On our latest weekly roundup, we have a happy update to Terri's dog-boarding dilemma. Cousin dog to the rescue! What we're watching: On Dancing with the Stars, we went from a (not so) shocking elimination to a kinda shocking non-elimination, as all five semi-finalists went through to the finale. Go, Alyson and Sasha! And Ariana and Pasha! And Jason and Daniella! And Xochitl and Val! And even Charity and Artem! On The Gilded Age, season 2, episode 6, “Warning Shots" were fired in both the union battles and the opera wars, Ada's honeymoon ended very abruptly, and Marian was put on the spot in the worst way. Catherine's library find this week is both a book and a concept: Folded Book Art. We agree that it looks very cool, but you probably won't find us trying it ourselves. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed our kids' special skills (December 5, 2022), our own parenting skills (December 4, 2015), and what makes a good-enough Christmas (December 5, 2019). Next week, our TV watch will cover the Dancing with the Stars finale and "Wonders Never Cease" (S2 E7) on The Gilded Age. On our latest weekly roundup, we discuss the challenges of dog boarding and the implications for family travel as the winter holidays approach. What we're watching: As always, Dancing with the Stars went all in for Halloween with "Monster Night," with the costuming, hair, and makeup departments working even more overtime than usual (but we still think the scariest dance was when Frankie Muniz played a stalker with very little assistance from hair and makeup). On The Gilded Age, season 2, episode 2, "Some Sort of Trick," featured a great deal of romantical intrigue, with current, past, and possibly future pursuers and partners turning up left and right. Mentioned: The official Gilded Age podcast from HBO.Catherine's library find this week was more TV: A series called Jamestown about the early English settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, from (some of) the creators of Downton Abbey. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed family to-do lists (November 9, 2022), holiday happenings and headaches (November 10, 2021), and the importance of having a vent buddy (November 7, 2019).Next week, our TV watch will cover Music Video Night on Dancing with the Stars and "Head to Head" (S2 E3) on The Gilded Age. I'm so pleased to share this interview with you today. I'm talking with Orazie Cook, the founder of Praline's Backyard. Her impactful dog daycare and boarding facility is inspired by a sobering statistic that affects women and dogs around the country. 10 million people in the US are affected by domestic violence each year. With roughly 50% of Americans owning dogs, that's 5 million dog owners who are impacted. The rough part is, the percentage of domestic violence shelters that can take pets is only about 15%. Orazie plans to make a difference in those numbers by providing housing for pets of individuals who are in a housing transition due to an unsafe relationship. Especially at this time of year, I hope that this episode warms your heart to know that there are people out there making a difference in the world. In addition to talking about the soon-to-be daycare and boarding facility, Orazie shares some great advice about changing careers to follow your passion for pets. Even if you feel that you don't have any pet industry experience on your resume - you do have a skillset and a zone of genius to tap into! Speaking of a zone of genius… Are you a dog walking or pet sitting professional? Head over to petpocketbook.com to check out this all-in-one software to run your business on the go. Off-leash recall reliability is one of the #1 reasons that dog owners choose remote-control electric collar training. In this episode, Alissa and Dona explain the E-Collar that Mountain Dog Spa uses for training. These high-quality remote collars are from E-Collar Technologies, and they give dog owners the ability to control the level of stimulation. The levels range from 1-100, and most dogs are taught commands on levels in the single digits - the very lowest level that the dog can perceive. The patented blunt stimulation of the E-Collar speaks to dogs in a clear language they truly understand. Using low-level pressure-on-pressure-off theory, dogs in Mountain Dog Spa's balanced training program are able to learn skills such as reliable recall (coming back every time the owner calls him/her). Join in next week as we build upon the ideas discussed in this E-Collar episode when Alissa teaches the step-by-step way to achieve a reliable recall with dogs.
