The Ashtavakra Gita is a short treatise on Advaita Vedanta which systematically deals with the mystical experiences of the individual in their quest for truth, transcendental peace and bliss. It was composed before the common era, most likely between 500-400BC. Some scholars claim it was written later, either in the eighth century by a follower of Shankara, or as late as the fourteenth century during a resurgence of Shankara's teaching. The subtle philosophical truths are expounded in the form of a lucid dialogue between the teenager sage Ashtavakra and his royal disciple, the King-seer Janaka. To Ashtavakra, Self-knowledge through direct mystical intuition is the only goal to be reached and experienced in the dynamic silence of one's own deepest meditation.Translated by Bart Marshall

Lost in Lucknow, Found in Mysuru Mr Shankara Ramamurthy is a respected scientist who served for several years in the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), headquartered in Mysuru. In 1994, the Government of India called upon him to undertake an important mission in resolving the conflict between the owners of the rice mills of Punjab and the Union Government. In the middle of this assignment, he was stuck because of a major slip on his part. What was the challenge, and how was it resolved? How did Swami prepare him for this more than 40 years ago, when he was playing on the sands in front of the Prasanthi Mandir as a child? What is the secret mantra that Bhagawan had given him, which any of us can use in times of difficulty? In this OMS episode, Mr Shankara shares one gem from his treasure trove of incredible moments with Bhagawan.

On the fifth day of the waxing fortnight of the month Vaiśakh, we celebrated one of India's greatest and most celebrated philosopher-mystics of all time, Adi Shankaracharya. While many feel that Advaita Vedanta is juxtaposed to Tantrik philosophy since it features a "Brahman only without Shakti" model. However, there are at least 4 things that make Shankara an out and out Shakta Tantrika in my book. In this talk, as an offering at the lotus feet of the great master, we go over these four "Tantrik" elements in Sri Sri Shankaracharya's life and teaching!May this be an offering to Sri Shankara and the lineage. May it be an offering to Mā Ganga (today is Ganga Saptami) and the unceasing stream of wisdom that has flowed in India sine time immemorial!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

Earlier this year on Swami Vivekananda's birthday we decided to do three back to back lectures focusing on different aspects of the Swami's teaching: the innate divinity of the soul, the oneness of all existence and the harmony of all religions. We start with the idea of one-ness, Advaita which is so wonderfully expressed in Shankara's song "The Six Stanzas on Nirvana" (which you can find the Sanskrit lyrics for here) which Swami Vivekananda himself was very fond of and which he himself translated into English. As such, in this first of three lectures we sing and contemplate the Six Stanzas on Nirvana using Swamiji's translation (which you can read here) making a case for why music is such an important method for practicing and realizing Advaita, Non-Duality! The Aṣṭa mātṝkās (the 8 mothers) are so central to Tantrik theory and practice and oh so mysterious! We first meet these 8 fierce, blood drinking, intoxicated Goddesses in the third act of the Devī Māhātmyam! And so, in this lecture, we'll take up that hymn and we'll list them one by one and consider their dhyāna ślokas (meditation mantras) so that we'll be able to visualize them. Of course, we'll discuss how to worship and why you want to worship them! Most importantly though, I want to discuss some very subtle Tantrik linguistic mysticism concerning the nature of the Sanskrit language and how to it maps on to/ mystically explains Reality! Abhinava Gupta has a really interesting section in chapter 3 of his Tantrāloka on this which we discuss a little bit in this lecture. We open with a comparison of Shankara's Kevalādvaita (classical non-duality) system with the Tantrik version of non-duality (Advaita Śaiva or Śāktadvaita Vāda) to compare Māyā to Śakti to make the case that language is the power of Consciousness to reveal Herself to Herself!Devī Kavacam 9-18 1. Today is a personally special day for me: the birthday of Mahāmaheśvarācharya Rājānaka Abhinavaguptapada, the foremost Shaiva philosopher-saint of our Kaula Trika tradition!Abhinava Gupta is, in my opinion, the brightest mind and the biggest heart India has ever produced and the most brilliant philosopher the world has ever seen, on par with Shankara and the Buddha. Importantly, there are striking parallels between Abhinava Gupta's theistic, devotional non-dualism and that of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. In this lecture, we do a brief biographical sketch of this great master and point out some of the things that make him so admirable and important and above all, relevant for the needs of modern day spiritual aspirants. May this be an offering placed lovingly at his feet, he who is Bhairava incarnate. Vimala-kalāśrāyabhinava-srsti-mahājananīBharita-tanuś ca pañca-mukha-gupta-rucir janakahTad-ubhaya-yāmala-sphurita-bhāva-visarga-mayamhrdayam anuttarāmrta-kulam mama samsphuratāt (1)May my heart, filled with the nectar of the embodied Absolute, which has emerged from the ecstatic union of the Mother who is the radiant and pure ground of ever new creation and the Father who is the five faced Shiva ever expressing and delighting Himself in that creation shine forth! Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches the Mundaka Upanishad which one of the major Upanishads belonging to the Atharva Veda. Mundaka means ''shaved'' like a shaved head. The teachings revealed in this Upanishad are meant to leave the student clean, or shaved of the veil of ignorance. Indeed, the study of this Upanishad has been traditionally confined to the shaven-heads, or the sannyasins, who have renounced everything and devoted themselves exclusively to contemplation. The book consists of 64 Mantras (verses) split across Mundakas (parts) and Khandas (sections) as follows: Mundaka 1 - Khanda 1 - 9 mantras (1.1.1 - 1.1.9) Mundaka 1 - Khanda 2 - 13 mantras (1.2.1 - 1.2.13) Mundaka 2 - Khanda 1 - 10 mantras (2.1.1 - 2.1.10) Mundaka 2 - Khanda 2 - 11 mantras (2.2.1 - 2.2.11) Mundaka 3 - Khanda 1 - 10 mantras (3.1.1 - 3.1.10) Mundaka 3 - Khanda 2 - 11 mantras (3.2.1 - 3.2.11) Reference books: 1. Do you know that 99.99% of the world is run by the belief that if we could just change conditions, we could become safe, secure, significant and free? It's a 180 degrees opposite of what the great teachings taught. The fundamental teaching of Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Lao Tzu, Quan Yin, Shankara were not about improving your human experience in order to be free. They were exactly the opposite. As long as we're trying to manipulate the world to be happy, safe or significant, we are slaves, prisoners, ruled over by an empire of human beliefs in lack, limitation, and separation. Freedom won't just come to you. It has to be earned by right of consciousness. Jesus taught, don't try to save and improve your life. Let it go and seek a deeper connection. Buddha taught, do not engage in craving and aversion, which is basically the incessant need to try to get or get rid of it in order to be free or happy (in other words, manipulating appearances and conditions.) Buddha's whole teaching was based on an idea of the whole false self, that all suffering is based on this part of us that is seeking to manipulate conditions in order to be free. There's no freedom in thinking you have to get something or get rid of something, change something in order to be free. That's not freedom, that's enslavement. Freedom is an inside job. When you can be in a place of peace, regardless of conditions, you're really free. When we drop down a little bit deeper into these life structures – time, health, wealth, work, relationships – you can begin to see how this applies in these areas of your life. It's important to understand that all human experience is a relative projection of our limited perception of infinite perfection. Time is a relative expression of eternity. It's completely relative, bendable and flexible. That's why if you're with somebody you really love, an hour might feel like it went by in a minute. If you're doing something you really hate, a minute feels like an hour. As Einstein described in his theory of relativity, time is relative. It's just a construct. Eternity is what's real. So, if you're trying to base what's real and true on what's in time and space, you're already completely lost. You're as far away from as if truth didn't even exist because time and space are not real. There's a bigger idea that is infinite and eternal. It's trying to emerge as your life, as the world right now. That idea is what's real, not all the relative expressions of it that are sometimes very chaotic, very disturbing and very challenging. None of that is truth or substance. None of that is governed or maintained by Divine life, law or power which means it has no power at all. The only thing governed and maintained by life, law or power is what is true, what is real, what is spiritual – which means it is eternal and unchanging. You want to continuously seek a greater realization of the eternal unchanging truth of our being, or of any of these life structures -time, wealth, and health – to move into a greater state of well-being. You can completely renew and restore each of these structures of your life forever, to the extent that you awake into this truth, because your body, wealth, work, health, and relationships arespiritual, infinite, immortal, eternal ideas and activities that never diminish, that never run out. The more free you get in this truth, you'll be able to reveal an ever-increasing expansion and capacity in every area. To support you in mastering this, listen to the in-depth podcast on the subject, where we break it down and put it into real-life practice TODAY. This will be a real game-changer. Like this episode? Can you imagine if there was only one argument that you had to win? If you could become a master at winning that one argument, everything in your life would work. You would be a winner everywhere in your life. Would that be something worth mastering? Well, there's only one problem in all of human existence, and that is our belief and perception of separation from Source. There is a something, an isness that is whole, complete and perfect, that is perfection itself, life itself. It never is born. It can never die. It has no beginning or end. It can't be improved upon and it can't be diminished. It is the very source and substance, cause and effect, power and presence, principle and reality of all existence. It's nature is good. It's nature (not a good that's opposite of a bad, but in all good) is an infinite, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent good that has nothing outside of it and nothing else within it except its own goodness. Now, if you could just get what I just said, I don't mean just intellectually but have a realization of it, you will have won the argument because that's the truth principle – oneness, wholeness, perfection, god only, only god, love only, only love. However, that's not our experience. Our life experience is the relative perception and projection of this infinite perfection. So, we don't experience the one real life directly. We experience through our perception, through the filters of our mind and awareness which become beliefs and habits, which create circumstances and conditions. That is what we call life experience. Life experience can be all over the place. It literally can be anything depending on what dimension you're in and how much you're willing to believe in something. You can pretty much experience anything. That doesn't necessarily tell you what is reality, just as your beliefs don't tell you what reality is. They tell you your best guess at it and your emotions don't tell you reality. They tell you what you believe. The reason for this is because life is infinite. There's one mind, one consciousness, the mind of God, the intelligence of the universe, the all-knowing, all-containing, all-possessing, perfect mind. You're a center in it, and it's unfolding. So, you have the capacity to tap into it but it's all within this consciousness that is within you. This is why Jesus said, “Take no thought for your life, for the clothes you'll put on and the food, wherewithal you shall be clothed… but seek first the kingdom of heaven.” Then, he said, “And then all those things you've been striving after, those will be added unto you.” Buddha also taught us to go within. Lao Tzu, Guanyin, Shankara and the greatest masters and teachers all said that ultimately the solution and the answer to everything outside of you is inside of you – either go within or you'll go without. Ultimately, the greater the realization of your true self, your true nature, the realm of truth, and your connection, communion, and identification with that, the more everything resolves itself and your life reveals more and more bounty, abundance, and goodness. That's why it also says in the Bible, “If you dwell in the secret place of the Most High, under the shadow of the Almighty, no hurt, no harm can come down in your dwelling place.” I'm talking about this dimension with you – consciousness. Now, what does that have to do with the only argument you ever have to win? Well, in the most basic sense, as I mentioned above, the only lie is that you're separate from this ultimate reality or ultimate good. That's the one and only problem, this sense of separation from it. So, the only solution is the realization of your oneness within. To support you in mastering this, listen to the in-depth podcast on the subject, where we break it down and put it into real-life practice TODAY. This will be a real game-changer. Like this episode?
