Why Did Nick Reiner's Trustee Quit After Four Months?

In this Nick Reiner case update, we follow the strangest thread in the entire trust fight: the man who was handed control of the money — and walked away months later.Paul Kanin took over Nick Reiner's trust after Rob and Michele Reiner were killed. According to the petition, his tenure was a wall of refusals, what Nick's lawyers call "a shifting series of excuses and justifications" — concerns about Nick's competence, questions about how the money would be used, and the looming possibility that California's slayer statute could bar the payout entirely if Nick is convicted of his parents' killings, charges he denies. Then Kanin reportedly told Nick's representatives something remarkable: he was resigning. A fiduciary named Jodi Montgomery — best known as Britney Spears' former conservator — is taking over.Defense attorney and former felony prosecutor Eric Faddis reads the resignation the way an investigator reads a crime scene: what does it tell you when the person holding the purse strings would rather hand off the fight than finish it? Faddis weighs Kanin's stated concern — Nick's "capacity to make sound decisions and adequately protect his own interests" — against the defense's counterpunch that no court has ever found Nick incompetent, and explains how much a trustee's personal judgment actually counts for in probate court. He also unpacks the apparent contradiction at the center of the episode: the much larger Reiner family trusts, where Nick is reportedly a full and equal beneficiary, were frozen until the criminal case ends. So why is this smaller trust even contestable? And if Jake and Romy Reiner formally oppose their brother, how ugly does the fight get — and who does ugly favor? The answer to that last one may surprise you.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? No scripts, no theory for the sake of theory. Just honest, direct responses to what you're actually going through. If you have a question you'd like answered on a future episode, send it to info@thelivingrelationship.com. Your question could be featured next month. This month's questions:   "I've been seeing this guy for about four months now and honestly everything feels really good when we're together. But we've never actually defined what we are and every time I get close to bringing it up I just... don't. I'm scared of ruining what we have. How do I know when it's actually time to say something?"     "I've always been someone who shows love by taking care of people. Cooking for them, checking in, being there no matter what. But I've had multiple people tell me that's why men walk all over me. The thing is it doesn't feel like a problem to me, it feels like love. How do I change something that feels so natural without just becoming someone I'm not?"     "My ex told me I was too much. Too emotional, too intense, too needy. And it really messed with me because I wasn't trying to be any of those things, I was just being honest about how I felt. Now I'm in something new and I'm constantly monitoring myself so I don't overwhelm him. How do I just be myself without scaring people away?"     "How do you know when you're being patient and supportive versus just making excuses for someone? I feel like I'm always giving people the benefit of the doubt and I don't know if that's a strength or if I'm just afraid to admit when something isn't working."

The kind that reaches into places we rarely visit, and reminds us of what being human actually means. This is one of those stories. For four months, Spencer Waldron and his family lived inside a hospital room. Not visited it. Not passed through it. Lived it. Day after day, night after night, in a space where time stretches, where uncertainty breathes, and where every small moment becomes everything. And somewhere inside that reality, something deeper reveals itself. Not a framework. Not a lesson. But an experience of life stripped to its essence.Today, we're not talking about endurance as a concept. We're stepping into endurance as it is lived, through relationships, through presence, through the kind of humanity that only appears when there is nowhere else to go.This is a conversation about what remains… when everything else falls away.Support the show

Pennsylvania is approaching four months without having a spending plan. The state Senate is doubling down on its effort to fund the state at last year’s levels. A consultant hired by US Steel found high-pressure water used in a maintenance procedure exceeded the valve’s pressure rating prior to a fatal explosion in August. Two workers died in the blast at the company’s Clairton Coke Works near Pittsburgh. Proposed legislation in the state Senate would ban students from using cell phones during the school day, with support for such a ban on the increase. Among those in favor is Aaron Chapin, President of the Pennsylvania State Education Association the state’s largest teacher's union. Chapin expressed his support during a recent Senate hearing. Mechanicsburg Borough Council on Tuesday addressed a troubling incident from earlier this month. During the Borough's October 14th Halloween parade business cards were discovered in bags of children's candy with the words "Women of the Ku Klux Klan." It is unclear how many cards were distributed. Commonwealth Court has ordered Penn State to release certain internal Board of Trustee documents, ruling the university is not totally exempt from the state's Open Records law Gov. Josh Shapiro's memoir is coming out in late January. It touches on his political rise and the trauma of his home being set on fire. HarperCollins announced Tuesday that "Where We Keep the Light: Stories From a Life of Service" will be released Jan. 27. Public media's federal funding has been revoked. Federal government shuts down, as state budget impasse enters four months. And impacts of Planned Parenthood losing Medicaid funds.

As Congress missed the deadline to pass a federal budget, more than 100,000 government workers in the commonwealth are now affected by the federal government shutdown. Today marks three entire months without a state budget. Pennsylvania’s counties, school districts and social service agencies are warning of mounting layoffs, borrowing costs and damage to the safety net, as the politically divided state government enters its fourth month of a budget stalemate. October 1st was also a milestone for WITF. For the first time in more than 50 years, public media is now operating without federal funding. For WITF, this moment is about our responsibility to YOU the public, across a 19-county area of central Pennsylvania. Planned Parenthood agencies nationwide can no longer bill Medicaid for providing basic medical care due to Congressional Republicans’ tax and spending law. Central Pennsylvania’s clinics say they will keep their doors open even as the cuts are reducing access to care around the country. In a 4-3 decision, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that voters who cast their ballot by mail must be notified if a ballot is rejected due to an incorrect date missing signature or similar issue. A federal judge has ruled that Pennsylvania will be shielded -- at least for now-- from losing millions of dollars in food-stamp benefits. Pope Leo XIV's First Four Months with Christopher White

It's hard to believe, but Pope Leo XIV just passed the four-month mark of his papacy. That's more than a full season. After the incredible amount of press coverage here in North America reacting in shock to the election of a pope originally from Chicago, the media frenzy quieted quickly and starkly. It's fair to say Pope Leo doesn't have a big, splashy personality, and add to that all the wild political headlines in the months since his election, it's not surprising that Pope Leo has receded from the spotlight a bit. That's probably a good thing; celebrity culture and Catholic culture don't go all that well together anyway. But Pope Leo has certainly been busy despite fading from the headlines, filling his days with meetings and setting about the work of governing the church. At this point in his papacy, we thought it was worthwhile to check in on these four months, and today's guest is among the most qualified people on the planet to talk about it. Christopher White is the associate director for strategic initiatives and senior fellow of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University, and he's also the author of the recent book “Pope Leo XIV: Inside the Conclave and the Dawn of a New Papacy,” published by Loyola Press. Before Chris started his job at Georgetown this past summer, he spent four years as the Vatican correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. He lived in Rome and spent his days meeting with Vatican sources and attending big papal events. He visited more than 20 countries with Pope Francis as part of the press corps. He is one of most astute and thoughtful church observers and commentators. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Chris about these first months of Leo's papacy and what we might want to be looking out for in the months ahead. We also talked about life as a Vatican reporter and what it's like to cover an institution that is also your own spiritual home. We think you'll learn a lot from Chris about Pope Leo's priorities and how the institutional Church operates. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Hey guys, I have been working for four months at my job and I already don't like it. This is my first job out of college and I work as a C# backend engineer for a small B2B SaaS company. I really think this company is a dead end. There is a lot of technical debt and antipatterns and we have no automated testing whatsoever. Most of our time is spent manually debugging but no one wants to refactor. I'm already thinking about working somewhere else. However, it took me a while to get this job, and I don't think the market has gotten any better since. I'm trying to decide whether I should focus on applying to jobs again or if I should work on a bunch of side projects and open source to stand out better. On one hand, I can learn new technologies on my own to make me stand out for my next job, but on the other hand, I feel like as long as I stay at this company I am wasting time, since I'm not learning from my job. I want to switch to more distributed backend engineering in Java anyways, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Listener Ghani asks, “I'm a mid-level software engineer who has trouble communicating with my engineering manager and product manager when there is unclear or missing information about an assignment/story/project. They answer with hostile/dismissive tone/non-answer (e.g it's on the jira-card, epic, etc). They course correct when they have the information later, harshly my impressions were they don't have the information at the time they expect engineers to make decision they expect engineers to know something they don't (e.g architecture, infrastructure, past decision, plans, etc) I really want to look for where we can have a safe exchange of information. How can I do this?
