In today's world, clear communication feels increasingly challenging. With so many differences and divides among us, it's harder to express ourselves honestly and lovingly while being understood as we intend. This challenge is especially visible on social media, where misunderstandings often deepen the divisions between us. Scripture speaks profoundly to this struggle, particularly in the book of Acts, where the Holy Spirit empowers the disciples to communicate across divides. In the Christian tradition, we call this moment "Pentecost." This year, we celebrate Pentecost on June 8, 2025. It's a time to reflect on what the Holy Spirit accomplished then—and what the Spirit is calling us to do now to bridge the vast divides in our world. If you'd like to explore the Scripture passages mentioned in this episode, here's the list: Acts 2:1-12 Philippians 2:3-4 1 Corinthians 13:1 James 1:19 Luke 12:12 Galatians 3:28 John 13:35 We concluded the episode with this prayer: Holy Spirit, give us the words to bridge our divides, the patience to listen, and the love to unite us as your people. Amen. Guest Information Rev. Monica Humpal is the host of the Curious Living Podcast, an Associate Pastor at Williamson's Chapel United Methodist Church, and a master-certified life coach. Originally published on March 4, 2021. In this powerful encore episode of How to Live a Fantastic Life, we dive into a topic that doesn't get nearly enough attention—men, emotional vulnerability, and relationships. Our guest, Travis Belanger, shares his personal journey that began with a difficult divorce in the early 2000s and ultimately led him to a deeper understanding of self-awareness, emotional expression, and what it truly means to be a connected man. Travis now dedicates his life to helping other men rediscover their passion and purpose—not by hiding their emotions, but by embracing them. His mission is clear: to break down the outdated belief that “men don't talk” and instead, create spaces where men can open up, be vulnerable, and live more authentic, fulfilled lives. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in shifting the conversation around masculinity and emotional wellness. Guest Bio: Travis Belanger is a passionate coach, engaging speaker, and the founder of Men On Fire, a movement dedicated to helping men ignite their lives by reconnecting with their true selves. Through his transformational coaching and monthly Ignite Your Life Brotherhood gatherings, Travis creates powerful spaces for men to explore their inner world, build stronger connections, and redefine success on their own terms. After going through a painful divorce and experiencing repeated relationship struggles, Travis realized something vital was missing in his life. Always on the move and disconnected from his emotions, he eventually came to a turning point—a realization that true change had to start from within. His personal growth journey led him through books, mentorship, and self-discovery, and it transformed not only his life but his purpose. Today, Travis is on a mission to challenge societal norms that keep men emotionally closed off. He empowers them to step into their full potential by embracing vulnerability, fostering authentic relationships, and living with greater passion and purpose. Delight Your Marriage | Relationship Advice, Christianity, & Sexual Intimacy
If you have ever felt disconnected with your spouse- particularly in the area of communication- this episode is especially for you. Steven and his wife, Tracy, walked through more than two decades of disconnection. Twenty-five years is a long time to feel lost in your marriage. To feel like no matter what you try, you just can't find your way back to each other. They loved God. They were raising six children together. They wanted their marriage to thrive. But somehow, they kept missing each other. Their communication felt off, and it wasn't just about words—it was about how every part of their life as a couple felt misaligned. Marriage Problems After 25 Years: Feeling Stuck and Disconnected Steven and Tracy did what many couples in their situation try to do. They sought help. They met with counselors and pastors. They heard wise advice. But for some reason, it just didn't seem to stick in their day-to-day lives. They felt like they were doing all the right things, yet their relationship still felt strained. The alignment they hoped for—spiritually, emotionally, practically—kept slipping through their fingers. It's hard to describe how wearying that becomes over time. You start to wonder if it will ever change, or if you're destined to just live alongside each other, rather than truly enjoy the beauty of partnership that marriage is meant to be. Signs of Hope: When One Spouse Begins to Change What began to open things up wasn't what Steven expected. He started to notice a softness in Tracy. A new warmth in her communication. She seemed more open, more willing to engage in conversations in a way that felt safe and inviting. And that tenderness in her sparked something in him. He realized, deep in his heart, that he wanted to experience that same kind of shift. He didn't want to keep circling the same frustrations. He wanted his heart to change too—not just so things would feel better, but because he longed to love her well. There's something so beautiful about that. Sometimes, it's the gentle transformation in one spouse that awakens the hope in the other. And that's exactly what happened for Steven. How Focusing on Personal Growth Can Transform Your Marriage What truly began to move the needle for Steven was recognizing where his focus had been all along. For many years, like so many of us, he had been looking at his wife's responses, her choices, her attitude. But when he started to reflect more deeply, he realized the bigger breakthrough would come from within himself. That shift—from focusing outward to focusing inward—was a game changer. Instead of waiting for Tracy to change, he opened his heart to the changes God wanted to do in him. He began to see how his own patterns of thought and communication were shaping their dynamic. And as he leaned into that growth, the atmosphere of their marriage began to change. Learning to Communicate Better in Marriage Steven described it as learning to dance. For years, he and Tracy were moving to different rhythms. Even when they had good intentions, they kept stepping on each other's toes. When you don't know the steps, no matter how much you love the other person, the dance feels clumsy. Missteps are frustrating and discouraging. But as Steven grew in understanding and grace, he began to move in rhythm with his wife. He learned how to lead with humility and gentleness. And as he did, Tracy responded. She became more willing to follow his lead—not because she was forced to, but because it felt safe and loving to do so. Their dance transformed from awkward steps to something fluid, connected, and beautiful. Why Humility Is Key to a Stronger Marriage What I find so deeply inspiring about Steven's journey is the way he embraced humility. He didn't cling to pride. He didn't stay stuck in frustration, demanding that his wife change first. Instead, he knelt before God—both literally and figuratively—and opened his heart to being transformed himself. That posture of surrender made space for God to work powerfully in his life and marriage. And it's a reminder for all of us: no matter how broken things feel, when we choose humility and invite God into our hearts and homes, He begins to weave a story of redemption that's more beautiful than we could have imagined. What a Healthy Marriage Looks Like After Healing Today, Steven and Tracy still face challenges, but what's different now is how they handle them. What used to take days, weeks, or even months to resolve now takes minutes—sometimes even seconds. They've learned to recognize when they're drifting out of alignment and come back quickly to unity and connection. Their marriage isn't just surviving anymore. It's thriving. There's joy. There's intimacy. There's a deep excitement about what God is continuing to do in their relationship. It's a miracle of grace, truly. There Is Hope for Your Marriage, Too Friend, if you find yourself where Steven once was—tired, discouraged, wondering if things will ever change—I want you to hear this clearly: there is a way forward. Take courage. Let hope rise in your heart. Open yourself to the possibility that the story isn't over—and that the next chapter could be more beautiful than you've imagined. With love, Belah & Team PS - Want to know more about the current health of your marriage? PPS - Here is a quote from (another) recent graduate: “Tension between us is pretty much gone! Our relationship, our discussions have become much more peaceful, easygoing and playful than before. My wife has become more affectionate and has initiated intimacy more! We can now discuss physical intimacy and not argue. She has told me many times how she likes the changes she sees in me…Other people around us, even strangers, have noticed something different about us.”

1. Why Hannah describes her later-in-life Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis as “an exfoliation of shame.” 2. How neurodiversity affects Hannah's relationships–and how she connects to the world through what's “interesting” instead of what's “important.” 3. Hannah's revolutionary commitment to stop using self-deprecating humor about her body, sexuality, and gender–and why we might all consider the same commitment. 4. Why it's easier for Hannah to share her personal stories “in bulk” on stage instead of one-on-one. 5. What it takes for Hannah to prepare for conversations–like ours on We Can Do Hard Things. About Hannah: Tasmania's own Hannah Gadsby stopped stand-up comedy in its tracks with her multi-award-winning show, Nanette. When it premiered on Netflix in 2018, it left audiences captivated by her blistering honesty and her singular ability to take them from rolling laughter to devastated silence. Its release and subsequent Emmy and Peabody wins took Nanette (and Hannah) to the world. Hannah's difficult second album (which was also her eleventh solo show) was named Douglas after her dog. Hannah walked Douglas around the world, selling out the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Opera House in Sydney and the Kennedy Center in DC, a sit-down run in New York and shows across the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Douglas covered Hannah's autism diagnosis, moving beyond the trauma at the centre of Nanette and instead letting the world see the view from Hannah's brain – one that sees the world differently but with breathtaking clarity. The show was an Emmy-nominated smash hit and is available throughout the world on Netflix, recorded in Los Angeles. Hannah Gadsby's “overnight” success was more than ten years in the making, with her award-winning stand-up shows having been a fixture in festivals across Australia and the UK since 2009. She played a character called “Hannah” on the TV series Please Like Me and has hosted multiple art documentaries, inspired by her comedy art lectures. In 2022, Hannah's first book Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation was published by Ballantine, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in the United States, Atlantic in the UK, and Allen & Unwin in Australia. Hannah has done plenty of other things over the course of more than a decade in comedy, but that will do for now. The quote is, “The lines are painted wrong.” Who said that and what did this person mean? That was my Dad. He used to tell us that as kids. You see, my Dad took pride in his driving abilities, and when he would not park the straightest in a parking space, we kids would take great delight in pointing it out to him. His reply was always, “The lines are painted wrong.” Oddly enough, we LOVED this answer! We would argue back, “No they aren't! You parked crooked!” He would just shake his head, smile, and calmly insist, “The lines are painted wrong.” In my career as an industrial water treatment professional, this quote has always stuck with me. There are most certainly times when the lines are painted wrong. The control ranges may be wrong, too tight, or too broad. The lines are painted wrong. The expectations from a client or manager may be unrealistic. The lines are painted wrong. The finger often gets pointed at the water treatment professional first when things go wrong with water-related equipment, even when it's not our fault. The lines are painted wrong. While it would not have been appropriate for my Dad to repaint the lines in a parking lot, it can be appropriate for us to repaint the lines at times in industrial water treatment. Control ranges can be appropriately adjusted. Expectations can be diplomatically realigned. Blame can be diffused or redirected with listening, discussion, facts, and patience. Sometimes, it takes a little thinking outside the box to realize when the lines are painted wrong. I have my Dad to thank for helping me see this at such a young age, and I can't wait to tell him that now tens of thousands of people have just learned from him, too. Ding. Breaking news. Ding. New email. Ding. Whatsapp group. Ding. New email. Ding. Whatsapp again. Ding. Another email. Ding. Ding. Ding. Studies show that we have more information in our brains than almost anyone alive hundreds of years ago processed in their lifetime. And it feels like it, doesn't it? So we're receiving more information than ever before. And there are more ways than ever before to send it. But that doesn't mean we're any better at communicating it. That we're understanding it. Or feeling understood. Whether we're home or at work, getting communication right is important. It's the most sought-after soft skill in the job market, but for a ‘soft' skill it can be hard to master. So, what can we learn from the world's best communicators? And how can we apply it to our careers, our teams and our businesses? That's what we're exploring with Ros Atkins, BBC journalist and analysis editor, and Drew McMillan, Director of Communications and Engagement at Deloitte, in this episode of The Green Room as we ask: Can we communicate better by saying less? Tune in to find out: What Ros learned from Obama's former speech writer Why communicating well is more challenging than ever before A common mistake we all make when communicating at work One phrase that can make any message resonate Enjoyed this episode? Meet the Women Behind the WOW Committee This episode features insights from six trailblazing women who are not only leaders in their respective fields but also passionate advocates for the WOW mission: Stephanie Choury, Enterprise Account Manager at Buckman Digital Water Tammy Faber Sales Director of HOH Water Technology and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Paule Genest, Director of Sales and ESG, Water and Energy at TGWT Clean Technologies, Host of the Paule-Cast and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Michelle Lunn, Marketing Director of GLA Water Consultants & Director on the AWT Board Janice Shawl, President of AMSA, Inc. a specialty chemical manufacturing company Pam Simmons, National OEM Sales Manager, Watson Marlow What is Women of Water? WOW exists to welcome, highlight, and celebrate the contributions of women in AWT. Paule Genest articulates the mission clearly: “To encourage all the women working and thriving within the industry of water technologies to come forward and contribute their time and talents to the greater good.” WOW focuses on creating a thriving community where women can belong, elevate, and positively impact AWT. Mission of the WOW Committee The mission of the WOW Committee is clear: to promote the professional development and advancement of women in the water treatment industry. By providing education, networking opportunities, and a strong support system, the committee aims to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where all members can succeed. This mission not only benefits women but also strengthens the industry as a whole by encouraging fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Facing Challenges Head-On In every industry, women encounter unique challenges, and the water treatment sector is no exception. Pam Simmons, a dedicated member of the Women of Water (WOW) committee, sheds light on the obstacles women face and how the committee is striving to address them. Pam begins by acknowledging a reality that many women are all too familiar with the gender pay gap. According to the International Labor Organization, women globally earn about 20% less than men. This disparity is not just a number; it's a barrier that women must navigate throughout their careers. But the pay gap is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. There is also the issue of unequal opportunities, particularly in leadership. A 2022 report from Deloitte on women in the boardroom highlights that only 19% of boardroom positions are held by women. This underrepresentation speaks volumes about the challenges women face in advancing to leadership roles. For many women, the journey to the top is not just about breaking the glass ceiling; it's about finding the ladder to reach it in the first place. Career gaps present another significant hurdle. Whether its time taken off to have a baby or care for a family member, these interruptions can create substantial obstacles when women return to the workforce. Pam points out that these gaps can make it difficult for women to regain their footing and continue progressing in their careers. The struggle doesn't stop there. Navigating work-life balance is another challenge that resonates with everyone, regardless of gender, but it affects women in distinct ways. Pam reflects on how this delicate balance—or lack thereof—can leave a lasting impact on both personal and professional lives. The WOW committee is not just identifying these challenges—they are actively working to address them. Pam shares that WOW is committed to introducing resources and strategies to help women cope with these challenges. Through support, education, and community, WOW aims to empower women in the water treatment industry to not just survive but thrive. How is WOW Helping Women in the Water Industry? The WOW Committee is already making a significant impact. There are now three women on AWT's Board of Directors, the most ever in the organization's history. Stephanie Choury has seen firsthand how the inclusion of women has led to greater collaboration and innovation within the industry. She notes that the women on the Board feel they have a “seat at the table” and are making meaningful contributions alongside their male colleagues. WOW is also instrumental in providing mentorship and creating spaces for women to grow their knowledge, skills, and leadership roles. The Power of Mentorship Mentorship is central to the Women of Water (WOW) committee's mission, acting as a crucial tool for professional growth and community building. As the industry evolves, mentorship plays a key role in creating pathways for women in water treatment. Tammy Faber emphasizes the importance of mentorship, referencing Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg highlights that a mentor or sponsor can significantly boost career progression, yet women often lack such support. WOW addresses this gap by connecting seasoned professionals with newcomers. Tammy explains, “It's not just about an older professional helping a younger one; it's about leaning in and helping one another grow.” WOW has prioritized mentorship this year, especially with young professionals. Both mentors and mentees experience mutual growth, as Tammy shares: “The mentor-mentee relationship is so important because I can walk in a room and already know five people that maybe I only saw at technical training in March, but yet we've connected through text and email along the way. It feels like family and a safe place.” This focus on mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and a supportive network. Tammy notes, “We're a group that wants one another to succeed, and that's the power of mentor and mentee relationships.” These connections offer members a trusted group for advice and support, reinforcing that within WOW, no one stands alone. Empowering Connections: Key Takeaways from WOW's Leadership As we wrap up this insightful episode with the Women of Water (WOW) committee, our guests share powerful messages about empowerment, mentorship, and community. Michelle Lunn's closing thoughts are a beacon of encouragement: whether you're new to the industry or a seasoned professional, reaching out and connecting is crucial. Her message is clear—every woman in the industry belongs and has the potential to achieve great things. So, at the next convention or industry event, don't hesitate to introduce yourself and make connections. You have the power to excel and belong. Pam Simmons adds a call for self-awareness and openness to addressing subconscious biases in our interactions. She encourages all professionals to be mindful of how these biases might influence relationships and conversations. This self-reflection is essential for fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Tammy Faber challenges seasoned professionals to reach out to those who may seem hesitant or reserved. By engaging with someone who might be standing on the sidelines, you can make a significant impact. Invite them for a coffee, introduce yourself, and help them feel welcome. This simple act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone new in the room. Janice Shawl reminds us that women are a vibrant and integral part of the water treatment industry. Her message celebrates the contributions of women and underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing their presence in the field. Stephanie Choury underscores the immense value of mentorship. Whether at an industry event or in everyday interactions, extending a helping hand to others can be incredibly rewarding. She emphasizes that mentorship is a two-way street and encourages everyone to be both mentors and mentees. By fostering these relationships, we can all contribute to a supportive and thriving professional community. Paule Genest reinforces the core message of WOW: we belong, we elevate, and we are WOW. She urges everyone to help others recognize their worth and potential, creating a positive impact both within and beyond the industry. As we look at the current statistics—only 10% of surveyed AWT members are women, and a similar percentage represents women in industrial water treatment nationally—there is a clear need for continued effort. In 2024, 40% of our Scaling UP! H2O podcast guests have been women, reflecting progress and the importance of representation. Our challenge to you, Scaling UP! Nation is to connect with the remarkable women you heard from in this episode. Together, we can empower women in the best industry in the world to make a lasting impact on the water treatment industry and build a thriving, inclusive community. Your test kit should not look like Moses used it to test the waters just before he parted the Red Sea. While it does not have to look pristine and new either, it should instill confidence in those that see it that the results obtained are trustworthy and reliable. Old reagent bottles with the labels worn off, broken equipment, and a jumbled mess of bottles does not instill confidence. Your test kit and equipment are extensions of you and are critical to doing your job. They reflect upon you and your quality of output and recommendations. Show them a little tender loving care. In the end, it will make your job easier and leave a better impression upon those around you.
In this solocast I talk about the importance of focusing on how you want to respond instead of focusing on other people's reactions, responses, or behaviors. We have no control over changing others'; we only have control and choice over how we respond to others. Our relationship with ourselves is reflected in this “discipline”. Stress can get in the way of our communication with others. To manage our stress, psychologist Jenny Taitz says, we first need to adjust the conversations that we have with ourselves.Taitz is an assistant clinical professor in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author of several books, including Stress Resets: How to Soothe Your Body and Mind in Minutes. According to her, much of the stress we experience is self-created through negative thought patterns and harsh self-criticism. “We're doing this to ourselves all the time,” she says. But as we become aware of these unhelpful mental loops, Taitz' “resets” can help us disrupt them and reframe self-talk in more productive waysIn addition to changing our self-talk, Taitz offers tools for refreshing our communication with others. We are going to talk about hydrogen bonding, one of my favorite types of bonding in the atomic world. Yeah, I'm weird that way. Water is H2O or two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The two hydrogen atoms are not stuck to each other but are stuck to the oxygen atom instead. It's HOW they are stuck to the oxygen atom that makes all the difference in the universe! They are NOT stuck directly across from each other on the oxygen atom at 180 degrees like the buns on Princess Leia's hair. No buddy. That would have been disastrous for life as we know it! We would have had no hope. Instead, they are stuck at an angle; at approximately a 104.5 degree angle. Think Mickey Mouse with his two ears representing the two hydrogen atoms and his head the oxygen atom. THAT is water. This kink of an angle leads to a very important superpower. Because the hydrogen atoms are small and only have 1 measly electron, they're easy to push around and take their electrons. The much bigger oxygen atom only needs 2 more electrons to fill its outer shell and be in a state of nirvana, and it gets these from the two hydrogen atoms. Because the water molecule looks like Mickey Mouse with the hydrogen atoms more on one side of the molecule than the other, you end up with a partial positive charge on the more hydrogen side and a partial negative charge on the more oxygen side. We've all heard that opposites attract, and that's true in the world of chemistry as well. The partially positive side of one water molecule is attracted to the partially negative side of another water molecule, making water “sticky.” This, my friends, is called hydrogen bonding. It doesn't just end with water molecules sticking to each other, though. Water molecules will also be attracted to other positively and negatively charged ions, too. For example, this explains why table salt or NaCl dissolves so easily in water. The positive sodium ions are attracted to the partially negative oxygen side of the water molecule while the negative chloride ions are attracted to the partially positive hydrogen side. Hydrogen bonding leads to all kinds of unique properties of water. Water is a liquid at room temperature. That may sound like a “duh” comment, but when one considers that other molecules of similar or heavier weights are gasses at room temperature, such as methane, propane, and butane, it suddenly seems a little more amazing. Water has a high heat capacity, meaning it takes more heat to raise the temperature of water and especially to make it change phases from solid to liquid to gas. We use this property every day in industrial water applications with boilers, cooling towers, etc., and it's all thanks to hydrogen bonding. There are more examples, but it should suffice to say that hydrogen bonding is one of water's primary super powers that influences our industrial water lives in so many ways every second of every minute of every day. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Why resistance isn't always a bad thing.Friction — that's Professor Huggy Rao's metaphor for the forces that hamper workplace efficiency. But as he says, some friction can be helpful — if you know how to use it.In his book, The Friction Project: How Smart Leaders Make the Right Things Easier and the Wrong Things Harder, Rao and coauthor Robert I. Sutton explore how operational obstacles show up in the workplace and, more importantly, what we can do about them. Through what Rao calls “friction fixing,” leaders can “take out the bad friction to make the right things easy to do [and] put in good friction to make the wrong things harder [to do].”As Rao discusses with host Matt Abrahams on this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, leaders can eliminate bad friction through good communication. “Communication matters a lot,” he says. “The simple rule is, make sure a 10-year-old can understand it on the first try.”Episode Reference Links:Huggy Rao: Website Huggy's Books: The Friction Project, Scaling Up Excellence, & Market Rebels Huggy's Successful Communication Recipe - “Ah!
