LFTR Episode 76 - Now that we are settled in at home it's time to recap the summer that was! We try to walk backward through our week at home in Leavenworth. Then we talk favorites, biggest surprises, and things we'd do differently next time from our Great Lakes Summer of Song.Highlights include:* Ponderosa pines smell WONDERFUL!* If you make it easy for us, we'll buy a car. Even if we haven't driven it yet.* Jamie got another new job! (Podcasting doesn't pay the bills)* Housing costs are so, so high now.* The joy and pain of school scheduling * We zig-zagged everywhere this summer - some planned some not* This happens so much for us to go to events, see family and friends, etc.* We kept this trip despite establishing a home base in WA* No leaf peeping for us!* More challenging travel than our Alaska summer?* Humidity is evil* Favorites: upper Midwest, music and theme parks!* Surprises: Great weather at pictures rocks, unplanned Wisconsin stays and bike trails* Favorite concerts: Noah Kahan in St Paul, braving the rain with the kids at Railbird, a spiritual experience at Mt. Joy in Toronto * Do differently: one or two concert plans in a summer is enough, in fact fewer firm plans in general is nice, skip Madeline Island in June, cheap and free stuff is often more fun* We say it's quicker to go to Vancouver than Deception Pass from Leavenworth. At least with normal traffic, it's not.* Best Great Lakes summer: Minnesota North Shore, Wisconsin, Michigan including UP, Chicago, Cedar Point if you're into thatLinks:* Icicle Gorge Trail* Subaru Solterra* Our summer of song itineraryThanks for listening! Perusing the books in the gift shop of the Island County Historical Society Museum in Coupeville, I came across “A History of Whidbey's Island” by George A. Kellogg. The author's name was immediately recognizable to me as the grandson of Dr. Joseph C. Kellogg, one of the original recipients of donation claims lands on the island in the early years of white settlement in the mid-19th century. George Kellogg was born on Whidbey Island at the close of that century, but only lived there for the first seven years of his life. His bio on the book's back cover describes him as a “teacher, salesman, musician, historian, advertising man, corporate leader, and storyteller.” Following a career in advertising and corporate management in Chicago and New York, he retired to yet another island — this one off the coast of Georgia — in 1959, but frequently visited friends and relatives in Coupeville. Kellogg's book was the culmination of research for a master's thesis in Northwest history (which he never completed), and much of the material was gleaned from a collection of weekly columns published in the Oak Harbor Farm Bureau News. In the book's foreword, Kellogg refers to his work of nearly 200 pages as “only an attempt to write an informal history of a pioneer community.” But what drew me to the book was the sense of intimacy in the telling of this history. It was clear that although you could take the boy out of Whidbey Island, the many years between Kellogg's birth on the island and his death in 1983 never succeeded in taking Whidbey Island out of the boy. This Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast episode is a reading of Chapter 1 of “A History of Whidbey's Island,” in which Kellogg recounts the finding of Deception Pass by the island's namesake, Joseph Whidbey, ship's master on Captain George Vancouver's vessel, Discovery. Over the course of the next year I plan to read other chapters from Kellogg's book, which was first published in 1934 by the Island County Historical Society and is currently in its fifth printing. Kellogg graciously granted the Society not only his permission to reprint his work, but to use the royalties to further its work. From my perspective, it's arguably the best $14.95 I've ever spent.

Kate Graham joined us as our special guest co-host on this episode of our NOW Digital Meetup. Kate has an incredible track record providing clear voice and a healthy perspective on the trends, challenges, and innovations relevant to people, work, and technology. We loved following her work at Fosway Group and UNLEASH. Now it's time to check in on Kate's recent move back to the vendor side (what a win for Cornerstone OnDemand!). She had some really fantastic advice for both HR Tech vendors AND consumers. It has to do with transparency, being realistic, and better storytelling. Kate and I can't wait to bring this fresh conversation to the community. BTW, where's Jess Von Bank? She checked in from the course during our Meetup to share their progress! If you've been following us for a while, you know Jess loves to race. During this epsidoe, Jess began a 200-mile Ragnar Relay from the Canadian border (Blaine, WA), running along the glacial Cascade and Olympic Mountain ranges, Deception Pass, and Puget Sound before she crossed the finish line with her team on Whidbey Island, sometime in the afternoon. Go, Jess!
John had dinner with some friends who live on a small island near Deception Pass! Sounds like a great spot but it does present it's challenges!

October 4, 2022 - Tonight we're headed to the west coast, to talk with Mark Tanner, owner of Seattle Mead Company and Deception Cellars in Washington state. Mark is a Seattle native, and retired Army Lt. Colonel. He's been homebrewing for over 25 years, and making mead professionally since 2018. Mark got interested in mead a while back, and was the first Washington resident to pass the BJCP Mead exam, and went on to teach prep classes for the first two BJCP Mead exams in Washington. Mark opened Seattle Mead Company in 2018, and just opened a tasting room in Anacortes, WA, just north of Deception Pass, as northwest as you can get and still be in the United States. Seattle Mead Co has a flagship mead line that is berry-forward and ranges from off dry to medium sweet. Deception Cellars offers meads designed to mimic dry fruit forward jammy red wines. They age on oak, and are positively made to age for decades (though you can drink them now too!). The Deception Cellars meads are currently taking about 18 months to properly age, oak and blend. He's gone on to take a number of medals with his meads, and most recently picked up a few at the Mazer Cup. Mark is very intense on his meadmaking, and we're going to dig deep tonight on what he's doing. Join us! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. When I began my career as a park ranger at Riverside State Park, Jack Hartt would often tell me how lucky he was to the park manager. He convinced me Riverside was the best park in Washington State. I believed him. I followed his lead and proclaimed there was not a better park in the state. Then, Jack became the manager of Deception Pass State Park. He began preaching that Deception Pass was the best park in the state. I almost felt insulted. Riverside was the best park, clearly. And Jack Hartt could no longer be trusted, I thought. Now, after talking to Phil Gaines, I understand what happened. Phil Gaines is the Director of South Carolina State Parks. Phil believes your park is the most important park. Phil explains how you become connected to your park by living and working, surrounded by the beauty. You become passionate about what is around you and believe your park is indeed the most important park. Phil may serve as a Director, but his heart is still in the field. He visits each State Park in South Carolina every year and connects with the staff and visitors. Phil also discusses the State Parks Leadership School, a cooperative effort of America's State Parks to develop the next generation of leaders.
Jack Hartt is Park Manager of Deception Pass State Park. Deception Pass is considered to be the flagship park of Washington State, and many consider Jack to be the flagship Ranger. He has inspired or trained many Rangers who went on to become Park Managers or Assistant Managers. Jack has been manager at Deception Pass State Park, Washington's busiest park, and Riverside State Park, Washington's largest park.
