Seattle's about to elect a mayor who gets $2,200 a month from mommy and daddy for daycare while running on a "working class" platform - you can't make this stuff up! Katie Wilson, socialist candidate leading in polls, has never held a substantial job, run a business, or managed a payroll, yet wants to oversee Seattle's $9 billion budget and 41 departments. Meanwhile, her Transit Writers Union has LOST money for three straight years with a budget smaller than what the city spends on coffee. But hey, she made a slick video with grandma explaining why families should "take care of each other" - because nothing says fiscal responsibility like needing parental subsidies at age 43. Here's the kicker: she supports defund the police while Seattle desperately needs more cops, and her "solutions" include rent control and social housing (because those always work, right?). Is anyone surprised that Seattle voters are about to choose inexperience over competence again? What could possibly go wrong when you elect someone whose biggest accomplishment is organizing volunteers? Subscribe for the inevitable trainwreck coverage - this is going to be podcast gold for months!
Seattle's about to elect a straight-up socialist mayor who can't even afford to live in the city she wants to run – and gets $2,200 monthly from her parents at age 43. What could go wrong? We dive deep into Katie Wilson's housing plan that promises to solve Seattle's sky-high rents with the same progressive policies that created the crisis in the first place. She wants billion-dollar bonds, rent caps, and more red tape while record-low housing permits and fleeing businesses tell the real story. Meanwhile, small businesses get robbed 25 times and grocery stores shut down because crime pays better than commerce. Wilson's solution? Build more "social housing" (aka government-funded ghettos) and clamp down on "bad actor landlords" – because nothing says "affordable housing" like scaring away property investors. This is the same playbook that's sent people fleeing to Texas and Florida, yet Seattle voters are ready to double down. Are we witnessing the death of common sense in real time? Will this be the final nail in Seattle's coffin? Subscribe and grab the popcorn – this socialist experiment is going to provide podcast content for years.

Iowa's rivers run brown, its cancer rates climb, and its politics tilt redder. Pulitzer Prize-winning editor Art Cullen joins to discuss his new book Dear Marty: We Crapped in Our Nest — Notes from the Edge of the World, Iowa, which serves as both lament and call to arms for a farm state choking on its own abundance. Cullen traces how corn and hogs became economic lifelines and environmental nooses, and explains why Democrats keep losing ground by talking culture instead of livelihood. Plus: the American Dialect Society's newly crowned Word of the Year, "6–7," and how linguistic weirdness keeps getting more political. The Spiel: Seattle's mayoral race, where Bruce Harrell's incumbency fatigue meets Katie Wilson's thrift-store populism and the post-Trump urge to loathe whoever's in charge. Seattle is about to elect a 43-year-old mayoral candidate whose biggest qualifications are taking thousands from her parents to survive and busking with a guitar at Pike Place Market. Katie Wilson - a Democratic Socialist who's never held a job for more than a year or run a business - is leading in the polls to manage a $9 billion city budget. What could go wrong? We break down how this political train wreck mirrors the same pattern destroying cities nationwide: progressive activists with zero real-world experience pushing out businesses with their "tax the rich" fantasies while creating government-run grocery stores and alternatives to police. Meanwhile, Amazon fled Seattle for Bellevue, and kids can't afford housing because of layers of bureaucratic nonsense. Is this Seattle's "find out" moment after decades of voting for feel-good policies that drive up costs and crime? Will Gen Z voters learn what happens when you elect someone who can't even manage her own finances to run a major city? The popcorn is ready - this socialist experiment is about to deliver reality's harshest lesson yet.

In preparation for the upcoming Nov. 4th elections, SGN Editors Calvin Jay Emerson and Madison Jones interviewed over video call Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell as he seeks re-election for a second term in office. Seeking to delve deeper into the experiences and decisions that have informed the mayor's approach to life and governance throughout his career, from being an attorney in Omaha, NE to taking on Seattle's top executive spot in 2022, the SGN took a more non-traditional line of questioning going through a plethora of topics with Seattle's mayor spanning from his high school football days, to his thoughts on whether he has genuine progressive bona fides in this race. Since recording and uploading this interview, the SGN has already announced that it will be endorsing Harrell's opponent, Katie Wilson, in the upcoming Nov. 4th election. Patti and Pottymouth have entered the “there's always next year” phase of mourning Wildcard losses and have moved on to pondering such issues as “The Blue Jays wouldn't have to visit the White House.” In our hearts we are simultaneously rooting for a SEA/MIL WS matchup and knocking on all the wood. In our “made it to postseason” boyfriend world we have elder statesmen counseling the kids, Ernie and Jackson lighting things up, and Ben Fricking Rice. In our Police Blotter: Fans Behaving Badly, we have BOS fans harassing Cam Schlittler's family online, and the man LIVES in Boston. He seemed to channel his reaction constructively. Although ARAMARK delights PHI fans with its 9-9-9 box of moderation and thematic treats like Bader Tots, it's really quite a corporate horror with its retaliation against unionized ballpark workers and its contract with approximately 100 detention centers. On a related note, LAD majority owner Mark Walter has profited handsomely from enormous private prison contracts with ICE as well as connections to technology tracking immigrants. We salute Seattle mayoral candidate Katie Wilson, who has a platform we can get behind even before she crosstrains with the Mariners in her campaign slogan, “The Big Dumper's City Needs Public Bathrooms.” Pottymouth would very much like you to read Immigration Detention Inc., The Big Business of Locking Up Immigrants, Nancy Hiemstra & Diedre Conlon. We say, “Sympathy wooze,” “porn management,” and “the burrito came in later.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. In this episode, we take a closer look at Mayor Bruce Harrell's proposed ban on anti-competitive covenants in grocery and pharmacy leases—a move aimed at preventing future food deserts. Is this a genuine step toward saving grocery stores and pharmacies, or, as Erica argues, a form of political posturing in the midst of a mayoral election? We also broaden the discussion to consider alternative solutions, with Sandeep suggesting a re-evaluation of design review processes as a more effective lever for lowering costs and sustaining local businesses. David highlights the critical ideological divide here between Harrell and challenger Katie Wilson, whose socialist-sounding stance on publicly backed grocery stores offers a stark contrast to Harrell's market-oriented approach on remedying food deserts. Whereas Wilson wants the government more involved in the private sector, Harrell would reserve public dollars for things like food assistance. We also discuss turbulence within the King County Regional Homelessness Authority, based on Erica's reporting about accusations of mismanagement and racism against its CEO, Kelly Kennison. This segment unpacks the broader debate about the organization's efficacy and future. We come back to a question we've discussed before: is it time to pull the plug on the KCRHA? Finally, we talk about Mayor Harrell's campaign criticism of Katie Wilson's experience, with Erica challenging the tone and substance of Harrell's attacks.Quinn Waller is our editor. Send us a text!
