New EasYoga Podcast Episode 178 - Join Gemma in this episode where she talks to special guest Spencer Brewer and Esther Siegel.Spencer has been creating art and music since he was a young boy. For most of his adult life he was in the music business, recording and producing hundreds of records while working as a technician on over 20,000 pianos, crank phonographs and pump organs. Collecting and working on pianos, he eventually found himself creating assemblage art before he knew what it was called. When the music industry collapsed in 2008, he shifted his focus to assemblage art full time.Esther Siegel is a psychotherapist by training who has worked in the field of book art, been active in the scrapbooking world, and created both greeting cards and ‘found art' sculptures. A late-in-life artist, she creates pieces that are a mixture of the whimsical and dark humor. They include Book-Mobiles & Book Art, Twisted Toasters (vintage toasters as the base), Horse People (horse/doll combo), fun repurposed sculptures, small lamps and Altered Barbies.Spencer and Esther are the co-authors of Lost and Found: Assemblage Artists of Northern California. A portion of proceeds from the book will be used to help internationally-acclaimed assemblage artist Larry Fuente, who lost his 8,000-square-foot warehouse of finished pieces and art supplies to a devastating California wildfire. You can find more out about Spencer and Esther here:https://lostandfound.art/https://www.amazon.com/dp/057833772X?ref=myi_title_dphttps://www.facebook.com/lostandfoundassemblagebook/https://www.instagram.com/lostandfound_assemblageartbook/Easyoga Podcast was voted #1 of the Best 15 UK Yoga Podcasts by Feedspot. Today, I'm joined by artists and educators Lenett Partlow-Myrick and Jenny O'Grady to discuss the medium of book art and the transformative workshops that they lead. Lenett describes book art as a way to reimagine the possibility of what books can be, how they're created, and ways that we can interpret them. In their workshops, which they lovingly call “human bonding studios,” they lead groups of people through a journey of self-exploration and genuine connection.  Lenett and Jenny provide space, materials, and a thought-provoking question to get their students started. The focus isn't on the end product, but rather being open to a different way of delving into deep conversations about one's intentions, limitations, and purpose. Lenett and Jenny believe that everyone is an artist and describe what they've witnessed when a group of adults take time to pause and get curious.  In our conversation, we also touch on Lenett and Jenny's collaborative efforts outside of the workshops. They've recently wrapped up “Dos-A-Dos II,” a showcase of book art and poetry called at Howard Community College's Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery. Marriage Quick Tips: Affairs, Communication, Avoiding Divorce, and Saving Your Marriage

Lust—that's a powerful word.  Sometimes people confuse love and lust, and they ask, "Am I in lust or am I in love?" Lust is a desire to mate with an appropriate partner because we are hard-wired to procreate, part of our brains are always looking to make a baby. So the lust part of us is thinking about pleasure, not relationships. Let's look at love. Dr. Sternberg says love has three basic components, intimacy, passion, and commitment. He says lust in the relationship called love is not just for that one-time satisfaction; it's a craving to be one in terms of the other person's life. That person to be the one in your life, which then requires intimacy, transparency, vulnerability, and openness. That's what develops trust; you let me see who you are, what you think, what you feel. You let me know who you are. And, I let you see who I am. And we begin to mesh our lives together, I won't find you perfect, and you won't find me perfect. Conceived over thirty years of painting and creating in his studio, this book is Makoto Fujimura's broad and deep exploration of creativity and the spiritual aspects of “making.” What he does in the studio is theological work as much as it is aesthetic work. In between pouring precious, pulverized minerals onto handmade paper to create the prismatic, refractive surfaces of his art, he comes into the quiet space in the studio, in a discipline of awareness, waiting, prayer, and praise. Ranging from the Bible to T. S. Eliot, and from Mark Rothko to Japanese Kintsugi technique, he shows how unless we are making something, we cannot know the depth of God's being and God's grace permeating our lives. This poignant and beautiful book offers the perspective of, in Christian Wiman's words, “an accidental theologian,” one who comes to spiritual questions always through the prism of art. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

It's truly amazing the way the wisdom from Art of War has lasted, and most likely will last much longer. There's tremendous advice relevant to those who may not be in war, but are vying for position or competing in some way. The wisdom in this book is timeless, although it may not apply in the same way. -Sun Tzu"If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles." While many of us will never direct troops in a war, we may lead a company, fight a political battle, or coach a team (even if it's little league). Each of these is like going to war, but with lower costs. And, much of what works for war will work in other battles as well. Grab your copy of Sun Tzu's Art of War here. If you're looking for a quick, easy read that is packed with wisdom, then check out Art of War. The short excerpts of wisdom are in an easily digestible format and are packed with a lot to contemplate. Like Meditations or the Tao Te Ching, it is a collection of excerpts rather than a large, continuous work. I think this makes it easier to break down and digest what you're reading. I really recommend you grab your copy and read it for yourself. Then, let me know what you think. Enjoy solving today's problems with the wisdom of the past? This video accompanies the exhibition entitled, Rebound: Dissections and Excavations in Book Art. Curated by Karen Ann Myers, Assistant Director of the Halsey Institute, Rebound brings together the work of five mixed-media artists from around the world who, using books as a point of departure, sculpt, scrape, bend, and carve to create astonishing compositions. Doug Beube, Long-Bin Chen, Brian Dettmer, Guy Laramée, and Francesca Pastine transform various types of literature and/or printed books through sculptural intervention. The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art commissioned Rebound artist, Long-Bin Chen, to create a site-specific sculptural work that is on view in the Rotunda of the Marlene and Nathan Addlestone from May 23 -- October 12, 2013. Chen created the work during a residency (May 1 - 23, 2013), using books from the Charleston community. College of Charleston students Tommy Fox and Jordan Fowler, and sculpture studio technician Michael Morrison were Chen's studio assistants during the residency. The Friends of the Library at the College of Charleston are sponsors of Long-Bin Chen's residency and installation.
