Jennifer Garner is one of our favorite people; in fact, she's most people's favorite person. She has lived many lives and successfully pursued many careers. She has acted in some of our favorite TV shows and movies, such as Alias, 13 Going on 30, Family Switch, and The Last Thing He Told Me. She co-founded the company that makes all of our favorite mom-approved snacks, Once Upon a Farm, and has led numerous philanthropic efforts. Through it all, we have admired her talent and ability to wear so many hats while also remaining resilient and positive, no matter what life throws at her. There are truly so many different topics to discuss with Jen, so we wanted to dive deep into what we admire most about her – her ability to get through anything all while showing herself grace. Plus, we delve into her career, motherhood, and what's next for her. We'd all be lucky to channel a little bit of Jen in our lives. Laura Dave talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her latest novel, THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. At the heart of this story is a secret that has been hidden for years — one that may have caused the death of Liam Noone, a successful hotel magnate. Nora, his daughter from one of his marriages, is convinced by Sam, his son from another marriage, to join together to see if his death was accidental or something more sinister. Laura talks about Liam's unique hotel properties and what inspired them, and how research finds its way into her writing. She also shares her writing schedule and how she manages her day, as well as the song she had on repeat as she wrote, which is something she always does. This is Laura's second thriller. Her first, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, was adapted by Laura and her husband for Apple TV+. She talks about future screenwriting projects, as well as the book that readers can look forward to next year. After the death of their father, estranged siblings discover their dad may have been keeping a secret for more than 50 years. While his death was ruled accidental, the siblings are afraid something more sinister is at play. It's a slow-burn mystery and family drama and Laura Dave joins the podcast to talk about "The Night We Lost Him." Dave is a #1 New York Times best-selling author who most recently wrote "The Last Thing He Told Me." That book is also hit series on Apple TV starring Jennfier Garner. Dave talks to our host Whitney Clark about the real event that inspired "The Night We Lost Him," her own fears, what it's like working with Garner, and the plans for her next book (a sequel to "The Last Thing He Told Me.").
I have been a huge fan of Laura Dave's since the first time I read Eight Hundred Grapes. Then came, The Last Thing He Told Me, classic, loved, continued my Laura Dave love fest and THEN we get the "soulful suspense" (more on that in the episode) gem, The Night We Lost Him. Laura is a master on storytelling and writing. It was so fun to chat with her about her inspirations, her love for the west coast, page to screen developments and so much more. She is an auto-buy author for me for a reason and after this chat, she will be for you too!

Jen and her longtime friend, Amy Hardin, return together to introduce this previous interview with Jennifer Garner that was one of For the Love's top downloaded episodes of all time. Jen and Amy chat about their favorite Jennifer Garner projects and how impressed they are with her activism and philanthropic work. In the interview itself, Jennifer Garner shares how she navigates life as a mom, an entrepreneur, and an actress. So many of us have followed Jen's career through TV & film, but she takes us back to the early days when she fell in love with theater, doing auditions in New York while she slept on the floor of a friend's home who offered a place to lay her head. We also find out that her first job was working with Melissa Gilbert (Laura Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie fame) and how that eventually led to working with J.J. Abrams in Felicity, who then cast her in her breakout role as the star of Alias. The two Jens discuss everything from what it's like to raise kids as they transition from littles to bigs and what eventually drove Jen's pursuits outside of Hollywood to co-found Once Upon a Farm and become involved with Save the Children. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “Change is hard. I mean, I have a tendency to, or I did when I was younger, where I leapt into living in New York before I thought about living in New York. And then I leapt into moving to LA, and then had to absorb that, wait a minute, I just left this all. That was a big transition for me, because I didn't realize I had built a community for myself in New York.” - Jennifer Garner “I hunted down what organization was really doing work in rural America and Save the Children was all over the world. Our whole global goal is to help kids where no one wants to go and where no one's helping them. So we are in Afghanistan, we're always in the middle of the Ebola crisis, we're always in the middle of helping kids as they're leaving Syria. And we're in those refugee camps and we're in disasters, and we are hand in hand with the Red Cross, and just one of the leading organizations helping kids in the whole world. And in the US, the work is so beautiful. And it's almost unknown, because we're in the little tucked away corners.” - Jennifer Garner “I think food insecurity and poverty in America, it's a little bit invisible, because we want it to be. We choose what we look at. And so, it is, in some ways, easier to look across the globe and see it somewhere else in a country that is so different than ours or with such obvious distinctions. But the food insecurity in America is high, high, high.” - Jen Hatmaker “You know what I love? I love any community. I just like to be in a community.” - Jennifer Garner “What is saving my life right now? I mean, I can't imagine it ever being anything other than girlfriends.” - Jennifer Garner Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Once Upon a Farm - https://onceuponafarmorganics.com/pages/jens-farm Save the Children - https://bit.ly/4dnOuHM 13 Going on 30 - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337563/ The Last Thing He Told Me - https://bit.ly/4d9wEbK Love, Simon - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5164432/ Guest's Links: Jennifer's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jennifer.garner/?hl=en Jennifer's Twitter - https://twitter.com/thejengarner?lang=en Jennifer's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JenniferGarner/ Connect with Jen! The team is set to compete in the 2023 NORCECA Men's Continental Volleyball Championship today (Sept. 5) through Sept. 10 at Charleston Coliseum. The U.S. Men's team will play against Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad & Tobago. This tournament is the last one for the U.S. Men's team until they participate in the qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. If they qualify, the team will play in Paris during the summer games that are scheduled to run from July 26 to August 11, 2024. Tickets for the Charleston event may be purchased online on Ticketmaster or at the Charleston Coliseum box office. Read more: https://wvliving.com/champions-in-charleston/ #2 – From WV NEWS – With only a few weeks left of summer, Marion County officials are encouraging people to step outside and see all the county has to offer while the weather is still nice and warm. “There is still lots of summer left in summer,” said Marion County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Leisha Elliott. “There are concerts at Palatine Park. We've got Traditional Music Day coming up at Pricketts Fort, as well as other activities there. “We have another Hometown Market coming up in September. There are lots of activities that the family can get out and enjoy as far as entertainment, as well as the rail-trails, disc golf and hiking at Valley Falls State Park.” The CVB combined three popular outdoor activities this summer with a kayaking and rail/trail-based geocaching trail. The 32-cache “Fairmont Land or Aquatic Trail” (F.L.O.A.T.) starts in downtown Fairmont, where geocachers can either kayak nearly eight miles along the river to find 23 caches or get on the rail-trail to find eight additional caches. Both trails end at Pricketts Fort State Park, where an additional “bonus” cache is available to find. Looking for additional fun-filled activities? Her next flick is set to be Netflix's “Family Switch,” which involves body switching, so it's only natural that there are a few nods to “13 Going on 30.” “We overtly mention ‘13 Going on 30',” director McG said. “There's a meta sort of runner in the movie because I like showing the audience that kind of respect. We get it, we get it.” The movie will see Garner finding herself in the body of her teenage daughter, played by “Wednesday” star Emma Myers. The film also stars Ed Helms from “The Office” and everyone's favorite, Rita Moreno. Garner's character isn't the only person switching bodies, everyone in the family gets in on the action, including the dog. Garner was born in Houston, Texas, but moved to Charleston, West Virginia at age three. She is a graduate of George Washington High School. Welcome back! It's another solo episode for Kevin and this is solely everyone else's fault. What are they thinking having lives and families?!? This is a short one so Kevin keeps it nice and concise. He starts with a quick recap of The Last Thing He Told Me before jumping into the new Peacock show, Mrs. Davis, which he thoroughly enjoyed. After a very small tangent into the new DCU he redirects over to The Diplomat on Netflix. Kevin then finishes the show with the very promising Love & Death on HBO. As always, thanks for watching! Next week should be beefy with some Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and a whole lot more. If you haven't yet, don't forget to like and subscribe and share us on socials! Have a great week!

This book is a fictional mystery and would be a perfect traveling companion. Than, to close out this episode, Suzanne will share this week's “Something to Sip on”. This is a quote, or words of wisdom, that are shared to inspire others. So, enjoy…& until next week…Cheers!! Episode Notes Why hello everyone and welcome to this week's episode of Orange Juice Optional! Listen in as Suzanne and Michelle FINALLY discuss July's book of the month, ‘Whereabouts' by Jhumpa Lahiri. Even though the discussion is a little late, both ladies agree that it's unlike anything they've ever read before and well worth the wait. For them, this book proved to be a creative piece of literature that personally touched their hearts on both an individual, and collective level. During this discussion, they will share several excerpts from the book that demonstrate the power of observation and use of descriptive words (Lahiri, Jhumpa. Whereabouts. 29 March 2022. Vintage Publishing.) You know it is a positive read (and experience) when Suzanne places this book on her top 10 favorite books of all time. Before this episode concludes, Michelle reminds listeners that ‘The last thing he told me' by Laura Dave, is the book that they will be reading in August. This book is a fictional mystery that takes place in Northern California and Austin, Texas. Than, to close out this episode, Michelle will share this week's “Something to Sip on”. Episode Notes Why hello everyone and welcome to this week's episode of Orange Juice Optional! Listen in as the Suzanne and Michelle talk about an event that not only frustrated Suzanne, but almost put an end to her vacation before it even started. While this frustration came in the form of a new scenario, it was an all to familiar pattern to Suzanne. The ladies then talk about reacting to a situation, but then feeling judged by others who only witnessed a moment of the whole situation. The ladies then discuss the different groups of people that they met while traveling. Mini-societies that really do mimic the people you meet in everyday life. Before this episode wraps up, Michelle introduces the book that they will be reading in August. This month's book is “The last thing he told me” by Laura Dave. This book is a fictional mystery that takes place in Northern California and Austin, Texas. Then, to close out this episode, Suzanne share this week's “Something to Sip on”. Even though we're focused on starting summer and looking forward to all our fun plans for the season, it's not just time to look ahead. Today I'm joined by my good friend (and good friend of the show) Jenny Rapson, and we are taking a look back. Jenny is a longtime friend of The Couch, but she's also now hosting her own podcast. Disaster Queen examines disasters that have taken place in the past and reflects on what these parts of our history mean and what we can learn from them. So in honor of her new show, Jenny joined me this week to go back 30 years to the pop culture of 1993. I know. It's incredibly rude of us to point out that 1993 was three decades ago. I promise you we're just as upset about this as you are. Still, existential crises aside, it's fun to remember the biggest movies, TV shows, music, and news of 1993. So much happened that year! And, of course, because this is The Couch, where side notes and rabbit trails are always welcome, we also get into the joys of growing up without social media and generally unsupervised, reboots from Animaniacs to Murphy Brown, our eternal love of Whitney Houston, my incredibly picky taste when it comes to reading thrillers, and our shared experience of failing our first driving tests. It's a whirlwind and a virtual trip in the time machine—and I know you're going to love it. Let's get started! MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The Couch episode #40 (Jenny and I look back at 1994) The first Got Milk commercial (Aaron Burr!) The top songs from each week in 1993 NOT-SO-GUILTY PLEASURES: A Small Light on Disney+ Looking for more tame thrillers like The Last Flight (free on Kindle Unlimited right now), The Lies I Tell, I Have Some Questions for You, and The Last Thing He Told Me (adapted into a new series on Apple TV+) DON'T FORGET: Join The Couch on Facebook! It's so much fun! Find Jenny on Twitter, Instagram, and her website. Find her new podcast, Disaster Queen, on Instagram or wherever you stream podcasts! Oh, you guys, you will never believe what Tanya did last week! She met the milestone of her 100th barre class, and she was honored by her instructor and barre mates with a party and the privilege of signing her name. I'm so, so PROUD of my friend and know you are too. Everything else we talk about kind of pales in comparison to this accomplishment, but we cover all the things and have a great time doing it. We discuss what we're watching and listening to, the games we're playing, the appointments we're making, and the desserts we're creating. When I say “we”, I mean Cliff. He masterminded a moonshine banana pudding cake that even impressed Jarrett. It all wraps up with another installment of cute and fun. You're the best! In this week's (comically belated) episode, we're tackling Kathryn's Spring 2023 GOBO picks, the shoulder devil and should angel of the Mom TV genre: The Diplomat (good, currently streaming on Netflix) and The Last Thing He Told Me (preposterous, not in a fun way, currently streaming on Apple TV+). In addition, we take some time off from discussing wood turning, houseboats, and even-weirder-than-Sweeney-Todd Stephen Sondheim musicals to discuss the current writer's strike in Hollywood and what's driving writers' discontent. Listen and enjoy and pretend this came out on Thursday like it was supposed to!
