Welcome, everyone. Well, I'm about at the midpoint of my English farrier tour, had a great time at Focus and The International, and got a lot of fantastic interviews done. Stay tuned for those. As it goes at that type of event, I had a lot of fun and interesting conversations with fellow farriers, both on and off the mic. My esteemed tour guide, Danny Bennett, took me with him to Hereford College and I got to spend some time with the students in the Forge and the classroom. It's hard not to be envious of the facility and the program that they get to attend there. As an added bonus, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, was visiting the college at the same time and I got to meet and converse with him on his tour of the Forge. It doesn't get more British than that. For those who haven't heard Danny's episode with me on the Lockdown Farriery podcast, I'm sticking around England for a little longer to attempt the associate exam of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. I've been prepping for it for a few years now. But this year, I've been focusing a lot of effort on it. With multiple trips down to the Heartland to get lots of help from Chris and Cody, and then attending a Jonathan Nunn clinic down there as well. I was also fortunate enough to get Danny to fly over to Canada for some of his tutelage as well. I can't emphasize enough how much going through the process of pursuing certification and higher level exams has done for me. It's the challenge, the learning, the progress, and it's the people. I have had so many people offer me help, insights, and tools in big ways and small. The Farrier family is a real thing, and they go out of their way to help you out when you show some effort and keenness to learn. Thank you to everyone who has helped me out on this journey. There are way too many of you to name, but all of your help has been appreciated. All of this is a great segue into my conversation with today's guest, an examiner for the AFA, David Sierra. David and I met on Vern Powell's Puerto Vallarta trip, where many of the farriers down there in Mexico were taking their AFA exams. Ask anyone about David Sierra in the farrier world, and they all have nothing but kind words and praise. After finally getting to meet him myself, I understand why. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Here is a link to sign up to the monthly subscription and the process is fairly simple. David Sierra and I go back several decades, having been friends since the start. He has a farrier business in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has become an examiner for the American Furriers Association. We have had him as our examiner in the Heartland a couple of times, and I got to catch up with him in Reno at the 2023 AFA convention. We had a great talk, and you're going to like hearing David's story. We are cleared for takeoff.

David Sierra started fencing at Texas A&M when he needed a PE credit and didn’t want to sign up for Advanced Weightlifting or Aerobic Power-walking. Since then, he has worked his way up the referee ranks and is currently the co-owner of Cutting Edge Fencing Center, a Sabre-only club, near Fort Worth, Texas. Listen as he describes what the fencing world was like back when he started in the 90s and the changes he has helped bring to our sport as both a tournament organizer and a member of the US Fencing Board of Directors. He’ll also talk about what it’s like to start your own fencing club and offers advice to anyone looking to do the same. Important note: yes, David is my beloved husband. We both decided to pursue this interview from an impersonal, impartial journalistic perspective as much as possible and not as a married couple. This is HIS story, not ours. Tune in today to hear what David Sierra, an up and coming Sabre coach, club owner, and referee has to say about the history and the future of fencing.
Back in the day, coaches received training at was then called Coaches' College. Begun in the late 80s by the United States Fencing Association, its purpose was to create an opportunity for professional development for fencing coaches. When the cold war ended, the USFA brought Soviet bloc coaches over in 1990 to lead the program with Jack Keene serving as the main organizer. Alex Beguinet and Vinnie Bradford took up the reins in 1993. Vinnie helped organize it for 10 years, Alex for 20. The USFA decided to cancel the Coaches' College in 2003. The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) started the Coaches' Academy last year to fill the professional development void. Only 8 coaches attended but the spark was created. The Academy this year, organized by Gary Vanderwege, had triple the number of participants. It featured a Moniteur level session from July 30-Aug 3, and an advanced (Prevot and Master) level session from Aug 2-6. The USFCA Annual General meeting was held Aug 3 and several special awards were given out. The main purpose of the Coaches' Academy was to prepare coaches for their certification exams, with most sessions being led by fencing Masters like Peter Burchard, Gary Vanderwege, Paul Sise, Vinnie Bradford, and Jen Oldham. Ariana Klinkov and David Sierra also were on hand to help guide participants. In addition there were sessions such as sport psychology, the business side of being a fencing coach, armory sessions led by Michael Mergens, referee seminars, yoga, watching Dan Kellner give Sam Moelis a high-level Foil lesson, a roundtable discussion about coach vs referee ethics, among others. All in all the Coaches' Academy appears to be getting off to a strong start, as evidenced by the comments from the participants. Listen now to their input about what they experienced at Keystone College in Pennsylvania in early August.

David Sierra is David Att(@david_att), a mix of youth and experience to provide the best musical creature possible: Intelligent techno crafted slowly, where every part has it’s own meaning in the whole concept. He doesn´t fit in the ‘track a day’ production dynamics, in fact he is not a product, he has a meaning and a duty. As Derrick May said once: “This duty is to save the world from bad music”. David Att fights against bad music in two principal fronts, the studio and on stage. In the studio he provides the best audio elements, digital and analogue to craft his very own sound, focused on the dancefloor but with a strong, mental approach with soul. You can now experience his releases on vinyl from the best digital retailers, on his own Studio 14 or Att series Labels, as well as on classic imprints like Synewave / Sleaze or Software Records with his old alias (Attemporal) In the Dj booth, he still support the manual way of doing things, mixing with the old technics turntables as a very dynamic tag team, filling his sets with the best underground beats from the past and the future. As we have learned David Att is all about the music as the short Q&A will discribe :) The mix he made for us is an interesting compilation of tracks from different techno landscapes. 1. Hey David, tell us something about yourself that we don't know? Nothing much to say; I have a simple life. Music is in my head the 24 hours of the day and everything else is in the background. 2. Why techno? The Techno shows the purest side of the electronic music Techno is a form of life. My life. 3. Whats coming up? A New Release on Studio 14."The Beginning Of A New Era". After the success of my first Studio 14 release, I’m totally excited with the release that is coming. My personal vision will be reflected on a new wax. 4. What do you eat for Christmas? Hahaha! I still don't know. But I think I'll eat meat and seafood as every year. 5. Anything extra? Stay tuned with the new releases that is coming from Studio 14 & ATT Series. 2015 will be a great year.
