Break 1: KIA MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Celebration To Honor Mall of Georgia's 25th Anniversary The Mall of Georgia is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a party featuring vendors, live music, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will include city representatives and Gwinnett Chamber members. Since opening in 1999, the mall has been a popular shopping and dining destination, known for its unique shopping village and historic murals. It continues to expand with new businesses. Erika Bridges, the mall's marketing director, expressed gratitude for community support. Owned by Simon Property Group, the mall remains a key part of regional growth. STORY 2: Georgia Gwinnett College discovers bacteria in Joro spider Joro spiders, first spotted in Georgia a decade ago after arriving from Asia, are most visible in September and lay eggs by mid-October. Dr. James Russell and student Nicholas Mizera from Georgia Gwinnett College discovered that Joro spiders are infected with Wolbachia, a common bacteria in insects. While Joro spiders can't transmit Wolbachia to humans, the bacteria may cause reproductive barriers in spiders, potentially useful for population control. This concept could extend to other insects like mosquitoes. Mizera's research experience confirmed his passion for biology, and he plans to pursue a doctorate. Russell and Mizera are preparing a paper on their findings. STORY 3: Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 10 Years of Impact Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its "A Brush with Kindness" program, which provides critical home repairs and modifications for income-eligible homeowners in Gwinnett and Walton counties. Over the past decade, the initiative has restored over 300 homes, improving safety and living conditions for senior citizens, veterans, and families in need. The program focuses on essential repairs like exterior painting and accessibility improvements, enhancing community strength and preserving homeownership. For more details, visit habitatgwinnett.org. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank expressed gratitude for the honor, highlighting the stadium's capability to host major events. This will be Atlanta's fourth Super Bowl, with previous games held in 1994, 2000, and 2019. The successful bid was led by the Atlanta Sports Council and various local organizations. Atlanta is also set to host other major events, including the College Football Playoff National Championship and FIFA World Cup. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised the decision, emphasizing Atlanta's readiness to host large-scale events. STORY 5: Gwinnett Issues Bonds to Buy Mall Macy's Stores. What We Know Gwinnett County is advancing its redevelopment plans for the former Gwinnett Place Mall by purchasing the Macy's department and furniture stores for $16.5 million, with the deal closing in November. The county issued bonds at a 4.7% interest rate, raising $17.2 million, and received a AAA bond rating, which Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson highlighted as beneficial for taxpayers. This acquisition adds 23 acres to the county's holdings, totaling 76 acres, and enhances redevelopment flexibility. The "Global Villages" concept will guide the mall's transformation, with most of it being demolished, except for existing anchors. Development partner proposals are expected in early 2025. Break 3: And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on fiber. ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***INGLES 1 FIBER (INTERVIEW)*** We'll have final thoughts after this. Bush in 2003, faces challenges as some lawmakers allege the Biden administration of promoting abortion in the program. PEPFAR has played a crucial role in combating AIDS globally, saving an estimated 25 million lives and preventing infections in infants. Despite enjoying bipartisan support in the past, recent claims have delayed reauthorization and hindered fund disbursement. Critics argue that the allegations lack substance, and PEPFAR's focus remains on HIV prevention and treatment. The delay in funding could impact the program's effectiveness and raise questions about the nation's commitment to global health initiatives. STORY 5: Special toothpaste could save lives of people with peanut allergies A specialized toothpaste containing tiny amounts of peanut could offer a breakthrough in treating peanut allergies. The toothpaste, part of Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT), aims to build patients' immunity by exposing them to small amounts of the allergen over time. In a trial, all participants tolerated the highest dose of peanut toothpaste without severe reactions. OMIT could be a safe and convenient option for adults with food allergies, supporting continued development, according to allergy expert Dr. William Berger. Members of the South Elkhorn Christian Church youth group testified before the legislature's Joint Commission on Race and Access to Opportunity Committee, urging the removal of the exception clause. Advocates argue that the clause has historical ties to discriminatory practices and systemic racism, emphasizing the need for constitutional change. STORY 7: Beer industry enters fray in battle over rum tax benefits The beer lobby is challenging the renewal of a tax benefit for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as the "rum cover-over," claiming it unfairly subsidizes rum-producing competitors. The tax dispute arises amid broader tensions between the beer and spirits industries over the taxation of new alcoholic beverage options. The beer lobby argues that the rum cover-over program benefits large liquor companies and calls for a reevaluation of the program to ensure the territories receive appropriate assistance. The disagreement adds complexity to the potential renewal of the rum cover-over as part of a year-end tax package. We'll have final thoughts after this. Brad Raffensperger has his swagger, again; he spoke earlier this week to the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and had some choice words for reporters, afterwards, about the legitimacy of 2020. First, on the indictments he said he felt "sorrowful," but not sorry, to be sure. He also stood his ground (as he did on the "perfect beautiful" phone call) on the merits of the outcome, and I decided it's a good time to revisit that call and point out how 2022 election results are the guiding light the rest of the GOP outside Georgia isn't paying attention to. Other topics today include what smells like "voter suppression" in Floyd & Troup Counties, along with another needless round of "use it or lose it" voter purges, a new GPB boss is announced, Donald's REALLY bad day Thursday punctuated by goats blocking his route, How Tommy (coach) Tuberville's blocking military promotions is weakening readiness, there's good news on the preeclampsia front (except if you'd prefer to end the pregnancy, of course) and a thumbs up from USA Today regarding Atlanta's street art.

The Gwinnett Chamber is pleased to announce the appointment of Marlene M. Fosque to its executive leadership team. Fosque will serve as the new Vice President of Economic Development, spearheading the Partnership Gwinnett initiative.
A former Doraville police officer, Miles Bryant, has been indicted by a Gwinnett County grand jury on charges related to the murder of 16-year-old Susana Morales, who went missing last summer and whose remains were found in February. The four-count indictment, including malice murder and felony murder, also charged Bryant with kidnapping and false report of a crime. Police believe Bryant kidnapped and killed Morales between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. on July 26, 2022, dumping her body in a wooded area near Drowning Creek off State Route 316. Since his arrest, other incidents have emerged and are under investigation. The body of a child matching the description of a 4-year-old boy who went missing into the Yellow River Saturday night was discovered Sunday by rescue crews, Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services officials said. Officials said the body was discovered just after 10:30 Sunday morning. The rescue crews had resumed their search at 8:15 a.m. at Yellow River Park after suspending their search due to nightfall on Saturday. Fire officials said three boats were deployed into the river and worked with teams on the riverbanks to begin a grid search from the location in the river where witnesses placed the victim who was last seen downstream towards the Annistown Road bridge. "Search teams located a pediatric male that matched the description provided by the mother at 10:39 a.m. this morning," Capt. Ryan McGiboney said. "The body was removed from the water and turned over to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office for investigation." Officials asked for prayers for the family. The missing child was reported at 5:41 p.m. on Saturday when firefighters responded to a report of a river rescue at Yellow River Park, which is located at 3050 Juhan Road SW in Stone Mountain. Three firefighters in Georgia were awarded the Gwinnett Chamber's Gold Medal of Valor for their bravery in rescuing a mother and daughter from the fast-moving waters of the Chattahoochee River. The trio of Firefighter Paramedic Capt. Jason Weese, and FireMedic Seniors Fred Rosser and Matthew Burton, train weekly to familiarize themselves with the conditions of the river, especially when water from Lake Lanier is released through Buford Dam, which causes the current to quickly pick up. The mother and daughter were out on a family fishing trip when the Army Corps of Engineers began releasing water from the dam, causing the river's water level to rise and its current to speed up. Gwinnett players racked up top honors on the Sandy's Spiel All-State Basketball Teams for the 2022-23 season. The award-winners included three first-team selections on the All-Georgia Team, which features the top players from all classifications — Brookwood's Diana Collins and Wesleyan's Chit-Chat Wright on the girls list and Grayson's Gicarri Harris on the boys list. Lanier's Osmar Garcia was second-team All-Georgia, while Buford's Ava Grace Watson, Grayson's Tatum Brown, Hebron Christian's Aubrey Beckham and Norcross' Jania Akins were honorable mention All-Georgia. Head over to Gwinnett Prep Sports dot com for a list of honorees. Andrew Carnes, Partnership Gwinnett's former Vice-President of Economic Development, has left the economic development organization after nearly a decade to join Georgia Power as the Community and Economic Development Manager for the northeast region. One of the nation's largest producers of podcast programming now calls Gwinnett County's Gas South District home. Business RadioX, which operates dozens of online radio studios across the U.S., has relocated its Gwinnett studio into the newly renovated Gas South Convention Center in Duluth. In addition to acquiring more broadcast space, the new studio will produce exclusive programming to promote news and upcoming events on the Gas South District campus, which includes the Gas South Arena, Gas South Convention Center, Gas South Theater, and the Hudgens Center for the Arts. Since opening its doors in 2012, the Gwinnett Business RadioX studio has interviewed more than 3,000 local business leaders while producing some of the network's most popular programming including the acclaimed “Celebrating Powerhouse Women” podcast series, the Gwinnett Chamber's “Voice of Business” podcast, and the studio's long-running award-winning signature show “Gwinnett Business Radio”. A man from Duluth was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his girlfriend at a restaurant in Marietta. According to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office, Jose Ramon Lemus shot his girlfriend, Janice Ross, in the neck after becoming angry at her for asking about another woman he had been communicating with. He then fled into the woods but was apprehended by police within an hour with the help of a police K-9. Ross died at the scene of the shooting. During the sentencing, the victim's family members spoke about the impact of losing her, with her 14-year-old daughter saying, "I won't ever get my mom back and it hurts." Atlanta's Chick-fil-A is planning a $1 billion expansion to open restaurants in Asia and Europe, with a goal to have a presence in five international markets by 2030. Despite being the third-largest fast-food chain in the US, with more than 2,700 restaurants, only a few of these are overseas. The move is aimed at testing how Chick-fil-A will perform in international markets to learn and innovate, according to CEO Andrew Cathy. Chick-fil-A has previously launched an expansion in South Africa that lasted five years, and in 2019 it opened but soon closed a London-area restaurant due to protests about anti-gay marriage statements made by Chick-Fil-A's former CEO. Gwinnett Technical College has experienced a surge in enrollment for the third consecutive semester, with a nearly 10% increase in enrollment numbers for the 2023 spring semester compared to last year. Gwinnett Tech's President, Glen Cannon, credits the increase to the opening of the new Emerging Technologies building and the renovation of other buildings, the Dual Enrollment programs for high school students, and the expansion of academic programs to feed high-demand careers. The enrollment growth indicates that Gwinnett Tech provides the skills needed in today's competitive job market and is on a growth trajectory for the future. Gwinnett County legislators, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson and U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath participated in a remembrance marking the two-year anniversary of two shootings that shook the local Asian-American community. The shootings happened on March 16, 2021 at two Asian-owned spas in metro Atlanta, one in Atlanta and another in Cherokee County, and resulted in the deaths of eight people. Many people have labeled the shootings as racially-motivated hate crimes because most of the victims were Asian-Americans. The anniversary brought pledges from elected officials to tackle hate crimes and gun violence. US Representative Lucy McBath, said supporters of gun control legislation must rededicate themselves to fighting for laws to be passed address gun violence. She highlighted the passage, last year, of the Safer Communities Act in Congress. Gun control is something which has been a signature issue for the congresswoman, who lost her son to gun violence more than decade ago. It is becoming harder for frontline workers — such as police officers, firefighters, nurses and school teachers — who work in Gwinnett County to also live in the county, according to the head of the Atlanta Regional Commission's Board of Directors. ARC Board Chairman Kerry Armstrong said housing is a major issue facing Gwinnett County, and the Atlanta region as a whole, as he addressed the Gwinnett Chamber this week. Armstrong said there are a number of issues that face the metro Atlanta region, including transportation, resiliency in areas such as water, homeland security, infrastructure and equal access to opportunity remain challenges the area has to continually address. But, he added that a lack of affordable housing is an issue that can threaten the region's sustainability if it not addressed, particularly with metro Atlanta's population expected to grow by 1.8 million people — the equivalent of metro Nashville's entire current population — by 2050. The ARC set up the Metro Atlanta Housing Strategy a few years back in an effort to address the housing affordability issue on a regional scale. The strategy is designed to provide local government officials with information about their housing situation, and to show them potential solutions that can be used to address affordability issues. Gwinnett County Police Department officials say violent crime was down in 2022, but they are taking steps to further reduce it by taking a new approach to tackle crimes that involve guns. The department has created a new Gun Crimes Unit that will use technology and data, as well as intelligence gathered by investigators, to connect the guns used during crimes to criminals. The new unit, which currently has two investigators, was launched on February 1. The Gun Crimes Unit is one step the police department announced it is taking to address violent crimes and solve them. Uniform officers are receiving new training on collecting shell casings from crime scenes and they will work more closely with the department's Gang Unit to investigate gun thefts, illegal possession and illegal sales cases. The police department already has some data that sheds light on crimes that involve guns. One such fact that they are highlighting is that 91% of guns which are stolen in Gwinnett County are taken from a vehicle. That has led to the department's Community Affairs Section offering firearm safety and security classes, which are available to all Gwinnett residents. The department is also offering residents free gun locks which can be picked up at the GCPD headquarters as well as all of its precincts. As a youngster racing Bandolero and Legends cars on Atlanta Motor Speedway, Joey Logano won many races, but as a NASCAR Cup Series driver he never got to victory lane at AMS. Until Sunday. Logano started from the pole, dominated the first two stages, and led a race-high 140 laps, but it all came down the last lap. Logano and Brad Keselowski battled the last several laps with Keselowski running the outside line in first and Logano running in second place on the bottom. On the final lap, Logano was able to take the lead and cross the finish line in first. Logano said with all the memories of him and his dad racing at AMS, getting the win was his career coming “full circle.” Registration is open for the 2023 Gwinnett Football League season for both youth football players and cheerleaders. Becca Wilson had a gut feeling that, after her son, Caiden, was hit in the head with a baseball before a game in April 2022, that his injury might be worse than it initially appeared. Caiden, who plays for North Gwinnett High School's baseball team, was knocked unconscious after the ball hit him during batting practice before a game against Loganville High School. He had been loading balls into the pitching machine and couldn't get behind a protective screen in time before a teammate hit a line drive up the middle. Caiden regained consciousness pretty quickly, but had bruises and was repeating himself, so his mother took him to the hospital. That mother's intuition turned out to be right. Caiden had suffered a concussion, temporal bone fracture, traumatic epidural hematoma, nasal bone fractures, uncial herniation, and a subarachnoid hemorrhage. While he was getting a CAT scan in the hospital's emergency department, his condition began to deteriorate, which doctors refer to as decompensating, and he fell into a coma. Doctors immediately took him into surgery to remove a clot and relieve pressure on his brain. Caiden quickly recovered and is back as the starting third baseman for the Bulldogs, just 10 months after his injury. Caiden said his recovery was tough at first, but the prospect of being an athlete again, and getting back to baseball, drove him to get better. Gwinnett-based Rainbow Village, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of families experiencing homelessness, recently announced the addition of three new board members. The new members are Deon Tucker, Susie Collat and Deborah Latham. Deon Tucker is Georgia Power's Metro North Regional Director. In addition to her new role with Rainbow Village, Tucker serves on the board of directors for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Council for Quality Growth, Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation and Gwinnett Technical College. Susie Collat is the former owner of two highly successful businesses — Mayer Electric Supply Company, Inc. and Peachtree Awnings. In addition to serving as a Rainbow Village Board Member, she currently serves on the advisory board of the Special Needs Schools of Gwinnett Board of Directors — where she was president for five years. Deborah Latham, who is newly retired, founded Georgia Tank Lines in 1996. As CEO, she helped fuel the expansion of her trucking company that transported gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and ethanol. In addition to her new role on the Rainbow Village board, Deborah has served on the boards of various nonprofit organizations — including National Association of Women Business Owners, Visions Anew and Good Mews, among others.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
