  Another stellar guest mix comes our way courtesy of loyal listener, Erwin Broers. He asked if I was interested in a mix of  electronic music from Innovative Communication, the label founded by Klaus Schulze in the late 70s. Yes, please! Here's what Erwin says about this fantastic mix: "I was in my teens when I got in touch with Electronic Music by means of well-known artists such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and Vangelis. Searching for more similar music in the local library, I came across an LP with on its sleeve just a mysterious picture of a huge radio telescope. The album was Robert Schroeder's "Galaxie Cygnus-A" ! Liner notes on the back of the sleeve explained that the music was commissioned by the Austrian Broadcasting Service (ÖRF) and performed live at the 1982 ARS Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. The idea behind the project consisted of capturing sound waves coming from the Cygnus-A galaxy with the help of the Effelsberg 100 meter radio telescope, the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world at that time. Schroeder used those sound waves as basis and inspiration, and created a magical soundtrack for stargazing and floating in outer space. Needless to say, I was blown away by this album, and from then on I fanatically sought out other releases on the Innovative Communication label, which - by the way - was founded in 1978 by the late Klaus Schulze, one of the godfathers of Electronic Music. To honour my memory of that exciting period, I chose to start this label retrospective with the first two tracks of this special album - including some of the white noise straight from space ! The mix is rather heterogeneous and gives a good impression of the kind of EM that was published on IC in its heydays, ie. the 80s. From the early 90s the label quickly became more commercial edging towards mellow new age and average electro-acoustic instrumental fusion (aka NAM)." Thanks, Erwin, for this trip back in time. Omar holds an MFA in Design and BFA in Graphic Design. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor at VCUarts in Qatar, and an artist in residence at Doha Fire Station program in Qatar. Her work has been showcased in Egypt, Qatar, San Francisco, Austria, Bulgaria, Dubai, and Berlin. “3arabizi keyboard” project was given an honorary mention at the STARTS Prize – Grand prize of the European Commission honoring Innovation in Technology, Industry, and Society Stimulated by the Arts (2017), Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. Er ist der künstlerische Leiter des VRHAM! - des internationalen Virtual Reality Festival in Hamburg. Seit 2018 findet es in der HafenCity statt, wo sich Stände und Besucher aneinanderreihen und gemeinsam in die Welt der VR eintauchen. In diesem Jahr musste das Festival wegen der Corona-Pandemie komplett online stattfinden. In 2012, the same year that CERN discovered the Higgs boson, another experiment was underway that crossed more than just scientific frontiers: Arts@CERN. Since 2011, when the first Collide residency awards were announced at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, there had not only been engineered collisions between protons at CERN, but also orchestrated collisions between artists and scientists. So what does a curator add to a highly scientific and technological environment? Why are they necessary to make creative collisions happen and matter? These and many more questions will be answered in this Friday lunchtime lecture by Ariane Koek, founder of Arts@CERN, who initiated, created and designed this extensive multi-stranded international arts programme.

Die SpielerInnen können auf diese Weise die Bilder als Erinnerungsfetzen in der dreidimensionalen Umgebung des Spiels erfahren und metaphorisch das Gedächtnis des Künstlers begehen. In der Arbeit »Bad Trip« treffen sich aktuelle Themen, die unter dem Schlagwort der Selbstvermessung (Lifelogging / Quantified Self) nicht zuletzt durch die bevorstehende Markteinführung des tragbaren Computers in Brillenform − »Google Glass« − höchste Relevanz und Aktualität besitzen. Während dem Vortrag, wird der junge Künstler aus Hong Kong über seine Arbeit »Bad Trip«, die auch in der Ausstellung »ZKM_Gameplay« zum Ausprobieren bereit steht, sprechen. Alan Kwan (*1990) ist ein Medienkünstler und Filmemacher aus Hong Kong. Bei seiner Arbeit konzentriert er sich auf die Erstellung und Gestaltung von neuen Technologien und interaktiven Erlebnissen für das Kino der Zukunft. Seine Arbeiten wurden bei dem Ars Electronica Festival (Österreich), im ZKM (Deutschland), bei dem 404 Festival (Argentinien), bei dem Vector Game Art Festival (Kanada) sowie der Games of Art Ausstellung (Australien) ausgestellt, und auch bei Formaten wie u.a. Discovery Channel, WIRED, Popular Science und Boston Globe vorgestellt. Alan Kwan begann bereits mit 9 Jahren Kurzfilme zu drehen und zählt zu jenen Filmemachern, deren Filme ausgezeichnet und auf Filmfestivals wie dem International Video Art Festival in Camagüey (Kuba), dem Hong Kong International Film Festival und dem Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards (ifva) präsentiert wurden. Ende 2011 wurde er eingeladen am Asian Producer's Lab während des International Fantastic Film Festival in Korea teilzunehmen. Ich war beim diesjährigen Ars Electronica Festival in Linz vor Ort und habe die beeindruckende Live-Performance “Memories of Now – Spirit of the Positron” der österreichischen Comic-Künstlerin Michaela Konrad – in Koproduktion mit dem rumänischen Multi-Media-Künstler Daniel Dorobantu – besucht. Nach der Vorführung der Video-Installation gaben beide Künstler spannende Eindrücke über ihre Arbeit preis. Die Video-Installation, die in diesem Radiobeitrag näher vorgestellt wird, wird bis Ende 2012 in der Ars Electronica in Linz zu sehen sein.
