Logic, the study of how certain arguments either succeed or fail to support their conclusions, is one of the most important topics in philosophy, its importance illustrated by the common assumption that if one is being logical, they are probably right. However, the importance of logic has led to a certain amount of misuse and abuse over the years, with questionable arguments being given a veneer of reasonableness to cover up some questionable philosophical mechanics. In a way this is nothing new; since the beginning of philosophy there has been an ongoing tension between true philosophers and sophists. The form this sophistry takes is often a reflection of the particular political and cultural questions that are being debated, and so any attempt to make sense of one's times and build any sort of popular consensus will require diving into the pseudologic and deconstructing it, hopefully with a better argument in its place. This is the project of Ben Burgis in his book Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left (Zero Books, 2019). Both a professor of philosophy and a committed political leftist, Burgis wades through a host of contemporary examples, arguing that the common arguments for capitalism and against socialism often rely on questionable logic that can be debated. On top of this, he argues that the left needs to learn to better integrate logical thinking into its own analysis, and communicate its ideas in ways that not only maintain their rigor, but offer clarity to a wider swathe of people. Ben Burgis is a philosophy instructor at Georgia State University Perimeter College. His writing has appeared in a number of outlets including Jacobin, Areo and Quillette. -What is the notion of “black exceptionalism” and how does it get in the way of producing adequate theories of not only black liberation but the liberation of all? -What is the “racial ‘we’” and how is it deployed to reproduce models of black exceptionalism? -What kind of politics do we need to finish the struggles of the Reconstruction era to the present?

In the B-Side that follows, available for patrons of DPS, we discuss the New Deal — was it racist and do universal policies serve to reproduce racial inequities? Lastly, what should socialists make of the ADOS and Reparations movements?

Jane Slaughter of Labor Notes had this to say about the book:
“An astute analysis of power relations not only in the sphere of reproduction but also in the worlds of work, immigration, and government policy as they bear on women's ability to control their bodies. She illuminates the historical context of the writings of Marx and Malthus, the crusades of Comstock, and recurring elite pleas for women to supply more workers and soldiers. Brown lays bare why U.S. women who want to be mothers, and those who don't, have it far worse here than in Europe. Then she tells us how to change that.”

Joining me this week is Matt Bruenig, who writes on the politics and policy of welfare programs. I talk with Matt about his newly launched, crowd-funded, left-wing thinktank, as well as what kind of policies we need to shore up our welfare state in order to help folks who need it the most. We discuss the racial wealth gap, reparations vs. universal social programs, Universal Basic Income, child poverty alleviation, and the overhaul necessary to reboot our welfare state for the 21st century. Tune in and learn about Matt's thinktank and how you can support this important project. ------------------------------------ As always, you can follow the Dead Pundits Society on twitter @DeadPundits Subscribe on Soundcloud and/or iTunes. Joining me this week to talk about how the labor movement can fight and win collective action is labor organizer extraordinaire, Jane McAlevey. We talk about how to build real power in order to reverse the bad fortune of labor in the United States and beyond. When the workers go out on strike together, they still win. Jane tells us how.
