The town of Weimar looms large in German history. This ancient town nestled in the heart of the country was home to some of Europe's greatest thinkers, Goethe and Schiller, Liszt and Nietzsche among them. It gave its name to the ambitious Weimar Republic crafted in the aftermath of the First World War. But it was also where fascism took hold. Where Bauhaus architects first experimented with new ways of living, Buchenwald was dug out of a beech forest. German-British historian Katya Hoyer has drawn on a wealth of new archival research to tell the story of Weimar through the lives of some of its citizens from the years 1919-1939.  In this episode, she talks to historian Sophie Scott-Brown about some of these vividly drawn characters who, as the events of history swept them up, became witnesses, perpetrators, victims and bystanders. How did Germany, within a few years, turn from one of the most liberal democracies in the world to a genocidal dictatorship? What choices did individual Germans make that enabled this? Blessing is a major theme in Scripture, appearing over 500 times. The Hebrew barak and Greek makarios point beyond material wealth to a life flourishing in God's will. God's desire to bless is ultimately revealed in Jesus Christ, who breaks every curse. In Deuteronomy 28, obedience brings blessing and disobedience brings hardship, as seen in Israel's exile. Yet hope remains: Isaiah 40–66 promises restoration, pointing to the Messiah and a new era of righteousness— “the year of the Lord's favour” (Isaiah 61:2), calling people from captivity to expectation.1. Move Past Your Past Into a New Future (Isaiah 62:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17)“Pass through the gates” calls for a decisive break from the past and a step into God's promises. Like Abraham and the disciples, following God means leaving the old behind. In Christ, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), so stepping into blessing requires releasing past regrets and embracing a renewed mindset—looking forward with faith and openness to growth.2. Prepare for What's Ahead (Isaiah 62:10; Isaiah 40:3–4)“Prepare the way” points to inner transformation: the low are lifted, the proud humbled, and the broken restored. God uses seasons of preparation—often through waiting—to shape character and readiness, as seen in Joseph's life. These seasons are purposeful, not wasted.3. Focus on What Needs Building Up (Isaiah 62:10)“Build up the highway” calls for intentional growth—deepening faith through prayer and Scripture, strengthening families, stewarding resources wisely, and investing in community. Both personal and shared spiritual growth create a pathway for greater impact.4. Remove Obstacles to Blessing (Isaiah 62:10; Ephesians 4:22–24, 31)“Remove the stones” means addressing what hinders growth—unforgiveness, sin, and harmful influences. Scripture calls us to put off the old self and embrace the new, clearing the way for freedom and God's work to flow.5. Engage in God's Big-Picture Mission (Isaiah 62:10–11; Acts 1:8)“Raise a banner for the nations” shifts focus from personal blessing to global purpose. God's people are called to share the message of Christ, carrying hope to others. Blessing is meant to overflow into mission.Conclusion: Taking Hold of New BlessingsIsaiah 62:10 outlines a clear pathway into God's blessing: move forward from the past, prepare the heart, build what matters, remove obstacles, and embrace God's mission. God desires to work both in and through His people, leading them into greater purpose and fruitfulness. Stepping into these blessings requires intentional decisions and faith, trusting that God's plans are good and that He is leading into a future marked by growth, impact, and His favour. 

Jesus Followers Reach Out to God When Fear and Anxiety Seek to Take Hold of Life Because They Have a Personal Relationship with the Universe's Creator MESSAGE SUMMARY: Your problems are not too big for God because God is faithful and Sovereign. Your financial issues, your debt, your health issues, and your sins are not too big for God. God is faithful, and He is trustworthy. Why not take, to God, all those things in your life that are creating your anxiety? In Psalms 9:9-10, the Psalmist encourages you to put your trust in God: “The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.". Also, Jesus tells us, in Mathew. 6:33-34, that you can put our trust in Him and not be anxious about your problems: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”. Our God is a faithful God – reach out to God when fear and anxiety are taking a firm hold on your life.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. Some thoughts pass through your mind and disappear quickly. But some thoughts don't. They linger. They repeat. They feel convincing. They feel like the truth. And no matter how many times you try to move past them, they seem to pull you back in. In this episode, we're talking about what we call sticky thoughts. These are the thoughts the mind becomes attached to. The ones that feel heavy, personal, and hard to let go of. When the mind fuses with a thought, it stops feeling like a thought and starts feeling like reality. And when that happens, that thought begins to shape your emotions, your behavior, and the choices you make. Inside this episode, I walk you through: What sticky thoughts are and why some thoughts grip the mind more than others What it means for the mind to become fused with a thought Why sticky thoughts often attach to themes like self worth, success, relationships, or safety How repetition and emotional charge make certain thoughts feel true Why sticky thoughts are not defined by their content, but by your relationship to them How learning to see a thought as a thought creates space and choice Why the goal is not to get rid of sticky thoughts, but to change how you relate to them When you learn to step back and observe a thought instead of automatically believing it, something important happens. You create space. But by Exodus 17, He allows them to fight. If you are facing a battle, frame it this way: God trusts you with this fight. He intends to forge something in you through it.You Are in a War While our biggest battles are often internal, we also face external opposition. The enemy attacks when we are weary and vulnerable. We must fight with spiritual weapons.Take Hold of Something Physical Moses held up the staff of God—a physical reminder of God's past faithfulness. When you cannot see the future, take hold of something tangible that reminds you of God's faithfulness (a journal, a photo, or Communion).Take Hold of Someone Moses grew tired and could not win alone. Aaron and Hur held his hands up. You need "war buddies"—people who won't just talk about the problem, but will pray the solution. This shouldn't just be your spouse, as they are often fighting the exact same battle.ConclusionThe name Joshua means "The Lord is Salvation"—the same name as Jesus. Exodus 17 is prophetic. Jesus Followers Reach Out to God When Fear and Anxiety Seek to Take Hold of Life Because They Have a Personal Relationship with the Universe's Creator MESSAGE SUMMARY: Your problems are not too big for God because God is faithful and Sovereign. Your financial issues, your debt, your health issues, and your sins are not too big for God. God is faithful, and He is trustworthy. Why not take, to God, all those things in your life that are creating your anxiety? In Psalms 9:9-10, the Psalmist encourages you to put your trust in God: “The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.". Also, Jesus tells us, in Mathew. 6:33-34, that you can put our trust in Him and not be anxious about your problems: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”.
