Did someone say dusty? You knew it would happen sooner or later, but for the first time in the history of #themashupky - we taste and review a vintage bourbon whiskey. This week, we head back in time to 1998 (and overseas) to sip and review a Maker's Mark Black Wax “Bourbon” which was made exclusively for the Japanese market. Rumored to be aged approximately 2-3 years longer than the standard red wax Maker's and coming in at 95 proof, this bottle has become sought after in recent years, especially those getting into dusties. But, should you be looking to add this one to your collection? As we sip this week, we reminisce about 1998 and think about how this expression compares to what Maker's offers today. Also, we talk Buffalo Trace Distillery expansion. You will definitely want to listen this week as we FINALLY cross over into dusty bourbon territory. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!

In this week's episode we are going to talk about Doug's Band Days! You may not know this buy music brought Doug to Maine. He started playing bass guitar when he was younger out of necessity to form a band with his pals. Doug would play for hours learning and listening to some Rock n Roll. After high school Doug picked up a guitar and with his friend Matt formed Black Wax named after a Gilbert Gottfried joke! They lived in Buffalo, New York and on tour played some shows in Maine and they loved it so much that they hopped in the van and moved up to Maine in 1994 when Doug was just 21. Unfortunately Black Wax did not last and later that year Doug joined Vicious Cycle. After a few years he joined another band! While he may not be in a band currently Doug still plays Rock music and loves when he gets time to jam with friends. So if you're looking to Rock out or Make Maine Your Home, you don't have to do it alone! I had been thinking a lot about how sound - the score and incidental music - effect the mood and even the story in horror movies and looking for a way to discuss that on the podcast when I came across the book Blood On Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks On Vinyl, written by this week's guest conversationalists, Aaron Lupton and Jeff Szpirglas. It is, as the name would imply, a guide to horror movie soundtracks, including scores and compilations, that can be found on vinyl. But it's also a history of the changing styles of horror films, a peek into the minds of composers like Jerry Goldsmith, John Carpenter, and Goblin, and an art book with beautifully rendered reproductions of album art work. The book covers everything from The Shining to Street Trash, from the incidental sound collage of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to symphonic scores like Goldsmith's brilliant work on Gremlins. Both Lupton and Szpirglas review soundtracks for Rue Morgue magazine, and they have an expansive knowledge of their subject, and somewhat different tastes. Their descriptions can be fairly granular, down to describing common horror soundtracks instruments like the waterphone, which we talk about here. I'll post a demonstration of that instrument on the blog so you can hear it for yourself. They also talk about details like how good George Romero was at finding the perfect library-sourced music on a budget, how many genres of music horror soundtracks cover, the resurgence of soundtracks on vinyl, and even the complexities of reproducing soundtracks live with the movie playing on a screen behind the musicians. And I also ruin Avengers: Endgame for Aaron. Sorry, Aaron.. You can find Blood On Black Wax at all the good bookstores, and some record stores, and online in all the usual places. And you can also find more of their ongoing work in Rue Morgue magazine. I discovered this week's featured track while I was getting ready to produce this episode. I'd had another song in mind, which you will hear in a future episode, but this one is perfect for this episode. With its chaotic guitar riffs and punk attitude, it could easily be the lead single from a horror movie soundtrack. And it is, in a way, because the video is a short horror movie itself, featuring a young couple looking for a place for an amorous tryst in what looks like a creepy concrete warehouse, as young couples often do. And, also as young couples often do, they find themselves menaced by ghoulish employees who just won't let them be. Miss June's debut LP, Bad Luck Party, will be out September 6 on Frenchkiss Records. I think you'll be hearing a lot more from them. Keep track of them on their website, and you have to love this, at www.ihatemissjune.com, on Instagram also under ihatemissjune, and on Facebook under missjunenz.

AIN’T NO STOPPING WHAT CAN’T BE STOPPED, NO KILLING WHAT CAN’T BE KILLED, ESPECIALLY EPISODE 93 OF CINEPUNX! We are so glad you have joined us for this spectacular and timely episode. Recently, both Josh and I were able to catch premiere screenings of the new amazing horror documentary Horror Noire and we both felt extremely compelled to cover it. The timing of the film could not be better, as February is both Black Heritage Month and Women in Horror Month, and this film is an exploration of the history of Black presence and representation in horror, and features the powerful voices of many women, including huge friend of the show Ashlee Blackwell We are so proud of her and our other friends involved in the project like Phile Nobile Jr and others! The movie is fantastic! To continue our discussion but moving unto another black produced, non-fiction film, we decided to cover the 1983 Gil Scott-Heron concert film Black Wax As usual we also do our patented WACK AND ON TRACK feature, and as usual I should link to some jawns from that but nah, I am fine. Anyway, check out CROSSED KEYS ROUGH CUT ASPECT RATIO and of course all the other podcasts and our awesome writers here at Cinepunx! Thanks for all your support! Tell a friend, it is a huge help to us! The post CINEPUNX Episode 93: HORROR NOIRE and BLACK WAX appeared first on Cinepunx.

Cadogan is the daughter of singer Lola Cadogan, who released several 78rpm singles of devotional music during the 1950s. She spent several years of her childhood in Belize, where her family had moved, before returning to Jamaica. She worked as an assistant librarian, taking a job in the library of the University of the West Indies at Mona. Her talents as a singer led to her recording her first single, "Love My Life" for Jamaican Broadcasting DJ Jerry Lewis, who was the boyfriend of one of Cadogan's schoolfriends. Lee "Scratch" Perry was in the recording studio at the time, and was impressed by Cadogan's voice enough to record an album's worth of material with her, also renaming her Susan. One of her first recordings for Perry, a cover of Millie Jackson's soul hit, "Hurt So Good" (featuring bassist Boris Gardiner and the Zap Pow horns), was released to little effect in Jamaica on Perry's new 'Perries' record label, but was released in the UK by Dennis Harris's DIP International label, and topped the UK Reggae Chart. Magnet Records picked up the single and it went on to reach the top 5 of the UK Singles Chart, with Cadogan flying to London to promote the single, including a television appearance on Top of the Pops. Cadogan then signed directly to Magnet, who issued the official follow-up, the Pete Waterman produced "Love Me Baby", which reached number 22 in July 1975, but was her last UK hit Perry, meanwhile, arranged with the Birmingham based label Black Wax to release an unofficial follow-up - a remixed version of "Love My Life". Other singles were released on Klik and Lucky in an attempt to cash in, but none of these charted.

It seems a bit like comic books are everywhere these days: dominating our screens from Iron Man to Jessica Jones. But this isn't the first time that there's been a comic book boom. And it's not always as easy to ride that wave, as an artist, as it might seem. Comic artist Matt Huynh has had a lot of success at this comic-making thing. First in Australia, now in New York. We're also joined by Marcelo Baez, who witnessed the 90s comics craziness first hand. Links from this episode: So much of Matt's art is on his site; but you'll need to check out SBS to read the Boat. Have a look at Marcelo's work on his site. There's some Diabla artwork to see as well. Frank Miller wrote and drew things like the Dark Knight Returns, 300, Sin City and Daredevil. The Daredevil story Born Again was one of the comics Matt recommends getting started reading with. The other comic he recommended was Marjane Satrapi's Chicken with Plums, which is first date approved by his girlfriend. Some of the Australian comics mentioned in the episode were Cyberswine, Da 'n Dill, Hairbutt the Hippo, Squadron Supremeand Tim McEwan's Greener Pastures. Matt drew us a red homage to McEwan's comic for FBi's upcoming Brush with Fame art auction for 2016: Songs from this episode: Girl — Beck Strange Nostalgia For The Future — Cut Copy Golden Valves — Orkestra Del Sol Phat Planet — Leftfield Boardwalks — Little may Black Wax — Dananananaykroyd

2000 hrs (UK) A special Sunday version this month: This month on 120 minutes we’ve got a guest DJ dropping some of his fave tunes for you to nod your head to. Mr Colin Levett. We spent the afternoon in his music “Bunker” listening to music and he did a 2 hr live mix for us. Here’s a few words from him about his start in Djing… “Started djing the local youth club in 85… 86-87 local pubs & first major gig for me was The Hadleigh Suite in 87… hip hop & 70’s funk breaks… Dj’d clubs like High Society/Blue Boar/Penthouse/Saks/Chesters/Fat Sams/Pink Toothbrush… Moved into house music at about 89 looking for the friendlier vibe. Loved it ever since… Played quite a few of the various clubs in & around Southend. A major highlight for me was playing at Bobbi & Steve’s Garage City in London. Worked at Soulman Records in about 1996ish… One of the best independent dance music shops in the South east at the time. Always been a fan of the more soulful/disco/boogie edged flavour & heavily into the Nu Disco/Re-Edit culture of late… You can check my Mixcloud page.. Colin E Levett (Levettski)…” Hope you enjoy the mix… Completely on the fly… Live!
