and deeper heartbreak when his new boyfriend, Benjamin, inexplicably “ghosted” him. No, Benjamin isn't dead; he just stopped calling and texting. And the thing is…Eugenio's still not over it. Looking to the traditional Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (The Day of The Dead) and his father's previous experience with paranormal activities, Eugenio decides to build an altar (a central part of the Día de Muertos ritual) in the hopes that he will be able to summon his boyfriend's ‘ghost' to sort out the end of their relationship once and for all. Through the altar, Eugenio realizes that he has been something of a ghost himself to the loved ones he left behind in Mexico. Will setting up an altar be enough for Eugenio to forgive, forget, and love again? Or enough to help him heal the relationships with his friends and family far away? Peckford was born in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, on August 27, 1942, and grew up in Whitbourne, Marystown, and Lewisporte. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree, having also completed postgraduate work in English Literature, Education, Psychology, and French Literature. Prior to entering politics, he was a high school teacher in rural Newfoundland. He was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1972 at the age of twenty-nine and was appointed parliamentary assistant to the premier, Honourable Frank Moores, in 1973. The following year he was appointed minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and in 1976 held the portfolios of minister of: Mines and Energy; and Rural and Northern Development. At the age of thirty-six, he was elected leader of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party and premier of the Province, becoming the youngest first minister in over 100 years. It was Pickford's administration that fought for and achieved a new, ground-breaking arrangement with the federal government called the Atlantic Accord, which has become the template for all exploration and development of offshore oil and gas resources in Canada. It is under this arrangement that the oil fields of Hibernia, Terra Nova, and White Rose have been developed and are producing today. It is as a result of the revenues from these developments that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has achieved “have” status, the first time since becoming a part of Canada in 1949. Peckford retired from public life in 1989 and established his own consulting business serving government and business clients in North America and Europe. In 1982, Peckford received the Vanier Award as an outstanding young Canadian. That same year he was sworn to the Privy Council of Canada by her majesty the Queen, and he published a book in 1983 entitled The Past in the Present expressing his views on Newfoundland a...
Since the time of Cleisthenes and Pericles freedom has been the aspirational force behind the formation of democracies around the world. However, as history has shown the path to securing individual freedoms often comes at a high cost. Public health restrictions and mandates during the pandemic have challenged our constitutional rights in ways not seen since times of war. As we enter year 3 of the war on Covid with a new variant and record case counts the tension between individual rights and the social contract is becoming impossible to ignore. In this episode of Awake In Relationship I speak with Hon. Brian Peckford, former Premier of Newfoundland Labrador (1979 - 1989) and last living architect of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, about the history of the Charter and its significance in the era of Covid.Follow Awake In Relationship on Instagram and TwitterIf you have been loving what you are hearing on AIR please rate, review and subscribe to get the latest content fresh to your device. We're covering two elections this week- one is very much our bread and butter and the other one is a bit of a departure. Firstly, we're taking a look at the Newfoundland and Labrador general election, which took place on 25th March and was Canada's first postal-only election. Then there's the unionisation ballot that took place in the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, a city in the US state of Alabama. This was a vote which has a huge amount of significance for the US and indeed many other countries, even if it's being held in a single workplace, given the global significance of Amazon.
