PULSARS mark the end of that era. Leader Dave Trumfio (vocals, guitar, synths production and most anything else) and his younger brother Harry (drums) grew up playing music in a suburban Chicago basement.  While still in his teens, Dave abandoned college-level music production and engineering studies to focus on songwriting and artist endeavors; his native talents soon found him an apprenticeship at Seagrape Studios working with talents as disparate as house music pioneer Mr Fingers, British first-wave stalwarts The Pretty Things and dub plate sessions with the legendary reggae producer / musician Niney The Observer . . . all within months of his first real go behind the mixing desk. Chicago's past musical glories felt far in the past then, replaced by a sea of skinny tie power pop bands, poofy hair metal combos of some timidity and a few rough-hewn exponents of sub-Buzzcocks punk and Fiorucci-ready new wave.  Ignoring it all, Dave ran a small studio in a shared house he rented with friends before taking the risky - and expensive - plunge into opening a 'real' studio on the northwest corner of Wicker Park, soon to burst into a degree of infamy due to a small contingent of cult heroes who lived there for cheap rent and cheaper bars - Liz Phair, Eleventh Dream Day, Big Black, Urge Overkill, Tortoise et al. Daves role in all of this was minimal by nature; he preferred to record acts from farther afield - Billy Bragg, then-recent Chicago transplants Wilco, The Mekons, Young Marble Giants guitarist and songwriter Stuart Moxham, Barbara Manning, Captain Beefhearts main man Gary Lucas, an array of other acts from Iceland, Australia and all corners of the UK.  Business was good, and it grew.  A quick writer of odd pop ditties, one day Dave called in his brother Harry and recorded - in a single afternoon session - a set of nine demos known.  The story's been related countless times, but within weeks the band was opening for Oasis and found itself being courted by a dozen labels. Their few local shows were undefinable. Dave played guitar and sang, Harry drummed triggered a reel of additional music, often with video backing . . . which dazzled spectators in that pre-laptop era.  After months of negotiations, the band signed a multi-million deal with Almo Sounds, a new label begun by A&M founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss and distributed by Geffen.  It was - and likely still is - the largest deal ever offered to an emerging Chicago musical act. The band engaged in numerous tours to support their self-titled debut, playing with Sean Lennon & Cibo Matto, Blur, Supergrass, and many others, as well as seemingly infinite jaunts to Japan, where Dave and Harry were hailed as heroes of subversive minimalist pop - the ecstatic screams of young fans at the first few notes of Submission To The Master& at first bewildering the brothers.  Suddenly, the Almo Sounds deal with Geffen fell apart at the start of a tour supporting then-current sensations Weezer.  Promotion was pulled; radio support for the first single from the album collapsed in a mere moment. Due to contractual vagaries, the band was allowed to complete a second (unreleased) album just before the label folded.  And that was it, until the news of the 2021 release of Pulsar Transmissions", a collection of unheard songs and versions that the band recorded before and during their short-term deal.  Rolling Stone offered their self titled debut ;Pulsars as one of the 40 greatest albums ever recorded by an act with one real album:     PULSARS's Info Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/pulsarsband/?hl=en X / Twitter:  https://x.com/PulsarsBand Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pulsarsofficial/

THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW Featuring Emily Duff - Emily Duff is a longtime icon of New York City's roots-rock community. Emily Duff has spent her career blurring the lines between rock & roll, soul, roadhouse country, and punk. She's been a solo artist. A bandmate. A multi-instrumentalist who strums the guitar plays the cello, and writes her own string arrangements. But above all else, Emily Duff has been — and always will be — a songwriter.  "If you ain't composing, you're decomposing," she says. "I like to keep myself moving and keep myself writing. I usually write one song a day. It's been that way for years." Duff's songs emphatically nod to the sounds that first captivated her attention as a child during the 1970s. Raised in Queens and Long Island, she gravitated toward the era's roots legends and soul singers: Kris Kristofferson, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Al Green, and countless others. Don't Let Go turns that rich tapestry of sound into fuel for something original, with Duff delivering a collection of heartland rock anthems, folksongs, barn burners, gothic murder ballads, soulful love songs, and everything in between.  She's a street-smart New Yorker who traded mix tapes with Lou Reed during her 20s and struck up a musical partnership with Gary Lucas, the experimental guitarist who performed with Captain Beefheart's Magic Band before launching his project, Gods and Monsters. When the band's original lead singer, Jeff Buckley, left the lineup to launch his meteoric solo career, Duff stepped in as his replacement. Before long, she'd left that band and formed another group, Eudora, whose mix of Americana instrumentation and baroque textures earned them a gig opening for Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. From the stage of CBGB's — where she played her first show — to the confines of her 340 square foot Greenwich Village tenement apartment where she is happily raising her two teenage children and hound dog with her husband, Emily Duff has never been afraid to chase her muse into uncharted territory. Duff presently has a record being mixed and another in production. Both are “modern records” inspired by classic American roots music, with Duff upholding her status as a genre-bending lifer. website The world needs to hear from The Mortal Prophets, with a horror film like underbelly feel of the Americanist Religions. John Beckmann is the guy who can pull everything from the Unrepentant fallen preacher, still revieving visions and able to scare you in the delivery. He did some great work with Gary Lucas the guitar god, and covered some pre war blues, and he even talked about the assasination of JFK in his lyrics. There is nothing we won't cover in his subject matter, and he reminds you of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, with Shriekback, and some sort of mad carnival barker. #mortalprophets #garylucas #captainbeefheart #robertjohnson #jimmyhendrix #shriekback #alabama3 soundcloud website instagram youtube

In this episode, we welcome the great Lenny Kaye — all the way from NYC — and ask him to reminisce about his New Jersey youth; the revelation that was rock 'n' roll; his exposure in 1966 to Crawdaddy! and other pioneering music zines, and of course his first encounters with the inimitable Patti Smith. Along the way we hear about his landmark 1972 anthology Nuggets, and about his thrilling new book Lightning Striking.Clips from John Tobler's 1978 audio interview with Patti prompt Lenny to relive key moments from the '70s, including the pair's engagement with the British punk scene on their band's first London visit in May '76. To mark the 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin IV, he also talks about his rave Rolling Stone review of that album, a piece he stands by to this day. His hosts also note the imminent release of the follow-up to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Americana classic Raising Sand. The RBP team pays its respects to Maureen Cleave, whose crucial early pieces on the Beatles made her part of Fab Four folklore. Lenny mentions his New York mentor Danny Fields (episode 28) whose syndication of Maureen's "more popular than Jesus" Lennon interview sparked an unholy fundamentalist backlash across America. Mark & Jasper talk us out with remarks about "new and notable" library pieces on — among other subjects — Patti Smith (1972) and Led Zeppelin (1969)! And several more great interviews and reviews besides…Many thanks to special guest Lenny Kaye. Zig At The Gig with Jared Michael Nickerson of Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber   Jared Michael Nickerson is a Grammy-nominated Bold Soul, Rock & Roll Brother from Ohio. He experienced his first taste of live performance at local high school talent shows, one of the”labs” along with the church and basement dens of the legendary Dayton funk scene which spawned the Ohio Players, Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Sun, Dayton, Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame, Faze-O and members of Heatwave. He continued his musical development at the University of Notre Dame under the direction of Father Wiskerchen, (noted for his development of three-fourths of the “Chicago”horn section). After graduating with a B.A. in Business Management, Jared moved to Boston, studied for two years at the New England Conservatory of Music before embarking on his professional music career with a local seven-piece funk band, Hypertension.   After six years in Boston he returned to Dayton, Ohio and a year later joined the Cleveland Ohio band The Human Switchboard. After three years of touring the Midwest & East Coast still based in Ohio, he moved with the band to New York City and back-flipped into the local music scene of CBGBs, Danceteria, The Peppermint Lounge, Maxwells ( Hoboken N.J.) and The World. After HS dissolved Jared started his own band JJ Jumpers; joined the Black Rock Coalition becoming the B.R.C.'s first Director of Operations. His first booking was the B.R.C.'s first, two-day, mini-fest at CBGBs entitled “Stalking Heads” on February 11th and 12th,1987. When he departed a few years later the new Director of Operations and BRC East & West Coast Booking Committees had access to rock & roll venues all across the country. Jared has “laid the bottom” for folks such as Nona Hendryx, Wadada Leo Smith, Human Switchboard, JJ Jumpers, Vernon Reid, Marshall Crenshaw, Melvin Van Peebles, Freedy Johnston, Catie Curtis, Ivan Julian, John Paul Bourelly, Katell Keineg, Bernie Worrell, The The, Gary Lucas's Gods and Monsters, Chocolate Genius, Darlene Love, Jeff Buckley, The Yohimbe Brothers with DJ Logic & Vernon Reid, Tammy Faye Starlite and the Angels of Mercy, Pheeroan akLaff, Divine Pocket Bouncers, Cynthia Sley, Dayton Flic, The Raybeats and the Band of Gypsy's Revisited Band. Jared co-wrote a tune, recorded and toured with Charlie Musselwhite. “Sanctuary”, on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, found itself on numerous critic top ten lists and received a Grammy nomination.   A suggestion from a mutual friend, led to a call from Greg Tate landing Jared among a number of “Badasses” which included Vijay Iyer and Ronny “Wirepuller” Drayton for a jam session that morphed into Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber. Burnt Sugar Index LLC soon followed with Jared handling all BSAC's business affairs such as arranging an eight-week residency with BRIC studios (The organization that presents Celebrate Brooklyn) to workshop and preview Melvin Van Peebles theatrical version of “Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song”. The workshop culminated with three sold-out BRIC performances before BSAC departed for Paris to perform two sold-out performances at the Sons D'Hiver Festival in 2010. Jared, overseeing “bookings” throughout the United States, Canada, France, England, Portugal, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands and Italy, just celebrated his twentieth year as BSAC's CEO last year. He's even “dipped his toe” in tour managing having worked with Concord Records Alt-Folk artist Valerie June including the set-up of her August 21st, 2013 debut television appearance on David Letterman. His television appearances include Late Night With David Letterman, The Jools Holland Show, MTV, VH1, The Tonight Show with Conan O Brien, The John Stewart Show and as bassist with The Kennedy Center Honors BB King Tribute Band; jamming with Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Etta James, Joe Williams and Steve Cropper to name a few. You'll find him in Nelson George's “Finding The Funk” documentary speaking about growing up while playing music in Dayton Ohio in the late Sixties. Jared has toured extensively performing at venues such as the Toronto Skydome, Red Rocks, the L.A. Forum, the Oakland Coliseum, England's Brixton Academy, Brighton Dome & Reading Festivals, The Beacon Theater, Lincoln Center and Madison Square Garden.   Jared's Info https://www.burntsugarindex.com/ https://burntsugarthearkestrachamber....

If tenor saxophone giant Lester Young said someone has "big ears" it was a high compliment.  It meant they were hearing everything that was there to be heard.  They had acumen and they had discernment (and what higher aspiration is there for a studious listener?).     If Lester Young had heard the music of guitarist Gary Lucas, he would certainly have cited his auricular capaciousness. Captain Beefheart? Sure.  1930's Chinese pop? Certainly.  Classical composition? Why not.  Gary takes all his food on the same plate, and everything is the subject of profound scrutiny.    In this Deep Focus from 2018, Gary Lucas turns his attention to Charles Mingus.  Know this, adepts and newbies alike: nothing will prepare you for the impact of what you will hear on this show (unless, of course, you heard this show in 2018).     #WKCR #JazzAlternatvies #DeepFocus #MitchGoldman #GaryLucas #CharlesMingus @JazzRadio #JazzInterview   Photo credit: Charles_Mingus_1976 Tom Marcello Webster - New York - CC BY-SA 2.0

Rolo McGinty in conversation talking about life in the Woodentops  The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial line-up of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of The Wild Swans and The Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Paul Hookham (drums). After a debut single, "Plenty" on Food Records in 1984, which received a glowing review from Morrissey in Melody Maker, they signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records, releasing a series of singles in 1985 and their debut album, Giant, in 1986. Generally well received by critics, the album's sound was characterised by acoustic guitars, but also featured accordion, marimba, strings, and trumpet sounds. The album reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart. A single from the album, "Good Thing", reached No. 7 on the UK Indie Chart. The band then became more experimental and frenetic when playing live, using more electronic sounds. This first became apparent as documented on the live album Live Hypno Beat (1987), which was recorded in Los Angeles in 1986. The band also started to become more 'raw' and unpredictable live, becoming one of the most exciting independent groups from the UK, while gaining an early hit on the burgeoning club scene in Ibiza with '"Why". In 1987, Thompson left to be replaced by Anne Stephenson of The Communards. The more experimental mood continued on the second album Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway, released the following year, which failed to live up to the expectations set by their debut. Most notably, the listeners of Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM voted their song "Stop This Car" number 15 out of 106 in the KROQ Top 106.7 Countdown of 1988, outperforming many more established acts, and one of the album's standout tracks, "Wheels Turning", became a dancefloor favourite. The Woodentops continued to play live, touring the world until 1992, and tracks such as "Tainted World" became a regular on New York radio station Kiss FM with DJ Tony Humphries. Vocalist and guitarist Rolo McGinty, who also wrote all Woodentops' songs, resurfaced with the DJ band Pluto in the 1990s, the Dogs Deluxe electronica project and also provided vocals for Gary Lucas's, Gods and Monsters. Guitarist Simon Mawby was briefly a member of The House of Love in the early 1990s. The Woodentops returned to live performances in September 2006 and, in October 2009, they performed in a special concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London's South Bank. They also curated the events in the Front Room of the same theatre with an exhibition of works by artist Panni Bharti, and concerts by musicians Worm, Othon and Ernesto Tomasini.

Guest:  Mathew Johns (Managing Director, DMG Financial Planning Pty Ltd) Duration:  17:39:46 Date Recorded:  March 3, 2015 The whole conversation of integrating financial planning and accounting is an old one. Many different models of integration have taken place over the years, all with varying degrees of success. One key element - fundamentally – is putting together the silos of advice; moving it from ‘my clients’ and ‘their clients’ to ‘OUR’ clients. This hasn’t been the mainstay of these different models. Today’s guest Mathew Johns of DMG Financial Planning Pty Ltd (and his predecessor, Gary Lucas) have steered their financial advisory firm down this very unique approach. A collaborative operation; something different where clients actually see two people sitting across from them providing a common, collaborative solution all while coming from slightly different technical backgrounds. Join us in today’s podcast as we discuss Matt’s biggest lessons, benefits/issues, and of course, client feedback in their journey through integrated financial services.

Some Voices (00:00) Waudang 1 (00:26) “Howdy Doody” Theme (07:17) “Charlie Brown” Theme (07:45) “Vertigo” / “Psycho” Theme Medley (09:11) Fucshia (13:06) Triologue (17:28) Duologue (19:05) Solologue (19:49) Belem (20:36) Painted Desert (36:00) Live at the Metz’ Arsenal Part 2 (39:29) Quiet Money (46:26) The introductory chaos comes from R. Stevie Moore's second album, Delicate Tension. Recorded in 1978, but re-released at least twice and peppered with extra tracks over the decades. The first proper track, at about 00:25, is sacred flute music from New Guinea, recorded by Ragnar Johnson and assisted by Jessica Mayer. Wonderful folks, I'm sure. Robert Wyatt and his wife Alfreda Benge had some clout in getting these recordings released on Rounder in 1999. Digital mastering was done in July, 2015 and the revamped version of these recordings -- Sacred Flute Music from New Guinea-- will be out in mid-April on the Ideologic Organ label. Switching up rather radically, the following three tracks are from guitarist Gary Lucas, who has played with such wide-ranging artists as Captain Beefheart, Peter Hammill, and Jeff Buckley, as well as amassing an impressive body of solo work. These oddball takes on movie themes are from Lucas's album Cinefantastique. Next comes the track "Fuchsia" from the album Amaranth, by the trio who goes by the name Icepick -- Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten. Wooley plays trumpet, Corsano is on drums, and Haker-Flaten plays double-bass. Monofonous, 2016. The following three tracks also feature Nate Wooley, as well as Zeena Parkins and Vera Westera. The music and texts on this album are inspired by Charles Baudelaire and are the brainchild of composer Bojan Vuletic, who gave the trio of musicians ideas to work with and then reworked their playing into the final product. Partly composed, partly improvised. See here for more details regarding this fascinating record, fugitive beauté. The next two tracks are performances by the MMM Quartet - Fred Frith, Joelle Leandre, Alvin Curran and Urs Leimgruber, on guitar, double bass, piano, and sax, respectively. The first MMM track is titled "Belem" and is from the album Oakland/Lisboa. The second track, "Part 2" is the tail end of a concert given by the quartet from the album Live at Metz Arena. These tracks are separated by an intermission: "Painted Desert" is from the album The Pharaoh's Bee by ex-Pere Ubu member Allen Ravenstine. Ravenstine was the Ubu member responsible for upping the chaos ante by adding analog synthesizer noise to the proceedings. Quite unlike his contributions to Ubu, this album is full of gentle, meditative sounds, albeit not without a certain edge. More info here. Finally, "Quiet Money" by The Remote Viewers, from their latest album, November Sky. More info on The RVs here. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed compiling it!

Brian, Bill, and Matt discuss how this song would have worked in Buckley's catalog and how they can hear Buckley in the song. Hello again! At the outset of putting together the 18th episode, I knew I couldn’t reasonably expect listeners to sit through almost three hours of this business, but there was too much good stuff left on the cutting room floor, so I knew fairly early on that there would be a “bonus EP” of sorts. In the spirit of the other Haines-inspired title, I’m calling this one: What This Was Going to Supposed to Mean Here’s the tracklist, following the format of Episode 18, it’s just bare bones, with credits and other info directly following it. Please take a look at the previous blog post for more info on all the albums from which these tracks are culled. I won’t rehash info at the album level, only what’s unique and pertinent at the level of each individual track. Episode 18.1 Playlist (00:00) “Testing Testing” (03:00) “In a Landscape X” (06:16) “Art in Heaven” (08:50) “What Is Free to a Good Home (For Robert Wyatt)” (13:55) “Live on the Internet: A Diary (April 7)” (17:51) “Cellular Phone” (21:04) “In a Landscape XL” (23:47) “Third World Two Medley: She Was Showing Me / Boint Liver” (26:15) “Vocalise (For Jeanne Lee)” (45:23) “Paint Me!” (50:48) “Toy Epigrams” (53:42) “Today” (57:05) “In a Landscape XXXVI” (59:17) “What this Was Going to Supposed to Mean” (1:01:27) “This Dedication” Tracks 1, 3, 8, 14 and 15 are from the Darn It! album. Tracks 2, 7 and 13 were recorded by John Gallaher. Tracks 4, 10 and 12 are from Curlew’s A Beautiful Western Saddle album. Track 5 was recorded by Becca Klaver. Track 6 was from Karen Alkalay-Gut’s album Thin Lips. Track 9 was from the Joelle Leandre / Steve Dalachinsky album The Bill Has Been Paid. Track 11 was from the Bernadette Mayer reading captured on the Rattle up a Deer CD. All information given in the previous blog post applies here as well except for the following: Track 1 features the voices of Paul Haines’s sons, and the latter part of the track features guitar and bass from ex-”No Wave” pioneer and DNA member Tim Wright. Track 3 finds Derek Bailey playing guitar and reciting Haines’s poem. Track 8 features vocals by Mary Margaret O’Hara, Fernando Saunders on bass, and Gary Lucas on guitar. Gary also wrote the music. On track 14 you’ll hear saxophone from Evan Parker and vocals by Carmen Lundy. Finally, track 15 was written by, and features tenor sax from, John Tchicai, bass by Andy Gonzalez, and drums by Marvin Smith. Enjoy, and let Papers for the Border know what you think!
