Like most ski bums, legendary photographer Lee Cohen was only planning on skiing at Alta, Utah, for one season. Forty years later, he’s still there, shooting skiers in the Wasatch. Since his first image was published in the late ’80s in Powder, he continues to be one of the top shooters in the game. One of his favorite subjects is his son, Sam, himself a professional freeskier. It hasn’t always been easy for either of them: Sam admits he had to ski hard to get beyond the old man’s shadow. While their vocation is different, the canvas on which they ply that craft is the same. And they’re tight. If you didn’t know any better, they sound more like brothers than father and son. A 22-year veteran avalanche forecaster for the Utah Avalanche Center, Drew Hardesty doesn’t simply give the avalanche forecast for the greater Wasatch. He tells the snowpack’s story. He’s part scientist, part philosopher. Part skier, part poet. What other forecaster might relate a scene from Cormac McCarthy’s book The Crossing to a blown avalanche forecast? How many snow scientists were Naval Intelligence officers during Desert Storm or have received a federal Valor Award for aiding 17 lightning strike victims on the Grand Teton? Drew’s life experiences allow him to see the snow through different eyes. This episode of the Backcountry Podcast is sponsored by 10 Barrel Brewing Co. Growing up and still today, we probably come across the saying, “listen more than you talk; that is why you have two ears and one mouth.” What about when what you are listening to is your own self-defeating thoughts? Self-doubt, questioning your self-worth, wondering if you are enough – can stop you dead in your tracks! We can get incredibly attached to what we perceive to be our identity and when we are stripped down, what are the thoughts that go through our heads? How do we combat that? Hit Pause! Step back and breath! Self-assess and create that self-awareness! Maybe just stop listening to yourself and start talking to yourself! These are the topics we dive into tonight during the episode. Don’t worry though, we have some laughs and a potential misunderstanding of what it means to be “sitting in the bathroom” during recording
Jackie and Jim talk about the importance of sticking to your brand story in all efforts, how to create amazing and good-for-the-earth merchandise, and learn about the make up of a brewery's marketing team with 3-time Crushie winner 10 Barrel Brewing Co's merchandise manager, Emily Koziel.
Jesse Russell, a "tiny home developer" in Bend, Oregon, and I discuss how efficiency and minimalism can go hand in hand when it comes to designing a space to live. Find out how many of the good ideas out there about smaller living are actually illegal and how Jesse was able to work within the system to create a one-of-a-kind community with shared interests and values. Fact: Smaller homes can help us reduce waste and embodied emissions while creating a space that encourages home-ownership and outdoor adventure! Episode Sponsor - www.sustainablehomesofthefuture.comContact Host - info@shfbuild.com About Jesse:Jesse Russell grew up in Bend, OR and after spending some time working in the TV industry in Los Angeles and New York, he decided to sell most of his possessions, return to Bend, and focus on building a tiny house. Hiatus Homes started as Tongue and Groove Tiny Homes in 2015 when Jesse built the first “Hiatus” as a tiny home on wheels in a friend’s backyard. After participating in the Bend Design Conference, they had the dream to build an innovative community focused on small home design. Leading up to the launch of Hiatus Homes, the team at Tongue and Groove experimented with building tiny taverns on wheels, including two mini pubs for 10 Barrel Brewing Co. and a food truck and tavern for Brasada Ranch. After 3 years of hard work with the city, Jesse was the first to use the new cottage code which made the development of the first Hiatus Homes community project possible. A dream realized. It’s not like we need an excuse to drink delicious beer, but this is a special episode that gives us an excuse to drink delicious beer - because we had the Brewmaster from 10 Barrel Brewing Co Benny Shirley. He educated us on his rise to power at the brewery, and gave insider tidbits on 2 of his tasty brews, Cali Love - the long time running champion IPA of 10 Barrel’s taproom, and Chela Vida - a Mexican style lager that was made and ready for long sessions on the beach. But no episode would be complete without mentioning Oscar Isaac’s Beard. Seriously, it’s so majestic you have to give it royal treatment. It’s also an excuse to chat a little about the hotly anticipated Dune trailer, and segue into another movie that stars The Beard: Ex Machina. This so-ahead-of-its-time sci-fi flick was the perfect excuse to really dive into Alex Garland’s masterpiece, and marvel at the power that rests within Oscar Isaac’s Beard. Grab a coldie, and lets get to it!
This week Gordon sat down with Justin and Brian owners of Hop and Barrel Brewing Co in Hudson, WI. Talking about the origins fo the brewery and how thigns have changed in the last 4 years since opening the doors.

We once again have the pleasure of being invited to another brewery, and this one is BRAND NEW! Opening for offsale for the first time about a week before we invade their space, John and Sean open their doors to us so we can sit down, find out a bit more about who they are, and sample and discuss some of the beers they have on tap! We chat about the Honey Blonde Bombshell Blonde Ale, the Session One Amber Ale, the Squeeze Play Wheat IPA, the Indies 4 Brown Ale, and their Sugarfoot Jr. Vanilla Oatmeal Stout. Come have some laughs as we make fun of ourselves, and happily lap up these brews!
