De centrale banken proberen de inflatie al een tijd te beteugelen. De Fed wil eind 2024 weer terug zijn op een inflatieniveau van 2 procent per jaar. Macro-econoom Edin Mujagic vindt dat de bank dan wel bereid moet zijn om daarvoor een hogere prijs te betalen. 'De werkloosheid moet een stuk harder op gaan lopen om dat te bereiken.' 'Je zou heel snel de indruk kunnen krijgen dat het allemaal gaat zoals het moet gaan, maar dat ligt toch anders', stelt de macro-econoom. Op dit moment gaat de Verenigde Staten richting 4,6 procent werkloosheid. Volgens Mujagic blijkt uit berekeningen van de centrale bank in de Amerikaanse stad Cleveland dat de werkloosheid op moet lopen tot 7,4 procent om het gewenste inflatieniveau van 2 procent te bereiken.  'Dat is een verdubbeling van de huidige werkloosheid, en een verdubbeling zonder een recessie gaat moeilijk', vertelt Mujagic.
