#764 - Bhi Bhiman The Bhi Bhiman Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Now that we've made sure that you're here, I'd like to introduce this interview Paul E. Leslie did with Bhi Bhiman. Now, he's a singer-songwriter who got quite a lot of attention back when Paul first spun his music on the radio. One girl wrote in and said, “Now, thiiiiis is good.” Paul was delighted to do this interview with Bhi Bhiman, and looks forward to your hearing it. San Francisco, California singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman is the child of Sri Lankan immigrants. He considers himself as an entertainer first, but there is a moral to the songs he writes and sings. For the record, Paul became a fan and was in awe of Bhi Bhiman after hearing the sensational duet Bhi did with Judy Collins of the song “Hallelujah.” It may be one of the best ever. Did you know that you, can in fact, help keep The Paul Leslie Hour going? Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support and donate any amount. Okay, let's get into the interview with Bhi Bhiman.

Bhi Bhiman is a solo artist based in Los Angeles, who has collaborated with the likes of Chris Cornell, Keegan-Michael Key, Dave Eggers and Boots Riley. On his latest record, I'll Sleep When I'm Famous, Bhi balances feelings of hope and grief. It's a deeply existential album, exploring how we choose to live our lives & face our ultimate fate. But in the end, the record offers a sense of hope and peace: we can live on after tragedy, and hold on to love while we're still here.
Fresh off the release of his brand new album "I'll Sleep When I'm Famous," we had a heartfelt convo with the super talented Bhi Bhiman, discussing everything from the practical aspects of making music to baseball. At one point, we just quote the Seinfeld character Puddy. It's a great episode and long-time in the wishing.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Bhi Bhiman over Zoom audio! Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bhi Bhiman doesn't need much to ignite a fury of fascinating expressions; only the simplest of recording set-ups of guitar and vocal mics plugged into his laptop. Yet, even with such simplicity, he projects a towering voice that so urgently grabs your attention, you hang onto every word he sings. Bhiman's latest recording, Substitute Preacher 2, features a new set of mesmerizing acoustic covers in a series that follows his wildly popular 2013 EP (volume 1) of the same name. Fans will be treated to Bhiman's truly original takes on classic hits such as "My Best Friend's Girl" (The Cars), "Back In Black" (AC/DC), "Magic Carpet Ride" (Steppenwolf), "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath), and "My Way" (Frank Sinatra).Bhiman's foray into recording covers (Substitute Preacher 1) was such a hit that his rendition of "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits garnered several sync placements, including for an Apple Watch commercial starring Alice Cooper. The track further landed in a series of Xfinitycommercials. The same year Substitute Preacher 1 was released (2013), Bhiman took the stage at Carnegie Hall for a tribute show hosted by The Roots to commemorate Prince; other special guests included Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, and Chris Rock.Substitute Preacher 2 revisits his passion for devouring songs written by artists he loves. For Bhiman, it's not simply playing the piece just as the original artists' would. He approaches covers as if it's a standalone new song that he personally wrote himself. Over the course of his career, Bhiman has developed a dedicated following after the release of four acclaimed studio albums. His 2019 album, Peace of Mind, launched as a podcast, with each episode revealing a new song, political theme, and a conversation with a lauded special guest, such as author Dave Eggers. Since its release, Bhiman has worked behind the scenes on diverse projects from acoustic versions of "Faith" by Galantis x Dolly Parton and "Unwell" by Steve Aoki x Kiiara featuring Rob Thomas. He has also worked with actor Keegan-Michael Key, rapper/director Boots Riley, and late iconic musician Chris Cornell. We want to hear from you! In 2013 Bhi Bhiman released his covers EP Substitute Preacher, featuring covers of classics such as Highway To Hell, Message in a Bottle and Walk of Life. These were not the typical covers of songs you hear though, as Bhi Bhiman completely reimagined the arrangements making for a uniquely beautiful composition of each tune. Now, with a little extra time on his hands thanks to the pandemic, Bhi Bhiman has completed a new covers EP called Substitute Preacher II, and it's as wonderful as expected. This time he reworks Back In Black, My best Friend's Girl, Magic Carpet Ride, Paranoid and My Way, and it's must listen to stuff. #568 - Judy Collins The Judy Collins interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. She's the songwriters best friend. Singer, performing and recording artist Judy Collins has beautifully interpreted some of the best songs ever written. This is an interview that was originally broadcast on the radio in support of her album "Strangers Again," featuring duets with icons like Willie Nelson, Jeff Bridges, Michael McDonald, Jackson Browne, Glen Hansard, Don McLean, and rising stars like Bhi Bhiman, Ari Hest, and Thomas Dybdahl. Ladies and gentlemen, Judy Collins. The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.
"PARAAAISE THE LORD", and lots of other religious imagery from the new EP "Substitute Preacher 2" from the guitarist and singer Bhi Bhiman. He has been producing some of the most ecclectic work I have heard in a very long time. The Substitute Preacher 2 (a follow up to "Substitute Preacher") has a string of covers like you have never heard before, of Black Sabbath, The Cars, and AC/DC. He plays them in a folk style sometimes with the vocal style of Nina Simone, or a worship band at a revival. The social commentaries and experiences around them are very powerful. This guy requires a "Sit down and listen". https://soundcloud.com/bhibhiman Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Youtube | Spotify | Soundcloud If you like what we do, and enjoy these podcast episodes, please consider a donation to help pay for production costs, and advertising at our patreon page. It's almost impossible not to view everything around us — whether it’s music, books, movies, or films — in the context of the political turmoil washing over the U.S. right now. Some artists get pushed into tackling the times, and some go there by choice. This week, three kinds of response, in music, words, and more.
The Album: Sly and the Family Stone: Stand! (1969) When San Francisco’s Sylvester Stewart and his Family Stone released Stand! in the spring of the 1969, it further cemented the group’s reputation as the definitive pop act of the era, whose multiracial makeup mirrored the band’s multi-musical fluency in rock, pop, soul and funk. They captured the post-summer of love optimism of the times in songs like “Everyday People” and “You Can Make It If You Try” and though those good times wouldn’t last in the years to follow, for that brief, shining moment, Stand! thrust Sly and the Family Stone into the spotlight as avatars for a national feeling of possibility and positivity. Can it be it was all so simple then? Stand! was the pick of guest Bhi Bhiman, the singer/songwriter from Los Angeles (by way of St. Louis). Armed with an eclectic set of influences, Bhiman's dabbled in everything from songwriting with The Coup's Boots Riley to collaborating with comedian Keegan-Michael Key to releasing his most recent album, 2019's Peace of Mind, as a podcast. Together, we discuss how Stand! reflected the soon-to-be-dashed optimism of its time, how the Family Stone doesn't get enough credit for Sly's sound and ponder how Ike and Tina Turner managed to rip off "Sing a Simple Song" without catching heat. If you’re a pop musician of South Asian descent, not many like you have yet reached the toppermost of the poppermost. Some really famous ones include M.I.A., Norah Jones and Tony Kanal from No Doubt. Soundgarden lead guitarist Kim Thayil, whose folks came from India, was among the first. As a kid, acclaimed new singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman, whose family emigrated from Sri Lanka, looked to Thayil as something of a role model. Which was wise, because Thayil is one of the brightest, coolest rock musicians one could hope to meet. Now Bhiman and Thayil aren’t just mutual fans, they’re also friends. We put them together at KEXP’s studios in Seattle for a Talkhouse Music Podcast, and sure, they talked about being self-described “outsiders in rock & roll,” but they talked about a lot of other interesting things, too: their musical backstories, ruminations on the nature of pleasure and pain, the role of baseball in assimilation, their first guitars, the Chi-Lites, Nirvana’s nickname for Thayil, dealing with fans and, perhaps most important of all, the meaning of the word “epistemological.”

Social media exploded this week when Vanity Fair's cover introduced Caitlin Jenner to the world and continued a dialogue about the gender identity of the former Olympic track star Bruce Jenner. But as Laverne Cox, another trans celebrity, said, “Most trans folks don't have the privileges Caitlyn and I have now have,” and raised the issues of access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools and homes for our young people. Tonight, we hear from the new executive director of the Transgender Law Center, Kris Hayashi, about the work they are doing to make gender expression a basic right. With local musician Bhi Bhiman's May 18th of his new album Rhythm & Reason, we replay a 2013 interview RJ Lozada did live in the KPFA Studio. You can catch him at the Independent on June 27th and at this year's Stern Grove outdoor concert on August 2nd. The post Kris Hayashi with the Transgender Law Center appeared first on KPFA.

On Tongiht's show: Bhi Bhiman. Bhi Bhiman (courtesy of artist) APEX Contributor R.J. Lozada brings Bay area musician to the KPFA studios to share some of his music, and his background. From R.J.: I like Bhi Bhiman. If you don't know who he is, Bhi Bhiman is a bay area musician who sings folk and blues, not in a kind of new form either, he relies on traditional elements of the form: fingerpicking, and familiar melodic lines that can be traced back to Mississippi John Hurt… true to the roots…. but there's that twist: he's Sri Lankan, Tamil, to be exact. It's his lyrical sensibility and a very assured musicality that I am drawn to, and I also think it gets him into audiences, especially white audiences, somewhat unsure if he's real….I can somewhat imagine folks in the audience saying, “did he just sing what I thought he sung…?” But that's not entirely what Bhi is about. While my experience with him has been from this perspective, Bhi often aims to be wholly inclusive, he'll rib you, but you're still part of the family. With Host RJ. Welcome to Episode 6 of The John Kennedy X-Posure Podcast. This week you can hear from Antibalas, IROK and Bhi Bhiman in conversation and in session!
San Francisco’s Bhi Bhiman set out from his home in St. Louis in pursuit of the mecca of classic rock and roll – a city where Jefferson Airplane still haunts the streets. But once he arrived on the west coast, Bhiman found only a few remnants of this once golden age of American music. Not to be discouraged, the first-generation Sri Lankan singer/songwriter steeped himself in the rich American musical traditions of blues and folk. On his self-titled debut album, BHIMAN, he weaves stories of heartbreak and suffering, told with a disarming blend of humor and sincerity.
