Many of us dream of living a luxurious life, and we tend to confine that idea to materialistic luxury, houses and cars and clothing and jewelry and travel, all the things money can buy. And yet there is another type of luxury I want to talk about with you today, and it's the luxury of living in alignment with our God-given possibility, the luxury of living a life that creates more energy than it expends, a life of feeling amazing in the love we have for ourselves, for others, and for God. This is luxury that feels like a pearl of great price, something we are willing to sacrifice our tolerable life for. Many of us think that if we could just take a confidence pill that everything in our life would be different, because confidence impacts our courage to step into new and sometimes scary situations and to take risks that could make our lives better. And yet, we all have confidence. Sometimes that confidence is just in things, but what we mostly struggle with is confidence in our SELVES. The confidence to believe that regardless of the outcome we will figure it out and have our own backs and still love and appreciate ourselves. When we can learn to have confidence in us, then our lives become more of what we want them to be. All of us have people who don't like us, even if we are the most kind and Christlike person we know.  It's just part of our human experience. When we can learn to accept other people's agency to not like us, we can let go of self-defeating behaviors like people-pleasing, perfectionist tendencies, trying to buy their love with time, money, energy, or resources, or beating ourselves up for ‘not being enough.' The stronger our sense of self, the more we don't need other people liking us, or validating us, to feel valuable and of worth. It really is okay if other people don't like you. Relationships can be hard. If we have created a pprotective pattern over the years, we may find that we are in a pattern of leaning out emotionally in our marriage and not having the intimate connection that we inwardly crave. When we choose to be all-in, we take a risk in our relationship, but it is also the only way to open a door that makes emotional intimacy an option. There aren't any guarantees how your spouse will show up when you choose to lean in, but I promise, you will be a better person on the other side of you couraging up and being all in regardless of the outcome. God created us to be sexual beings. Through a lot of social conditioning in the 70s and 80s (and probably before, but I wasn't there), we got a lot of mixed messages about our sexuality as women, and one of them was not that as women we were created to be sexual and find a lot of pleasure and enjoyment there. From this conditioning, many of us struggle to be at peace with our sexuality and to engage in healthy and happy sexuality. When we have a strong sense of self, we are more fully capable of addressing these challenging conditioned thoughts and moving into a more whole version of ourselves that includes healthy sexuality.   Thanks for listening!  Want to learn more about this concept?  Check out these podcasts: 29 Validation 34 Self-Compassion 46 Choosing to Love Yourself 78 Playing Small 104 Cultivating Self-Love 105 Self-Love In Our Past, Present, and Future 106 Fierce Self-Love 113 Self-Acceptance 114 Confidence 137 Not Enough? How does our sense of self impact our spirituality, or our ability to connect with God? Significantly. When we have a strong sense of self we see ourselves as worthy of God's love, deserving of His mercy, and accepting of His grace.  When we have a struggling sense of self we don't beieve that God could love us and forgive us for our human frailties. Though God is always there with love and an outstretched hand, our feelings of worth and confidence will determine whether we are willing and able to reach out and accept what He is offering us. Our connection to God, our spirituality, is determined not by what God is offering, but by what we are willing to accept. Having a strong sense of self is so valuable in our parenting journey.  It allows for us to have healthy, strong, and beautiful relationships with our children, where a struggling sense of self breaks down our relationships and actually creates more struggle with our sense of self.  The work we do to develop our sense of self will allow us to have better boundaries with our adult children and also stop people-pleasing in an effort to earn their love and acceptance.  This strong sense of self empowers us to honor their agency and not feel threatened or insecure when they choose paths that we weren't anticipating.  We just can't go wrong with a healthy sense of self. This week we are continuing with our discussions about sense of self, and focusing on how it impacts our marriages.  It is really difficult, if not impossible, to have a strong, healthy, intimately connected marriage relationship if we don't have a strong sense of self.  When we have an underdeveloped sense of self, we lessen our capacity to really love and accept the other person and we severly limit our ability to do the repair work that is inevitable and so important to our marriage, two things that are vital for deep, intimate connection.  Let's dig a little deeper so we can clean some things up, shall we? Continuing on with our sense of self series, today we are applying it to dating. When we have a strong sense of self, we approach dating with courage, confidence, and conviction. We aren't afraid of saying 'no' or being rejected. That's not to say we love it when it happens, but it doesn't rock our world because we understand that people's preferences don't mean anything about us. A strong sense of self approaches dating from an abundance mindset, while a reflective sense of self approaches it from a scarcity mindset.  And a scarcity mindset will set us up for a struggling relationship, while an abundance mindset will more naturally steer clear of people who won't be a good fit, and we won't be willing to 'settle'.  A strong sense of self is the key to having a fun and successful dating in mid-life experience. Caleb Kunle - All In Your Head a 2022 single on Pony Recordings. While Caleb Kunle may only have a handful of EPs and singles under his belt, the soul-pop artist has been making a splash in the UK since the release of his debut EP Eden in 2017 which landed him the prize of Emerging Artist of the Year 2017 from Thatchers Haze x NME. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Kunle immigrated to the Irish countryside of Laios at eight years old where his love of music was fostered through church choir and playing guitar. Inspired by Nina Simone and Sam Cooke, Kunle's music has a sound that's simultaneously retro and refreshingly modern. Our Song of the Day, “All In Your Head,” opens with stirring strings before Kunle bursts in with an impassioned “Oh!” From there, a bellowing horn section, jazzy piano, and uptempo drums accompany Kunle's croons to pop perfection. Kunle had this to say about the song: “All in your head is an anthem about us facing and rising to our inner challenges. Referenced in the middle 8 lyric ‘It's in your head now, you're on the frontline' this highlights how we collectively have our internal battles and that we can overcome them!” “All In Your Head” is accompanied by a joyful and appropriately retro video directed by Andy Banjanin. Web 3.0 is a hot topic right now. What is it? And why is there so much skepticism and hype surrounding it? Serial entrepreneur and Web3 expert Sam Kamani joins host Jim Barnish on this episode to discuss why this is an opportunity for building in a new environment. Whether or not you're familiar with blockchain technology, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies, you need to pay attention.3 Key TakeawaysProblems are opportunities. Don't complain about them - go to work, fix them, and profit.Recessions are a great time for building and experimenting, thanks to lower operating  costs and the necessity for innovation to survive (and thrive)! To grasp Web3, you need to understand the evolution:Web1 = Information consumption disruption e.g., Blogs, websites, etc.Web2 = Information/content creation disruption e.g., Social mediaWeb3 = Ownership revolution i.e., data & currency ownership decentralizationResourcesSam's LinkedInSam's TwitterSam's websiteIt's All In Your Head by RussWeb3 with Sam Kamani podcastNaval Ravikant on the Tim Ferriss ShowBalaji Srinivasan on the Tim Ferriss ShowAbout Sam Kamani is head of growth at Cookbook, cofounder of Ensydr, host of the Web3 with Sam Kamani podcast, and author of “The 30 Day Startup” and “Business In the Time of Corona.”Prior to working in blockchain, Sam has 15+ years experience building and growing startups with 2 exits under his belt. Sam currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand with his wife and 3 sons. On this episode I am joined by Dr. Joseph D Pianka. He is a Physician/Gastroenterologist and author of It's All In Your Head. He has been a board-certified practicing gastroenterologist in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for over twenty years. A devout husband and father of three, he is also an avid surfer, snowboarder, fly-fisherman, and outdoor enthusiast. Combining his expertise pertaining to fitness and nutrition, his unique perspectives regarding psychology, faith, and self-motivation, and his love of athletics and pop culture, Pianka's ultimate goal is to help as many people as possible who struggle to find motivation in regards to health and fitness.Medical providers are prone to dark moments, and life can be incredibly overwhelming. Pianka has personally always found ways to rise above his dark moments through his athletic hobbies and focus on family, but early in the COVID-19 pandemic, he fell into a spiral at the the prospect of being unable to care for those who depended on him. With a television announcing early statistics about pandemic mortality playing in the background while he learned that a significant portion of his practice—and ability to care for patients—was being restricted, he had an emotional breakdown. Facing physician burnout and depression, Pianka decided to sit down and write an outline about staying fit and healthy in a seemingly chaotic existence, and he kept writing until the sun came out (literally and metaphorically). What began as a simple reference guide for his patients, conceptualized prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, evolved into an unexpected second career as an inspirational writer. And, once it seemed possible after publication, he realized he wasn't done yet: All of his proceeds from the book will be donated to Ukraine relief. This book is entirely about creating meaningful difference for others, and the people in the Ukraine are the most in need of help right now. “Profits that would mean little to me in the grand scheme of things may mean everything to some of them.” It's All in Your Head was written directly for everyday individuals with busy lives and varied hobbies. Rather than another “how to” manual, it is a “why to” guide through the complicated space of fitness and nutrition. Incorporating the fundamental principles universal to successful diet and fitness programs and teaching self-motivation skills, It's All in Your Head unlocks doors to previously unrecognized potential and the ability to maintain fitness dreams. We have an in depth conversation about his personal experience with burnout and what the pandemic has been like from a front line workers perspective. We talk about the warning signs to look for, ways to start making positive changes and what he knows helped him permanently change things both mentally and physically. Joseph D. As a clinical psychologist with over twelve years of experience in the senior living space, Dr. Jennifer Stelter has a lot of experience with dementia. Dr. Jennifer is critical of the idea that pharmacological methods are the only way to address mental health conditions and she strives to provide knowledge of non-pharmacological tools and coping skills that can be used firstly. Together with her business partner Jessica Ryan, biologist, and aromatherapy educator, she created the dementia connection model which employs these types of tools for addressing dementia onset. Dr. Jennifer states that while dementia training should be part of any clinical psychology studies, it is instead left all down to nursing homes. Since most dementia training is just regulatory compliance, it will often be carried out without much real thought or planning and will not be effective. When there is a lack of education in this area staff will not know how to empathize and interact with residents with dementia which leaves them more inclined to become overwhelmed and quit.  In order for a dementia training to be effective, it must be engaging and ideally use sensory based exercises to put employees and caregivers in the position of those with dementia. Exercises that push people to think on their feet are also very important because this is an essential skill when caring for people with dementia. In a post pandemic world, these trainings should be up to date, after all there is evidence that COVID-19 can be a factor of dementia onset. Dr. Jennifer and Jessica will be opening their Dementia Connection Institute which provides in-person and virtual CE seminars and presentations, and staff trainings in all the tools and strategies of their model to staff and caregivers. FOLLOW DR.
