Pat speaks to William Dakota Compton, candidate for Congress in Kentucky's 1st district. Compton is a public school music teacher who has seen first-hand how the move to defund schools has affected the quality of education for our nation's youth. He worked as a fast-food worker through college and grad school, and speaks about the grueling and demanding nature of such jobs, the need for more unions, and the need to pay all workers a living wage. Compton is openly gay and his candidacy represents hope and recognition for countless youth and adults in his district, state, and the South in general who are questioning their identities or sexualities and who might not feel safe in their homes or communities to say anything about it or come out publicly. Also - Dan is back from the wilderness of New Hampshire - back in time to argue the finer points of Student Debt Cancellation. Up next for TDS podcast: philosophy professor and author of Give them an Argument: Logic for the Left will sit down with CMoney Burns of the TDS pod to talk about the Left, about Cancel Culture, and about how to forge ahead without getting into the traps of Left in-fighting. After CMoney's conversation with Ben Burgis, we will feature an interview with Kurt Andersen, author of "Evil Geniuses: the Unmaking of America." In this episode (cross-published with Growing Down) I talked with Ben Burgis. Ben is a philosophy instructor at Georgia State University Perimeter College, a Jacobin columnist, and the host of the “Give Them An Argument” podcast and YouTube show. He is also the author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left and the forthcoming Canceling Comedians While the World Burns: A Critique of the Contemporary Left. During the session, we touched on the cosmopolitan socialism of our mutual friend, the great Michael Brooks (Rest in Power), and why his vision of an integral left could be (or maybe ought to be) the future of international socialism. Logic, the study of how certain arguments either succeed or fail to support their conclusions, is one of the most important topics in philosophy, its importance illustrated by the common assumption that if one is being logical, they are probably right. However, the importance of logic has led to a certain amount of misuse and abuse over the years, with questionable arguments being given a veneer of reasonableness to cover up some questionable philosophical mechanics. In a way this is nothing new; since the beginning of philosophy there has been an ongoing tension between true philosophers and sophists. The form this sophistry takes is often a reflection of the particular political and cultural questions that are being debated, and so any attempt to make sense of one's times and build any sort of popular consensus will require diving into the pseudologic and deconstructing it, hopefully with a better argument in its place. This is the project of Ben Burgis in his book Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left (Zero Books, 2019). Both a professor of philosophy and a committed political leftist, Burgis wades through a host of contemporary examples, arguing that the common arguments for capitalism and against socialism often rely on questionable logic that can be debated. On top of this, he argues that the left needs to learn to better integrate logical thinking into its own analysis, and communicate its ideas in ways that not only maintain their rigor, but offer clarity to a wider swathe of people. Ben Burgis is a philosophy instructor at Georgia State University Perimeter College. His writing has appeared in a number of outlets including Jacobin, Areo and Quillette. Amazin'! On this very special episode of Breadsheet (part 1 of 2), Hoss chats with Georgia State University logic / philosophy professor and author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left (Zero Books) Ben Burgis. The main focus in this part is Mr. Burgis's background-- where he grew up, family situation, and all that-- and how it has influenced his politics and worldview. I hope this isn't cultural appropriation, but he's a real mensch, this guy. Make sure to come back in a couple days for part 2! Plus: Hoss Recommends some stuff, reflects on his some of his experiences around the great Chadwick Boseman (RIP), and debuts yet MORE silly music. Much love, and may the quantum fabric of spacetime forever exercise its coldest embrace upon your enemies. None shall escape this mortal coil! I registered the domain HOSS.FUN but apparently there's some kind of security thing (it's just a redirect to my Wordpress), so I'm gonna have to email them to get it fixed. This one is kinda insane I think I said I was going to make the minisodes shorter and more focused on the last episode? Anyway here's an hour of whatever this is. Topics covered include The Matrix, The Wachowskis, socialism, leftism, LGBTQ (specifically trans) issues, Propagandhi, Ben Burgis, facts, logic, Ben Shapiro, WAPs, and much more. I think there are four pieces of my original music featured? It's 6:27AM and I haven't slept. Yes, I had finished the podcast by 9 or so, but I was waiting to release it.... but then I started writing something and was like "THAT'S what this episode needed!" I was gonna visit my parents today but I might not be able to now. I'm headed to the beach tomorrow, so I'm gonna use the next week to do a bit of editing and prepping for interviews. Ben Burgis of Zer0 Books is the author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left. He joins us to conduct a reading of analytic Marxist G.A. Cohen’s noted essay, “The Structure of Proletarian Unfreedom”. In addition to dissecting the argument, we discuss Ben’s book as well of the current state of academic philosophy and online discourse.
The roiling tremors on the left continue, as a young progressive data analyst gets fired for... it's honestly too ridiculous to even type, but it basically involves tweeting a thing that is true. As if that weren't enough, the Poetry Foundation shows us what a truly hysterical meltdown looks like. The hosts use their intellect and savvy to try to understand the difference between two 'violent' acts: "kneeling on someone's neck until they die horrifically" and "issuing a statement that isn't quite strong enough." For this, the first-ever patrons-only Blocked and Reported interview, Jesse interviewed Ben Burgis, a philosopher, prolific writer for Jacobin and other outlets, and the author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left. Among other subjects, the duo discussed self-sabotaging messaging on the left, the flaws in Jordan Peterson's conception of 'post-modernism,' and the class element missing from the police-reform discussion. At the end, Jesse tried to get Ben to turn him into a socialist. Did it work? Only one way to find out. A few articles by Ben: "Socialism and Human Nature," "Capitalism Isn’t Working. In 2016, Jordan Peterson, a relatively obscure professor of psychology, released several videos on YouTube making critical remarks on political correctness and related political legislation. This would kick off a meteoric rise in fame, with sold-out live shows, podcasts, television interviews and a worldwide bestselling book. Along with his newfound fame, however, came a lot of criticism, much of it from progressive commentators, most recently in the form of Myth and Mayhem: A Leftist Critique of Jordan Peterson (Zero Books, 2020) The book features several contributions from four authors, as well as an introduction by Slavoj Zizek, who debated Peterson in 2019. It engages with Peterson’s core ideas, while offering critical analysis from leftist perspectives. Ben Burgis has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Miami. Ben Burgis teaches philosophy at Rutgers. He also writes for Jacobin, and delivers regular essays to his patrons, in addition to appearing on the Michael Brooks show regularly. He recently wrote a book called Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left. We discuss his book, the left in general, and the arguments over Bernie being endorsed by Joe Rogan. ***due to a number of technical issues before and during the recording, we ran out of time and the interview had to end a bit abruptly. Ben Burgis is a philosopher and logician who lectures at Rutgers University. He has a segment on the Michael Brooks Show called the Debunk and writes a weekly column for Jacobin magazine. We spend most of the show talking about his book Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left, which challenges the left to take logic more seriously. Ben's Twitter: https://twitter.com/benburgis?lang=en And Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/benburgis We also discuss: The aesthetic of reason being adopted to defend bad arguments, why the left needs to make better arguments for their positions, the limits of logic in persuading people whose material interest differ from ours, why left principles for redistribution don't stop at our borders, conflict vs mistake theory in explaining the motivations of our political opponents, and where each theory may apply, the importance of interpreting our allies' arguments charitably, Ben's thoughts on moral philosophy, why tankies are bad utilitarians, double standards for Marx vs other problematic philosophers from history, Jeremy Bentham's good takes, state monopoly on violence and police reforms, where Ben disagrees with the left, the problems with a radically empirical worldview, whether utilitarianism takes you to implausible places, and how to balance epistemic humility with the need to beat confident bullshitters. On this edition of Parallax Views, a casual conversation with a rising star in the YouTube left media space, Cole James Cash of GNN (Ghetto News Network). Cole has been giving his take on current events through GNN since March of last year. He's also interviewed such personalities as Jamie Peck of the Antifada podcast, author Ben Burgis of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left fame, and progressive commentator Benjamin Dixon. Additionally he has tussled with such figures as Tulsi Gabbard supporter Niko House and, most infamously, black conservative broadcaster Jesse Lee Peterson. In this free-wheeling conversation Cole and I discuss rap music (before GNN Cole was a rapper), the military, American history, and much more. And yes, we do discuss his confrontation with Jesse Lee Peterson. SUPPORT PARALLAX VIEWS ON PATREON! WHERE YOU CAN HEAR... PARALLAX VIEWSTHE WEEK THAT WASCURRENT EVENTSPROGRAM

What is the purpose of debate? Is it to convince somebody, somewhere of something, or is it merely to undermine the other side and bolster your own prejudices? You may have noticed that political discourse is not always conducted in a civil and measured manner. Especially when the participants are physically removed from each other, say via journalistic writing or social media. In particular, right-wing polemicists are fond of throwing around terms like ‘libtards’, and claiming to have ‘crushed’ or ‘destroyed’ their opponents. There is an unattractive swagger to the claims of some of these people to have exclusive title to the use of logic. Ben Burgis, a philosophy PhD … Continue reading →
