I'm super excited to bring you this conversation with Tyson Allred. Tyson is the founder of Copper John's, a natural men's grooming and beard care brand. He is also half of the team that makes up Dad Bods and Beards (hey, I have both of those!), which is a community and podcast centered around positive portrayals of masculinity and the acknowledgment of the work it takes to overcome some of the more toxic elements of being socialized male (hmm...sounds familiar?) Tyson and his partner Logan do it from a whiter, straighter lens, which I think might move the needle in Red America a little more than I might be able to. Tyson and I discuss everything from body positivity to cold plunges to work/life balance to the mission of Dad Bods and Beards--stuff we usually cover on this pod, but the experiences of our guests make these topics unique to every episode, and my chat with Tyson is no exception. We also chat a little bit about my queer journey, and give the DBAB team props for being allies (which I imagine is not easy to do when you're Mormon and in Utah). I hope you enjoy our conversation. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

America is separating into two nations with two different experiences of reality itself: Red America and Blue America. As Robert Talisse, Vanderbilt University political theorist and today’s Utterly Moderate podcast guest, writes: “[O]ur everyday social environments are increasingly segregated along partisan lines. It is no exaggeration to say that in the United States today, opposing partisans live in different social worlds. For example, liberals and conservatives live in different kinds of neighborhoods, shop at different stores, purchase different products, drive different vehicles, express different aesthetic preferences, work in different occupations, and form different kinds of family groups. They eat different foods. They understand words differently and even exhibit different patterns of pronunciation. The familiar narrative of ‘red’ and ‘blue’ states goes far deeper than geography. In the United States today, political affiliation is more of a lifestyle than an outlook on the purposes of government.” Utterly Moderate host Lawrence Eppard has written about similar phenomena: the increasingly distinct epistemologies of left and right. On this episode of Utterly Moderate, Eppard and Talisse discuss the troubling state of polarization in America today, and how each of us might better ourselves in order to better our democracy. In this year's election, abortion protection measures were on the ballot in ten different states. While they succeeded in seven, they failed in three. So where does that leave the future of abortion access? This week, Preet speaks with University of Pennsylvania constitutional law professor and co-host of Strict Scrutiny Kate Shaw. They break down the most notable ballot measures and what abortion rights may look like under a second Trump presidency. Stay Tuned in Brief is presented by CAFE and the Vox Media Podcast Network. But the story of how Ferrence loses and, more importantly, how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In essays focused on showing goats at the county fair, planting native grasses in the front lawn, the political power of poetry, and getting wiped out in an election, Ferrence offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes the way stories told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. In several ways, akin to the growing collective demographic of people who don't have children, the overlooked value of voter relevance & influence is too often dismissed by dominant political narratives. Tune in for this timely conversation with Matthew Ferrence, author of I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me: Essays on Rural Political Decay (West Virginia University Press, 2024). In 2020, Matthew Ferrence ran for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, in a deeply-red district, and lost quite badly. In his newest book, he reflects on this experience to explore how American political narratives refuse to recognize the existence and value of nonconservative rural Americans, and how losing offers insight into the political morass of our nation. In I Hate It Here, Please Vote for Me he offers a counter-narrative to stereotypes of monolithic rural American voters and emphasizes that the ways stories are told about rural America are a source for the bitter divide between Red America and Blue America. Tune in live or on-demand to learn more about the underpinnings of the US political landscape and the need to recognize overlooked nonconservative voters in rural America.

We begin by discussing the need for conservatives to focus on down-ballot races and other important action items that will determine whether we preserve red-state America regardless of what occurs at the top of the ballot. We're joined today by James Uthmeier, chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running the Florida Freedom Fund to prevent Florida from becoming California. He warns that Amendment 4 is the most radical abortion initiative in the country. It will codify abortion until birth with zero parental notification and no ability of the legislature to regulate any aspect of the procedure, health care provider, or clinic. The Left is using egregiously deceptive language to vote on poll-tested talking points rather than genuine lawmaking. This is why we must restrict the initiative petition process to preserve Red America. Likewise, James warns that Amendment 3 is the most open-ended marijuana legalization that will make it free to use in every corner of the state – public and private – and will result in turning the state into California. He notes that if conservatives only got on the playing field, we'd easily beat back both amendments.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We begin by tying together looser observations on the RNC and the impending Democrat switcheroo of Biden. I'm concerned that conservatives have not war-gamed a scenario of Democrats bringing on a fresh face in contrast to Trump's own image problems and fatigue from his age. We offer ideas for Republicans and Trump to strike while the iron is hot and actually indict Democrats on the key issues before Democrats make the switch. Finally, I discuss the fact that we need to focus on red states where we don't have to worry about losing to the Democrats and where there should be no clamor to water down our beliefs in exchange for the promise of electoral success. However, there is a looming threat of using ballot petitions to abolish primaries and institute rank-choice voting. They have successfully turned Alaska blue using this convoluted method. We must put effort and resources into red states before they permanently turn them into blue states.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Because from where I'm standing it certainly isn't most people in the country and certainly not the ones that live in the country or other small and out of the way places—   What other conclusions could you draw based on the total failure to deal with the massive train wreck and subsequent fire involving tens of thousands of gallons of highly toxic Poly Vinyl Chloride in East Palestine Ohio?   The wreck came on February 3rd and the entire Biden Administration has been in a train wreck ever since—nobody worse than Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg that at this point has basically disqualified himself from ever serving in government again—and I join the call for him to resign—as he has proven time and again, that he is not up to the job and in fact is totally incompetent in the role—   Case in point—he has, just like Joe Biden failed to go to the Ohio Pennsylvania line to even look at what happened or meet with the people in that small rural community that say their dogs and cats are dying—flocks of chickens are dying and the water smells like chemicals and has a rainbow sheen in the small creeks and waterways—in and around town—   Joe Biden flew off to Ukraine and Poland—dumping $200 Billion into the hands of the most corrupt government on earth in Kyiv before promising the leaders in Warsaw—that the United States will pay for and build a brand new Westinghouse nuclear power plant in that country—I will get back to that in a minute—   But lets talk about the thing Joe Biden likes to talk about sometimes—his whole of government approach—well let me be crystal clear—this looks more and more like a whole of government failure in Ohio   Yeah—as mom used to say action speaks louder than words—its been 20 days since the whole Norfolk Southern train came off the tracks—and so did any federal response to the spreading PR and environmental disaster—   By the way—where are all the Earth First tree huggers and bunny lovers that so hate fossil fuels? You would think that when the government torches about the most toxic form of plastic and produces a cloud so big it reaches tens of thousands of feet into the atmosphere—they might show up and say something—BUT NO,  the Global Climate Warming Change Cult crowd is too busy sipping latte's from Starbucks whilst complaining about capitalism on their Apple Mac Book Pros to be concerned about a bunch of hayseed Trump voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania—   I mean they voted for Trump so any mishap that hits them—they probably deserve, right?   Oh, speaking of President Trump, he did go to East Palestine and was greeted like a King—when in fact he appeared to be nothing more than a man of the people—    So what about Mayor Pete—the guy who earlier this week proclaimed that as the guy in charge of South Bend Indiana—he dealt with plenty of disasters over 8 years—I would guess he was probably talking about his poor leadership—but it was not clear—   What is clear is this—East Palestine is not a priority to Mayor Pierre either—in fact when asked by a Daily Caller reporter this week—he said he'd answered enough questions—and needed personal time—   So with Feeble Joe over kissing the ring of the President of Ukraine—and Mayor Pierre out on date night—and tired of answering questions—the whole Administration appears to be giving the proverbial middle finger to all of Red America—at least symbolically that is how it looks—    New polling says Americans are more excited about Feeble Joe running for re-election than President Trump doing it again—BUT you have to wonder if that's really true—because Trump is at home with ordinary people while Joe is usually at home in the basement—   By the way Mayor Pierre is finally going to Ohio—he will be there today—almost 3 full weeks after the whole thing began—not exactly Johnny on the spot—But at least he got some personal time—I'm guessing the townsfolk in EP will have plenty of personal things to say when he arrives—   And then the rest

The truth about America's second civil war

The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich

The Supreme Court's upcoming decision to reverse Roe v. Wade (an early draft of which was leaked Monday) doesn't ban abortions; it leaves the issue to the states. As a result, it will put another large brick in the growing wall separating Blue and Red America. Some say we're on the verge of a civil war, but that's not right. It won't be a formal secession (we tried that once), but a kind of benign separation analogous to unhappily married people who don't want to go through the trauma of a formal divorce. We are already quietly splitting into two Americas — one largely urban, racially and ethnically diverse, and young; the other largely rural or exurban, white, and older — each running according to different laws and with different sources of revenue. The split is accelerating. Red ZIP codes are getting redder and blue ZIP codes, bluer. Of the nation's total 3,143 counties, the number of super landslide counties — where a presidential candidate won at least 80 percent of the vote — jumped from 6 percent in 2004 to 22 percent in 2020.Surveys show Americans find it increasingly important to live around people who share their political values. Animosity toward those in the opposing party is higher than at any time in living memory. 42 percent of registered voters believe Americans in the other party are “downright evil.” Almost 40 percent would be upset at the prospect of their child marrying someone from the opposite party. Even before the 2020 election, when asked if violence would be justified if the other party won the election, 18.3 percent of Democrats and 13.8 percent of Republicans responded in the affirmative. Thanks for subscribing to my newsletter. If you're not yet a paid subscriber, please consider a paid or paid gift subscription. While Red states make it nearly impossible to get abortions, they're making it easier than ever to buy guns — even easier to carry concealed guns without a permit. They're suppressing votes. (In Florida and Texas, teams of “election police” have been created to crack down on the rare crime of voter fraud, another fallout from Trump's Big Lie.) They're banning the teaching of America's history of racism. They're requiring transgender students to use bathrooms and join sports teams that reflect their gender at birth. They're making it harder to protest; more difficult to qualify for unemployment benefits or other forms of public assistance; and almost impossible to form labor unions. And they're passing “bounty” laws — enforced not by governments, which can be sued in federal court, but by rewards to private citizens for filing lawsuits — on issues ranging from classroom speech to abortions to vaccinations.Blue states are moving in the opposite direction. Several, including Colorado and Vermont, are codifying a right to abortion. Some are helping cover abortion expenses for out-of-staters. When Idaho proposed a ban on abortions that empowers relatives to sue anyone who helps terminate a pregnancy after six weeks, nearby Oregon approved $15 million to help cover the abortion expenses of patients from other states. Maryland and Washington have expanded access and legal protections to out-of-state abortion patients. One package of pending California bills would expand access to California abortions and protect abortion providers from out-of-state legal action. After the governor of Texas ordered state agencies to investigate parents for child abuse if they provide certain medical treatments to their transgender children, California lawmakers proposed making the state a refuge for transgender youths and their families. Another California proposal would thwart enforcement of out-of-state court judgments removing children from the custody of parents who get them gender-affirming health services. California is also about to enforce a ban on ghost guns and assault weapons with a California version of Texas' recent six-week ban on abortion, featuring $10,000 bounties to encourage lawsuits from private citizens against anyone who sells, distributes or manufactures those types of firearms. Please remember to join me for tomorrow's Wealth and Poverty class The new separation extends even to government revenue. A little-noticed trend is toward a growing share of total government taxing and spending occurring in the states — thereby making Blue states (which are overall wealthier than Red states) more financially autonomous. For years, the inhabitants of Blue states have been sending more tax dollars to the federal government than they get back (in the form of federal assistance to the poor, education, social services, and infrastructure), while Red states have been sending Washington fewer dollars than they receive back. But the significance of this Blue state subsidy to Red states is declining as an ever-larger percentage of total federal and state taxes paid by the inhabitants of Blue states are being spent in such Blue States. (A record half of all government revenue is now raised and spent by state and local governments.)We're also seeing more coordination among Blue states. During the pandemic, Blue states joined together on policies that Red states rejected — such as purchasing agreements for personal protective equipment, strategies for reopening businesses as COVID subsided, even on travel from other states with high levels of COVID. (At one point, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut required travelers from states with high positivity rates — Arkansas, Florida, North and South Carolina, Texas, and Utah — to quarantine for two weeks before entering.)We are splitting more quickly than anyone imagined. But the split raises a host of questions. For one, what will happen to the poor in Red states, who are disproportionately people of color? “States rights” was always a cover for segregation and harsh discrimination. The poor — both white and people of color — are already especially burdened by anti-abortion legislation because they can't afford travel to a Blue state to get an abortion. They're also hurt by the failure of Red states to expand Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act; by Red state de facto segregation in public schools; and by Red state measures to suppress votes. One answer is for Democratic administrations and congresses in Washington to prioritize the needs of the Red state poor and make extra efforts to protect the civil and political rights of people of color in Red states. The failure of the Senate to muster enough votes to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, let alone revive the Voting Rights Act, suggests how difficult this will be. But Blue states have a potential role here. They should spend additional resources on the needs of Red state residents, such as Oregon is now doing for people from outside Oregon who seek abortions. They should prohibit state funds from being spent in any state that bans abortions or discriminates on the basis of race, ethnicity, or gender. California already bars anyone on a state payroll (including yours truly, who teaches at UC Berkeley) from getting reimbursed for travel to states that discriminate against LGBTQ people (as of now, that list includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia).Where will all this end? Not with two separate nations. What America is going through is less like a civil war and more like Brexit — a lumbering, mutual decision to go separate ways on most things but remain connected on a few big things (such as national defense, monetary policy, and civil and political rights). We'll still be America. But we're becoming two versions of America. The open question is analogous to the one faced by every couple that separates — how will we find ways to be civil toward each other? This is a public episode. Donald Trump has been, at least temporarily, defeated. Yet, as the events of January 6th have demonstrated, his followers are far from being broken. Indeed, many still cling on to the belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen by a cabal of Democratic operatives and their Republican collaborators. In response to their failures on a national level, Trump Republicans, including former Trump advisor Steve Bannon, are waging a war on those they deem to have sold out their leader. This has been manifested in a renewed effort at grassroots organizing across small town America. The frontlines of this conflict are electoral precinct officers, town councils, law-enforcement, and school boards. How is this conflict playing out in small town America? What are the political battle lines being drawn with Republican dominated regions? We're all used to hearing about Red America and Blue America, but what if the country's real political divide is actually split along a four way fracture? On this edition of KCBS In Depth we speak with journalist and author George Packer about his new book, “Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal,” which seeks to map out the lines of political division that run through the nation as a first step toward patching it all back together.  Host:Keith Menconi See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The senior senator from Montana discusses the challenges facing Democrats as they try to convince red state voters to go green. The impacts of climate change are felt across the political spectrum, from the blue coastal cities contending with rising oceans to the red rural communities where drought and deluge upend growing seasons.  Yet convincing residents of America's more conservative areas has proved difficult for lawmakers seeking to stave off the worst effects of climate change.   Sen. Jon Tester knows all about this. As a Montana farmer contending with new pests, historic droughts and erratic growing seasons, he understands the impacts of climate change on rural communities. And he knows about the difficulties in selling climate policy because he is a three-term senator in a state where Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential contest by more than 16 points. He is also a Democrat.  For this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, recorded at the Crosscut Festival in early May, the three-term senator discusses the prospects of moving his conservative neighbors and his Republican colleagues toward government-devised climate solutions. --- Credits Host: Mark Baumgarten Event producers: Jake Newman, Andrea O'Meara Engineers: Chi Lee, Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph

Rob Henderson is one of the most interesting young thinkers active today. A writer with an engaging Twitter account and must-subscribe newsletter, he is perhaps most well known today for his popularization of the concept of “luxury beliefs.” My conversation with Rob occurred in the midst of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. I was looking for his perspective on the world, and the reality of American decline, because his own life story is so unique, and yet so American. Given up for adoption by a Korean mother with drug addictions, Rob was raised by a Korean American lesbian in relative poverty in Red Bluff, California. Red Bluff is in the heart of California's conservative and poor Central Valley. A very different California than the dreams of out-of-staters.

Challenging the Electoral College | More Senators have joined Senator Josh Hawley; about a dozen senators and dozens of representatives from the House are going to challenge electoral votes during the January 6 Joint Session of Congress. “America is a Republic whose leaders are chosen in democratic elections. Those elections, in turn, must comply with the Constitution and with federal and state law,” a joint statement was released from the group. The group demands an Electoral Commission be established, with full investigatory and fact-finding authority for an emergency ten-day audit of election returns in the disputed swing-states. If America is becoming a socialist nation, then the telltale signs would be obvious in the 2020 election. We know how states like California, New York, and Illinois will vote in any election, but what if we take the popular vote from the remaining 47 states⏤what will that tell us? There is a struggle for the soul of the nation and it's being fought at the state level. Two different philosophies. One nation. 330+ million people. There are politicians that want to tell you what to drive, what to eat, and what your children read. They also want to rewrite your history by tearing down the symbols of your past. We will talk about the Red America and the Blue America today on the Voice of a Nation.  Jay Lehr, Ph.D. is a Senior Policy Analyst with the International Climate Science Coalition and former Science Director of The Heartland Institute.

However, you could also argue that democracy is messy. Even the kind of democracy that fits ever so nicely into a constitutional representative republic can be very messy. The challenge becomes when that messiness turns into outright fraud. Thievery at the highest order. The 2020 election is fraught with scandal. The fact is, Red America and Blue America no longer represent the United States of America. Fact is, we are the Divided States of America. Let's talk about the sanctity of the vote.

Listen to the Prayer Audio: Heavenly Father, we are here in Your Heavenly Court to seek a release of Your Holy Fire on our Nation to weed out and destroy the temples, altars and idols of evil that have infiltrated our nation. We stand before You in humble repentance for allowing this beak our covenant with You. We seek a breaking of all legal ties that the enemy has with us a complete decree of divorce from all ties with the enemy that we have either voluntarily or unknowingly been involved with. We seek a complete return to the covenant that was originally made to make America a land dedicated to You through Your Son, Jesus the Christ! In this moment that we are gathered here before You we give You our hearts and total commitment to You now. Lord, as this nation goes to the polls we commit ourselves to vote for Life and Righteousness through out the nation that only those You have shown us to be anointed for such a time as this to hold office now! Lord, we proclaim America is land for Your Kingdom and we want it ruled by those You have chosen for this hour! May You receive all the honor and thanksgiving for Your Holy Spirit moving across the land to bring an overwhelming victory for Your anointed! Praise You God for the victory is at hand! Father, during this time we are so grateful for the words that have been given to us by Your Prophets of this day that we will see a return to righteousness and law and order will be ours and those who interfere with You plans for us will be brought to shame and will face the Hammer of Justice to strike down any of their plots and schemes. Lord thank You for making more and more Americans aware of the evil that has held us captive for so long and the exposition of the liars and deceivers who have betrayed our trust. Lord, we are so grateful for what is coming with a tsunami of overwhelming decisions for a Red America, a land washed in the Blood of Yeshuah and setting us free to speak clearly the Truth and live in harmony with one another without any malice by race, color or other differences that we are one nation under God with Liberty and Justice for all! Father in the authority given to us by Your Son, Yeshuah, we bind the strong man and all those who have chosen to betray and teach hate of our nation that they be brought before the Tribunal of Justice and face all the consequences of their actions! Lord let You Holy Fire burn and consume all that they use as resources to fulfill their schemes. Let that Fire burn to ashes all their hopes and dreams of having their way of controlling us and making us slaves of a master plan of evil! That all of their hidden agendas and places of hiding be burned to ashes! That the Light blinds them from finding their way and they fall into the pit that they have dug for us. Like Haman of old may the gallows they have prepared for us be their own destruction and punishment they receive! Father we seek that the Holy Spirit blow a mighty rushing wind on all those who stand for righteousness and Justice move swiftly now to fulfill the agenda that President Trump has in place to bring down the deep state and all of the those who have been attempting to bring a coup in our land! Lord, this is that time for us to see the corrupt receive their just deserts! Father, we are here as Your Army to do our part in these days of our elections. We will run to the front lines to cover our votes and to ensure that law and order are our main concern and that we will see that peace and harmony reign in our land again! We are here Lord to do our part both in these moments of prayer and intercession but also by taking steps of action to fulfill our high calling as a nation, a holy people set apart to do Your Will! Unions recently took some hits in Republican states, but now teachers' strikes are pushing back and winning. Can unions still be influential in Red America, when they are mostly in the public sector? And are they out to defend their own interests or to play a broader social role? Laura Bucci finds that despite declines, unions still help reduce inequality across states—through policy and the labor market. But Daniel DiSalvo finds public sector unions are also leaving states with burdensome legacy costs, with even Republicans capitulating. In both cases, labor unions are still influencing our politics and economy even after big declines in the private sector. What drives voters to the election booth? Dr. Arlie Hochschild, UC Berkeley sociologist and author of New York Times best seller “Strangers in their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right,” embarked on a journey to the Deep South to explore this very question. What she found were lives damaged by lost jobs, poor wages and an elusive American dream. As she connected and became friends with the people she met, she was surprised to discover that their values mirrored the liberal values she grew up with, including a desire for community, the importance of family and hopes for their children. She came to appreciate how strongly emotions, including years of anger and frustration, drive political preference for many far-right voters. What role did “emotion in politics” play in the results of the 2016 election? What feelings motivate Trump supporters and Tea Partiers to support these movements? Why do citizens who would seem to benefit most from “liberal” government programs detest the party that passed them? Dr. Hochschild will share her observations and the stories of those who have felt like strangers in their own land.
