Mike Rothmiller - Chappaquiddick The Killing Of Mary Jo KopechneEd is joined by former LA Detective Mike Rothmiller to discuss Ted Kennedy's biggest nightmare; the events surrounding the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. The Chappaquiddick incident occurred on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts some time around midnight between July 18 and 19, 1969, when Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy negligently drove his car off a narrow bridge, causing it to overturn in a tidal pond. This resulted in the drowning death of his 28-year-old passenger Mary Jo Kopechne, who was trapped inside the vehicle.Kennedy left a party on Chappaquiddick at 11:15p.m. Friday. He maintained that his intent was to immediately take Kopechne to a ferry landing and return to Edgartown, but that he accidentally made a wrong turn onto a dirt road leading to a one-lane bridge. After his car skidded off the bridge into Poucha Pond, Kennedy swam free, and maintained that he tried to rescue Kopechne from the submerged car, but that he could not. Kopechne's death could have happened any time between about 11:30p.m. Friday and 1a.m. Saturday, as an off-duty deputy sheriff stated he saw a car matching Kennedy's license plate at 12:40a.m. Kennedy left the scene and did not report the accident to police until after 10a.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, a diver recovered Kopechne's body from Kennedy's car shortly before 9a.m. Saturday. These events curtailed the Kennedy dynasty on a permanent basis; up until then it had seemed the illusion of Camelot was in his hands, but it lay shattered beyond repair.Mike discusses his research into the case, and his conclusions based on his experience as a detective and his investigation and research. And it's even more surprising than it sounds.Mike Rothmiller is a New York Times Bestselling author, historian, a former cop, and an Army medic. Welcome to The Georgia Politics Podcast, where Craig and Professor Stone present Part 2 of their special on the life and legacy of Senator Ted Kennedy. The primary topic for Part 2 is the notorious Chappaquiddick episode of Kennedy's life, how it shaped the country's politics, and continued a Kennedy family legacy of controversy. The Kennedys are the closest equivalent America has to political royalty. John F. Kennedy was, of course, the 35th President of the United States and his brother Bobby Kennedy served as his Attorney General, and later as a Senator from New York and Presidential candidate. Various other Kennedys have served in other appointed and elected political positions. Ted Kennedy, the younger brother of John and Bobby, is known for his long tenure in the United States Senate, where he served from 1962 until his death in 2009. His political and personal life was full of both promise and controversy. He was long considered the heir to the Kennedy dynasty, and then a tragic incident on Chappaquiddick Island left 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne dead after a car driven by Kennedy crashed into the Poucha Pond. Kennedy survived. Clips used in this episode: 1969 ABC News report on Ted Kennedy's accident at Chappaquiddick Island Edward J. On July 19th, 1969, on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. Ted Kennedy and an aide for his brother Robert's presidential campaign careened off a bridge into the water. Ted Kennedy made it out alive, the aide, on the other hand, was trapped in the car and did not survive. What was strange about the incident was why they were driving over the bridge in the first place? Why was there an unaccounted for hour in the timeline? Why didn't Kennedy call for help? Why didn't Kennedy report the crash? How was this man re-elected for nearly 40 more years in the senate?

In this age, where everyone has a cell phone, and almost every kind of event on planet Earth is recorded it is sometimes hard to harken back to the days when interesting events were missed entirely of if not missed, not recorded or remembered. But on August 19, 1896 one of the best documented sightings ever recorded of a waterspout occurred. It was visible by thousands of people about 8 miles north of Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Massachusetts. Three spouts altogether occurred between 12:45PM and 1:25PM. The largest of the 3 lasted 18 minutes with a diameter estimated at 240'. Water was agitated to a height of 400' and column was 3600' high. Rev. Crandall J. North reported; "the Whirlwind lashed the sea into foam, spray and vapor...it stood for many minutes before the wondering gaze of thousands, a variable pillar of cloud by day" Learn more about your ad choices. The Beach Boys - TM Song (1976) I am hoping The Beach Boys knew that this song was so terrible that no DJ in his right mind would offer up anything but the "money" song, which, in this case, was a nearly total soul-evisceration of Chuck Berry's wonderful hit. The BB version went to #8, but that was on the heels of their surprisingly popular Endless Summer compilation from the previous year. Even with the little play that starts the song, the whole thing lasted a mercifully short 1:35. I hate BB apologists. The Beach Boys - Transcendental Meditation (1968) Charles Lloyd and The Beach Boys - TM (Transcendental Meditation) (1972) Backing vocals by Al Jardine, Billy Hinsche (a friend of the band from way back, who was in Dino, Desi, and Billy) Carl Wilson, Michael Love, and Pamela Polland. Muhammad Ali - Ali's Elusive Dream (1976) If Dan was here, he'd say this was Ali's Rubber Soul. Wolfman Jack - Free Shots (1975) Cautionary tale about VD. Who was Debbie Sabusawa? Mike Douglas - Have a Nice Trip (1968) Cautionary tale about drugs. Reuben Ware - The Fate Of Mary Jo Kopechne (1971) From Wikipedia: On July 18, 1969, Kopechne attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island, off the east coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The celebration was in honor of the dedicated work of the Boiler Room Girls and was the fourth such reunion of Robert Kennedy campaign workers. Robert's surviving brother, Senator Ted Kennedy, was there. Kopechne reportedly left the party with Kennedy at 11:15 p.m.; according to his account, he had offered to drive her to catch the last ferry back to Edgartown, where she was staying. She did not tell her close friends at the party that she was leaving, and she left her purse and keys behind. Kennedy drove the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off a narrow, unlit bridge, which lacked guardrails and was not on the route to Edgartown. The vehicle landed on its roof in Poucha Pond. Kennedy extricated himself from the vehicle and survived, but neglected to inform authorities until the next day of the accident and his inability to rescue Kopechne. Assistant Medical examiner Donald Mills signed a death certificate listing cause of death as accidental drowning. A private funeral for Kopechne was held at St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1969. The service was attended by Kennedy, his wife Joan, his sister-in-law Ethel, and hundreds of onlookers. Kopechne was buried in St. Vincent's Cemetery in Larksville, Pennsylvania, in the parish cemetery on the side of Larksville Mountain. She was among the fifth generation of her family interred in that cemetery. The exact time and cause of Kopechne's death is not positively known, due to conflicting witness testimony at the January 1970 inquest, and lack of an autopsy. Kennedy claimed the accident occurred shortly after he left the party at 11:15 p.m. on July 18. But part-time Deputy Sheriff Christopher "Huck" Look testified that he saw Kennedy's car, with Kopechne and Kennedy in it, around 12:40 a.m. on July 19. John Farrar, the fire rescue captain who retrieved the body on July 19, testified he believed that Kopechne stayed alive for up to half an hour in an air pocket, and ultimately suffocated in the submerged vehicle. A petition to exhume the body for autopsy was denied by a Pennsylvania court. Kennedy failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. Kopechne's parents said that they learned of their daughter's death from Kennedy before he informed authorities of his involvement. They learned Kennedy had been the driver from wire press releases sometime later. Melinda Marx - How I Wish You Came (1965) Melinda Marx was the daughter of Groucho Marx. Y'all, this one is CRAZY! On July 18th, 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy was supposedly driving 28-year-old political operative Mary Jo Kopechne back to her hotel. An unknown (and suspicious) series of events caused him to take a wrong turn and drive off the road into a pond. He made it out unharmed, but Mary Jo did not survive. Ted waited 10 hours to report the crash or Mary Jo's death. It is suspected Mary Jo would still be alive if Ted had taken action. Tune in to hear about the angel that is Mary Jo, some WILD choices made by Senator Ted Kennedy, the special treatment he received in trial, and some really frustrating results. Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died in 2009, was an iconic figure in American politics, part of an American political dynasty that has been rocked by fame and tragedy. Compared to his brothers Robert F. Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy, Ted was considered a lightweight, who rode their coattails into the Senate in 1962 at the age of 30. Neal Gabler, author of the new biography, "Catching the Wind: Edward Kennedy and the Liberal Hour, 1932-1975," says that following the assassinations of his brothers, Ted Kennedy became the leading voice of American liberalism, championing the war on poverty, civil rights, and the antiwar movement. But his moral authority and his presidential ambitions were seriously damaged by his involvement in a fatal car accident on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969. The Kennedy family saga marked a milestone this year: Joe Kennedy III, grandson of RFK, lost to incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in a primary, becoming the first Kennedy ever to lose a Massachusetts election. Could this spell the end of the Kennedy dynasty? Gabler says it's possible "if the country doesn't want to give voice to the voiceless or power to powerless."

Join us for a virtual conversation with Neal Gabler, award-winning author and film critic, to discuss volume one of his new biography of Ted Kennedy—an immersive journey through the life of a complicated man and a sweeping history of the fall of liberalism. Gabler pursues the Ted Kennedy seldom seen beneath the well-known images of the reckless hedonist who rode his father's fortune and his brothers' coattails to a Senate seat at the age of 30, and finds a man both racked by and driven by insecurity. Considered by his contemporaries as the least of the Kennedys, his childhood was filled with numerous humiliations, including self-inflicted ones, all the while being pressured to rise to his brothers' level. Kennedy entered the Senate to low expectations—a show horse, not a workhorse. But he drew upon his “ninth-child's talent” of deference to and comity with his Senate elders to become an influential legislator. Using his brothers' moral authority, Kennedy became a moving force during the great “liberal hour” that saw the passage of the anti-poverty program and the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts. Then, after the deaths of John and Robert and the election of Richard Nixon, Kennedy became the leading voice of liberalism, challenging Nixon to keep the American promise to the marginalized, and provoking Nixonian terror of a Kennedy restoration. Gabler also chronicles how the fatal accident on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969 dealt a serious blow not just to Kennedy's political career but to liberalism itself. In this special episode Kate asks a medium to discuss the unsolved mysteries of the disappearance of Jennifer Kesse, the death of actress Brittany Murphy, whether Amanda Knox was involved in the death of her Italian roommate Meredith Kercher, and what really happened on July 18, 1969 on Chappaquiddick Island. Jennifer Joyce Kesse lived in Orlando, Florida and has been missing since January 24, 2006. Her disappearance puzzled investigators and an aggressive search for her was conducted in the area surrounding her home. Shortly after her disappearance, her car was discovered a little over a mile from her home at a nearby apartment complex. No evidence was ever made known with regards to her, such as finger prints, DNA or cellphone location information from nearby towers. Captured footage from a nearby security camera showed an unidentified person parking Kesse's car before walking away. The case received widespread state and national press attention at the time of her disappearance.Brittany Murphy was an American actress and singer. A native of Atlanta, Murphy moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and pursued a career in acting. Her breakthrough role was as Tai Frasier in Clueless (1995), followed by supporting roles in independent films such as Freeway (1996) and Bongwater (1998). In December 2009, Murphy died of pneumonia at the age of 32. Meredith Kercher was a British student on exchange from the University of Leeds who was murdered at the age of 21 in Perugia, Italy, on 1 November 2007. Kercher was found dead on the floor of her bedroom. By the time the bloodstained fingerprints at the scene were identified as belonging to Rudy Guede, police had charged Kercher's American flatmate, Amanda Knox, and Knox's Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. The subsequent prosecutions of Knox and Sollecito received international publicity. The Chappaquiddick incident was a single-vehicle car accident that occurred on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, on Friday, July 18, 1969. The late night accident was caused by Senator Ted Kennedy’s negligence, and resulted in the death of his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, who was trapped inside the vehicle.Reality Life with Kate Casey http://www.loveandknuckles.comTwitter: @katecaseyInstagram: @katecaseycaFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/113157919338245/Facebook.com/loveandknucklesAmazon List: http://www.amazon.com/shop/katecaseycaSUAVEhttp://www.suave.comBOMBAShttp://www.bombas.com/realityPROMO CODE: REALITYKOPARIwww.kopari.com/reality See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
