This Senate bill may have some unintended consequences for small businesses, according to consultant Andrea Hill. Join us as we take a magnifying glass to S.2992. This bill proposes to level the playing field between large and small businesses. Worryingly for small business owners, it actually contains some serious pitfalls. Chief among them: access to data security, and competition with large online retailers. The broad wording of this bill could allow large companies to continue dominating the marketplace. Want your voice to be heard? Reach out to your local senators and let them know your concerns. Meanwhile, you can find more of Andrea's thought-provoking work on Forbes.
Andrea Hill dealt with depression and complex PTSD for over a decade. She used SSRI medication but still felt depressed. She started researching psychedelics and had her first experience with LSD after tapering off her medication. On LSD, Andrea felt like she had received a hug from the universe. From there, Andrea did a number of intravenous ketamine infusions. She experienced ego death and felt as though she was a cloud floating through the universe. In one session, her deceased uncle visited her and offered her comfort. After researching ayahuasca, Andrea participated in two sessions at a retreat center in Florida. In the first session, she relived her uncle's funeral and some of her childhood traumas. In her second session, Andrea felt as though she had been reborn as a divine goddess. Andrea talks about how her life has changed since these experiences and describes some of the mindfulness practices she's adopted, including the use of float tanks, meditation, breathwork, and yoga. The purpose of the podcast is for entertainment and harm reduction. Andrea says that in order to stand out in this ever-evolving jewelry world, your company needs a story. The trio also covers climate change and technology. Listen Now[EMBED] Show Notes00:26 Rob and Victoria introduce Andrea Hill, CEO of Hill Management Group.05:57 Andrea describes what the jewelry industry is missing, based on past retail management experience.10:15 Building a successful jewelry business is all about telling a story, and Andrea explains what jewelers need to do just that.14:20 Climate change is real, and Andrea tells us about the “Kindness Economy.”15:13 Andrea serves in a mentorship role and leaves us the pillars to success. Episode CreditsHosts: Rob Bates and Victoria GomelskyEditor: Olivia BrileyProducer and engineer: Natalie ChometPlugs: jckonline.com, @jckmagazine Show Recap Introducing Andrea HillBased in eastern central Wisconsin, Andrea started her tenure in the jewelry industry at Rio Grande. Before she made it there, she worked in a billiards store that started selling video equipment, making her store one of the first video rental stores in the country, pre-Blockbuster. She also worked at Playboy Enterprises, building up their licensing for videos and creating a video catalog. She then bounced around companies as a CEO before landing in the jewelry industry. What The Industry Is MissingAndrea describes her company, Hill Management Group, where she helps people get ready for entering the digital age. You’ll hear her discuss what she has learned from other industries and what the jewelry industry should be taking away from them. She emphasizes that your jewelry company can’t just be the oldest around anymore, as people no longer have to settle for their neighborhood store for jewelry expertise. Jewelry Retail As Storytelling Andrea talks about need to have a rich content strategy. In order to develop your brand in the most efficient way possible, Andrea says you need to know who you are, what you do that makes you different, and why you matter in order to succeed—and that’s just the start. You then need to merchandise your store with products that fit that theme, and someone should always be creating new copy for your website. Kindness EconomyPost-recession, the vast majority of us have accepted that climate change is real and happening, and that something needs to be done about it. We need to be aware of the fact that we are not the center of the world, and other spaces and living things matter too. Andrea describes what she calls the “Kindness Economy” and what customers expect from the retailers they buy from. The Jewelry Industry Should Be Fun Switching topics to the mentor work Andrea does—she argues that mainstream jewelry has become far too generic for its own good. She once again emphasized the importance of your store’s story, giving an example of this in practice. Andrea concludes by telling us all to learn, try new things, experiment, and be willing to fail.

Previous Episode 805 I’ve always been a sensitive being, ever since I was a kid, I would be devastated if someone was treated poorly or thought poorly of themselves. I could not understand why people couldn’t see the the magic that resided within them. Most poignantly, I felt this most deeply, when I experienced the death of two dear friends that never received what they most longed for in life, to be loved and accepted, never understanding they were the key to access it all. Being a sensitive soul, as I am sure you can imagine (or perhaps can relate), I too struggled. I was bullied horribly in school and at home, and as a result became so seperated from the understanding of my value and who I was, that I became deeply challenged in my ability to connect with others in any way that honored me. My coping mechanism was perfectionism and people pleasing - not a good combo. Which resulted in years of making choices that did not reflect the aunthentic nature of who I was, or my innate value. After MANY shitty relationships, which included unhealthy ones with my body, my feminine nature, sex, and people in general; partnered with the cataclysmic life event of losing my beloved mother, I unwittingly (and not so gracefully) began my journey back home to myself. I began to look within instead of without. I reconnected with that sensitive little girl that had been doing her utmost to keep me safe amidst a treasure trove of self limiting beliefs and poor life choices as proof that I wasn’t good enough, and let her off the hook. As my awareness grew, I made the brave and conscious choice to dive into my own proverbial deep end, to start doing the loving work of clearing and cleaning up what had been keeping me from the truth of mySelf. That I am worthy and capable of giving and receiving great love. Now, I am no longer devastated when I witness others not loving and valuing themselves, because now, I can help. My first loving reminder to you… your path back home to you has been there all along. Let me show you the way. How easy is it to get basic information from your local government? According to an investigation by the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, not as easy as you might think. The papers asked for what should be readily available information from more than 700 municipalities, and the results were somewhat lacking. Andrea Hill joins Dave to talk about the project, what kind of information they were seeking, what roadblocks they hit, and why this matters.
Dr. Andrea Hill aka The Fight Doctress joins The Fight Science Podcast to discuss her role as a Ringside Physician with organisations such as the UFC, USA Boxing, IKF and ISKA. In this episode we cover CTE, the effects of dehydration on the brain, the difference between fluid being inside or outside of the cell, why sodium is so important in the body, at what point does cutting become much riskier, and why putting fluid back in the body doesn't necessarily mean you are rehydrating yourself adequately. This episode is a must listen for any combat athlete or coach who uses sweating techniques in their efforts to make weight.
Andrea Hill is a UX Researcher and Product Strategist. She has lead Innovation efforts at companies like LexisNexis, ReadyTalk, and through her own consultancy, Frameplay. Next up for her is a fellowship with Code for Canada, where she’ll be embedded within a division of the government of Canada for 10 months. If you’ve got a complex problem in need of an elegant solution, Andrea is someone you ought to listen to.
In this bonus episode of Over the Counter, Kyle Bullock talks with jewelry industry management consultant Andrea Hill on what jewelers need to do when facing challenges similar to the ones faced by the jewelry store featured in Episode 10 of the podcast.
In this episode, Nandi and I discuss underground midwifery in states where midwifery is currently illegal in the United States, as well as how she has been discovering ancestral herbal remedies for common birth injuries mothers experience. A lie is only powerful if you choose to believe it. So why do we fall for it every time? In this episode, we’ll hear four different stories. Each describes a tall tale, so persistent, that it’s hard to imagine someone keeping all the lies straight in their head. Each one of these stories reminds me of the movie The Truman Show. It seems like everyone I spoke with lived in a world carefully created just for them. Now it’s time to ask you. Have you ever been lied to? Or have you ever told a lie in order to do the right thing? I invite you to share your story on Pretend Radio. If selected, your story will be featured as bonus content on our Patreon channel. Patreon is a way that you can support the show. And who knows, your story could be featured on the main show. If you would like to share your story, record your story using your smartphone voice recording app and email your audio to javier@pretendradio.org. Or leave me a voice mail at (919) 867-1871.
