"I was the kind of kid that made friends with my bully," Alyssa told Renée. This didn't help her much, because the bullying was rampant. She was bullied at school all day, every year, only to come home to the biggest bully of all: her father. Add to that the facts that Alyssa grew up racially isolated and that her parents' divorce only intensified her father's abuse, and you get a nasty web of complex trauma. Alyssa comes to the show looking for help with the present, however, specifically a friend break-up that she can't get over. As is so often the case, it turns out that the emotions of the present are tangled up in the past, so Renée helps Alyssa develop a plan to untangle them. Alyssa is not only smart, articulate, and creative; she also laughs easily, which is particularly impressive given the many pain points in her history. And at only 22, that pain is still fresh. Alyssa shares her story with humor and vulnerability, and Renée points her towards the healing that will put her many years of therapy to good use.Support the show

Season 4 of the Grow Your Mind Podcast includes some bite-sized morsels of gold. Our bite-sized episodes are under 5 minutes during which two kids unpack a dilemma or the ethics of an idea. This bite-size, our hosts try to get their heads around words - if they really matter that much and if we give them too much power or too little. This episode was created for International Non-Binary People's Day on July 14, 2023. And the hosts of the show also discuss if we have too many international theme days and the significance of this one in particular. They kids are both trying to understand why words in this context might be so crucial. Please note, non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that sit within, outside of, across or between the spectrum of the male and female binary. A non-binary person might identify as gender fluid, trans masculine, trans feminine, a-gender or bi-gender. At Grow Your Mind we know that self-expression and being able to completely bring and be your whole self at work, in school or in the community is vital for enduring good mental health. Did you know that Grow Your Mind is a wellbeing program you can get into your school? Written by teachers, for teachers, we have lesson plans, videos, animations, an album on Spotify full of non-painful yet life affirming songs AND we also have a few awards under our belt. "It's really good if we can get the changes through here - that can be an inspiration for other other countries or other places in the world," says Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, chair of Samtökin '78, the national queer organization of Iceland. In 2019, Iceland passed the Gender Autonomy Act, which added an option for people to register their official gender as X; with it, the country's strictly binary-gendered naming laws were suddenly transformed. Other changes, like a new genderfree pronoun, are catching on; but overhauling a whole grammatically gendered language is no easy undertaking. Find out more about the topics covered in this episode, and a transcript, at theallusionist.org/todaytomorrow2; and browse down your podfeed to listen to Today, Tomorrow part 1 about how Icelandic officially obtains new words, and navigates the challenges of being an old language in the present day; and the episode Name V Law, about the Icelandic Naming Committee and the strict laws before the updates discusssed in this episode. LGBTTTQQIAA, Kebebasan Tanpa Batas Melahirkan Ketidakteraturan Oleh: Vidya Spaey Putri Ayuningtyas, S.T., MaHS, IAI (Tim Redaksi NarasiPost.Com ) Voice Over Talent : Yeni M NarasiPost. LGBT pun berkembang menjadi LGBTQ+. Jen Hartmann is a fashion designer and founder of the trans-positive label Baal Fashion. Jen is pretty much ok with all the traditional pronouns, but prefers he/him. He is non-binary and also identifies as bigender. Find out what that means to Jen in this episode. We also talk about growing up with a very gendered language, being expected to fit into cultural and gendered stereotypes, disrupting the fashion industry and the future of innovation, how clothes are an integral part of gender expression, navigating entrepreneurship and the challenges that come with doing your own thing, surrendering to divine timing, and that one size does not fit all. Dorothy Pierre-Louis uses he/him/his pronouns, and his nickname is Thyo (pronounced like Theo). He is non-binary and also uses the labels bigender and trans-masculine, as well as toric and graysexual. Find out what that means to Thyo in this episode. Thyo (pronounced like Theo) is a simple urban animal who resides with his friends in a cozy den in Philadelphia. He currently works as a technical recruiter and aspires to make it in the entertainment/media industry as a writer. This dream is slightly hindered by the fact that Thyo is a recovering survivor of the Ivy League education system. As such, he has a complicated relationship with writing and will likely never write ever again. More on www.fiftyshadesofgender.com/dorothy
Lor is an entrepreneur, author and teacher and uses he/she pronouns. He is non-binary, and intersex – assigned female at birth but genetically male – and she is figuring things out when it comes to gender identities, currently working with the labels demiboy and bigender. Find out what that means to Lor in this episode. In addition to the aforementioned labels, Lor also talks about identifying as trans. She has since asked me to omit this label from the title. In Lor's words: "I've since been reflecting on this as I don't believe I should bend to societal pressure to label myself as trans when I am already 'both'. I can't transition into what I already genetically and biologically 'am' - if that makes sense!" Just goes to show we are all very much a work in progress. In fact, Lor has made some very interesting discoveries about himself since we recorded, so a follow-up episode is definitely on the horizon! We also talk about hormone therapy, the vagueness of consent when it comes to medical procedures and the lack of knowledge about intersex variations in the medical profession, reclaiming body autonomy, the wonder that is foetal development, the difference between sex, gender identity and sexual orientation, and why doing identity work is a good idea. Cross-dresser. Transvestite. Gender-Fluid. Transgender. BiGender. Just a few of the words that come up in this episode. They may not mean to you what they mean to our guest, and every approach is valid when someone identifies with any or all of those words. The words we have at our disposal to describe ourselves can be key in our acceptance of who we are. Being able to successfully put across to others, where we fall on the spectrum of gender can sometimes also be key to their understanding of who we are. Allowing for more open and beneficial conversations. [caption id="attachment_1377" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Crossdressing and Being Gender Fluid[/caption] Our guest for this episode presents as both male and female. George when presenting as male, and Georgie when presenting as female. When we met it was a day for she and her pronouns, despite Bakji’s accidental faux pas of ‘we are joined with a chap named George’ right at the beginning of our interview. Luckily we were talking to a very open, lovely and level-headed individual who understands these things happen. If you would like to follow George on Twitter you can do so via @georgemitton. Part of why we were keen to invite George onto the podcast is that he is completely open with everyone in his life about his Gender-Fluid orientation. Including family, friends and colleagues. With many aspects of BDSM and alternative lifestyles of all types the decision about whether or not to be open is a really big one. So speaking to someone who has been through it was an interesting experience. We asked Georgie how and when she discover this side of herself, and how it integrated into her life in both the earlier days, and up to and including the present day. This includes some success stories of sharing with others, and periods of time where George was pushed to the forefront, and the fluidity of gender was not as present. Overall though this is an immensely positive episode, we discuss how we can best approach telling people about the aspect of yourself you have yet to share with them, in this case being Gender-Fluid, but it could equally apply to other situations. We also cover women (and of course men) who not only support men who identify in these ways, but are also actively attracted to them. Make-up, clothes, prosthetic boobs and wigs also come up in conversation, as we ask Georgie where some good places to shop are, and what key pieces she finds most useful. Likewise we enquire as to what kind of events are available, for once you are all dressed up and want to get together with some like minded folk. Obviously as always you can hit Fetlife and the usual Fetish events and munches that we recommend, but we actually do discover some new events through talking to Georgie.
