Fear the 'Fro is back after this make believe game with Maccabi Ra'anana. With the starters shutdown, JB handed the reigns to the Cavaliers depth, as Cleveland got strong outings from Dean Wade, Emoni Bates, Caris Levert, Craig Porter Jr., and Ty Jerome. Bob continues what has been a two podcast stroke job on the Kansas State Wildcat legend, Dean Jackson Wade. Is he assured rotation minutes? Where does this leave Emoni Bates? And finally, who eats pudding in courtside seats? MONSTERS, that's who.(0:00) Intro(1:30) The Cavs win and Dean Wade continues his strong play(8:45) Why Dean vs. Emoni shouldn't be a thing(14:22) Levert and Jerome with great guard play(16:12) Damian Jones redeems himself at the FT line(17:20) Pudding: Why Is It At Courtside?(19:28) ANNOUNCEMENTS
Preseason action is on! The Cavs are 0-2, but the vibes are overwhelming positive as the role guys are showing out. Dean Wade looks fully healthy, Emoni Bates has picked up where he left off in summer league, and Ty Jerome has an excellent game as the Cavs failed to complete a comeback against the Orlando Magic. Plus... a completely unnecessary anthem that is neither timely or topical, but furthers Bob's campaign of hate.(0:00) F*ck That Guy - A song in the style of Doja Cat(2:20) Intro and toenails(6:30) The drippy one is thriving(9:09) Evan Mobley's improvement (14:25) Emoni Bates tries to rally the Cavs(24:31) Damian Jones goes goose egg, Dean Wade taking his minutes?(26:15) Magic got big game out of Franz, and crybaby behavior from Ingles(27:08) Miles Bridges back in trouble(31:31) The NBA GM Survey slight... where was Koby's votes?
Chase Smith, John Sabol, and Sam Amico talk with Damian Jones at Cavs Media Day.
With training camp only a few days away, it's easy to start to think about what the rotations will look like. One place that's getting a lot of attention? With the addition of Christian Wood, how will the Lakers fold him in a way that makes the most sense offensively AND defensively? To that end, one prevailing argument (expressed on this show, for sure) is that Wood isn't a great option to start because it leaves LeBron James playing far too much small forward by design, which is not a good idea for a nearly 40-year old player in his 21st season. So in response to a viewer question about the Davis/James/Wood rotation dynamic, we break down how it could work. Yes, the three of them might get a few minutes together here and there, but it's likely not a regular thing. That said, Wood can absolutely, and will absolutely, play with both guys. It's just that more attention goes to his fit with Davis, both because in theory Davis protects Wood defensively, and because it's Wood that helps Davis spend less time at center, vs. power forward. To say the least, Darvin Ham has a wealth of options at his disposal. As camp gets closer, we're focusing on position groups. Monday was the guards, today the centers. Another big contrast between last year's group and this year's (remember Damian Jones?). Davis, Wood and Jaxson Hayes are the three main C's, with LeBron and Jarred Vanderbilt likely to get a few minutes here and there in small lineups. It looks like there's a blueprint for Davis and Wood... but what does that leave Hayes? Is there a path to playing time for him, especially in the games where Davis and Wood are available? Finally, another great viewer comment about the way the bar is likely to be raised in the West this year. Last year wasn't exactly easy, but it's fair to say the Conference played along as the Lakers struggled, and left the door open far longer than it might have been in a typical year. And this season is shaping up to be truly brutal. So how tough is that path to a high seed?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Optimism to start the season, and a look at the James/Davis/Wood dynamic.SEGMENT 2: Breaking down the centers.SEGMENT 3: It's gonna be very, very tough out West this year.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!DoorDashGet fifty percent off your first DoorDash order up to a twenty-dollar value when you use code lockedonnba at checkout. The Utah Jazz conitnue to show their is no tank in their season. An incredible effort without Lauri Markkanen and Collin Sexton showed once again the relentlessness of Team 49. Ochai Abagi had one of his best games of the year and NBA scouts are beginning to be really impressed by Abagi and what he can do for the Utah Jazz. Who is a comp for a 6'5 210 pound player? A million but what David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider, has three to look at as possibilities for the Utah Jaz rookie. Walker Kessler had an outstanding game and bothered Ja Morant all night. The Utah Jazz found two players that may fill out the rotation for the final 20 games in Juan Toscana Anderson and Damian Jones. Locked On Jazz Podcast

The Lakers were very busy on Wednesday, doing good work to turn Russell Westbrook, two non-rotation players (Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson) and a first round pick into D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. All three will be rotation players. On Thursday, ahead of the NBA's trade deadline, the Lakers stayed active. They flipped center Thomas Bryant to Denver for three second round picks and forward Davon Reed, then turned around and sent three second round picks and Patrick Beverley to Orlando for center Mo Bamba. Essentially, they traded Bryant's offense for Bamba's rim protection while also giving themselves access to a player they can keep going forward if they choose. (Re-signing Bryant this offseason would have been a challenge.)So if you're keeping score, the Lakers have added five players in two days, four of which will almost certainly play a real role in the rotation in exchange for two rotation guys (Beverley and Westbrook), one rotation guy who was losing a hold on his spot (Bryant) two non-factors and a first rounder. That's excellent work by Rob Pelinka and his crew. The Lakers roster is now younger, has more shooting, more interior and wing defense, and more cohesiveness moving into this offseason and next year. It's a good day for the Lakers. Good enough? The Western Conference went AGGRESSIVE at the deadline, so competition is fierce. But they gave themselves a chance.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Lakers looked like a team that might be on the verge of cracking Tuesday in their loss to Oklahoma City. Russell Westbrook got into an open argument with assistant Phil Handy, and then Darvin Ham at halftime. Anthony Davis was oddly detached from basically everything that was going on. It felt like if the Lakers made it through the deadline without trying to improve, things could go south really fast.Well, Wednesday they tried to improve. The Lakers reportedly will send Russell Westbrook and a lightly protected first round pick (along with Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones) to Utah, as part of a three-way trade netting them former Laker D'Angelo Russell from the Timberwolves, along with shooting guard Malik Beasley and forward Jarred Vanderbilt from Utah. The trade should make the Lakers better right away, replacing one rotation player with three rotation quality guys, two of whom will add genuine three-point accuracy and volume to their offense. The latter is a big thing, because even on nights when they shoot a decent percentage, the Lakers still don't actually make very many three's. That can make things tough. Plus, the floor should be spaced better for LeBron James and Davis.Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is a very good defensive player who is improving enough on the other end to be a net neutral, and should find low usage, high percentage opportunities moving off ball while surrounded by James, Davis, and other solid players.Basically, the Lakers have, with these three players and the Rui Hachimura deal, reconstructed a viable middle class for their roster, something that has been painfully missing for the last couple of seasons, since they executed the Westbrook deal. Can they get better fast enough to matter in a Western Conference undergoing an arms race? Remains to be seen. But the Lakers did very good work on Wednesday, acquiring three solid players for one first rounder and rid themselves of Westbrook at the same time.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers make a big trade.SEGMENT 2: What the new players do for the roster.SEGMENT 3: Is it enough to get them into the top 10, or even higher?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. As the Lakers adjust to life without Anthony Davis, a greater emphasis will be placed on the strengths and weaknesses of their big men and how to best support them on a roster without a lot of size. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss Thomas Bryant, Wenyen Gabriel, and Damian Jones by focusing on what each player provides and doesn't, and what role they envision is best for all three. The guys also discuss where LeBron fits into the "big man" rotation, particularly on defense. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Last season, the Lakers approached the preseason with an attitude of a team that believed it was championship caliber, had plenty of veteran experience and could afford to, well, ease into the season. The pretend games? Whatever. Not worth the time and energy to take seriously, or in the case of the Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, participate in fully so that the three of them could build some chemistry with each other, and a roster that had completely turned over. It... didn't work very well. The Lakers didn't just go 0-6 last preseason, they looked even worse than the record might suggest in the process, and a tone was set for the entire year. The Lakers never caught up. So this season, it looks like everyone from LeBron on down is going to be available, and the intensity of these games is going to look different. They don't mean everything, but they do mean something, and for a team that needs to get off to a good start in a deep Western Conference, it's important for Darvin Ham and crew to build some continuity. So important stuff starts Monday night at the Crypt against the Kings. Meanwhile, Ham has been running with an early starting lineup of the three stars, plus Damian Jones at center and Kendrick Nunn in the second guard spot. What do these guys bring to the table? Are they the best choices Ham has available? Nunn, in particular, could be a critically important member of the rotation for a team that lacked a solid middle class a year ago. He has the potential to inject something the Lakers missed last season, with a skill set the Lakers could have used a year ago, and definitely need today. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are taking the preseason seriously this year, thankfully. SEGMENT 2: What exactly do the preseason results mean this year? The Lakers made weekend news signing free agent guard Dennis Schröder to a one-year deal, bringing him back for a second run in El Segundo. Through the weekend, more reporting emerged explaining why the Lakers thought it was a good idea reunite with the mercurial German. There was a good performance at Eurobasket, which is some pretty high end competition. And that he went to play there without the security of an NBA deal in hand. (A cynic would note that added need for him to go play, in order to get one.) There was lobbying from Schröder to return, and some strong statements about righting unfinished business on his Instagram page that demonstrates a desire to contribute to the purple and gold. And, of course, some practical understanding that more depth could come in handy, given lingering question marks around Kendrick Nunn's health and a fairly well-established injury history with Patrick Beverley (he's missed a ton of games over the last few seasons). Plus LeBron James, and natural worries about his body at age 39. But how exactly do the Lakers plan on getting all these guys on the floor? Well, they're gonna have to go small, first of all. And it might also mean using Beverley in creative ways, as a 3-and-D guy often assigned to be the team's primary wing defender. Now, a lot of work is being done defining "wing," here. Can't imagine the Lakers spend a lot of time letting Beverley spend games running with, say, Jayson Tatum. But what about bigger 2-guards? Do they plan on using Austin Reaves more as a 3? What about Lonnie Walker IV? Bottom line, while the Lakers can claim they'll play all six members of the backcourt, practically speaking it's nearly impossible, if any of Thomas Bryant, Damian Jones, Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Troy Brown ever get to take off their warmups. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why did the Lakers bring Schröder back? SEGMENT 2: How much does Schröder's Eurobasket success really matter? With two weeks until training camp starts, a recent report places Kendrick Nunn and Damian Jones into the Lakers starting lineup this season. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss this group, debate whether this reflects current circumstances or if it can be more lasting, and whether their own starting 5 would differ. Then later, the guys get into who should be a part of a larger 10-man rotation, why the team's forward depth is again a question mark and whether it can be mitigated through style of play. Monday's episode was all about reasons to feel optimistic that this year's Lakers could pay off ESPN predictions to become Team Turnaround, rather than those picking them to be this season's Team Turmoil. Subtle indications the shooting could be a little better than believed, for example. Today, more reasons to feel positive! Because we're all about the vibes this week. For starters, go to the centers. The Lakers had arguably the worst, most unplayable pair of C's the league has seen in a while, ping-ponging from DeAndre Jordan to Dwight Howard when Anthony Davis was either unavailable or playing power forward. With Thomas Bryant and Damian Jones, the Lakers recover a lot of the qualities they've worked effectively whether with JaVale McGee/Howard in 2020, or what was supposed to be working with Marc Gasol and Montrezz Harrell two seasons ago. Spacing, vertical threats, athleticism, and so on. Then there's coaching. His fault or not, Frank Vogel didn't add value last year, and probably cost them some thanks to a deteriorating relationship with his roster and a front office that undercut him from the jump with no security and a roster poorly designed for his ethos. If Darvin Ham can bring that dynamic back to neutral, the Lakers gain. If he can add value, they gain more. And Ham's presence, along with a massive dose of context, could help Russell Westbrook be a more positive contributor than he was last season. (But before all that... updates on the big NBA news of the day, around the potential trades of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Donovan Mitchell, all of which impact the Lakers going forward in one way or another. A new team has reportedly entered the mix for Durant! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: An update on the KD rumors, Mitchell rumors, and Kyrie rumors. And therefore, Lakers rumors. LA needs to make sure plans B, C, D and E are lined up, because all of this might take a while. SEGMENT 2: Centers and Ham. Reasons to feel better about the team. SEGMENT 3: More Ham, and why a self-aware Westbrook could be a very different deal this season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! If he can add value, they gain more. And Ham's presence, along with a massive dose of context, could help Russell Westbrook be a more positive contributor than he was last season.(But before all that... updates on the big NBA news of the day, around the potential trades of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Donovan Mitchell, all of which impact the Lakers going forward in one way or another. A new team has reportedly entered the mix for Durant!HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: An update on the KD rumors, Mitchell rumors, and Kyrie rumors. And therefore, Lakers rumors. LA needs to make sure plans B, C, D and E are lined up, because all of this might take a while.SEGMENT 2: Centers and Ham. Reasons to feel better about the team.SEGMENT 3: More Ham, and why a self-aware Westbrook could be a very different deal this season.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. In adding Thomas Bryant and Damian Jones this offseason, the Lakers hope to get a massive boost in both production and quality depth at the Center position compared to last season. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss both bigs as value additions who can be high reward players, debate who projects to be the best fit as a starter, and wonder whether Jones will end up shooting 3's this season. Then later, the guys offer their thoughts on both bigs' defense and whether one stands out above the other at that end of the floor. Learn more about your ad choices. NBA free agency kicked off Thursday afternoon, and the Lakers didn't let limited resources keep them on the sidelines. They signed a center (Damian Jones) and two forwards (Juan Toscano-Anderson and Troy Brown Jr.) to veteran's minimum contracts, and used their taxpayer midlevel exception, worth about $6.5 million, on former Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV. On the one hand, the Lakers broke from last year's free agent trends in significant ways. First, they went much, much younger. The oldest of the quartet is Toscano-Anderson, at 29. On the other, the Lakers didn't pick up any of the shooting they banked last season. Or at least they thought they banked, in hindsight. All told, it reminds Lakers fans of the bind the team is in, trying to make impactful improvements to the roster. (It also reminds Lakers fans of who put the Lakers in this box to begin with... namely, the Lakers.) So what signings were the best? Which were the most questionable? Where do they go from here? Can the Lakers make any trades to fill in some of the gaps? And speaking of trades, Kevin Durant has demanded one out of Brooklyn, contacting owner Joe Tsai himself. And while he's highly unlikely to land in Los Angeles, it does put Kyrie Irving back into play. In fact, some reports suggest Irving might try to force his way to Los Angeles. It's reasonable to ask if this becomes the Thanos of NBA trades -- simply inevitable. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Free agency, Day 1: The Lakers make four moves. What were they trying to accomplish? SEGMENT 2: Breaking down the names. Who do you like, who don't you like? How much better are the Lakers now? SEGMENT 3: The rumors that won't die -- Kyrie Irving is once again being linked to the Lakers, and it seems like it might happen, maybe later, maybe sooner, but at some point.
