Hard work can pay off. Just ask Elisa Bee. The Sardinian producer and DJ has been working diligently since 2007, exploring and then refining a style of techno that has that rare, hard-to-put-your-finger-on quality: a soulful reverence, paying homage to the old days and the originators without just copying them. She struck it (relatively) big with an EP on Unknown To The Unknown in 2019 and has since become a fixture on labels like Hardgroove, Symbiosis and Balkan Vinyl, imprints that specialize in a kind of meat-and-potatoes techno that underlines both the fundamentals and subtle innovation. She's also a resident at Milan's Tempio Del Futuro Perduto, which she talks about at length in the interview below. Now, in 2023, Elisa Bee is part of a vanguard of younger techno producers who carry the flag for the '90s without resorting to pastiche or the bigger-is-better aesthetic of much of the rest of the contemporary European techno landscape. Her RA Podcast is as buttery smooth as it is propulsive, flying through tracks from like-minded artists like Austin Ato, Nocow and Black Girl/White Girl. DJ producer, record collector, dance columnist and music explorer made in Naples and based in Rome, Villanis is a fresh face on the Disco scene, spreading good vibes since 2012. Throughout nearly a decade of activity in music, Villanis has toured Italy and played prestigious venues in Europe such as Hi Ibiza, Privilege (Spain), Perkins Park in Stuttgart (Germany) and Hard Rock Cafes among the others. Strongly influenced by the 80s “imaginarium”, He had dived deep into the French Touch scene before getting hardly “hit” by the Discoball. He blends together feel good rhythm, groovy attitude and sunset coolness. In his musical production, the Future Disco re-edit of Rick Astley's 80s hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up” and the Rainbow Team's ReWork of “Let 'em be”, "Love Me" and one of the Nu-Disco hits of summer 2021 "Soaked In Sweat”, included in the most important Nu-Disco playlists of the season. He is resident DJ on the London-based Crate Digs Radio, on the French Yellow Radio and on Magic Malta 91.7FM. Playfully bringing the deep grooves to the underground and the pumping house to the big rooms, Glasgow’s Austin Ato has seen his profile rise over the past two years. Initially releasing on the taste-maker Phonica's white-label imprint, showcasing a blend of live keys and drums with exquisite sampling, he then created a blazing 12” of loopy, disco and drum machine house for Man Power’s Me Me Me label. This immediately put him on our radar, and we've supported ever since. His music comes in many forms, be it afrohouse on Defected with "Oh Mama" or making some Detroit and Chicago influenced tunes for Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company with 'Drip' and 'Heat' from the EP named after the latter. His DJ sets have led him to play many of the best parties in the UK from Percolate with Daphne and Floating Points, to Horsemeat Disco and Karizma. Having evolved from the enigmatic Drums of Death, our man Ato has a diverse ear, and a knowledge of what makes a groove. We're keeping it local with our latest guest mix from fellow Londoner Mark Hume. We've known Mark for years now and regularly cross paths on the London circuit whether at one of his Cadillac Soundsystem parties or via the Netil radio crew. We've always been a fan of his selections so thought we'd get him in for a spin in the SB mix series knowing full well he'd provide some delicious summery goodness with just the right amount of vintage flavours. Ever the master of reinvention Austin Ato has more than a trick or two held up his crafty sleeve. Colin's latest alias first emerged back in 2016 before going on to release two strong, singular EP's on both Phonica White and Futureboogie. His music is a subtle blend of colourful house, layered with percussion and intricate samples which send us back to the nostalgic days of Chicago and bygone dancefloors. As a disc jockey he is well versed, he is able to draw upon a wealth of experience and knowledge learnt across a fruitful career which has seen him travel and play at clubs around the world. A familiar face to some, a new candidate for others, Austin Ato is one to watch as he breathes new life. We are delighted to welcome him to our expansive mix series ahead of his appearance at Love Saves The Day later this year. @austin-ato
