A third of greenhouse gas emissions come from the food industry, largely from meat, dairy and eggs. The international Plant Based Treaty aims to combat this by advocating for a vegan diet as a key solution to climate change. Backed by cities, universities, Nobel laureates and thousands of individuals, it seeks to align global efforts with the Paris Agreement. Paige Parsons Roache's path to veganism and activism was sparked by a series of significant life events, including the tragic loss of her brother and her daughter's choice to embrace a vegan lifestyle. During her appearance on the NHA Health Science Podcast hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Paige recounted her journey and expressed her dedication to fostering a compassionate and eco-friendly way of life. As the Communications Director of Unchained TV and co-founder of Plant-based in the Burbz, she has become a prominent figure in the vegan movement. From Personal Loss to Advocacy Paige's brother's tragic death due to mental health issues sparked her interest in understanding the impact of diet on mental well-being. This personal tragedy, coupled with her daughter's early adoption of veganism, led Paige to explore the connections between food, health, and compassion. Her journey was further catalyzed by watching the documentary Cowspiracy, which highlighted the environmental impact of animal agriculture. This experience inspired her to fully embrace a vegan lifestyle and to advocate for environmental sustainability. Building a Vegan Media Presence As the Communications Director of Unchained TV, Paige has played a pivotal role in producing and promoting content that supports veganism and animal rights. Her work includes the development of the Amazon Prime show "New Day New Chef," which showcases plant-based cooking and lifestyle. Paige also co-hosts "Plant-based in the Burbz," a show that aims to make vegan cooking accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Through these platforms, she emphasizes the importance of collaboration and communication in promoting a vegan lifestyle. A Commitment to Compassion and Sustainability Paige's activism extends beyond the media, as she is deeply involved in various community initiatives, including food banks and education programs. She is a strong advocate for the Plant-Based Treaty, which seeks to promote plant-based food systems to combat climate change and improve public health. Paige's commitment to a cruelty-free lifestyle is evident in her choices, from her wardrobe to her personal care products, all of which are vegan and eco-friendly. The Power of Food and Mental Wellness Paige discussed the profound impact that a plant-based diet has had on her mental health. She highlighted how eliminating animal products from her diet significantly reduced her experience of dark days, replacing them with a more balanced emotional state. This personal testimony underscores the broader benefits of a vegan lifestyle, not only for physical health but also for mental well-being. www.HealthScience.org/095-Paige-Parsons-Roache

Exmouth has become the fifth UK council to endorse the call for a global Plant Based Treaty to address food impacts on the climate emergency, joining climate leaders Edinburgh, Norwich, Lambeth and Haywards Heath. In a statement issued by Exmouth Town Council, they said, "Exmouth Town Council has declared its commitment to making Exmouth cleaner, greener and healthier by endorsing the call for the Plant Based Treaty. This endorsement was made as part of their Climate Action Plan, which aims to combat the climate crisis and make the town a thriving, zero-carbon community." Exmouth aims to reduce carbon footprint Exmouth resident and Town Councillor, Louise Venables, expressed her pride in the town's efforts to become a zero-carbon community and the importance of endorsing the Plant Based Treaty at a critical time, "Switching to an increasingly plant-based diet is the simplest and one of the most effective actions we can take to reduce our carbon emissions. Plant-based diets can also improve health, remedy biodiversity, improve animal welfare, and be financially beneficial. Andrew Garner, Plant Based Treaty UK campaigner, said, "2023 was the world's hottest year on record, and Exmouth has rightfully recognised the importance of plant-based food solutions and rewilding to address multiple planetary crises. Their climate leadership in calling for a Plant Based Treaty offers hope that we can address food emissions which account for a third of greenhouse gas emissions. In the Plant Based Treaty motion, which passed at a full council meeting in December, Exmouth committed to a number of plant-based food and rewilding policies: Promote plant-based foods. Include campaigns/activities to encourage a switch to plant-based foods in our Climate Action Plan Design public information campaigns to raise awareness about the climate and the environmental advantages and health benefits of plant-based food, nutrition and cooking Aim to reduce the public's consumption of animal-based food through education in schools, organisations and local businesses Transition to plant-based meal plans when catering for climate-related meetings, events etc. Help to restore key ecosystems and reforest the earth. Support reforestation projects and convene a tree forum to provide transparency and encourage collaboration between stakeholders in Exmouth Focus shift on nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation (in ETC's consultative planning role) Cities: support initiatives to increase trees and wildflowers, increase green community projects, wildlife corridors, green rooftops, local growing schemes, work towards biodiversity increases (in our consultative planning role and in our environment policy) Enhance food justice by supporting projects that provide access to healthy food for all, especially low-income communities (support projects like Mushroom, a food community network in Exmouth) Background The Plant Based Treaty is modelled on the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and inspired by treaties that have addressed the threats of ozone layer depletion and nuclear weapons. It has been endorsed by 24 municipalities worldwide, including Edinburgh, Norwich, Lambeth, Exmouth, Haywards Heath and Los Angeles. Since its launch in August 2021, the initiative has received support from 130,000 individual endorsers, 5 Nobel laureates, IPCC scientists, and more than 3000 groups and businesses, including Veganuary, Ecotricity, Linda McCartney Foods, Plant Based Health Professionals, UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, and chapters of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. The Plant Based Treaty has secured high-profile endorsements from celebrities, including Chris Packham and Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney, who issued a written statement calling for politicians to support the Plant-Based Treaty. They said: "We believe in justice for animals, the environment and people. That's why we support the Plant Based Treaty and urge individuals and gove...

Bailey is a young animal rights activist, known for disrupting a dolphin show at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park when he was 14 years old.Bailey went vegan after watching YouTube videos which connected him to how meat, dairy and eggs are created. He was shocked and appalled that these companies were meant to be RSPCA approved and he instantly knew he no longer wanted to support them. Bailey's love for marine life, and dolphins in particular was forged after watching the documentary "Black Fish". Bailey regularly protests dolphins being kept in captivity and is calling on the government to support retirement plans for dolphins currently kept in captivity. Bailey works with a number of organisations that align with his values including PETA, World Animal Protection and Animal Justice Party. Recent PETA demonstrations include human meat trays in Pitt Street Mall, forced mouse swim tests in Bondi Pool and a greyhound protest at Wentworth Park. Bailey is also involved in wildlife advocacy campaigns such a koala extinction, Drop Croc and the Nike Kangaroo Massacre. He is a Youth Ambassador for The Plant Based Treaty calling on politicians and councils to recognise the link between animal agriculture and climate change. In this episode, Bailey shares the importance of political parties in bringing about change for animals, transitioning captive dolphins to sea sanctuaries and connecting with nature. https://www.instagram.com/warriorforanimals/

Political leaders from around the world are gathered in Germany this week for the Bonn Climate Change Conference. The climate campaign group Plant Based Treaty wants to see the conference endorse a plant-based food system to help fight climate catastrophe. But Beef and Lamb New Zealand says sustainable nutrition is possible in a meat-based diet. Chief executive Kit Arkwright spoke to Corin Dann.
Before prepping for todays interview I saw the Animal Save Movement as a global network of passionate animal rights activists committed to baring witness outside slaughterhouses with both the knowledge that transparency and truth is the biggest threat to animal agriculture. And also the hope that if slaughterhouse houses had glass walls (or at least an animal vigil at every slaughterhouse) then the world would be vegan. These statements are of course true, ... We discuss the Plant Based Treaty with Greta Cuthell, organiser for Youth Climate Save VIC and why our food systems are inextricably linked to the climate crisis. Greta is an animal advocate and activist, ambassador for climate action and a vegan. The Plant Based Treaty has been designed as a companion to the UNFCCC/Paris Agreement and is the first of its kind to put food systems at the heart of combating the climate crisis. The Treaty aims to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture, to promote a shift to more healthy, sustainable plant-based diets and to actively reverse damage done to planetary functions, ecosystem services and biodiversity. The #COP26 Cop Out Climate Conference INSIDE STORY! World leaders converged on Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021 to try and stave off the approaching climate apocalypse! But, as vegan activist Greta Thunberg famously said of the “leaders” efforts… “BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.” Greta led tens, even hundreds of thousands of protesters on the streets outside the conference, denouncing the summit as a PR move and demanding REAL change. COP26 actually served meat/fish and had the nerve to call itself “plant forward.” The biggest headline from the conference was how the menu was “like serving cigarettes at a lung cancer conference.” #JaneUnChained is #LIVE from #COP26Glasgow talking to vegan activists from PlantBasedTreaty.org, the Animal Save Movement and Climate Healers! Our correspondent Jill Carnegie and Plant Based Treaty's Lia Phillips reveal how they got to former Vice President Al Gore as Lia directly asked him to sign the Plant Based Treaty! Youth activist Vegan Evan joins with his mom Shannon Blair from Scotland. Anita Krajnc, of the Save Movement. and Dr Sailesh Rao of Climate Healers will talk about how they're trying to get leaders to admit the horrific impact of animal agriculture on the climate. Journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell moderates!

Anita Krajnc is formerly a professor of Political Studies at Queens University in Kingston, but she's better known as the co-founder of Toronto Pig Save, an organization that bears witness to animals in their final moments as they approach slaughterhouses. Since 2010 the Animal Save Movement has become a global phenomenon, with 1000 chapters in many different countries, and it includes Climate Save, Youth Climate Save, and Health Save chapters in addition to Animal Save. The collective mission of the Animal Save Movement is to spread the idea that we all have a moral duty to bear witness, end animal agriculture, and reforest the Earth. In 2019 Anita was named one of Toronto's most inspirational women, and she is here today to tell us about the Climate Save Movement's new Plant Based Treaty project. https://plantbasedtreaty.org https://thesavemovement.org ****************************** Thanks to Vox Vegana for the intro music. A recent peer-reviewed scientific report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was described by the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, as a ‘code red for humanity'. The report warns of the severe consequences of inadequate action to contain climate change and avoid irreversible impacts known as tipping points. Emissions of methane associated with human activity account for over a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change. Methane is more potent than carbon dioxide but has a much shorter life. A rapid and big cut in global methane emissions would therefore slow down global heating significantly whilst buying time to tackle the more difficult sources of greenhouse gas emissions that involve capital expenditure. Methane is the main greenhouse gas associated with meat and dairy consumption. Much of it is a product of the digestive systems of ruminants such as cows and sheep but other aspects of animal agriculture produce it too. It's responsible for 42% of global methane emissions whereas the oil and gas industry only accounts for 36%. Waste is the source of a further 18%. Despite animal agriculture being the biggest source of methane emissions, the focus of calls for reduction so far has been on emissions from the oil and gas industry. This is despite the fact that dietary change need not result in extra costs to individuals. To put this in context, meat and dairy consumption is responsible for between 16.5% and 87% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. The lower estimate is deficient in a number of ways including not reflecting the fact that land used for animal agriculture could be much more effectively used for absorbing carbon from the atmosphere than for grazing animals for food production and for growing animal feed crops. Like the elephant in the room, the urgent need to reduce meat and dairy consumption, preferably eliminate it, is rarely recognised by politicians as a valid or viable tool in tackling climate change. This is despite being urged to do so by scientists and other experts. The title of this episode of Time is Sliding is therefore trying to draw attention to this. The need to move away from diets based on meat and dairy consumption is not even on the agenda for discussion at the crucially important COP26 climate change conference being held in Glasgow UK in November 2021. That conference is being attended by world leaders and other representatives of countries around the world. It's being seen as the last chance saloon for stopping climate change getting out of human control. This episode explores the contribution of meat and dairy consumption to climate change, in more detail than here, and attempts to find reasons why the huge herd of cows in the COProom are being ignored. Agricultural systems also need to change. Listeners might therefore wish to add their signatures to those calling for a Plant Based Treaty to parallel the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement that it produced. Listeners might also be interested in the UK Vegan Society's 2021 report called “Planting value in the Food System”. It sets out a vision for food and farming based on interviews with farmers and experts on health, environmental and food policy. More at https://timeissliding.earthThanks for listening.
