On our latest weekly roundup, we discuss the challenges of dog boarding and the implications for family travel as the winter holidays approach. What we're watching: As always, Dancing with the Stars went all in for Halloween with "Monster Night," with the costuming, hair, and makeup departments working even more overtime than usual (but we still think the scariest dance was when Frankie Muniz played a stalker with very little assistance from hair and makeup). On The Gilded Age, season 2, episode 2, "Some Sort of Trick," featured a great deal of romantical intrigue, with current, past, and possibly future pursuers and partners turning up left and right. Mentioned: The official Gilded Age podcast from HBO.Catherine's library find this week was more TV: A series called Jamestown about the early English settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, from (some of) the creators of Downton Abbey. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed family to-do lists (November 9, 2022), holiday happenings and headaches (November 10, 2021), and the importance of having a vent buddy (November 7, 2019).Next week, our TV watch will cover Music Video Night on Dancing with the Stars and "Head to Head" (S2 E3) on The Gilded Age. On our latest weekly roundup, Catherine is sorely tempted by some very cute kittens (it's easy because they live 2,000 miles away). Mentioned: Heidi Wrangles Cats on Instagram. What we're watching: It was time for that Dancing with the Stars staple, "My Most Memorable Year." As always, that meant lots of emotional, barefoot contemporary dances (and a bunch of Viennese waltzes) followed by judging that seems extra harsh, what with all the hearts on all the sleeves. We also returned to The Gilded Age with season 2, episode 1: "You Don't Even Like Opera." Once again, there is scheming, secrets, and many, many elaborate hats. Mentioned: Commentary on the show from the Fug Girls (on their website for season 1 and their Substack for season 2) and Alan Sepinwall at Rolling Stone.Catherine's library find this week spotlights a series called the Food Group, from illustrator Pete Oswald and author Jory John. Check out The Bad Seed, The Good Egg, The Big Cheese, and many more.In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed signs of senior-parent-itis (October 31, 2022), Halloween hassles (October 31, 2019), and the scariest places we've been (November 1, 2016).Next week, our TV watch will cover "Monster Night" (Halloween) on Dancing with the Stars, and "Some Sort of Trick" on The Gilded Age. A co-owner and President of Gameday Operations of the Carolina Disco Turkeys, Greg Sullivan joins the Lounge! The Disco Turkeys are a first-year team in the All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA), and Greg talks about how the team came about! What led him to want to take ownership of a baseball team? What did he do before this venture? WHERE IN THE WORLD DID THE NAME DISCO TURKEYS COME FROM FOR THE NAME? He answers them all!Richey asks how they go about getting the players for the team. Since they are an amateur baseball league, where do the players get housed? In a year that we've gone through, Greg tells about the hurdles that come from that, and what they are doing to try and keep everyone safe according to guidelines.Sam brings up that they are in The Lounge, and they have the Disco Turkeys owner hanging out, and that SHOULD mean there should be SOME SORT of official relationship... Greg agreed! SO, the Carolina Disco Turkeys became the Official Team of the 500 Section Lounge! We have audio proof... IT HAPPENED, and IT IS BINDING... we think! The guys asked about game day. How busy has it been, up to the time of recording? What kind of promotional nights are there? DO FANS GET TO KEEP FOUL BALLS? Being a league with teams so close, how far are the road trips? The guys covered so much, it was just an amazing chat with the co-owner and President of Gameday Operations of OUR Carolina Disco Turkeys! Little Matt was on baby duty, so he didn't make it this week, but he will be back next week! Today a friend brought my attention to the fact that newspapers are saying that divorce filings are up by 40 percent as couples spend time together in quarantine. Divorce requests currently can't be processed fast enough in China, as couples come out of quarantine. Trauma and fear can bring out our worst sides and make us defensive.  Old resentments get exacerbated and people don't have space to process things alone and to cool down. As a couples counselor and coach, I am always on the side of that relationship. I'm pulling for it to get stronger or at least to remain in place.  So, here are 12 things to keep in mind that might help: Sometimes Adults Need a Time-Out Too Avoid Doing The 4 Horsemen & What to do Instead Think About Your Kids Don't Make Major Decisions When Upset Look for the Wounded Child in Your Mate Learn How to Self-Soothe Do Something that Raises Your Vibration Spend Some Time Remembering the Good Memories & Good Things about Your Mate Consider Marriage Counseling or Couples coaching online Practice Meditation or Some Sort of Relaxation Increase The Good Take Responsibility for Your Part Remember you can get through this and it is not your baseline.  Be willing to look at the part that you are playing in this dance, instead of just playing ‘the blame game.' You can get a copy of my new book, ‘Marriage and the Law of Attraction: The Secret to Creating Your Perfect Relationship,' on Amazon.  It walks you through how to improve your marriage from the inside-out without expecting your partner to change.  It will help you recognize all the ways you can powerfully create the relationship you want, by creating your marriage from the inside- out.  There's no time like the present. Welcome to The Dirty Bits of History. I’m Tawny Platis, a professional voice actor, who gives a casual, and comedic southern Californian retelling of the sexy, scandalous, salacious, fierce, funny, and freaky bits of history your teacher probably left out. Stay tuned after the episode or take a peek at the show notes for The Dirty Bits After Dark: Catching Up With Tawny and George, our contact info, coming attractions, and a special thank you message to our producers. For commercial-free episodes, visit Patreon.com/DirtyBits. Now, enjoy the show. If you aren’t familiar with Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, they were writers and socialites who became the poster children of what we now call, “The Jazz Age.” Scott seems to be best known for writing, “The Great Gatsby” and less well known for mercilessly plagiarizing his wife, Zelda. They’re both notorious for alcoholism, infidelity, mental illness, and just generally causing a scene in general during the 1920s and 30’s.After nearly a century, why are we still so obsessed with the artists? What is it about Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald that has kept them relevant generation after generation? The academic answer would be that we remain fascinated by the duality of narcissistic geniuses and reckless self-destruction. I personally find the answer to be that America has always loved to stop and gawk at a gnarly trainwreck. And the Fitzgeralds were the gnarliest of trainwrecks. Per usge, to better understand what’s going on here and get the full picture, we have to go back to the very beginning. And because she got the shit end of the stick for so long, I’m starting out with Zelda. If anything sounded goofy in this episode, it probably was! Don’t take my word for it - always do your own research and make sure what you’re reading is from a verified, reputable, and academic source.Sources:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2322760/The-Great-Gatsbys-heartbreaker-F-Scott-Fitzgeralds-fatal-obsession-love-inspiration.htmlDinitia Smith (September 8, 2003). Our show reconstructs books that have been divided into thirds and assigned to three different hosts. We then recap the book in full over three episodes. In this episode, Linzi recaps the first third of Some Sort of Spell by Frances Roding. In this episode, we meet the Bellaire family and our protagonist Beatrice. We also learn about salmon moose, what Londoners use as weapons, and the most unnerving thing one can do after you try to scratch their eyes out. --- Check out Kate and Courtney's podcasts! Find it on your regular podcatcher (if it's not iTunes) and follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook! --- From the back cover:   She didn't ask to be rescued. Beatrice's half sister had done a lot of crazy things, but inviting Elliot Chalmers to temporarily share their home while his was being renovated--that was the limit! Everyone knew that Beatrice and Elliott had never seen eye to eye over her dedication to her orphaned siblings. He'd even nicknamed her "Cinders." Well, handsome prince or no, she hadn't invited him to interfere. And although silently grateful for the added household discipline, Beatrice drew the line where Elliott seemed most intent on crossing--her personal life! -- Some relevant characters: Beatrice Bellaire: aka "Cinders" and "the runt of the litter." Raised her siblings after they were orphaned. Isn't a good driver at the best of times (is not Rain Man). Cooks, cleans, and has endemic breasts that knock over bystanders. Elliot Chalmers: under 6'. Has GIANT hands. Extremely presumptuous and creepy. NOT related by blood to Beatrice. Lucilla: Beatrice and Elliot's half-sister. Not nice. Mirry: Beatrice's sister. Mime? William: Beatrice's brother that isn't a twin. Thinks Playboy gives you pimples. Benedict and Sebastian: Beatrice's twin brothers. And we’re off! It took us between 10 and a million hours to create 32 minutes of usable audio for episode 001. Is this normal? Oh well. The important thing is F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby--#1 on the list of most essential novels of the 20th century and one of our personal faves! In this, our maiden episode, we’re talking love, loss, the American Dream, and a glorious moment in high school where Jess launched a shot-put into her own head in pursuit of a boy. My, wouldn’t Gatsby be proud? To reread with us, grab a copy of The Great Gatsby at your local bookstore or neighborhood library, or download it from your favorite digital book space.Use the comments below to re:spond with your story of rereading The Great Gatsby, crazy theories, favorite quotes, and anything else Gatsby related. We can't wait to Re:Read with you, rereaders! Fun Facts! At F. Scott Fitzgerald's funeral service, the American wit Dorothy Parker is supposed to have murmured, ‘"the poor son-of-a-bitch" (a quotation from The Great Gatsby). At one time or another while writing, Fitzgerald considered all of these alternate titles for Gatsby: Among Ash-Heaps and Millionaires; Trimalchio; Trimalchio in West Egg; On the Road to West Egg; Under the Red, White, and Blue; Gold-Hatted Gatsby and The High-Bouncing Lover. Good choice, F. Scott. F. Scott Fitzgerald's last royalty check before he died was for $13.13. Ready to Re:Read Deeper?Check out NPR book critic Maureen Corrigan’s beautiful, funny, poignant love letter to Gatsby: So We Read On: How the Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why it Endures. For a deeper understanding of the author, consider Fitzgerald scholar Matthew J Bruccoli’s Some Sort of Epic Grandeur: The Life of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
