This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline.  Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th.  Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.”  In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Welcome to the penultimate episode of our ninth season, featuring Pat Irwin of Suss. You may remember him from last year's Suss talk, with his bandmates Jonathan Gregg and Bob Holmes, but he's back for a solo talk this time, which allowed us to dig into his wild life in music, from his time in the the late ‘70s New York No Wave scene with The Raybeats and 8-Eyed Spy, to his work with Southern freak icons The B-52s, and his long career crafting music for TV and animation, including shows like Rocko's Modern Life and Bored to Death.  Things have been very, very busy on the Suss front. This year, Irwin contributed guitars, keyboards, harmonium, and loops to Suss' fifth album, Birds & Beasts. On top of that, Suss' Bob Holmes, who also hosts the must-listen Ambient Country podcast, has launched Across the Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings on board various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Transmissions guests like Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP comp.  Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Head over and peruse our site, where you'll find nearly 20 years of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. With your support, here's to another decade. Sometimes you feel like you've know someone forever... well at least since that one time he came to your small town during his "Impossible Truth" tour back in 2013 and played your local coffee shop. I'm talking about our southern brother, William Tyler. A legend among greats, Tyler played with the likes of Silver Jews and Lambchop prior to launching his solo career around 2010. He has crossed paths with the late Jack Rose, rocked with KY legend Bonnie "Prince" Billy and so many wonderful artists over the years. A Tennessee boy born and raised, Tyler grew up with his sister, whom he started the Stone Fox venue with in Nashville back in the day. Eventually signing with Merge Records, Tyler went on to release a large body of work with titles such as "Goes West", "Music From First Cow" and his Thrill Jockey debut entitled "Lost Futures" with Marisa Anderson back in 2021. Eventually relocating to LA for a few years, he has since been back in the south during the Pandemic crisis to reset and figure out his vision for the next chapter. Tyler is true blue and we couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you. Enjoy!

This week we discuss two records the deal with what could have been.Marisa Anderson and William Tyler's first collaborative record was created in the midst of riots, a pandemic and wildfires. They use this backdrop, along with their excellent guitar instrumentals and interesting use of electronics to paint a sonic picture of an alternate reality that never materialized. The Rolling Stones 1969 record Let it Bleed put a cap on the decade and in many ways was a response to the 60s counter-culture movement. Recorded in the midst of the band's own turmoil, the record provides good perspective and not to mention produced two all time classic songs. Here's the album recommendations from the show:Marisa Anderson, William Tyler – Lost FuturesThe Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed (1969)What do you think of these records? Portland, Oregon-based Marisa Anderson channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. From spacious melancholic laments to transcendent minimalism, Anderson is coming from a place between country, blues, and drone. On her 2018 record, Cloud Corner, she touches on Tuareg scales from "desert blues," the finger-style picking of so-called “American Primitive,” and chiming sad cowboy chords, while continuously moving and traveling on her guitar. She joins us in-studio.Marisa Anderson's new 2022 record is Still, Here:  Still, Here by Marisa Anderson   Watch the individual songs below:

On her second lp, the newly released Urban Driftwood, Virginia-based guitarist Yasmin Williams creates expansive acoustic music. Playing guitar, kalimba, percussion, and kora, she pulls from disparate musical strands—including the smooth jazz she heard growing up—into music that feels spiritually connected to New Age music, Windham Hill guitar, and the work of contemporaries like Daniel Bachman (who calls her "a guitarist for a new century"), William Tyler, and Marisa Anderson, both whom she's recently collaborated. She joined us for a conversation about being a Black artist in a primarily white genre, how she taught herself guitar, and how she processes the "American Primitive" genre tag.

Ever wondered why you should be listening to John Fahey? In this episode, I'm covering the life of John Fahey and giving you 10 guitarists that are heavily influenced by John Fahey and preserving a uniquely American art form! To understand how influential John Fahey is, we need to talk about American primitive guitar, a subgenre of folk/acoustic music. With one foot in blues and the other in country, American primitive guitar — founded by John Fahey himself! — was deeply percussive and focused on fingerpicking. If you want to understand how Fahey's influence is still being felt today, be sure to check out this list of acoustic artists who borrow heavily from Fahey's style. #10: Glenn Jones #9: Jack Rose #8: Nathan Bowles #7: Rob Noyes #6: Marisa Anderson #5: Daniel Bachman #4: Nathan Salsburg #3: Jan Morgenson #2: Joost Dijkema #1: Gwenifer Raymond Each one of these artists is building on John Fahey's legacy. Episode #22 of the Ground Shots Podcast This episode of the podcast features a conversation with Alyssa Sacora of the Patchwork Underground, who lives near Asheville, North Carolina. Alyssa came out to northern Idaho to take Jim Croft's 'Old Ways of Making Books' class held every year or every other year on the homestead of Jim Croft and Melody Eckroft, where I have been teaching the leather, parchment and brain-tan buckskin portion of the class. Alyssa makes books and paper, weaves baskets, and homesteads on her small property. We met back in 2013 when we both attended the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine's in-person summer immersion program which at the time was held out of Leicester, NC. It was sweet to catch up with Alyssa, an old friend. We decided to do something different for this episode, where we chat informally and candidly about life, my project, our motivations for things and generally processing our shared experiences being at the class together in northern Idaho. This episode gets extra vulnerable for me, and you hear a lot more about my process and experience doing my work on the road. We have some guest mosquitoes buzz by the mic!         In this conversation with Alyssa, we talk about:     some of my own personal stories around trauma, travel  what is love? Alyssa reflecting on her experience at the 'Old Ways of Making Books' class exploring what it means to make things for your life linear vs. non-linear ways of teaching and learning the nature of acceptance and letting go, leaning into vulnerability and discomfort how we can plant seeds of inspiration for one another trusting in the mystery of the process     Links: Alyssa Sacora's website: https://www.thepatchworkunderground.com/ Alyssa Sacora on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepatchworkunderground/ Interstitial music for this episode is Pretty Polly by Marisa Anderson  Marisa Anderson on Bandcamp:  https://marisaanderson.bandcamp.com Jim Croft's 'Old Ways of Making Books' class in Santa, Idaho where I taught hide tanning and visited during the month of July 2019. And we’re back. Welcome to the May edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast, our recurring series of conversations and audio esoterica. On this program, we’re joined by singer/songwriter Gillian Welch. Along with her partner David Rawlings, Welch has tapped into the wellspring of American vernacular music. Her albums — including 2001’s Time (The Revelator) and 2011’s The Harrow & the Harvest — are part of one of the strongest bodies of work in modern folk music. Welch is about to hit the road with Rawlings, embarking on a series of “An Evening With” dates June through October, and this summer sees the vinyl reissue of her 2003 LP Soul Journey. We spoke to Welch via phone about her attention to the long player, album-length statement. Then, we have a review of the release by the Shinya Fukumori Trio, For 2 Akis by writer and head of Footfalls Records Leah Toth; released by the stalwart ECM label, the new release unites players from France, Germany, and Japan for a quiet, but subtly immersive new album, produced by ECM head Manfred Eicher. And we close out this month’s episode with a conversation recorded live backstage with Marisa Anderson. She’s one of the most engaging solo guitarists in the field today, blending blues, folk, and country forms into political and personal statements. On June 15, she releases her debut for Thrill Jockey Records, Cloud Corner. A meditative and peaceful record, the record serves as a respite from the constant noise of our modern times. We spoke with Anderson about the need for those kinds of musical spaces, the influence of science fiction on her work, and her subversive reinterpretation of traditional and public domain music.

Few things in the "Green Space" get as wonky as energy policy - or get as popular when utility bills can start shrinking. Players in the Energy Sector are utility companies (and their shareholders), government regulators, enviro-advocates, municipalities, businesses of all kinds - and us Average Joes who use and pay for energy. Josh Campbell, Executive Director of the Missouri Energy Initiative, works this sector behind the scenes, negotiating for benefits that range from energy efficiency financing options to getting more solar and wind power into the system.  This Earthworms conversation covers state energy policy dynamics, PACE financing, responses in Missouri and Illinois to the U.S. EPA's Clean Power Plan, energy efficiency efforts in the Midwest region - and the kinds of relationships helping our region move from reliance on "Legacy Fuels" toward resilient, diverse, clean energy systems - in ways that all can afford. Episode #28: In an industry where it's difficult to make a living, musicians have had to become more and more creative to survive, especially with shrinking royalties in their pockets. One way some artists have managed to succeed is to tap into -- or create -- a niche market. Whether it's inventing a new genre or signing to an obscure label, their stories prove that there's not just one path to success in the music business. Our guests on this episode share their unique approaches to what they do. We hear from Simon Tam, founder of Asian American dance rock band The Slants, who saw a lucrative opportunity in playing anime conventions. Charmaine Clamor, creator of Jazzipino, a genre combining Filipino folk songs with American jazz and blues, also joins us. Finally we talk with Eric Isaacson, founder of Portland's enigmatic Mississippi Records.
