President Donald Trump just made some new public statements about the Russia-Ukraine war, and they were thoroughly unimpressive. At one point, he seemed to get angry at Vladimir Putin over a massive new Russian attack on Ukraine, calling on Putin to “STOP.” But then in remarks to reporters, he openly suggested that he doesn't expect Russia to make any serious concessions at all in the quest for peace. This striking public admission badly undercuts Trump's “master dealmaker” mystique, and wrecks the illusion he's cultivated that he expects genuine concessions from both sides. We talked to Ben Burgis, a columnist at Jacobin and a podcaster who has a good new piece for MSNBC.com analyzing Trump's negotiating strategy. Burgis explains why Trump's approach is likely to be counterproductive at best—and why it could produce catastrophic long-term results.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? Ever wondered what the creative process is behind the films, TV shows and theatre productions you watch? Well, Crew Chats is a podcast that goes behind the scenes and speaks to the crew that help make these productions. Have you ever wondered about the sound of footsteps echoing in a hallway, the rhythmic trot of a horse, the rustle of clothing, or even the clatter of a wand in your favourite film or TV show? Those sounds don't just happen—they're created by Foley artists. And in this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Foley artist, Pete Burgis, who is so passionate about the craft. We talked about what Foley involves, how he found his way into this fascinating world, some of the strangest props he's ever used, and he even recreated some sounds just for us! Credits include: Blood Brothers, Paddington 1 &2, Batman Begins, Harry Potter films from Chamber of Secrets - Deathly Hallows part2 Pete's Recommendations: Twin Peaks Shaun of the Dead Gladiator 2

The wildfires in Los Angeles county have brought a multitude of difficult and prevailing questions to the forefront of the region as well as the system of capitalism. Joining host Robert Scheer on this episode of the Scheer Intelligence podcast is Jacobin Magazine columnist Ben Burgis to discuss writer Mike Davis and how his book, “The Ecology of Fear: Los Angeles and the Imagination of Disaster,” (February 1998) serves as a kind of prognosis for everything going wrong in Los Angeles today. The two dissect the multitude of issues at play in the wildfire disasters: the conceit of real estate developers testing the limits of nature, the passive and active exploitation of the working class to make and now handle the disaster, the greed of for-profit insurance companies cancelling policies, and the decisions by a major county like Los Angeles in foregoing budgets to handle these inevitable disasters. Burgis asks, “If the public is just frankly going to be on the hook for it, do we, in fact, need to be building this densely in areas this prone to fire? I think at the very least, that's something that should be a question for public discussion in a way that it's just not.”

One of Us Is the Killer & Why Trump Isn't a Fascist   Some weeks ago, we dropped the fourth issue of The Crisis Papers on TIR, a collection of essays addressing diverse topics, available for free to all patrons. In this latest issue, we examine the futility of online outrage, particularly directed at what I've termed political “opinionists.” The inspiration for this paper came from a clip I posted of a rant on the phenomena of media “heel turns,” the overuse of the term “grift,” and the impotence of the online mob. The modern practice of “stan'ing” a celebrity or media figure has always unsettled me. While the term has declined in popularity, I don't believe this signals a decrease in fandom. Rather, fandom has adapted, reflecting a broader trend of managed allegiance in our digital age. In the article, we explore how the relationship between fandom and celebrity, particularly in leftist digital spaces, often substitutes symbolic gestures for substantive political action. Alan Moore, author of Watchmen, recently critiqued this shift, describing fandom as a “toxic” force, transforming admiration into fundamentalism and vendettas. Moore warns that this echo chamber, driven by strict orthodoxy, fosters ideological purges that many mistake for genuine activism—a digital gulag maintained by what could be called a cyber-Stalinist regime.   From the article:    This strained relationship between fandom and celebrity, especially within left-leaning digital spaces, exemplifies the illusion of political participation in the absence of real structural change. As Alan Moore, the author of Watchmen, recently argued, "fandom has toxified the world.” In an interview with The Guardian Moore explains how fandom now manifests as a mechanism for obsessive control, often spilling over into vendettas against the creators they once admired. "We've reached a point where fandom has begun to resemble religious fundamentalism," Moore suggests, where adherence to a narrow orthodoxy defines the worth of creators and personalities alike. This environment creates an echo chamber where any slight deviation from a perceived leftist consensus is seen as ideological treason, worthy of condemnation and social media shaming—a ritual that many mistake for genuine political activism. The virtual gulag is the destination that the cyber Stalinist regime is campaigning for.   Beyond the article, which our guest helped edit, we'll discuss his most recent piece in Damage magazine titled, “Is Trump Hitler or Just Woodrow Wilson?”. In the article our guest Ben Burgis lays out a coherent argument on why the fascist argument about Donald Trump obscures his actual goals with administration, and how the fascism framework in liberal circles is designed to engage true leftists away from the fight for redistribution of wealth, building a strong workers movement, into the war against Trump..whatever that may be.   Burgis writes: First, hysteria serves no one. And it certainly doesn't serve a long-term project like patiently rebuilding the workers' movement and constituting the kind of Left that could actually contest for power in as deeply anti-socialist a country as the United States. Second, the implicit logic of fascism analogies in intra-left discourse is nearly always to encourage leftists to put aside our battles with the neoliberal center over economic questions in favor of a procedural defense of democracy against what's postulated as an urgent common threat. This amounts to telling socialists to endorse pretty much the same “build the broadest possible front around the most minimal possible basis of agreement” strategy that Democrats and Never Trump Republicans have been doggedly pursuing since Trump first came down the escalator in 2015. The abject failure of the Harris campaign to lean into an economically populist message is precisely what led to an unprecedented level of working-class support for the “fascist” Trump. Endlessly relitigating January 6th and constantly reminding voters of how sensible people across the political spectrum were supporting Harris (everyone, as she and her surrogates often said, “from Bernie Sanders to Dick Cheney”) simply didn't move ordinary Americans.    So join us today as we engage in what I think will be an interesting conversation. Read Ben's article in Damage Magazine here: https://damagemag.com/2024/07/30/left-identitarianism-is-also-a-mirror-world/   Diaganolists, Doppelgangers, and Left Liberal Identitarians: A Review of the New Naomi Klein Book Doppelganger ---   The concept of a doppelganger is often reserved for the realm of science fiction and noir thrillers, but in politics, the idea of a doppelganger holds its own peculiar intrigue. Here at This is Revolution, we've encountered our own version of a doppelganger—a show that shares some surface-level similarities, like having Black men and the word "Revolution" in its title. However, upon closer inspection, these similarities begin and end with the name.   Over the years, I've noticed people confusing the two shows, likely because the other show began with a completely different name and was eventually forced to change it. If you're really paying attention, you'd see that the radical rhetoric they espouse is more of a theatrical performance, wrapped in a contrarian nature and a penchant for identity politics.   Ben Burgis, in his recent piece for Damage Magazine titled "Left Identitarianism is also a Mirror World," addresses this phenomenon. He describes a political “diagonalism” that superficially mirrors the Left but aligns with drastically different political priorities. This doppelganger of the Left is a shadowy reflection—using its rhetorical notes for opposing ends.   Burgis writes about how this diagonalism is “anti-war” when it comes to Democratic actions in Ukraine but reveres Trump despite his aggressive foreign policy moves. They claim to support free speech and oppose Big Tech, but not to the extent of democratizing these platforms—just reshaping them to fit their agenda, with a preference for billionaires like Elon Musk over Mark Zuckerberg.   This so-called “anti-establishment radicalism” that echoes the rhetoric of the Left is, in reality, a mirror doppelganger serving the interests of the bosses and the Republican Party. It is a critical examination of how political narratives can be co-opted, leaving behind a superficial resemblance that betrays its origins.   Let's delve into this discussion on political doppelgangers and explore how they influence public perception and political discourse.   Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Como cofundador y director ejecutivo de Fondeadora, Norman lidera un banco digital innovador que busca transformar la manera en que los mexicanos acceden a servicios financieros. Con un GMV acumulado anual de más de US$1,000 millones, su visión disruptiva ha revolucionado el panorama financiero en México. Norman profundizan en el libro "Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life" de Luke Burgis. Simon Mayo's Books Of The Year

Investigative journalist, Tom Burgis, joins Simon and Matt to discuss his fascinating new book 'Cuckooland: Where The Rich Own The Truth' They discuss the dangers involved in his job, what goes in to researching such incredible stories and why he continues to do it. Here's more info on the book: Everywhere, the powerful are making a renewed claim to the greatest prize of all: to own the truth. The power to choose what you want reality to be and impose that reality on the world. For three years, Tom Burgis followed a lead that took him deeper and deeper into Cuckooland – the place where the rich own the truth. The trail snaked from the Kremlin to Kathmandu, Stockholm to the Steppe, from a blood-soaked town square in Uzbekistan to a royal retreat in Scotland. Burgis hunted down oligarchs, developed secret sources and traced vast sums of money flowing between multinational corporations, ex-Soviet dictators and the west's ruling elites. And he found one man who wanted the power to bend reality to his will. This book tells an astonishing story: a tale of secrets and lies that reveals how fragile that truth can be. Whether it's in Kazakh torture chambers or the UK's High Court, the lords of Cuckooland are seizing control of the truth. They decree what stories may be told about war and money and power, what we are permitted to know – and more importantly, what we are not. From the bestselling author of Kleptopia, Cuckooland is a deeply reported work of non-fiction that reads like a thriller. It is a story of how globalisation and technological revolution have combined to imperil the foundation of free societies: that the truth belongs to the many, not the few. Wärme liegt ihm also im Blut. Rene Girard was a Stanford professor and polymath who was well known for pioneering the idea of memetic desire. He believed that human desire occurs through observant mimicry. Like an infant learning by watching her parents, we imitate others who have what we value. We CopyLuke Burgis, Author of the book Wanting, gets very clear when he says,Basic survival, sustenance, sex, warmth: these are all instinctual needs for which we have biological mechanisms to help guide us.A desire, on the other hand, is an object we pursue for which there is no purely instinctual basis. We don't have a built-in mechanism to guide us towards wanting one thing over another. But models can. Models are people who show us what is worth wanting.”We copy others, and for a good reason. We perceive that they are farther ahead on the journey and appear to have the answer. Stated plainly, Mimetic desire means we make our choices according to the behaviors of others. Don't believe me? Check out this commercial for Lincoln and one of my favorite actors, Matthew McConaughey. Well, I think he has sold a few Lincolns. By the way, I drive one, so there's that.Do you still need convincing? This scene in Casino Royale brings me immense joy. I watch it with a smile every time. Bond is engaged in another high-stakes poker game. Naturally, the fate of the free world rides on the outcome. Enjoy!Room For Finding? What happens when we find space to exist without the influence of others? Someone very famous didn't have a choice - Beethoven. As he aged, he lost his hearing. His best work was when he was nearly deaf. Coincidence, I don't think so. Here is how Arthur Brooks describes it,"It seems counterintuitive, to say the least, that Beethoven became more original and brilliant as a composer in inverse proportion to his ability to hear his own—and others'—music. But maybe it isn't so surprising. As his hearing deteriorated, he was less influenced by the prevailing compositional fashions and more by the music forming inside his head."Don't CompeteBeethoven's loss of hearing took away his ability to compete. While I'm sure he didn't view it as a gift at the time, his loss of hearing removed the competition. He had no choice but to lean into ‘his world.' When we compete with others, we copy them. We are chasing what they have or what they are doing. That's not healthy for us as humans or organizations. More importantly, it won't result in the best version of the world. It will just mean more copies - more of the same. This is something to consider as you create yourself, your product, or your community. How are you being influenced by those around you? Are you able to find the space to be you? Or are you worrying and copying what others are doing or what they have? There is only one you in the world - how can you leverage, lean in, and love that gift? Take Aways:We look to others to tell us what we should desire. That's okay, be aware. When we compete, we are copying. Make space to be you. There is no one else like you, be you. The competition is in the mirror. One final thought, happiness is the absence of desire. I am still trying to tame my desires, but I am a little wiser influence. I'll leave you with this quote from Lao Tzu,"Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize nothing is lacking, the whole world belongs to you."References:Casino Royale. Directed by Martin Campbell. Performances by Daniel Craig. Tom Burgis is an award-winning investigative reporter focused on domestic and international financial crime and corruption. He has exposed major corruption scandals, covered terrorist attacks, coups and forgotten conflicts, and traced dirty money from the Kremlin to Washington.  His first book, The Looting Machine, was published in 2015. It revealed how the exploitation of Africa's vast natural resources condemns the continent to corruption, conflict and poverty. The New York Times called it a ‘brave, defiant book'. It won the Overseas Press Club of America's award for the year's best book on international affairs. Kleptopia: How dirty money is conquering the world, his second book, was published in September 2020. It exposes the hidden connections that link a massacre on the Kazakh steppe and a stolen election in Zimbabwe to the City of London and, ultimately, the White House. Burgis reveals how the world's kleptocrats – those who rule through corruption – are uniting and threaten to overwhelm democracy. https://twitter.com/tomburgis  https://tomburgis.com/  How London became the dirty money capital of the world - https://www.ft.com/video/d3bafb94-9dbd-4c1e-8016-8cd8331960f1  Order Kleptopia - https://amzn.to/3ONalwm  You can listen to the show on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5AYWZh12d92D4PDASG4McB?si=5835f2cf172d47cd&nd=1  Apple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/chatter/id1273192590  Google Podcasts - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5wb2RpYW50LmNvL2NoYXR0ZXIvcnNzLnhtbA  And all major podcast platforms.  Watch Us On Odysee.com - https://odysee.com/$/invite/@TheJist:4   Sign up and watch videos to earn crypto-currency!  Buy Brexit: The Establishment Civil War - https://amzn.to/39XXVjq  Mailing List - https://www.getrevue.co/profile/thejist  Twitter - https://twitter.com/Give_Me_TheJist  Website - https://thejist.co.uk/  Music from Just Jim – https://soundcloud.com/justjim

Most recently, he had awesome leftist historian HARVEY J KAYE as his main guest, whom I love and would love to have on Breadsheet sometime to talk Thomas Paine, because he's the only person I know of who talks up T-Paine as much as I do. Oooh, maybe he could do a thing where it doubles as something I could use with my students. Also go to www.hoss.fun for ALL YOUR HOSS NEEDS. Howdy from Hoss. AND Ben Burgis. This is Ben's THIRD Breadsheet appearance (check out episodes 5,6, and 20 for his previous installments), and boy howdy, is it a sexy one. We mostly talk about Dave Chappelle's new special—not exactly attacking or defending it, moreso analyzing the reaction to it. Very necessary disclaimer: we are but two cisgender hetero dude bros… hell, we're not even comedians, unless you consider my “music” “comedic.” So our opinions are definitely skewed by our identities, privilege, etc—as anyone's is, really— and of course it's maybe a little “cringe,” as the kids say, to opine on the issue of trans acceptance and Chappelle's shitty attitude without the input of a trans person. Which leads me to my next point: I also ask Mr. Burgis about something kinda niche—his fairly negative interactions with a lovely wildcard leftist streamer named ANDREA ROVENSKI. As he acknowledges, Ben may come off as a pinch condescending when talking about Andrea in this episode, but I think he makes some good points and he even expresses some nuance—namely that he was at least A LITTLE wrong about his interpretation and analysis of the January 6 Capitol Riots, which was the crux of he and Ms. Rovenski's little feud. Anyway, let's heal this divide, people. We need more love on the left. Ol' Benny Burgz and Andrea would have a great discussion if they spoke, I think, so let's all come together and be friends. Anyway, also, Andrea, please come on Breadsheet and give me your perspective on the Chappelle special and also let's make fun of Jackson Hinkle, a dumb dumb whom you just debated. Okay this is way too long of a description. Dave Chappelle's special was kinda lazy and boring and ignorant in my opinion, and I'm not sure I express that well in this interview. I'm a people pleaser so I'm bad at expressing disagreement with my guests. I'm also kinda gullible, which is why they call me the JOE ROGAN OF THE LEFT. Also buy his books GIVE THEM AN ARGUMENT and CANCELING COMEDIANS WHILE THE WORLD BURNS, both published by Zero Books. Can't wait for that Christopher Hitchens book too!! In this week's podcast, we meet with Luke Burgis, the Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Director of Programs at the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship at The Catholic University of America. In his most recent book, “Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life,” he unpacks the influences that form our desires. Inspired by the work of Rene Girard, Burgis connects the dots between the models of desire that we see in our daily lives and the desires that grow in our own hearts. When we see a desire modeled by neighbors or coworkers or celebrities, we naturally, and often subconsciously, imitate and assimilate them as our own. In our modern society of 24/7 connectivity, we are under the siege of “influencers” from social media, and our moral imagination seems doomed to constantly be in “assimilate and imitate” mode. Burgis calls these desires “thin desires” because they lack the deep, substantive roots in our true personal desires. Instead, we need the wisdom to turn off the barrage of desire-modelling so that we can tap into the true desires that God has placed on our hearts for the true purpose of our lives. It's important to understand the way mimetic desires work on our hearts, because they can lead us down very different paths in our lives. If we're inattentive to its powerful gravitational pull, we run the risk of imitating the same desires of anyone and everyone in our lives, from wayward celebrities in our newsfeeds to well-heeled neighbors and their fancy new cars, vacations, or jobs. This is how we end up sidetracked down the roads of rivalry and envy. If we're all vying for the same status, appearance, and trophies, it's no wonder we tend to bear ill will towards those who seem to be more successful their pursuits. Chasing the lifestyles and desires of others won't ultimately satisfy us. We need to silence the mimetic noise, the clanging, chaotic call to chase the same fleet-footed white rabbit. Turn off the TV. Sign out of social media. Stop peeking over your neighbor's fence. “The idea of a personal vocation is the antidote to mimetic desire. To paraphrase the words of JPII, ‘Everybody has a deep desire to become who they are. Become who you are. Become who you were created to be.' If you don't have a good idea of your personal vocation, you're very susceptible to latching onto thin, highly mimetic desires. Everything looks like a shiny object if you're not firmly grounded in an idea of vocation.” We need to awaken to the reality of our own personal callings right in front of us. Look to your own life, your own gifts, your own heart. What is God saying to you there? What openings, what dreams, what ideas has He planted for you, and only you, to make a reality? Tune into this week's episode to hear more about how our heart's desires can be the key to unlocking our destiny within God's plan.

So much good stuff in this episode. One of our favorite people, David Griscom, returns as the main guest. The new weekly philosophy segment with Jennifer Burgis debuts at the end of the episode--she weighs in on Ayn Rand's angry rant about the influence of Immanuel Kant. But here's the bad news: We're spending almost the entire episode watching and discussing Prager University videos. CMoney Burns interviews Ben Burgis: philosophy professor, host of "Give them an Argument" podcast, and author of "Canceling Comedians while the World Burns: a Critique of the Contemporary Left." In the interview, Burgis explains key ideas from his recent book, including how the phenomena that the Right has dubbed "Cancel Culture" might not be the best use of time and energy on the Left, but that it comes from a place of frustration, lack of policy wins, and a desire to see at least some results from activity on the Left. Burgis uses the example of Bernie's recent interview with Maureen Dowd of the NYT, in which Bernie demanded that the interview stay focused on policy proposals that Senator Sanders was trying to include in legislation in the Senate rather than cultural 'distractions' like the #FreeBritneySpears controversy, to demonstrate what discipline on the Left looks like. Also mentioned in the interview: Stalin's recent rise to "trending" status on Twitter and how Burgis doesn't think trotting out Stalin is the best way to convince new people to join the Left. Burgis writes for Jacobin in addition to his recent book on Cancel Culture. You can find him on Twitter @BenBurgis and his book is available wherever you get your books. Investigating the Thought-Provoking Concept of Mimetic Desire with Luke Burgis

Luke Burgis is an entrepreneur by experience who worked on Wall Street for a short time before moving to California to jump into the startup world in Silicon Valley. He established four companies and experienced many successes and failures while in California. From the outside, Burgis appeared to have everything. However, he felt he was on a never-ending journey to find “something” while not really understanding what that something was. Click on play to learn: How the influences of René Girard and mimetic desire redirected Burgis' life path. What drives people to pursue systems of desire. How to juggle competing multiple tribes. How the concept of tribes may play a role in blaming others. As a successful entrepreneur, Burgis struggled with wanting one thing one day and wanting something else the next day. Dealing with conflicting wants on an ongoing basis led to Burgis stepping back to revaluate his life. As an avid reader, he studied various theories of want and the self and found a connection with René Girard's ideas on the concept of mimetic desires and what drives them. His research led him to spending three years in Italy in the quest to identify the driving forces of his life. As a student of psychology, classical philosophy, and theology, he learned to create distance to examine his true desires and distinguish the origins of his aspirations. Burgis learned how to identify various systems of desire and realized that people move in and out of those systems as their life changes over time. He wrote a book, Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life that explores why we want what we want. This profound book shows readers how mimetic desire is present in their relationships. One of the chapters focuses on the rise of scapegoating and resulting violence that demonstrates how understanding the power of mimetic desire psychology can keep us from becoming involved in the negative behaviours of blaming others.
