In a “live” version of the Nevin & Fred podcast at the Strategic Retirement Partners (SRP) annual conference, Nevin & Fred (& Bonnie Treichel & Tom Clark) covered recent litigation trends—and more! In recent months, the plaintiffs' bar has “discovered” a new litigation target:  the use of forfeitures to offset employer contributions, rather than to offset plan fees or to reallocate them to the remaining participants in the plan.  The expanded expert podcast panel reviews the current status, the trend(s), and what plan fiduciaries can/should do about it. And—on a related topic—what should/shouldn't be included in committee meeting minutes! Our panel shares detailed insights into the U.S. Leading Indicators, nonfarm payrolls, existing home sales, the Jackson Hole Symposium, the July FOMC meeting minutes, and the upcoming Key Wealth National Call.Speakers: Brian Pietrangelo, Managing Director of Investment StrategyCindy Honcharenko, Director of Fixed Income Portfolio ManagementRajeev Sharma, Head of Fixed Income 02:19 - The US Leading Indicators released by The Conference Board showed the month of July was down and that was followed by a decline in June, as well02:45 – The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised the Nonfarm Payroll report for the prior year by roughly 818,000 less 03:09 – Existing home sales grew 1.3% in July, halting the four-month sales decline which began in March03:46 – The Federal Reserve Chair, Jerome Powell, spoke at the Jackson Hole Symposium just hours ago04:53 – The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) released the meeting minutes from July's meeting. The overall theme observed was wide support for a September rate cut as the inflation risk has diminished and the risks to the labor market have increased06:38 – During Fed Chair Powell's press conference this morning, he addressed changing the direction of monetary policy as inflation has eased, the job market is not overheated, and the global supply chain has normalized. However, for rate cuts, the Fed will depend on incoming data08:33 – Fed Chair Powell seemed to have balanced and neutralized comments at his press conference this morning in regards to cutting rates by 25 basis points in September, but only if the data is encouraging 15:07 - Based on previous economic strategy, it seems that the Fed typically cuts rate by 25 basis points before it loosens or tightens its policies to not incite panic in the market. Even so, is the Fed too late to the game? 20:50 – Final comments highlighting the upcoming Key Wealth National Call Wednesday, September 4th at 1:00pm EST. Additional ResourcesKey Questions: "You're Killin' Me Smalls!" In this Real Estate News Brief for the week ending May 25th, 2024... what the Fed meeting minutes are telling us about inflation, how much single-family homes are shrinking, and which cities are attracting millennials.   Hi, I'm Kathy Fettke and this is Real Estate News for Investors. Before we get started, I want to invite you to join me in San Antonio for our property tour on June 8. We will be meeting with a builder there who has brand new duplexes and 4plexes for sale, and is willing to buy down the interest rate for our Real Wealth investors. You can get the details at newsforinvestors.com, just sign up for a free membership and click on the Connect tab for info on our tours. See you there!   Now let's begin with economic news from this past week. Minutes from the Federal Reserve's last monetary policy meeting show that officials are becoming more concerned about a lack of progress on inflation. Members of the Federal Open Market Committee noted that inflation has come down a lot over the past year but is currently stalled. Several expressed a willingness to raise rates further if necessary, although some Fed officials, including Fed Chief Jerome Powell, have said publicly that they don't think their next move will be a rate hike. Short-term rates have been in a range of 5.25% to 5.5% since July of last year...   ...That's it for today. You can read more about the stories in this episode by following links in the show notes at newsforinvestors.com. The US Federal Reserve say rates will continue to go up in the short term but there is still a long road ahead. Author and economist Linda Yueh explains why and Susan Schmidt from Exchange Capital Resources in Chicago tells us about the impact on the markets. Cuba says it will allow foreign investors into its wholesale and retail trade for the first time in 60 years. The policy aims to tackle shortages of basic goods, like food and medicine - but stops short of fully opening trade. We speak to Ricardo Torres, a Research Fellow at the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at American University in Washington who's been a consultant to Cuban and foreign companies interested in Cuba. Elon Musk's tweets suggesting that he wanted to buy Manchester United caused markets to briefly jump by as much as 17%, before Musk clarified it was a joke. Alex Shaw, general editor at the cable sports channel ESPN in the UK, gives his analysis.
