Why do we let our kids watch cartoons like Cocomelon or Bluey? Because they are teaching our kids valuable lessons through animation. We can do the exact same thing in our nonprofit training. We can use animation to impart valuable lessons to our learners. That's why I've invited Calvin Dantley to join me and share his experience with animation and training. The Supreme Court decision banning race-conscious college admissions that was handed down over the summer has rocked higher education and has forced colleges and universities across the country to examine their processes. But the implications of this case go far beyond campus. The decision has unleashed a new wave of political and legal attacks against corporate America's anti-discrimination policies. Are our hard-fought DEI initiatives in the workforce the next target? What does this mean for educators and employers? In this episode we are joined by Professor Marcia McCormick, the director of the William C. Wefel Employment Law Center, and Belinda Dantley, the assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the law school.

Few players in NBA history have combined offensive production and efficiency like Adrian Dantley. During his time with the Utah Jazz, Dantley was the most talented scorer in the league. But despite his individual success, Dantley was traded from each of his five NBA teams and never won a championship. Here's a look at one of the most unique superstars in league history.

Dan is joined by four time NBA Champion John Salley to discuss his take on health and wellness. John is a vegan activist and he and Dan connected on the idea that we are very influenced by what we feed ourselves — the actual food, in John's case, and the ideas we have about ourself and the world in Dan's case. John shares how he got his viewpoints, including a look at his NBA days, learning from Adrian Dantley, whom he called ‘the teacher' — a name I paired by Dantley showing John everything he needed to know about how to take care of his body and mind in the NBA. We also talked about his being an observer and this leading to his being able to make an impact on people through his understanding. Dan and John also bond over people with emotional struggles gravitating towards them both, as they understand that a different way of thinking isn't necessarily a bad thing. We discuss how following your dreams leads to some of the biggest breakthroughs as well. John's successes in life come from his many gifts — including his empathy and comedic instincts — an it was a pleasure to have him on Crushing Doubt to talk about mental health and what we need to do to better address it.

Dantley Davis has been a mainstay in the Silicon Valley tech and design community for almost 20 years. His work at PayPal, SAP, Yahoo!, Netflix, and Facebook have all led him to his current role as VP of design and research for one of the most well-known websites in the world — Twitter. So as you can imagine, I had a lot of questions to ask him, and Dantley was gracious enough to give some insight into what he does and on his perspective of the current tech and design industries. Our wide-ranging conversation touched on a number of topics, but first, Dantley talked a bit about the behind-the-scenes work that goes on at Twitter, including the team he leads, diversity and inclusion efforts, how decisions are made at Twitter (such as their latest redesign), and yes...even Black Twitter. Dantley also shared his story of growing up as a military brat, learning to code and landing in San Francisco during the Browser Wars, and spoke on how he stays authentic to himself after being in Silicon Valley for decades. Dantley Davis is a true design leader, and even if you haven't heard of him before this week's interview, chances are that you have experienced his work in some small way. He is truly a pioneer in this digital age!Dantley Davis on TwitterFunction with Anil Dash, Episode 4: "Should Twitter Have an Edit Button?"Like this episode? Ernie DiGregorio was the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 1973-74 season. The No. 3 pick out of Providence after leading the Friars to 27-4 mark during his All-America senior season, Ernie was as exciting as they come. Standing just 6-feet tall and weighing all of 180-pounds, he was a magician on the court. If you were open, Ernie would find a way to get the ball to you. In fact, he set the rookie record for most assists in a game (25) and led the NBA during his rookie campaign in assists with an average of 8.2 per game to go along with 15.2 points-per-game. And, in his rookie year he led the Buffalo Braves to their first-ever playoff appearance. But, a knee injury cut Ernie’s career short. Tim Wendel, author of “Buffalo, Home of The Braves”, makes his second visit to the podcast as we take a look back at the career of Ernie DiGregorio. The Los Angeles Clippers are celebrating their 40th Anniversary on the west coast. But, long before they were the Clippers, they were the Buffalo Braves. And what a legacy they left! In just eight years in Buffalo, three players won Rookie of the Year honors (Bob McAdoo, Ernie DiGregorio, Adrian Dantley), Randy Smith became a fan favorite, coaches like Dr. Jack Ramsay and Cotton Fitzsimmons led the team, and the Braves were a thrilling run-and-gun team to watch. They were showtime before the Lakers were. But, the Braves played at a time when Buffalo adored three college basketball teams and the NHL’s Sabres grabbed the headlines and prime dates at the Aud too. This left the Braves with very few marquee dates to play their home games, and Buffalo sports’ fans just didn’t fill the seats when the Braves played. With an owner who wanted a team in his home state of California a most interesting swap of franchises took place, and the city of Buffalo came out on the short end. Tim Wendel, author of “Buffalo, Home of the Braves”, joins the podcast for a terrific conversation about a team and its long-lasting legacy.
