The StoryBrand framework is different than what we’ve traditionally done in the church world. Getting people to buy in that the people we’re trying to reach are the hero of our communications and not Jesus is a hard sell to many because many of us are programmed that Jesus is the hero of the story no matter what.In this episode we talk to a lead pastor who has made the leap into using StoryBrand for their church. We talk to him about what drew him to StoryBrand, what it was like to develop their BrandScript, and how it’s helped his church do ministry better. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Announcing events is something that most of us hate but we can’t get rid of. Tracking down the right information and then making that compelling takes more time an energy than it should. In this episode we talk to one church who has started requiring their ministries to submit a BrandScript to go along with their event promotion requests. We discuss what it’s been like to have ministry leaders do that, how they got them to buy in, and how it’s made their promotions and communications better. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Preaching or teaching the Bible is one of the highest callings a person can have. But we’ve all sat through sermons that may have been factually accurate but left us feeling bored. They’re the ones we end up checking Facebook 1000 times during. We have the greatest story ever told – the hope of Jesus – but if we can’t communicate it in a way that people connect with, we’re just wasting our breath. In this episode, we look at how you can use StoryBrand to preach your sermon. We also talk about what it’s like to create a BrandScript for an individual sermon and how to use that within your talk. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Having a clear, common language to use when communicating to your church makes your job easier and more effective. This week we talk about one-liners (4:09) and how you can use them to have a common language amongst your church (14:44). We also talk about how most announcements are unnecessary hype (5:16), why speaking into problems is important (11:22), and how a common language equips people to invite others to your church (15:45). Lastly, we get practice by BrandScripting VBS (7:26) and turning that Brandscript into a one-line you can use to motivate people to show up (9:31). See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We could have the greatest message in the world – and we do – but if we can’t lead well, people still won’t follow us. This week, we talk about how we can use StoryBrand to be better leaders (3:12). We'll dive into how people don't know what we're thinking (4:30) and how to determine what events/ministries we should be doing (6:12). We'll also look at how we can use the BrandScript to have better meetings (12:33) and will do a sample BrandScript for a hard conversation (14:18). Lastly, we'll look into how we can lead up and lead our supervisors (20:47) and how the StoryBrand Framework gives you a unifying language (26:05). See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week is all about Christmas! We ask if people even know what Advent is (3:20) and talk about the Christmas traditions we take for granted (4:20). We also create a BrandScript for Advent (8:50) and give you a templated video script to promote the season (17:42). Plus we try to determine if Kyler has ever read the Bible (23:20) and discuss how singing Silent Night to candle light is actually a little weird (29:46). Applying the StoryBrand Framework with J.J. Peterson - Chief of Staff - StoryBrand. This week on the Catalyst Sale Podcast we revisit StoryBrand and the StoryBrand Framework. This is one of my favorite discussions to date, and one that I think many of you will save and listen to multiple times. We even manage to get some "free consulting" out of J.J. on the podcast, and have applied his recommendations to our home page. Thank you J.J. Questions Addressed How has StoryBrand impacted what we are doing at Catalyst Sale? Why do we/Companies want to be the hero? Why do we feel like we have to fall back on feature functionality, rather than the customer story? Does the hero know what success or failure looks like at the beginning? How can we communicate better, and speak more plainly? Have you used the Starbucks test? How can you create magical moments in your customer experience? Key Takeaways StoryBrand - brand scripts at Catalyst Sale - when we consider new products or services, a StoryBrand brandscript is part of the process. Brandscript - how to talk to the customer in a way that illustrates what's important and helps them engage in the discussion. We know the people at parties who only talk about themselves, they annoy us. For some reason, we think we need to do this in sales, and ultimately it comes across as insincere. The Hero does not become the Hero until the end of the story. The Guide does not transform throughout the story. The Hero goes through an up-down-up-down cycle. Think of Mary Poppins - she is the guide, not the hero. The dad is the hero who goes through the hero's journey Features are about us, the benefit is about the customer. StoryBrand BrandScript - 6 things you need to address. # 1 - Identity who your character is (customer) - What do they want, and what do they want to be. # 2 - Identity what is the problem & what do they need to overcome. (position yourself as a brand that solves problems) # 3 - You have to position yourself as the guide. Do this through Empathy & Authority. # 4 - The Plan - "here's the plan" - your customer needs to see that there is a way forward. (don' t land on the feature, always land on the benefit) # 5 - Call to Action - what's the next step, no guessing # 6 - There are stakes - Success or Failure When you are talking about failure, you do not need to pile on. When it comes to success, talk about things in the context of short-term & long-term. People do not have time to think - if you make me think, you are going to lose me. Big words confuse people - think about this question "what is the benefit?" Starbucks test - 3 seconds, 3 questions What do we do? How does it make your life better? How can I get it? Create magical moments for your customers, focus on the details, deliver the experience. The story is not about you as a company - it is about the customer. No other framework has impacted my marketing, message, and business more than Donald Miller's StoryBrand framework. I first connected with Don in April 2016 when he contacted me to work with him on a book about the StoryBrand framework. That book is out now: Building A StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen (Amazon) Don joins me on this episode of the podcast to walk you through the entire 7-step framework. You'll also get unique insight into how we worked on this book and other key takeaways including: How Don pivoted from being a memoirist to launching StoryBrand and becoming The important marketing lesson Don learned from sitting next to a man reading his own book on a plane The single biggest shift you need to make in your marketing How the StoryBrand framework works in politics, and why Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the election How to create your very own BrandScript that keeps your marketing message on point The StoryBrand framework provides you with the ultimate competitive advantage, revealing the secret for helping your customers understand the compelling benefits of using your products, ideas, or services. Whether you are the marketing director of a multibillion dollar company, the owner of a small business, a politician running for office, or the lead singer of a rock band, Building a StoryBrand will forever transform the way you talk about who you are, what you do, and the unique value you bring to your customers.
