Season 5 is coming very soon and this season, we're talking about the thing that's on everyone's mind (whether we like or not) — money. Maybe you've heard that Native American proverb, “Only when the last tree has been cut down, the last fish been caught, and the last stream poisoned, will we realize we cannot eat money.”But, the way we spend our money matters, and as a mindful consumer, financial decisions can feel like a burden — especially when we don't have much control over them. We can often choose where to spend our money, but we can't choose what companies do with that money. Our society doesn't run on money, it runs on the earth— water, soil, plants, air. As of late — we'll call it the past 300 years — we've had a pretty one-sided relationship with these essentials we need to live and that largely has to do with the fact that what we value and the way we value it is measured in dolla dolla bills. This season we're talking about — How the rising cost of groceries is threatening food security in ways you might not expect If giving our money to offsets is actually worth itThe companies that are lobbying for fossil fuelsHow everyday people are footing the bill for data centersDecades of war propping up the fossil fuel industry, and how that extends to our front lawns. What it's going to take to get proper investment in sustainable aviation fuelSubscribe so you don't miss an episode!

You know full well that I am a dog lover, and I know that many of you are dog lovers, or just pet lovers in general. They are our family, and much like humans, our domesticated pets have a pretty big impact on our planet and the environment around us. Think about walking into a store like PetSmart, or even your local pet store, there are aisles and shelves lined with single use toys, plastic bones, and items destined for one use just destined for the landfill. But that's not all, we've done several dog related episodes including one on the impact of our pet's waste and another on pet food and the reliance on high impact meats. I'll link both episodes in the description below. In today's episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on some uncomfortable truths I've been noticing lately - about self-improvement, manifestation culture, and constant content consumption - and how, when taken too far, they can quietly erode your self-confidence instead of building it. This is a candid, reflective conversation about discernment, personal power, and remembering that you are not broken, behind, or missing anything. Here's what we explore in this episode:How personal development can unintentionally reinforce the belief that you're “not enough yet”Why over-consuming podcasts, content, and coaching advice can block intuition and self-trustThe subtle ways manifestation “rules” turn into pressure, fear, and perfectionismHow marketing and social media can quietly chip away at confidence if you're not discerningThe difference between healthy growth and constantly trying to fix yourselfWhy self-trust, not more information, is the real foundation of confidenceHow identity work can feel expansive instead of heavy, exhausting, or never-endingThe shift from “what do I need to heal?” to “what if I'm already enough to receive?”If this episode resonates, let it be an invitation to slow down, tune inward, and clean up what you're consuming - not because you need to be better, but because you deserve to feel grounded, confident, and at peace with who you already are. “We are a culture addicted to our ‘Christian crack,'” says Shane Idleman, the lead pastor of Westside Christian Fellowship. As the author of I Almost Quit: My Journey of Leading Through the Landmines of Ministry, Shane has been through the highs and lows of Christian ministry. He discusses the positive impact that prayer and fasting have had on his life and advocates for the routine use of fasting in our Christian walk to seek a closer relationship with the Lord. Shane also talks about the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and how it honors the Lord, as well as how we tend to, as Christians, still cling to worldly and comfortable addictions - whether it's caffeine, fried food, or a bad habit. “Fasting doesn't kill you,” he says. “Overconsumption does.”TAKEAWAYSFasting allows Christians to focus on CHRIST rather than their desiresCaffeine overstimulates the central nervous systemThe more you're filled with the Holy Spirit, the easier it will be to push discouragement out of your lifeWe can't be disobedient in stewarding our health and expect physical miracles at the same time

The holiday season often comes wrapped in pressure—to spend more, do more, and give more than feels sustainable. Between sales, social expectations, and emotional spending, it's easy to drift into stress, debt, or overconsumption, all in the name of “holiday spirit.” But it doesn't have to be that way.In this episode, we're reframing holiday spending through a conscious, values-based lens. This isn't about guilt, deprivation, or saying no to joy—it's about choosing intentionally. Choosing peace over pressure. Presence over purchases. Meaning over excess. When we slow down and become mindful of where our energy and money are going, we create holidays that feel supportive instead of draining. We'll explore how to honor generosity without abandoning your financial wellbeing, how to release the idea that love must be proven through spending, and how to create a season that actually reflects your core values—connection, care, and authenticity—rather than consumerism. This is an invitation to design a holiday that feels calm, aligned, and genuinely fulfilling, long after the decorations come down

Listeners are invited to examine the uncomfortable parallels between cult behavior and brand loyalty—and to confront just how easily marketing can tap into our fears, anxieties, and identities.Drawing from her research and insights featured in the Emmy-winning Netflix documentary Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy, Dr. Einstein explains how modern marketing operates within what she calls the “anxiety economy.” From endless doom-scrolling to influencer-driven consumerism, she reveals how technology and advertising combine to keep us hooked, anxious, and buying. The conversation unpacks the continuum between brand fandom and fanaticism, using examples from Apple to Weight Watchers to show how manipulation thrives when emotional needs meet persuasive design. But this isn't a hopeless picture—Dr. Einstein also offers guidance for marketers and consumers alike. She challenges professionals to embrace ethics without sacrificing creativity and encourages all of us to become more conscious of how we engage with brands. By replacing reflexive scrolling with mindful consumption and by choosing community over cultish loyalty, listeners can reclaim agency in an economy built on influence. This episode is a must-hear for anyone who wants to understand—and resist—the subtle ways marketing shapes our thoughts, habits, and values.Chapters:00:00 – Intro & Welcome00:50 – Meet Dr. Mara Einstein02:10 – Why Talk About Cults and Marketing?03:30 – How the Book “Hoodwinked” Began05:10 – The Cult–Marketing Continuum06:45 – From Attention Economy to Anxiety Economy08:50 – How Anxiety Fuels Overconsumption10:25 – “Buy Now” and Viewer Reactions12:30 – Black Friday and the “Economic Blackout”14:10 – Conscious Consumption in a Digital World16:00 – The Line Between Persuasion and Manipulation17:30 – The Genius and Ethics of Duolingo's Campaigns18:45 – When Brand Community Becomes Brand Cult20:15 – Weight Watchers: A Case Study in Cult Tactics27:00 – The Role of Social Media in Modern Tribalism31:30 – Identity and the Brands We Choose37:00 – Ethical Marketing and Real Community41:10 – The Danger of Making It Hard to Leave44:30 – How AI and Bots Change the Deception Game50:00 – Building Awareness and Resilience53:00 – Closing Thoughts & Where to Find Dr. EinsteinQuotes:“We don't live in an attention economy — we live in an anxiety economy. Soursop, also known as graviola or guanabana, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat conditions ranging from arthritis and infections to digestive issues and fevers Research shows that compounds in soursop disrupt cancer cell growth, balance blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and support immune function Drinking soursop tea provides calming effects, supports digestion, boosts skin health, and delivers antioxidants that protect your body from oxidative stress Overconsumption of soursop, especially daily use in large amounts, raises your risk of neurological problems, so moderation is key for safety The safest way to benefit from soursop is to enjoy the fresh fruit or tea a few times per week, always removing the seeds, and combining it with other healthy lifestyle habits for maximum effect
When we think of those who have high blood sugar, we tend to think of people with diabetes, as they often have to monitor their levels and sometimes undergo insulin treatment. But actually everybody can have blood sugar spikes, and many of us do without even realising. These occur when a simple sugar called glucose builds up in the blood. This is known as hyperglycemia. High blood sugar can make your mouth dry, make you feel thirsty, give you blurred vision and make you need to pee often. Overconsumption, particularly of added sugar, can lead to a calorie surplus, and therefore result in weight gain. Being overweight can in turn lead to other health issues, like heart disease and other problems. Consuming too much sugar can also damage your teeth. Do I need to be cutting sugar out of my diet completely then? What can I do about it then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! The United States and China wrapped up the third round of high-level trade negotiations earlier this week. American and Chinese negotiators met in Stockholm on July 28 and 29. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the talks as constructive and wide ranging. He acknowledged that an extension of the 90-day tariff pause was discussed but said that the final decision was up to President Trump. As of today – August 1 – Trump has remained mum. The Chinese side's readout was devoid of details, although China's vice minister of commerce said that both countries would continue to push for an extension of the reciprocal tariffs and Chinese countermeasures. How should we assess the dynamics in the trade talks, including the balance of leverage between Washington and Beijing? And how might the trade negotiations shape the future of the US-China relationship? To discuss these questions, we are joined by Dr. Scott Kennedy. Scott is senior adviser and trustee chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
