Do hear HG Gaurmandal Das, Vice-President Hare Krishna Movement- Mumbai giving lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam. Human society, at the present moment, is not in the darkness of oblivion. It has made rapid progress in the field of material comforts, education and economic development throughout the entire world. But there is a pinprick somewhere in the social body at large, and therefore there are large-scale quarrels, even over less important issues. There is need of a clue as to how humanity can become one in peace, friendship and prosperity with a common cause. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam will fill this need, for it is a cultural presentation for the re-spiritualization of the entire human society. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam should be introduced also in the schools and colleges, for it is recommended by the great student-devotee Prahlāda Mahārāja in order to change the demoniac face of society. I am providing some essential information on the Vedas, The Sacred Text of the Hindus. Vedas are transmitted by word of mouth and it is ordained that The Vedas must be learned by “Listening' Though Five thousand years have passed , the intonation across the length and breadth of India or wherever the Vedas are recited, there is no difference  in the Text or intonation. If there is a variation, as it does in some texts, recitation, it has been grouped and one who knows the Vedas  follows only what is ordained for him . The Vedas are four in Number. Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. Yajur has Sukla Yajur and Krishna Yajur. The Vedas were compiled, not composed by Ved Vyas. The term Vyas means ‘Compiler'. He gave it to his four disciples, Rig Veda to Pailar, Yajur Veda to Vysampayana, Sama to Jaimini and Atharva to Sumanthu. ( Sage Yagnavalkya compiled the Sukla Yajur after having learnt it directly from Surya , the Sun God, for more on this read my post Sukla Yajur) The disciples of these four transmitted the Vedas through their disciples and this practice continues even to-day. 82 . We Reap what We Sow

The physical entities are governed by predictable behaviours and properties. Krishna gives insight into the relationship between the all powerful un-manifested and manifested when he says, “In whatever way people are devoted to Me, in that measure, I manifest Myself to them. All men, in every manner, pursue a path to Me.” (4.11) This is firstly an assurance from the Lord that whatever path we pursue and however contradictory these paths may appear, all of them are paths to the un manifested paramatma. Secondly, the Lord responds like a multi dimensional mirror that reflects and resonates our feelings, thoughts and actions. Thirdly, when we sow a seed, it takes time to attain its full potential of a tree and this time lag prevents us from fully understanding this principle of resonance of paramatma. If we fill our lives with unconditional love and sraddha (trust), love and sraddha are inevitably returned in due course making our lives joyful. If we sow anger, fear, hatred, cruelty or jealousy then the same will be served back making our lives miserable. There are countless examples of these and the point to be noted is that we miss the organic link between the two due to the time lag between the sowing and reaping. This verse operates both at a subtle and gross level. While looking to realise our big dreams, we should never lose sight of small wins that help us realise the supreme consciousness at the experiential level. Krishna further says that "Desiring success of their actions, men adore the devatas, as achievement accruing from an activity is readily attained" (4.12). Devatas are nothing but glimpses of the Paramatma. We have to shed ahankaar to realise Paramatma, but it takes time. Devatas are the halfway point in the journey towards realising the Paramatma while we are still shedding ahankaar.

Yagnyamayaha: One who is an Embodiment of Yagnya - Sacred Sacrifice. Yagnya is the central in the Vedic culture. It purifies the environment, strengthens the Devatas or Phenomenal forces through the ahutis offered, integrates the mind of the performer, brings everyone together. All this is most auspicious. Yajnya sustains the creation. Its not polluting. Yajna symbolically means the co-operative endeavour for a selfless cause. There are also pancha mahayajnas which are mentioned in our scriptures as our duty to replenish the environment for all the harm we are causing to it by our very existence. Lord Shiva is Yajnamayaha because all these are most auspicious. Krishna says that there are four types of devotees. The first one wants to come out of difficulties and misery he is facing in life. Second one desires to have physical possessions and worldly pleasures. Most devotees fall in these two categories irrespective of culture, gender, belief systems and so on. Krishna says that these two kinds of devotees pray and perform rituals to various Devatas. It is akin to approaching an appropriate doctor based on the ailment one suffers from. Krishna further says that the desires of these devotees are fulfilled because of their Shradha. It is in essence, a form of surrender. The following example will illustrate Shradha. Two farmers who have adjacent farms decide to dig a well to irrigate their farms. The first farmer would dig for a day or two and upon not finding any water would change the location and start digging afresh. The second farmer persistently kept digging at the same place. By the end of the month, the first farmer is left with many ditches and the second one got water from the well. Even when our senses don't find anything tangible (like water in this case), it is inner Shradha that keeps us moving as in the case of the second farmer. Shradha is a fearless positive force and free of doubt. Krishna hints that he is behind this Shradha which results in success. Shradha in our relationships, family ties and profession has the power to achieve miracles. The third kind of devotee is about to cross the boundary of desires. He is a curious person and seeks knowledge of self. The fourth kind is a Gyani(a wise one) and he has crossed the boundary of desires. He sees the Lord in everything and everywhere and has attained union with the almighty.

Maheshwaraha – The Great God. A King of a country, a Devata, a great achiever, a Siddha are called as the Lord. Shiva is the Lord of all Lords. Though Shiva is sitting quietly in Kailash and appears to have no ambition or goals etc., yet He is the Greatest of the Gods. In our culture we worship the 5 main forms called as Panchayatana – Lord Shiva, Shakti, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha & Surya. If Kartikeya also is added it becomes – Shanmata or 6 Major forms of the Lord. Amongst these, 4 of them are from Lord Shiva’s family. Hence HE has the greatest number of devotees in the Hindu Fold. Devatas, Asuras, Bhuta, Preta, Pisacha also worship the Lord apart from the humans. Animals also worship Him. In Nirgun Nirakar worship Shiva is called Sadashiva and in Sagun Sakar He is called Maheshwarah. He is the Lord and He is Great because All those who are rejected by the world are accommodated by the Lord. He is great because of His Compassion. He is Great because He revels in the Greatest(Infinite) and inspires us to seek the Greatest. Seek the Highest.
