A (relatively) in-depth analysis of English singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole in under thirty minutes.Cole was the lead vocalist of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions from 1984 to 1989. Since then he has enjoyed a prolific solo career with his first album 'Lloyd Cole' being released in 1990.'Downtown' from his first album was featured in the 1990 film Bad Influence. 'Pay for It' from Cole's 1991 album 'Don't Get Weird on Me Babe' was also featured on the soundtrack of When the Party's Over. In 2023, Cole released his twelfth album 'On Pain', featuring songs recorded in his attic (which brings to mind the first line of the 1982 Adrian Gurvitz hit 'Classic). Quand on regarde certaines émissions de télés françaises, et même belges, nous décrire de manière caricaturale les années 80, je me demande où j'ai pu passer ces dix fameuses années parce que franchement je n'ai, à cette époque, pas vu beaucoup de monde, avec un rubik's cube tout le temps en main ou encore une cassette et un crayon, si vous voyez ce que je veux dire. Et encore moins habillés comme ils nous le disent. C'est vrai, dans la rue, on croisait peu de ces tenues fluos et moulantes comme dans l'émission Gym Tonic, un serre-tête sur le front, sauf Bjorn Borg à Roland Garros ou Mark Knopfler sur scène avec Dire Straits, et enfin des brushings d'un mètre cube à la Tina Turner et Bon Jovi.Alors oui, ok, y avait des brushings, mais c'était genre Sarah Connor dans Terminator, et pour les filles bien sûr, pas pour les mecs comme Van Halen ou The Police. Non, nous la mode, c'était plutôt le registre des pulls Lacoste jaunes et roses, ceux que les Gonzague portaient pliés sur les épaules, parce que ça faisait plus chic. Ou les T Shirts et Sweat Shirts Best Montana ? Ils allaient très bien avec les Nike Dunk hautes rouges ou bleues, ah ben ouais, on laissait les Reebok blanches pour des tenues plus habillées. Bref, nos années 80 sont plutôt passées à regarder des films VHS du vidéoclub, des clips à la télé et à écouter la radio libre ou des cassettes chrome qu'on se faisait grâce aux disques empruntés à la médiathèque. Ah il fallait ça ! Car si dans les années 70, toutes les conversations d'ados tournaient autour de quelques groupes et artistes, dans les années 80, on entendait sans arrêt prononcer des noms qu'on ne connaissait pas et pas toujours parce que c'étaient des nouveaux venus. Ah bon ? Et ils ont déjà fait deux albums ? Normal, on n'avait jamais vendu autant de disques, alors les labels signaient de plus en plus d'artistes. Et d'où en sortait-il le plus ? De Grande-Bretagne, évidemment. Ce n'est pas un hasard, c'est le pays où les artistes chantent tous les samedis et vendredis soir, ça joue live dans les pubs. Et encore plus dans les villes universitaires où le taux de jeunes au m2 est le plus élevé du pays. Ainsi de la ville de Glasgow où l'étudiant en philologie anglaise et philosophie Lloyd Cole compose et enregistre, un week-end de l'été 1984, une cassette dans le sous-sol du club house d'un golf, en fait c'est là que travaillent ses parents et c'est là qu'ils vivent. Et ben, pour vous prouver ce que je vous disais, une cassette par la poste et voilà déjà son groupe Lloyd Cole & The Commotions signé par une firme de disques et un premier album sorti en octobre. On les a immédiatement adoptés, leurs deux premiers albums ont illuminé une partie de nos nuits du milieu des années 80, avec ce petit quelque chose d'Américain qu'ont les British dans leur musique pop et qu'ils mettent au four, à leur sauce. Chouchou des radios libres et des compiles 33 Tours sponsorisées par une marque ou pas, on en a bouffé du Lloyd Cole sans trop savoir qui il était sinon qu'il faisait rêver les filles de notre génération.

We're back, and this time we've gone back 4 whole decades to talk about our favourite songs from 1984, including lots of jazzy indiepop, metal (from extreme to hair), german pop, and the mystery of whether Lionel Richie or Prince's girlfriend keep phoning Rockwell.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. The Feeling Sound Podcast Season Three - Episode Five Raised in Glasgow and now living in the city of Toronto, guitarist Neil Clark played with many bands in his original home city, including Newspeak with Alan McGee and Andrew Innes, before meeting Lloyd Cole and Blair Cowan, with the three forming the nucleus of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.  They recorded three studio albums, Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces and Mainstream, and Neil was co-writer of some of the groups best-known songs - Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken, Rattlesnakes and Lost Weekend, while also playing the multi-layered guitar coda to Forest Fire.  He has remained a regular collaborator with Lloyd Cole over the years, including contributions to his past two albums Guesswork and On Pain. In addition to his work with Cole, he has recorded with many other artists internationally. Recent projects include Lake and Sea with singer Theresa McKay, post-jazz trio Clark, Jones and Pottie and the solo album, Sundogs.- all of which can be found at neilclark.bandcamp.com. We caught up with Neil at his Toronto home, where we talked about his incredible musical journey, the stories behind some of the tunes that make up the phenomenal Commotion's back catalogue, touring … and above all else, what music means to him.

Le 27 mars 2019, Geoffrey Sella publie un message sur les réseaux sociaux : « Clap de fin. Après consultation d'un neurologue, je suis forcé de m'arrêter pour plusieurs mois avant une reprise éventuelle et progressive du rugby. ». A ce moment-là, il ne le sait pas encore, mais il ne reprendra jamais sa carrière de rugbyman professionnel, entamée 4 ans plus tôt à Massy. A 26 ans, victime de graves séquelles suite à des commotions cérébrales répétées, il lui est désormais impossible de jouer au rugby.Passé par Biarritz, avant de rejoindre en 2015 le club de Massy, Geoffrey Sella avait fait du rugby sa vie, comme son père avant lui, Philippe Sella, légendaire centre du XV de France dans les années 80. Depuis 2017, il évoluait même en Pro D2, la deuxième meilleure division du rugby en France. En pleine Coupe du monde de rugby, les commotions cérébrales provoquées par les violents chocs sont devenus un enjeu de santé public. À répétition, elles peuvent avoir de graves répercussions sur le cerveau au quotidien et l'aptitude des joueurs de rugby à anticiper les actions à mener pendant un match. Un traitement développé par deux médecins français semble très prometteur. Philippe Sella est l'un des joueurs de rugby les plus connus. Aujourd'hui retraité, il a été sélectionné plus de 100 fois en équipe de France au cours de sa carrière. Les commotions liées à des chocs pendant les matchs, il sait ce que c'est. « La plus grosse commotion, c'est sur mon premier match international. Là, je ne me souviens de rien. C'est-à-dire que je ne me souviens même plus de ce que j'ai fait le matin de la rencontre. Le match était à 15 heures, et je me suis réveillé à 22 heures. »Parfois, les commotions provoquent seulement quelques instants de trouble chez les joueurs. Pendant longtemps, elles ont été sous-évaluées, les joueurs préférant même ne pas en parler pour ne pas quitter le match. « Je n'ai jamais demandé à sortir, c'est cette idée d'être dur sur le terrain. Aujourd'hui, il y a ce côté d'observation plus précise, de telle sorte que s'il y a le moindre doute sur un joueur, il sort. » Car le risque en continuant à jouer avec une commotion, c'est d'être moins attentif, moins réactif, multiplier les chocs et donc les lésions dans le cerveau. « S'il y a un mal à la tête, s'il y a une fatigue, des troubles attentionnels, il faut absolument arrêter le joueur jusqu'à ce qu'il y ait une récupération totale, avant de recommencer par palier la reprise de l'activité physique, si tout s'est bien passé », explique Jean-François Chermann, neurologue et spécialiste du sport.Une technologie développée par deux FrançaisAvec le docteur Philippe Malafosse, ils ont mis en place un traitement pour que les joueurs victimes de commotion se rétablissent plus vite et plus efficacement. Une étude vient de confirmer les bénéfices de cette nouvelle prise en charge. « Il s'agit d'un casque que l'on met sur le crâne avec des modules qui délivrent un laser infrarouge et une lumière proche infrarouge, et une autre étude qui avait plusieurs objectifs, dont le premier était de montrer qu'il n'y avait pas de danger, pas d'effets secondaires, ni d'intolérance. Nous avons démontré que sur les 50 joueurs qui ont eu 100 séances de photobiomodulation, nous n'avons aucun effet secondaire, donc une tolérance parfaite. Le cas le plus flagrant qu'on ait eu, c'est quelqu'un qui était tellement touché du point de vue commotion, qu'il est venu accompagné à la consultation, et il a pu partir tout seul en voiture », précise Philippe Malafosse.Cette technologie développée par le Français RegenLife permet aussi d'éviter les effets secondaires des commotions sur le long terme. « Si on les soigne rapidement, ils peuvent mieux récupérer et on peut donc éviter l'effet cumulatif des commotions, pour éviter in fine les commotions chroniques et tous les syndromes neurodégénératifs dont on entend parler, qui surviennent 15 à 20 ans après la fin de la carrière » ajoute Philippe Malafosse.Un traitement prometteur qui ne s'adresse pas qu'au rugby même, mais à tous les sportifs fréquemment confrontés aux chocs, comme les footballeurs ou encore les handballeurs.À lire aussiAprès une commotion cérébrale, « le repos est fondamental pendant 48 heures »

Lloyd Cole's career began with the Commotions and over the last four decades has traversed the worlds of rock, pop, and ambient and electronic music--places from which Cole draws for his latest album, On Pain. Cole joins us to discuss the album and perform a live acoustic set in our studio.

Continuando con la línea de podcast anteriores, he creado una lista de canciones de artistas Indies o Alternativos de los 80s, algunos muy conocidos y otros que se han convertido con los años en grupos de culto. Como canción principal he seleccionado la maravillosa canción de los Echo & The Bunnymen que da título al podcast. Como bien dije, arrancamos con los Bunnymen y su preciosa “Bring on The Dancing Horses” publicado en Octubre del 85 como single y formando parte del grandes éxitos de aquel año “Songs to Learn & Sing”. Una preciosa melodía melancólica con toques de psicodelia convirtió el single en uno de los más vendidos del grupo. The Waterboys y su “The Pan Within” el cual no fue nunca single pero con el tiempo llego a convertirse en una de las canciones favoritas de los seguidores de Mike Scott y compañía. Este tema pertenece a su tercer álbum “This is the sea” su disco más exitoso y épico publicado en 1985. The La’s y su (único) gran single “There She Goes”. Originales de Liverpool, comenzaron en 1984, publicaron solo un disco en 1990 y todos coinciden que fueron unos de los precursores del BritPop que revoluciono el Reino Unido entre 1994 y 1997. Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, “Jennifer She said”. Originales de Glasgow, estuvieron en activo entre el 84 y el 89. Lloyd Cole continuaría con una carrera solista con más de 10 álbumes publicados. Oficialmente no se publicó como single, aunque existen algunas copias como tal, una tirada pequeña que se lanzó en Alemania. The Woodentops, “Good Thing”. Originales de Londres, publicaron discos entre 1985 y 1988. Good Thing es un sensillo que pertenece a tu segundo álbum “Giant” (1986) . Lanzaron algunos singles de moderado éxito en las islas y parte de Europa. Con un sonido que a muchos puede recordar a The Housemartins. Everything But The Girl, "When All's Well”. Grupo de origen Indie Pop con toques de Jazz, pasando por el Pop ochentero y acabando como una banda de electrónica en los 90s, pero siempre conservando su sello independiente. La canción se editó como single en 1985 muy influenciado por el sonido de gitarras de los Smiths. The Housemartins, “Bow Down”. Una de sus canciones más bonitas, que no se llegó a lanzar con single, pertenece al segundo y último disco de la banda, publicado en 1987. Poco tiempo después anunciaron su disolución. Como dato curioso, uno de sus integrantes, el que tocaba el bajo, no era otro que Norman Cook, más conocido por Fatboy Slim. Modern English, "I Melt with You”. Grupo inglés de New Wave, comenzaron en 1977 y continúan realizado giras por el Reino Unido. La canción es su mayor éxito hasta la fecha, publicado en 1982. The Essence, “Only For You”. Formación original de Rotterdam (Holanda), comenzaron en 1984 y a mediados de los 90s publicaron su último disco. Como dato decir que es muy evidente la influencia de The Cure, sobretodo la forma de cantar de Hans Diener recuerda mucho a Robert Smith. The Cure, “Lovesong”. Y hablando de Robert Smith y compañía. Single extraído de su exitoso y magnifico álbum “Disintegration” (1989). The Psychedelic Furs, “Heaven”. Single extraído de su álbum “Mirror Moves” de 1984 Primal Scream, “Velocity Girl”. Single inédito, publicado en el recopilatorio de artistas emergentes de la revista NME en 1986. Peter Murphy, “Cuts You Up”. El ex líder de Bauhaus comenzó su carrera solista al disolverse el grupo, publicando muy buenos discos en los 80s. Esta canción pertenece a su tercer álbum “Deep” publicado en 1989. Héroes del Silencio, "Héroe De Leyenda (Versión Maxi)". Grupo español de Rock Alternativo, influenciado por el Post-Punk y la New Wave. Logrando gran éxito en países como Alemania durante la década de los 90s. este tema, en versión extendida, pertenece a su EP homónimo lanzado en 1987. The Chameleons, “Tears”. Grupo de culto, originales de Middleton. Single de 1986, perteneciente a su disco “Strange Times”. The House Of Love, "I Don't Know Why I Love You”. Grupo Londinense de Rock Alternativo, con varios discos publicados entre los 80s y los 90s. Su mayor éxito fue esta canción, publicada como single en 1989. The Mighty Lemon Drop, "Inside Out (12'' Version)". Banda inglesa de Post-Punk muy influenciada por Echo & The Bunnymen. En activo entre 1985 y 1993.
