Since Nintendo has apparently decided that Wario Land is a series not worth pursuing, we find ourselves telling that familiar story where an indie developer says "ok, they're not making the game I want to play any more....guess it's up to me!". Enter developer Tour De Pizza and their love letter to Wario Land, Sonic the Hedgehog and all manner of 1990s cartoons, Pizza Tower. That set of inspirations creates a high bar to reach, but Pizza Tower clears that bar by several pepperoni lengths. It's fast, it's fluid, it allows you to create your own level of challenge, the animation captures that older cartoon style, and the music is incredible. Pizza Tower was a treat to play. Joining me to discuss Pizza Tower is returning guest Aaron Klaassen of Super Pod Saga. This one here? It's for the turtle lovers out there… The ones who may or may not have tried to crawl into sewers wondering if there would be pizza and or ninjas waiting in the depths… Or maybe just those susceptible to cartoonish fantasies that our impressionable young minds latched onto… …and now we're in our late thirties daydreaming about pepperoni and James Cagney impressions…Needless to say, we're taking mutants on this one. As a first of its kind, we watched the 1990 classic big screen debut of the boys in green, and that watch-a-long is available right now on our patreon! Yes! Bonus content! But even if you don't have our patreon, you will love this episode. Our special guest Joe Vegas of the Outsiders Social Club remembers vividly watching this in theaters. Nolan Bushnell, the PT Barnum of games, left indellible marks on the industry, some greater than others, and among the big hits like Atari and Chuck E. Cheese, were also many misses and could-have-beens. Our guest, Joneva Barry, was witness to one of them, Kadabrascope, an attempt to use computers to bring down the cost of traditional 2D animation. An accomplished artist and educator, Joneva tells us of those heady days of high tech, great hopes, the comradery with Sente, the fall of Pizza Time Theater and her career in movies and as a school teacher. Show Notes Kris is out this week recovering from oral surgery so Dan and his kids take the reins and try to keep things on the rails. They talk about what they've been playing, the Xbox Developer Showcase, and more in the first half of the show then dive headfirst into the kids' picks for game of the year 2023 and what they are excited for in 2024. The language, despite Dan's somewhat half-hearted efforts, remains as salty as ever. (just what you'd expect from this show) While the countdown to episode 500 hit a bump in the road this week, rest assured that the show itself did not. Text us and say hello! In the second installment of our 3-part look back at the Sam Raimi Spider-Man saga, I team up once again with Odian Levy, the soon-to-be best-selling author behind "Hummingbird," to dissect what is widely hailed as the pinnacle of superhero cinema: Spider-Man 2. This sequel didn't just raise the stakes; it set a new gold standard for what superhero movies could be, intertwining heart-pounding action with the all-too-human drama of balancing life's competing demands.Directed by the horror maestro Sam Raimi, Spider-Man 2 burst onto the scene over twenty years ago, leaving an indelible mark on both Odian and myself. Its blend of thrilling action, deep emotional resonance, and groundbreaking visual effects not only redefined the genre but also resonated with us on a personal level, etching vivid memories of our first viewings (and in Odian's case, the numerous repeat viewings in theaters). This episode dives deep into the rich tapestry of Spider-Man 2, exploring how Peter Parker's juggling act between his duties as a student, photographer, friend, and masked vigilante strikes a chord with anyone who's ever struggled to find balance in their life. We peel back the layers of this cinematic gem, discussing its complex characters, innovative visuals, and the compelling narrative that elevates it from a mere superhero flick to a cinematic tour de force. As always, we sprinkle in anecdotes of our own experiences with the film and wax nostalgic about our enduring love for everything Spider-Man – from the comics and video games to the beloved 90s animated series. So kick back, relax, and join us on this journey through Spider-Man 2 – a film that not only epitomizes the thrill and burden of great power and great responsibility but also continues to swing high as a beacon in superhero storytelling.Support the Show. We've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)
