Ria Overholt, Community Services Director for Missoula Aging Services stops by the Trail1033 studio to chat with Mike smith about March for Meals and the current state of funding for the meals on wheels program. March for Meals is an annual month-long fundraising campaign to raise money for Meals on Wheels in Missoula county. Last year, more than 123,000 meals were delivered to older Missoulians through Meals on Wheels. Now is the time for Trail1033 listeners to join forces with MAS to celebrate more than 50 years of success and to protect this critical program that continues to enable independence, and improve health by combating food insecurity, malnutrition, and social isolation. In this episode of the Dover Download podcast, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with John Storer, Community Services Director, and Brian Landry, Public Works Supervisor, about winter preparations and challenges in snow removal. The conversation covers the extensive planning and preparation undertaken by the team before snowfall, including equipment readiness and crew briefing. They discuss the types of equipment used, like wing plow trucks, loaders, and sidewalk tractors, emphasizing the all-hands-on-deck approach during plowing events. Storer and Landry detail the difficulties in handling different types of snow, especially wet snow, and the slow pace of clearing sidewalks in such conditions. They address the high expectations of Dover citizens and the logistical challenges they face, such as staffing shortages and equipment breakdowns. The discussion also includes how residents can stay informed about parking bans during storms. Moreover, they discuss environmental concerns, particularly regarding the use of salt for de-icing roads. Efforts to reduce salt usage through brining equipment and more efficient application methods are mentioned. They also touch on the importance of community participation in clearing hydrants and catch basins post-storm. In "This Week in Dover History," Mike Gillis discusses an event from 1924, where eight women employees from the Dover office of Twin State Gas and Electric attended a company meeting in Berlin, New Hampshire.
Banned books that left us speechless! We're here to honor the literature that influenced the type of person we are today! Are we able to keep it sexy? Hysterically so. Meanwhile, we love to keep our impressions intact. We honor Kim Ly Bui: im Ly Bui known professionally as Bui-Burton was the first Vietnamese-American Library Director in the country, appointed in 2004 to Monterey Public Library . Kim was elected the first Vietnamese American president of CLA in 2010. Believing that libraries, and librarians, belong everywhere, Kim became Monterey's Library and Community Services Director in 2010. She increased the city's economic base with a $60 million conference center renovation and expanded access to library archives and museums through heritage tourism initiatives. After retirement in 2017, as President of the Friends, Kim led a capital campaign to renew the Pacific Grove Library and serves as Chair of Pacific Grove's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force.

When your family loses a loved one it impacts everyone, but how grief looks and sounds in kids can be very different from adults. Today Bethann and Chrissie are speaking with Kate Lannan, MSW, LSW, Community Services Director at A Haven, a nonprofit organization supporting grieving families and children. We discuss how grief presents differently in kids at various ages and how “play is processing and behavior is communication”. Kate explains ways to support kids while also taking care of ourselves during this time, and how to have conversations about death that are honest, factual, and brief. We also discussed how grief can come and go, that it is normal to feel distressed, and we can't fix our feelings…but we can try to process them with support. Join us! 141 Report: “A Proper Send-Off” in SFO Celebrates Retirements and Solidarity What began as a plan to have a small retirement party for 49 Storekeepers who chose United's voluntary separation programs turned into a day-long celebration for all Machinists Union members in SFO. Over 1,000 union members from Local Lodges 1781 and 1782 in Burlingame, CA enjoyed food, live music, games, and camaraderie while saluting their brothers and sisters moving on to new horizons after their service at United, American, Hawaiian and other carriers. Dave Lehive talks with Chris Lusk, Committee Chair and Vice President of Local 1781, who also serves as Vice President, West of District 141, and with Olu Ajetomobi, Assistant General Chair for District 141. AGC Troy Rivera joins the conversation on a video clip, where he tells how his plan blossomed into a celebration and proper send-off for 285 retirees that all members could enjoy. The original group of 5 planners turned into an organizing committee that had 35 volunteers on the day of the event. “It was a pretty well-oiled machine,” said Chris Lusk. The organizers had gathered 650 RSVPs on their social media posts, but once they shared pictures of the setup on the morning of the event, phones and social media websites exploded with excitement and more RSVPs. Attendance numbers are not finalized, but they expect they had “well over” 1,000 participants. The event was open to all IAM members working at United, American, Hawaiian, and Flagship Services in SFO. Four food trucks, which earned “rave reviews,” kept members and their families well fed, along with a beautifully displayed dessert table featuring the IAM logo. Members also enjoyed live music, games, and raffles. The most popular feature was a “dunk tank” where members had the opportunity to hit a target that sent their favorite AGC or local officer into a water tank for good fun and to raise money for Guide Dogs of America, the Machinists Union favorite charity. Cristina Odoardi, District 141 Community Services Director, was on hand and helped coordinate that part of the event. There were also opportunities for members to learn more about the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL), the Retiree Club, and other ways to stay involved in the union. Brother Olu Ajetonobi says many retirees “just drop by,” but members of the Retiree Club are active in the local's community service events, such as food drives. The celebration left IAM members, guests, and families wanting more. Hearing comments such as “when's the next event, what can I do to help?” encouraged Chris to declare that ”this will be an ongoing event.” He encouraged every local to take time to celebrate our bonds and solidarity. IAM District Lodge 141 Report with Host Dave Lehive a communications Coordinator talks to guests every Friday at 2 pm Eastern. Our Video report can be seen on Facebook at www.facebook.com/IAMAWDistrict141/videos or Youtube at www.youtube.com/user/iam141org where we hear from union members and friends and allies of the labor movement. In this episode of the Ulysses Neuro Podcast, we celebrate Fragile X Awareness Day, which falls on the 22nd July in the US and other countries. We hear from Holly Roos, Community Services Director for the FRAXA Research Foundation, and her youngest child A. Holly is a mother of two children diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) and she shares her experience both as a mother and a carrier, discussing the challenges she has had to face from the very first day, sharing personal life stories and what kind of medical and educational support she had and how important it is to celebrate every single inchstone and milestone. A is 18 and lives in Illinois with Holly. A has just finished high school and is preparing to go to college soon. Holly and A share their experience of living with FXS, discussing the journey they have been on with Parker over the past two decades, and the challenges they have faced and overcome. FXS is a single gene disorder affecting 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females. It is the leading inherited cause of intellectual disability and it is caused by mutation of the FMR1 gene, which in turn reduces the production of the FMRP protein. FMRP is crucial for typical brain development as it controls expression of a number of other neurodevelopmental genes. Two main mutations have been identified: The full mutation giving rise to FXS, and a pre-mutation form in carriers whose children are of greater risk of having FXS. Carriers are also at risk themselves of a neurodegenerative disorder called Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS). Currently, despite the considerable progress in research in FXS, there is no cure or approved medication to treat the underlying causes of FXS and related conditions. This is in addition to the challenges faced by individuals with FXS and their families when it comes to diagnosis, support, and education.
