First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump/Elon's abject refusal to follow court orders, the release of the White House Ethics Czar, the repeal of a ban on bribing foreign officials, the DOJ dropping its case against Eric Adams in an open case of blackmail, Trump's gutting of the CFPB, Oregon Nurses' ongoing labor battle, IRS and ICE, Mike Johnson's Budget, and Hegseth's revival of Fort Bragg, before diving a little deeper into the open insanity of the ongoing collusion between Eric Adams and the Trump Regime. Gil Duran then joins, diving right into the concept of the Network State – an idea advanced by Big Tech's thought leader Curtis Yarvin and his billionaire buddies (Thiel, Andreessen, Musk, etc) that Tech CEOs should take advantage of the collapse of Nation States and democracy in favor of establishing corporate, CEO-run dictatorship, either by gutting and replacing existing governments or purchasing sovereign territories – as Duran unpacks his first introduction to this ideology with Silicon Valley's attempt to hijack San Francisco's political institutions, before parsing a little deeper through the recent, much more public discussions of this theory advanced by the likes of Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and Curtis Yarvin. After expanding on how we are already seeing the blueprint for a Network State in action, with Trump serving as a figurehead to a Tech CEO's gutting of our administrative and democratic institutions in favor of sycophants and centralized power, Duran looks to how this came to be the active ideology of the GOP so quickly, unpacking how the collapse of the Biden campaign and naming of JD Vance as Trump's VP opened up an opportunity for the Big Tech to step in, starting with Elon's massive public $300m investment and culminating in Yarvin's Reboot conference in San Francisco last September, exploring the obvious parallels between Big Tech's dictator obsession and the GOP's white nationalism and parsing through their unified scapegoating of “woke” and “DEI” in the leadup to the election to the point of completely dominating both mainstream and social media (bolstered by the financial leverage and ownership Big Tech has over those institutions). Next, Gil, Sam, and Emma unpack the major challenges facing the Trump-Musk regime, as Trump is on his last legs with no other favorable alternative in sight while any failure to maintain control over both political and media institutions potentially meaning a complete upending of their “progress,” not to mention the obvious lack of preparedness (or ability) for this institution to deal with any real public or institutional opposition – the latter of which seems to be particularly hopeless among Democratic leadership – wrapping up by emphasizing the genuine insecurity this regime faces in the face of public scrutiny and touching on the potential danger of Big Tech's goal of replacing the US Dollar with Bitcoin. First, Emma runs through updates on the DOJ's restriction on Elon & Cronies' access to Treasury data, skyrocketing union membership among federal employers, Musk's access to Health Payment Systems, cuts to the FAA and the destruction of USAID, the trickle of opposition from Democrats, Trump's intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza, Trump's ban of trans girls and women from athletic competition, US birthright citizenship, global warming, and brutal jail riots out of Congo, before diving a little deeper into the absurdly creepy stunt Trump attempted to pull with signing his most recent anti-trans legislation, and the violently inhumane response from the likes of Jesse Watters. Professor Allison Pugh then joins, diving right into the recent mass proliferation of Artificial Intelligence across industries, and the dangerous encroachment it has initiated on what Pugh has dubbed “Connective Labor” – occupations where the literal act of a human seeing another human for who they are is the underlying engine for the valued outcome for the consumer, be it education, healthcare, hairdressers, sales, securities, and on – pushing society, with help from growing feelings of alienation, into a depersonalization crisis. After briefly expanding on the extension of this intrusion of AI into necessarily interpersonal roles, Professor Pugh looks at how the AI takeover over this work has been driven by this “Moneyball”-esque, Venture Capitalist, industrial-model of efficiency stripping back entire professions to emphasize data collection and output over the actual labor (and human connection) at hand, often resulting in the full-scale degradation of these jobs. Allison and Emma also touch on the AI industry's insistence on selling you their product as a replacement for either a more practical social alternative, human labor, or human connection, before wrapping up the interview with the overwhelming issue of Big Tech's complete capture of our information networks, be they communications platforms, databases, or (now) academia, and what it will take to push humanity back to doing their own critical thinking. Zachary Foster and Emma then jump right into Trump's recent declaration of intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza under U.S. control while sitting beside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, touching on the stunning revelation of the White House's seeming internal numbers on the total Gazan death count (around 500k) as well as the ongoing struggle to survive outside of conflict in Gaza. On this edition of Parallax Views, San Francisco-based journalist Gil Duran, a former communications director for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein & Kamala Harris (during her time as Attorney General), joins the show to discuss the big tech oligarchs backing Donald Trump, JD Vance, and MAGA this election season and their strange, science fiction-sounding techno-authoritarian vision for America. Gil Duran recently wrote two pieces in The New Republic that will form the basis for this conversation. The first, "Where J.D. Vance Gets His Weird, Terrifying Techno-Authoritarian Ideas", deals with JD Vance and the figure of Mencius Moldbug aka Curtis Yarvin, both of whom have a conneciton to Peter Thiel. Moldbug/Yarvin, for the uninitiated, is a key figure in the formation of what's come to be known as "Neo-Reaction" (NRx). Yarvin has promoted many ideas over the years, including the creation of corporate-controlled sovereign "realms" such as an imagined version of San Francisco called "Friscorps". These realms would essentially serve as panopticon-esque Orwellian surveillance systems. For example, in regard to his concept of Friscorps, Yarvin writes: “All residents, even temporary visitors, carry an ID card with RFID response. All are genotyped and iris-scanned. Public places and transportation systems track everyone. Security cameras are ubiquitous. Every car knows where it is, and who is sitting in it, and tells the authorities both.” We'll delve into Yarvin's ideas about patchworks, his strange writings about using humans as biodiesel fuel, and, most importantly, how his RAGE (Retire All Government Employees) plan bears similarties to Project 2025. And yes, as previously mentioned, we'll discuss how both Vance and Yarvin are tied to Peter Thiel. The second article, also from The New Republic, that informs much of Gil and I's discussion is entitled "The Tech Baron Seeking to Purge San Francisco of 'Blues'". That piece deals with the figure of venture capitalist Balaji Srinivasan and his rather right-wing, techno-authoritarian vision for San Francisco vis-a-vis a concept called the Network State. We'll delve into Srinivasan's ideas about the Network State as well as a concept he refers to as "techno-Zionism" and the conflict between what he calls the gray tribe (tech-loyalists) and the blue tribe (liberal voters). According to Duran, Srinivasan's vision involves purging Blues from San Francisco. “Take total control of your neighborhood. Push out all Blues. Tell them they're ... unwelcome,” Srinivasan says, "Just as Blues ethnically cleanse me out of San Francisco, like, push out all Blues.” We'll dissect exactly what Srinivasan meant by that and much more. Additionally, Gil and I will delve into why these figures are fascinated by the figure of French philosopher Rene Girard and his writings on the scapegoat mechanism of mimetic theory, how these figures are influenced by the controversial legal theorist Carl Schmitt (who worked for the Nazis under Hitler's Third Reich) and Schmitt's concept of the Sovereign and the State of Exception, and much, much more. In other words, you'll be hearing episode pulling the curtain back on the Silicon Valley/venture capitalist right-wing in California and America more broadly.

Those of you who've followed the podcast for any length of time know that I feel our capacity to connect across long distances, to share ideas in real time, is one of the things that has shifted our culture from being complex to super-complex, or hyper-complex, or whatever adjective we want to create that intimates a massive increase in the complexity of our communications and our actions. One key part of this is the evolution of blockchain, particularly in its Ethereum incarnation. Most of us know blockchain, if we know it at all, as the core of Bitcoin, but it's progressed far beyond this in the last decade, not only in the core technology, but in the thinking around it. Once, a libertarian playground, there is now a whole infrastructure of interconnected mycelial webs of progressive, regenerative communities who are building on and with Ethereum. I know this can often feel as if it's not part of our world - and it isn't an integral part - yet - in the way mobile phone technology is, or Zoom, or using a banking app, or a meditation app, or measuring your blood glucose in real time... but it's going to be a part of things in the same way these are soon. In the same way mobile phones became indispensable, I think some of the experiments in smart contracts and ways of hooking up currencies are going to become integral to our lives. And even if I'm wrong, there are a few certainties: The old paradigm is crumbling; the superorganism has to be dismantled; we do need to learn to live more regeneratively, connected more deeply to ourselves, each other and the web of life. And it's this connection that inspires our guest today. Josh Dàvila is host of one of my must-listen podcasts, Blockchain Socialist, where he, often joined by Primavera de Filipi hold fascinating, deep, thoughtful conversations that take me right to the edge of my understanding so that I have to listen to each episode three or four times to really get to grips with the ideas. Josh is also an author. His book 'Blockchain Radicals: How Capitalism Ruined Crypto and How to Fix It' is essential reading for anyone who's remotely interested in this space. Like Diana Finch in last week's episode, he has the capacity to take mindbendingly complex ideas and render them straightforward and even obvious - and in Josh's case, he's rendering social concepts of how our culture is run and how we can change it, in parallel to the evolution of blockchain, the nature of Ethereum and what can be done with it. And then he and Primavera are right in the middle of a whole host of conversations about the concept of Coordi-Nations - which are what I would have called communities of passion and purpose, as opposed to communities of place (though there's nothing to stop a community of passion and purpose arising in a specific geographic location. In the end, I think that's likely to happen). But we're getting ahead of ourselves: If I'm right that 2024 is the year when the tipping points become obvious even in the mainstream, then we need the ideas that will shift us out of business as usual and into new ways of being.
