I have been in a reflective mood of late. Unplugged from my beloved routine of writing an ocean of ads in the middle of the night, I have been examining the lives of people who sharpened their skills to such fine points that they pierced the skies and found themselves embodied in golden beams of light.A larger-than-life personality saturated in dazzling talent is combustible. Give that person the tiniest spark of opportunity and they will instantly be on fire.Ernest Hemingway embodied the sad machismo of the Lost Generation and became a cultural icon. Hunter S. Thompson embodied the psychedelic counterculture of the following generation and became a cultural icon. Arriving at the end of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, both of them shot themselves. But years before he pulled that trigger, Thompson wrote,“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!'”Robin Williams was 27 years old when he encountered the tiny spark of opportunity that embodied him in the golden beams of a career, and a life, on fire. He walked into the living rooms of America as Mork, a visitor to Earth from the planet Ork, in a show called Mork & Mindy that aired on ABC from from 1978 to 1982. Each episode ended with Mork closing his eyes and – through his thoughts – contacting an invisible being named Orson, with whom he would share his observations of the day.Right now you are expecting me to tell you that Robin Williams hung himself, but you already know that, so I don't need to mention it.My interest is in the invisible god-like character named Orson. It is an interesting name for a god, don't you think? My theory is that the writer of the show was thinking, consciously or unconsciously, about Orson Welles, the blazing talent that gave us The War of the Worlds, a 1938 radio event that has never been equalled, and Citizen Kane, the 1941 film that Orson wrote, directed, produced, and in which he played the leading role.Citizen Kane is frequently cited as the greatest film ever made.If Robin Williams, a hyper-creative being from another world, is talking to an epic giant from that other world, it doesn't surprise me that the giant of that world would be named Orson.David Thomson, writing for The Guardian on October 22, 2009, said,“The Orson Welles of 1936-42 worked 20 hours a day, ate double meals to keep going, pursued pretty young women like a demon and lived as if he had no tomorrow. He worked, all at once, in radio, on the stage and in preparation for his great film. He was a looming figure in American life: an offence to Hollywood in the way he achieved a carte blanche contract, and a boy wonder of such arrogance that it was said of him, ‘There but for the grace of God, goes God.'”“If Orson Welles had never made Citizen Kane, he would be a phenomenon. But he did and that leaves us all his children. His real children might tell you that it was a difficult and sad life to be caught with. Alas.”“But remember this: Orson died alone in 1985 and you can read the reports as signs of sadness. On the contrary, I suspect he was exhilarated at the end. Real sadness is being worth $5bn and not knowing what to do with it.”Orson Welles and I never met, but I credit him with giving me some of the greatest advice about ad writing that I ever received.Orson wrote,“I want to give the audience a hint of a scene. No more than that. Give them too much and they won't contribute anything themselves. Give them just a suggestion and you get them working with you. That's what gives the theater...

In this episode, we do another this or that all about Disney Parks. Paige comes to the realization that she could have been a Disney Princess and Stephen can't remember the word Poutine. Would you rather get a VIP experience in a park or at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank? Would you rather work at a churro stand or gate entrance? Would you rather play a costume character or a face character? Which is better in EPCOT? Germany or Canada? Would you rather get a free Disney cruise or a free week at the resort of your choice? but you cannot go to the parks? Would you rather work Test Track or Soarin'? Get stuck on It's a Small World for thirty minutes with the song on loop? Or get stuck on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride for twenty minutes during the hell scene? Would you rather only be able to eat breakfast or eat dinner at the parks? Would you rather get 5 new pair of ears or 2 new lounge fly bags Would you rather go to Disneyland Opening Day in 1955 or DISNEY WORLD opening day in 1971.

Writer, director and actor Bridey Elliott (Clara's Ghost) joins to discuss Nicolas Roeg's dark psychological drama BAD TIMING starring Theresa Russell, Art Garfunkel, and Harvey Keitel. The film uses a non-linear structure to portray a tumultuous love affair between a free spirited young woman and a psychiatrist living in Vienna. Receiving an extremely limited release in 1980, Roeg's lush and complex film didn't gain notoriety until repeat airings on the Z Channel cable station and, much later, a 2005 Criterion disc release. Listen in on Mama Needs a Movie's sensual obsession with this cult classic, along with sexy diversions into Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, The Exorcist, the 1994 Northridge earthquake, manic pixie dream girls, Serpico, Starbucks, Gene Hackman, Mighty Joe Young, and much, much more! BAD TIMING is available to stream with subscription on The Criterion Channel.

He recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, along with their squires and Robin's minstrels. Arthur leads the knights to Camelot, but, after a musical number, changes his mind, deeming it "a silly place". As they turn away, God appears and orders Arthur to find the Holy Grail. Arthur and his knights arrive at a castle occupied by French soldiers, who claim to have the Grail and taunt the Britons, driving them back with a barrage of barnyard animals. Bedevere concocts a plan to sneak in using a Trojan Rabbit, but no one hides inside it, and the Britons are forced to flee when it is flung back at them. Arthur decides the knights should go their separate ways to search for the Grail.A modern-day historian filming a documentary on the Arthurian legends is killed by an unknown knight on horseback, triggering a police investigation. Arthur and Bedevere are given directions by an old man and attempt to satisfy the strange requests of the dreaded Knights Who Say "Ni!" Sir Robin avoids a fight with a Three-Headed Knight by running away while the heads are arguing amongst themselves. Sir Galahad is led by a grail-shaped beacon to Castle Anthrax, which is occupied exclusively by young women, who wish to be punished for misleading him, but he is unwillingly "rescued" by Lancelot. Lancelot receives an arrow-shot note from Swamp Castle. Believing the note is from a lady being forced to marry against her will, he storms the castle and slaughters several members of the wedding party, only to discover the note is from an effeminate prince. Arthur and his knights regroup and are joined by three new knights, as well as Brother Maynard and his monk brethren. They meet Tim the Enchanter, who directs them to a cave where the location of the Grail is said to be written. The entrance to the cave is guarded by the Rabbit of Caerbannog. Underestimating it, the knights attack, but the Rabbit easily kills Bors, Gawain and Ector. Arthur uses the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch", provided by Brother Maynard, to destroy the creature. Inside the cave, they find an inscription from Joseph of Arimathea, directing them to Castle Aarrgh. An animated cave monster devours Brother Maynard, but Arthur and the knights escape after the animator unexpectedly suffers a fatal heart attack. The knights approach the Bridge of Death, where the bridge-keeper demands they answer three questions in order to pass or else be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Lancelot easily answers simple questions and crosses. Robin is defeated by an unexpectedly difficult question, and Galahad fails an easy one; both are magically flung into the gorge. When Arthur asks for clarification on an obscure question about swallows, the bridge-keeper cannot answer and is himself thrown into the gorge. Arthur and Bedevere cannot find Lancelot, unaware that he has been arrested by police investigating the historian's death. The pair reach Castle Aarrgh, but find it occupied by the French soldiers. After being repelled by showers of manure, they summon an army of knights and prepare to assault the castle. As the army charges, the police arrive, arrest Arthur and Bedevere for the murder of the historian and break the camera, ending the film. TOP 51: Done on an incredibly small budget, the Pythons found funding from an unlikely sources—rock bands. Groups like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd helped get the money up for the production, with a portion of the funds coming from the Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” This is a trend that would continue later with The Life of Brian, when a large portion of the funding came from former Beatle George Harrison. When Harrison was asked why he funded the film, he responded “Because I wanted to see it.” 2: The film also represents the directorial debuts of both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who decided that anyone named Terry got to direct the Pythons' first film. Attempting to co-direct at the same time led to conflicts, so the Terrys split up the responsibilities with Jones handling the actors while Gilliam worked on the cinematography. They'd go on to direct the remaining Python films together and Jones would additionally direct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, while Gilliam's lengthy directorial career would include such artistic classics as The Fisher King, Brazil, Time Bandits, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and more. 3: The vicious Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog had parts of its fur dyed red to represent the blood of the knights that it spilt with its large, pointy teeth. Unfortunately, the dye used wouldn't wash out afterwards and the rabbit's owner was furious. 4: By the time the Pythons actually got around to doing the credits, they'd run out of money. As a result, the credits were very simple and Palin decided to spice them up a bit by adding the Swedish subtitles and llama references. When the film was shown for the first time at Cannes, firemen rushed in at the end of the credits to evacuate the audience due to a bomb scare. The crowd didn't leave at first because they thought it was part of the show. 5: n part due to the low budget, Chapman and Cleese did all their own stunts for the Black Knight scene. The two used heavy swords and some acrobatics for added realism. Connie Booth had brought her and Cleese's young daughter to the filming, who during the fight turned to her mum and said “Daddy doesn't like that man, does he?” **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen 1.5Tucker 3 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Welcome to Fantasyland! We return to our 50th anniversary series where we see the Magic Kingdom as brand new Disney Cast Members learned about it back in 1971. Again, Walt Disney World is set to open. You have thousands of new Cast Members, most of whom have never seen a Disney theme park, and you need to orient them to that experience. The only problem is that the park isn't open or ready yet either. So how do you give them that understanding? Enter a series of handbooks put out by the University of Walt Disney World. In these printed materials, Cast Members were introduced to the setting in which they would work. There is one for each of the lands of the park, plus the resort. In this podcast, we'll look at Fantasyland. We'll overview legendary attractions like "it's a small world" and Cinderella's Golden Carrousel. But we'll also reminisce about attractions long forgotten like The Fantasyland Skyway, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mickey Mouse Revue. On opening, this was the biggest land in the Magic Kingdom with more than twice the number of attractions than found in any other land at that time. If you yearn for the Walt Disney World of yesteryear, or you want to know what this land were like back in the early days of the park, this is your podcast, as we continue our efforts to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World.

John Wood is the CEO of Sally Dark Rides. He started the company with two other Johns in 1977, when they showed off their animatronics to the themed entertainment world at the 1978 IAAPA Expo in Atlanta. While they had struggled to convince retail stores and museums of the value of their animatronics, theme parks and other themed attractions understood their purpose immediately. Sally Dark Rides has evolved significantly since its founding in 1977. The company's name, Sally, comes from the first animated character that one of the Johns created while in dental school. Their major early successes were in musical animatronic shows, where robotic characters would sing and play instruments for guests. One important aspect of Sally's animatronics was that they were less expensive than those made by and for Disney and Universal. This fact made them much more accessible for regional amusement parks. John spent a lot of time talking to various theme park general managers, and onene manager at Kings Island told John that guests kept saying in surveys that they wanted a haunted house, although the park wasn't sure how to make a reliable, affordable, exciting haunted house so they kept putting in new roller coasters instead. However, John wanted to tackle this problem instead of shying away from it. This led to the expansion of Sally into the exciting world of dark rides. John discussed the creative process of designing a new dark ride for a park. First, the park would convey the constraints of the project: budget, location, capacity, and whether a particular intellectual property (IP) would be used. The team at Sally will take all of this information and quickly return to the park to pitch 3 to 7 creative story briefs, some no more than a paragraph long. Then the park will pick their favorite pitch or two to develop further. This next step involves creating a script for the ride, a layout for the attraction, and a list of all the different elements and gags that will be incorporated into the ride. Within about 3 months, the timing and budget for the project are honed, and then the ride is created over the next year. One of John's primary focuses with rides that Sally creates is to ensure that they have elements that encourage guests to ride again and again. His main way for achieving this is incorporating interactivity, typically in the form of a shooting element. By making the ride a competition which can have different outcomes each time, guests are encouraged to ride again to build their skills. In addition, John likes to incorporate surprises and fun gags that catch riders off-guard, delighting them and making the experience exciting. He also likes to incorporate a variety of different element types. For example, John likes to mix physical animatronics with digitally-projected characters so that everything doesn't look the same throughout the attraction. John admitted that if he rides an attraction and something excites him, he tries to learn from it and incorporate something similar on the next ride he creates. One way that dark rides are evolving is that they are becoming more technologically sophisticated. Many of the latest attractions have been inspired by the video game industry, utilizing gaming engines like Unreal to incorporate real-time, interactive animations into the ride. Media is being used more and more throughout parks and their rides. Additionally, some rides are incorporating radio-frequency identification (RFID) to add an element of personalization for guests and allowing them to take their scores with them throughout the day. That being said, John emphasized that you don't always need to use the latest and greatest technology to create an effective, fun attraction. One of the biggest inspirations for the Sally team when it comes to dark rides is Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. It's full of simple but effective imagery that takes guests on, well, a wild ride. John emphasized that no matter what the criteria for the ride was, it needed to be fun first. One important element of that is the preshow. Because the ride itself often isn't long enough to go into details about the story, the preshow is used to set up the point of the ride and the guests' role within it. This helps ensure everyone will have a great time once the ride starts. Another important part of a ride being fun is that it needs to work and be reliable. Nothing takes you out of an attraction like a malfunctioning or broken element. John talked about how reliability criteria is incorporated from the very first moments of designing a new attraction. Sally rides and elements aim to have a lifespan of at least 10 years. They achieve these results by utilizing industrial-rated valves and focusing on pneumatics, which are cheaper and easier to maintain than their alternatives. Sally aims to make maintenance as easy and simple as possible for the parks they create rides for. Many Sally rides are going strong after over 20 years of operation. Lastly, John talked about why dark rides are so important for a park. They act as an opportunity to offer a completely unique experience for a park. That unique experience can be the backbone of family memories that will keep guests coming back again and again to see something they cannot see anywhere else. John's parting words were to encourage listeners to keep riding and loving dark rides. You can connect with John on Facebook or on LinkedIn. You can also learn more about Sally Dark Rides on their website. Hosts Hannah Brown (@hannahabrown) and Tyler Meredith (@tylermckmeredith) return to another reboot episode of chaos and impeccable styling. And y'all we were not ready for this version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, we were not ready for this 58 minute loop of a runaway Space Mountain--a cyclone of insanity if you will. Some moments of levity include: discussing our 'siren song' TV shows that lull us into a sweet sleep, how traveling makes us into dehydrated salt boxes, how Caeleb Dressel won our eyeballs and hearts even if he would be too tall to fit into our Shire Hobbit homes. And it's officially a month away from the best time of the year--HOT GIRL FALL IS UPON US! But truly, without teeny Tom Riddle AKA Milo Sparks in a tiny track suit with a wee teacup, this episode would never have survived. He gave us the 'goof troop factor' we have been craving! The soundtrack this week? FIRE. Monet and Luna slaying every scene they are in and every look they serve? ICONIC. Would we have made it onto the guest list for Z and JC's soiree? TBD. Love is an open door on this episode of "E-Ticket to Broadway," as David is joined by Disney-enthusiast and Broadway star Patti Murin! Listen as Patti ("Frozen," "Xanadu," "Wicked") shares her eternal love of Disney--from loving Snow White to Ariel to Belle to Anna, to her first magical cross-country trip to Disneyland when she was four years old and fell in love with Dumbo the Flying Elephant and Peter Pan's Flight (but terrified of the Matterhorn and The Haunted Mansion). A deep discussion about Snow White's Scary Adventure transpires (naturally), before Patti shares memories of her first trip to Walt Disney World when she was seven, and how amazing it was and how she finally went on Space Mountain for the first time (but still afraid of The Haunted Mansion). Patti discusses her excitement for bringing her daughter to the Parks for the first time one day--meeting all of the different characters, and together going on "Frozen Ever After" in EPCOT. From her time playing Belle in "Beauty and the Beast" and cherishing being part of that iconic opening number as well as "Be Our Guest," to how she came to the role of Princess Anna in "Frozen" and her favorite moments of her time with the show, it is clear Patti is a true Disney kid. She and David chat about which job Patti would most like to have at the Parks, what attraction she'd be ok with getting stuck on with Olaf, which character from "Toy Story" she most relates to, and what she thinks Anna would most like at a Disney Park. This episode features everyone's favorite game "Finishing Each Other's Disney Sandwiches," as well as Patti's love for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Splash Mountain, the Incredicoaster, and churros. On this episode of the We Like Theme Parks Podcast, we are exposing some of our opinions and we are helping to renovate a beloved attraction! We have gone over many of our favorite things about the parks, so it is time to get into some of our more controversial opinions! We are spilling our guts and telling you all of our most unpopular Disney Opinions!Next we are discussing one of our favorite rides at Disneyland, but one that is sorely in need of our armchair imagineering. We are helping to knock down some walls at Toad Hall and giving Mr. Toad's Wild ride an update! Don't worry, all wildness will stay in tact.So everybody hold onto your hats, you are in for a Wild Ride right here on 153rd episode of the We Like Theme Parks Podcast!
An attraction based on Winnie the Pooh dates back to 1977 and the "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" Animated feature. Imagineers made multiple attempts to bring pooh Bear to Disneyland – but Pooh Bear didn't make the cut for Disneyland's new fantasyland in 1983 or Mickey's Toon town in 1993. In fact, Roger Rabbit's cartoon spin was based on a "spinnable" honey pot designed for a Winnie the Pooh attraction that never happened. A resurgence in Pooh's popularity in the mid-1990s, and the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh animated series, led to the development of a Winnie the Pooh attraction in Walt Disney Worlds' magic kingdom. The Many Adventure of Winnie the pooh would open in June of 1999, replacing the popular Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. You can find a hidden Mr. Toad in the Walt Disney World Attraction, a framed photo of Mr. Toad passing the dead for the building to Owl. [caption id="attachment_13871" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Disneyland vs Walt Disney World) Side by Side[/caption] Three years later in 2003, The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh would move into Disneyland's new Critter Country, the renamed Bear Country. Like its Walt Disney World cousin, you can find a reference to the Country Bears in the Disneyland version of The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh. Directly behind you toward the end of the attraction, you can spot Max, Buff, and Melvin on the wall, waiting for the next performance of Country Bears. So while you can ride the many adventures of Winnie the pooh in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, the attraction replaced Mr. Toad in Florida and Country Bears in California. But you can still ride Mr. Toad in California and watch country bears in Florida. Go it? Good! In this episode of SamsDisneyDiary, we take a side-by-side ride on the Walt Disney World and Disneyland version of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh! Which is better? Let me know in the comments – and Thanks for Watching. https://youtu.be/IoCvaw1w-BY

Over the years many of our favorite attractions have gone the way of the dodo. On this episode we'll take a virtual ride on three of my favorite extinct attractions. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Horizons, and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride are three classic, favorite attractions we can no longer ride in Walt Disney World. That doesn't mean we can't ride them on the podcast just one more time! I'll give you some fun stories behind each of these favorite attractions and we might even virtually ride through one or two!
Follow him: @hortoncollection 'I have known Brett and his wife Shelly for nearly 30 years. Take a journey on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride as I chat with Brett about the phenomenal experiences he has had, the champions of the sport who have become family friends, and the joy that collecting has brought to both he and his family. Brett Horton, The Horton Cycling Collection, San Francisco The Troubled Mind of a Passionate Collector Ever wonder what makes a collector tick? Brett, along with his wife and son Trevor, has built one of the most iconic collections of bicycle racing memorabilia in the world. Spanning from the 1880s to today, the collection includes more than 500,000 original photographs, crates of race-worn jerseys, trophies, original art, vintage posters, bicycles, and other memorabilia. Ok, but why? Was this guy not hugged as a kid? Does he really collect the sweaty, used clothing of other adult men? What went so wrong? As an amateur rider about 80 pounds ago, Brett enjoyed a decent level of success, particularly on the track (velodrome). Although he won multiple California champion bear jerseys, he knew pretty early on that there was zero chance he would ever be joining the likes of Greg LeMond, Eddy Merckx, and other champions at the pinnacle of the sport. College came next, and life went on. Nevertheless, the passion remains, and he loves bicycle racing to this day. In addition to building a pretty nice collection, Brett and his wife Shelly have also authored three books: Cycling's Golden Age, Goggles & Dust, and Shoulder to Shoulder. For more than 20 years, items from their collection have been shown around the globe, most notable being the anchor for the epic 100 th Anniversary Tour de France Exhibition at the historic Hôtel de Ville in Paris. Fans of the sport will find Horton Collection photographs and other memorabilia featured in nearly every issue of Peloton Magazine, and images from the collection have graced more than 30 magazine covers. The Horton Collection Facebook page and website embrace a loyal global following with new pictures and stories presented each day. Keep an eye out for the feature story about the Horton Collection in the upcoming issue of the world's largest cycling periodical, Bicycling Magazine.

While The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad served as a loose adaptation of The Wind and the Willows, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride largely abandons any connection to its source material. From Toad Hall to Hell, Ian & Tarabelle cover the ride in all in iterations including the original 1955 version and both tracks at Disney World, where it lived in a certain silly old bear took over in 1998. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was one of the Opening Day attractions for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The attractions were the same in name, but quite different on the inside. This week, I take a look at one of the most beloved attractions of all time on Word of the Week – Mister (Toad's Wild Ride). Jump in my DeLorean with me and let's go back in time to October of 1971 when Mr. Toad's Wild Ride first opened in Magic Kingdom! We'll arrive at a time where the average person made $10,600.00 per year, a movie ticket cost $1.50, and you could buy a Datsun 1200 Sports Coupe for $1,866.00. Ah, that 1970's! I mention during the episode that Rolly Crump was the Imagineer in charge of bringing Mr. Toad's Wild Ride to Walt Disney World. Check out my interview I did with him here: Episode 11: Interview With Disney Legend Rolly Crump
TAG Interview with Joanna RomersaFind all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link Joanna Romersa has clear memories of working on the Disney lot in the first weeks of her animation career. She was training to be an inker, and the studio had Lady and the Tramp in production. But Disney's had more than its first Cinemascope cartoon feature going on back then. ... Jack Webb's Dragnet was shooting on one of the newly-built sound stages and a mockup for "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" for some new amusement park down in Anaheim was laid out on yet another stage. Joanna recalls the Disney studio of the mid-fifties as "enchanting," but it was only the beginning of an animation career spanning decades. Ms. Romersa is one of the few female animator/directors who has worked in almost every facet of the cartoon business. From inking on Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty, Joanna moved on to assistant work in the '60s and '70s (ultimately supervising a department of assistants at Hanna-Barbera) to animating in the '70s and '80s. She's been an animation director for three decades, and has worked on almost every kind of cartoon product, from theatrical features to direct-to-video features, from episodic series to commercials. (There aren't many Hanna-Barbera characters with which Joanna hasn't been involved.) She today works as an animation director on Disney's upcoming The 7D. We spoke at the Animation Guild on March 28th.
